• X509 Certificates, DigitalSignature vs NonRepudiation (C#)

  We have been handed a set of test sertificates on smart cards for developing a solution that requires XML messages to be signed using PKI. Each (physical) smart card seems to have two certificates stored on it. I import them into the Windows certificate store using software supplied by the smart card provider, and then use code resembling the following to iterate over the installed certificates: foreach (X509Certificate2 x509 in CertStore.Certificates) { foreach (X509Extension extension in x509.Extensions) { if (extension.Oid.Value == "one we are interested in") { X509KeyUsageExtension ext = (X509KeyUsageExtension)extension; if ((ext.KeyUsages & X509KeyUsageFlags.DigitalSignature) != X509KeyUsageFlags.None) { // process certs here We have been told to use the certificates that have the NonRepudiation key usage flag set to sign the XMLs. However, the certificate that has the NonRepudiation flag has this flag only, and not for instance the DigitalSignature flag which I check for above. Does this strike anyone but me as slightly odd? I am in other words told to sign with a certificate that does not (appear to) have the DigitalSignature usage flag set. Is this normal procedure? Any comments? Thanks.

  in Canada, website SSL certificates can be had for as low as US$10. unfortunately, code signing certificates cost about 10 time as much, one website mentions Vista compatibility ... this seems strange because my assumption is they must support XP, Vista, Windows 7, Server 2003, and Server 2008 or they would be useless. https://secure.ksoftware.net/code_signing.html US$99 Support Platforms Microsoft Authenticode. Sign any Microsoft executable format (32 and 64 bit EXE, DLL, OCX, DLL or any Active X control). Signing hardware drivers is not currently supported. Abode AIR. Sign any Adobe AIR application. Java. Sign any JAR applet Microsoft Office. Sign any MS Office Macro or VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) file. Mozilla. Sign any Mozilla Object file. The implication is that a single code signing certificate can do ALL of the above. ksoftware actually discounts Commodo certificates and the Commode website is unclear. QUESTION: Will ONE code signing certificate be enough or do I need one for Microsoft executables, and a second for things like Word and Excel macros? my main goal is to sign things like vs2008 code snippets so that I can export them securely; however, I would like to be able to use the same code signing certificate for signing other items too. • JSF: How to get the selected item from selectOneMenu if its rendering is dynamic?

  At my view I have two menus that I want to make dependent, namely, if first menu holds values "render second menu" and "don't render second menu", I want second menu to be rendered only if user selects "render second menu" option in the first menu. After second menu renders at the same page as the first one, user has to select current item from it, fill another fields and submit the form to store values in database. Both the lists of options are static, they are obtained from the database once and stay the same. My problem is I always get null as a value of the selected item from second menu. How to get a proper value? The sample code of view that holds problematic elements is: <h:selectOneMenu id="renderSecond" value="#{Bean.renderSecondValue}" valueChangeListener="#{Bean.updateDependentMenus}" immediate="true" onchange="this.form.submit();" > <f:selectItems value="#{Bean.typesOfRendering}" