• Beginner WPF/XML question: How to get an <element> in an <element>?

    - by Niels
I have a rather simple question. I'm trying to get information out of an XML file, and now I need to get the that's inside another This is my XML code:
I can get the info with this code: Name = item.Element(ns + "author").Value, But this gives me: "Random_name1 (Random Name) http://thisisanrandomurl.com" I only want the info inside the tags. Any ideas? Thanks a lot, - Niels

  • XML: When to use attributes instead of child nodes?

    - by Rosarch
For tree leaves in XML, when is it better to use attributes, and when is it better to use descendant nodes? For example, in the following XML document: <savedGame> <links>

</links> <locations> <zombies> <zombie> <positionX>41</positionX> <positionY>100</positionY> </zombie> <zombie> <positionX>55</positionX> <positionY>56</positionY> </zombie> </zombies> <ghosts> <ghost> <positionX>11</positionX> <positionY>90</positionY> </ghost> </ghosts> </locations> </savedGame> The
tag has attributes, but it could also be written as:
<rootTagName>trees</rootTagName> <packageName>tree</packageName>
Similarly, the location tags could be written as: <zombie positionX="55" positionY="56" /> instead of: <zombie> <positionX>55</positionX> <positionY>56</positionY> </zombie> What reasons are there to prefer one over the other? Is it just a stylistic issue? Any performance considerations?

  • How to split xml to header and items using smooks?

    - by palto
I have a xml file roughly like this: <batch>
<headerStuff />
<contents> <timestamp /> <invoices> <invoice> <invoiceStuff /> </invoice> </invoices> </contents> </batch> I would like to split that file to 1000 files with the same headerStuff and only one invoice. Smooks documentation is very proud of the possibilities of transformations, but unfortunately I don't want to do those. The only way I've figured how to do this is to repeat the whole structure in freemarker. But that feels like repeating the structure unnecessarily. The header has like 30 different tags so there would be lots of work involved also. What I currently have is this: <smooks-resource-list xmlns="http://www.milyn.org/xsd/smooks-1.1.xsd" xmlns:calc="http://www.milyn.org/xsd/smooks/calc-1.1.xsd" xmlns:frag="http://www.milyn.org/xsd/smooks/fragment-routing-1.2.xsd" xmlns:file="http://www.milyn.org/xsd/smooks/file-routing-1.1.xsd"> <params> SAX </params> <frag:serialize fragment="INVOICE" bindTo="invoiceBean" /> <calc:counter countOnElement="INVOICE" beanId="split_calc" start="1" /> <file:outputStream openOnElement="INVOICE" resourceName="invoiceSplitStream"> <file:fileNamePattern>invoice-${split_calc}.xml</file:fileNamePattern> <file:destinationDirectoryPattern>target/invoices</file:destinationDirectoryPattern> <file:highWaterMark mark="10"/> </file:outputStream> <resource-config selector="INVOICE"> <resource>org.milyn.routing.io.OutputStreamRouter</resource> invoiceBean invoiceSplitStream true </resource-config> </smooks-resource-list> That creates files for each invoice tag, but I don't know how to continue from there to get the header also in the file. EDIT: The solution has to use Smooks. We use it in an application as a generic splitter and just create different smooks configuration files for different types of input files.

  • Upon doing a XSL Transform to XML how do I remove white space from a Node's attribute or data?

    - by Randy
    I have a part's list built out in XML and each part is labeled as such: <division> <parts> <part number="123456 " drawing="123456 " cad="y"> <attribute>
Header
<list>2</list> </attribute> </part> And I need to get the data behind the number and drawing attributes without the white space. I tried xsl:strip-space on the specific elements, and across the board, but that only strips the content in between the tags. I unfortunately have no access to the back-end that's producing the XML, so removing the spaces there doesn't look like an option.

  • Is it possible to coerce string values in xml to bool?

    - by Kugel
Let's suppose I have xml like this one: <Server Active="No">
</Server> C# class looks like this: public class Server { [XmlAttribute()] public string Active { get; set; } public string Url { get; set; } } Is it possible to change Active property to type bool and have XmlSerializer coerce "Yes" "No" to bool values? Edit: Xml is received, I cannot change it. So, in fact, i'm interested in deserialization only.

  • Trying to parse xml, but xmldocument.loadxml() is trying to download?

    - by maxp
I have a string input that i do not know whether or not is valid xml. I think the simplest aprroach is to wrap new XmlDocument().LoadXml(strINPUT); In a try/catch. The problem im facing is, sometimes strINPUT is an html file, if the header of this file contains <html xml:lang=""en-GB"" xmlns=""http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"" lang=""en-GB""> ...like many do, it actually tries to make a connection to the w3.org url, which i really dont want it doing. Anyone know if its possible to just parse the string without trying to be clever and checking external urls? Failing that is there an alternative to xmldocument?

  • How to get some xml that comes before and a little from after a DOM Node.

    - by startoftext
I am using java and I am pretty open to using w3c DOM or DOM4J at this point. So lets say I have a Node like a text node that I have found something interesting in, like say an occurrence of a substring in the nodes text. If I want to get a string with a number characters preceding that node and a few characters after that node how may I do that? Basically I need to be able to display a snippet of the original xml around the occurrence of that string. The problem I have with getting the parent node for example and then calling asXML is that I no longer know the exact location of the substring in the text node. If I search again for that string value in the parents xml then I may find 2 occurrences or many more if the parent has other children that contain an occurrence of that string. Much appreciation if any one can answer this question.

  • How to use pom.xml/Maven to initialize a local thoughtsite (App Engine sample) project in Eclipse?

    - by ovr
This sample app ("thoughtsite") for App Engine contains a pom.xml in its trunk: http://code.google.com/p/thoughtsite/source/browse/#svn/trunk But I don't know what command to run in Maven to set up the project locally. (The README doesn't mention anything about Maven.) I tried to just import the project code directly into Eclipse but it doesn't look like it's in an appropriate format for a direct import. So I assume I need to do something with Maven to get it set up correctly. I haven't really used Maven before so I'm not sure what command I would need to run to set everything up. The pom.xml seems like it downloads a bunch of dependencies for the project like the Spring jar files which I don't see anywhere else in the svn repository.

  • What are the virtues of using XML comments in .NET?

    - by Michal Czardybon
I can't understand the virtues of using XML comments. I know they can be converted into nice documentation external to the code, but the same can be achieved with the much more concise DOxygen syntax. In my opinion the XML comments are wrong, because: They obfuscate the comments and the code in general. (They are more difficult to read by humans). Less code can be viewed on a single screen, because "summary" and "/summary" take additional lines. They suggest that all method parameters have to be commented, whereas 90% of them are obvious and SHOULD be left not commented. The only problem I have with this is that my point of view seems to be in minority. Why?

  • How can I iterate over a collection of objects returned by a LINQ-to-XML query?

    - by billmaya
    I've got this XML: <BillingLog> <BillingItem> <date-and-time>2003-11-04</date-and-time> <application-name>Billing Service</application-name> <severity>Warning</severity> <process-id>123</process-id>
Timed out on a connection
<detail>Timed out after three retries.</detail> </BillingItem> <BillingItem> <date-and-time>2010-05-15</date-and-time> <application-name>Callback Service</application-name> <severity>Error</severity> <process-id>456</process-id>
Unable to process callback
<detail>Reconciliation timed out after two retries.</detail> </BillingItem> </BillingLog> That I want to project using LINQ-to-XML into a collection of BillingItem objects contained in a single BillingLog object. public class BillingLog { public IEnumerable<BillingItem> items { get; set; } } public class BillingItem { public string Date { get; set; } public string ApplicationName { get; set; } public string Severity { get; set; } public int ProcessId { get; set; } public string Description { get; set; } public string Detail { get; set;} } This is the LINQ query that I'm using to project the XML (which is contained in the string variable source). XDocument xdoc = XDocument.Parse(source); var log = from i in xdoc.Elements("BillingLog") select new BillingLog { items = from j in i.Descendants("BillingItem") select new BillingItem { Date = (string)j.Element("date-and-time"), ApplicationName = (string)j.Element("application-name"), Severity = (string)j.Element("severity"), ProcessId = (int)j.Element("process-id"), Description = (string)j.Element("description"), Detail = (string)j.Element("detail") } }; When I try and iterate over the objects in log using foreach. foreach (BillingItem item in log) { Console.WriteLine ("{0} | {1} | {2} | {3} | {4} | {5}", item.Date, item.ApplicationName, item.Severity, item.ProcessId.ToString(), item.Description, item.Detail); } I get the following error message from LINQPad. Cannot convert type 'UserQuery.BillingLog' to 'UserQuery.BillingItem' Thanks in advance.

  • How do I comment out a block in XML?

    - by Jonas
How do I comment out a block of tags in XML? I.e. How can I comment out <staticText> and everything inside it, in the code below? <detail> <band height="20"> <staticText> <reportElement x="180" y="0" width="200" height="20"/> <text>Hello World!</text> </staticText> </band> </detail> I could use but that's just for single tags (as what I know), like // in Java and C. I would like something more like how /** comment **/ can be used in Java and C, so I can comment out longer blocks of XML code.

  • building objects from xml file at runtime and intializing, in one pass?

    - by KaluSingh Gabbar
I have to parse the XML file and build objects representation based on that, now once I get all these data I create entries in various database for these data objects. I have to do second pass over that for value as in the first pass all I could do is build the assets in various databases. and in second pass I get the values for all the data and put it in the database. I have a feeling that this can be done in a single pass but I just want to see what are your opinions. As I am just a student who started with professional work, experienced ppl please help. Can someone who have ideas or done similar work, please provide some light on the topic so that I can think over the possibility of the work and get the prototype going based on your suggestion. Thanks a lot for your precious time, I honestly appreciate it.

  • What does it take to get the "LyricArtist" from this XML feed using Nokogiri?

    - by fail.
First the xml: http://api.chartlyrics.com/apiv1.asmx//GetLyric?lyricId=90&lyricCheckSum=9600c891e35f602eb6e1605fb7b5229e doc = Nokogiri::XML(open("http://api.chartlyrics.com/apiv1.asmx//GetLyric?lyricId=90&lyricCheckSum=9600c891e35f602eb6e1605fb7b5229e")) Successfully will grab the document content. After this point i am unable to get inside and grab data and i am not sure why? For example, i would expect: doc.xpath("//LyricArtist") To kick back the artist but it does not. I have tried the same thing with other feeds, such as the default RSS feed that any wordpress installation provides and if i do something like: doc.xpath("//link") I get a list of all the "links". I am definitely missing something and would love your input. thank you!!

  • How can I use Linq to create an array of dictionaries from XML?

    - by Duke
Given the following XML structure: <courses> <course>
foo

bar
</course> ... </courses> How could I create an array of dictionaries such that each dictionary contains all the element/value pairs within a course? What I have right now generates an array whose elements contain a single key/value dictionary for each element/value pair in a course: XElement x = XElement.Parse("...xml string..."); var foo = (from n in x.Elements() select n) .Elements().ToDictionary(y => y.Name, y => y.Value); Produces: [0] => {[course, foo]} [1] => {[description, bar]} What I'd like is this: [0] => {[course, foo], [description, bar]}

  • Can anyone tell me why my XML writer is not writing attributes?

    - by user1632018
    I am writing a parsing tool to help me clean up a large VC++ project before I make .net bindings for it. I am using an XML writer to read an xml file and write out each element to a new file. If an element with a certain name is found, then it executes some code and writes an output value into the elements value. So far it is almost working, except for one thing: It is not copying the attributes. Can anyone tell me why this is happening? Here is a sample of what it is supposed to copy/modify(Includes the attributes):  <Project DefaultTargets="Build" ToolsVersion="4.0" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/developer/msbuild/2003"> <ItemGroup Label="ProjectConfigurations"> <ProjectConfiguration Include="Debug|Win32"> <Configuration>Debug</Configuration> <Platform>Win32</Platform> </ProjectConfiguration> <ProjectConfiguration Include="Release|Win32"> <Configuration>Release</Configuration> <Platform>Win32</Platform> </ProjectConfiguration> </ItemGroup> <PropertyGroup Label="Globals"> <ProjectGuid>{57900E99-A405-49F4-83B2-0254117D041B}</ProjectGuid> <Keyword>Win32Proj</Keyword> <RootNamespace>libproj</RootNamespace> </PropertyGroup> Here is the output I am getting(No Attributes):  <Project> <ItemGroup> <ProjectConfiguration> <Configuration>Debug</Configuration> <Platform>Win32</Platform> </ProjectConfiguration> <ProjectConfiguration> <Configuration>Release</Configuration> <Platform>Win32</Platform> </ProjectConfiguration> </ItemGroup> <PropertyGroup> <ProjectGuid>{57900E99-A405-49F4-83B2-0254117D041B}</ProjectGuid> <Keyword>Win32Proj</Keyword> <RootNamespace>libproj</RootNamespace> Here is my code currently. I have tried every way I can come up with to write the attributes. string baseDir = (textBox2.Text + "\\" + safeFileName); string vcName = Path.GetFileName(textBox1.Text); string vcProj = Path.Combine(baseDir, vcName); using (XmlReader reader = XmlReader.Create(textBox1.Text)) { XmlWriterSettings settings = new XmlWriterSettings(); settings.OmitXmlDeclaration = true; settings.ConformanceLevel = ConformanceLevel.Fragment; settings.Indent = true; settings.CloseOutput = false; using (XmlWriter writer = XmlWriter.Create(vcProj, settings)) { while (reader.Read()) { switch (reader.NodeType) { case XmlNodeType.Element: if (reader.Name == "ClInclude") { string include = reader.GetAttribute("Include"); string dirPath = Path.GetDirectoryName(textBox1.Text); Directory.SetCurrentDirectory(dirPath); string fullPath = Path.GetFullPath(include); //string dirPath = Path.GetDirectoryName(fullPath); copyFile(fullPath, 3); string filename = Path.GetFileName(fullPath); writer.WriteStartElement(reader.Name); writer.WriteAttributeString("Include", "include/" + filename); writer.WriteEndElement(); } else if (reader.Name == "ClCompile" && reader.HasAttributes) { string include = reader.GetAttribute("Include"); string dirPath = Path.GetDirectoryName(textBox1.Text); Directory.SetCurrentDirectory(dirPath); string fullPath = Path.GetFullPath(include); copyFile(fullPath, 2); string filename = Path.GetFileName(fullPath); writer.WriteStartElement(reader.Name); writer.WriteAttributeString("Include", "src/" + filename); writer.WriteEndElement(); } else { writer.WriteStartElement(reader.Name); } break; case XmlNodeType.Text: writer.WriteString(reader.Value); break; case XmlNodeType.XmlDeclaration: case XmlNodeType.ProcessingInstruction: writer.WriteProcessingInstruction(reader.Name, reader.Value); break; case XmlNodeType.Comment: writer.WriteComment(reader.Value); break; case XmlNodeType.Attribute: writer.WriteAttributes(reader, true); break; case XmlNodeType.EntityReference: writer.WriteEntityRef(reader.Value); break; case XmlNodeType.EndElement: writer.WriteFullEndElement(); break; } } } }

  • Can JAXB store the class name in the XML so that the the deserialize code doesn't need knowledge of the class?

    - by Andrew
It seems the standard approach for deserializing JAXB XML is to specify the package name when creating the context. Then, JAXB looks up the class based on the root element: JAXBContext jc = JAXBContext.newInstance("com.foo"); Unmarshaller u = jc.createUnmarshaller(); Object o = u.unmarshal(new StringReader("...")); I'm looking for a more flexible approach where I don't have to specify the package name and could still deserialize any object. This would be as simple as JAXB storing the package in the XML, but I can't seem to find out how to do this. I can write the code to do it myself but that would be unpleasant. It would like JAXB to do it, if possible. BTW, I am not using schemas, just Annotations and marshal/unmarshal. Any ideas?
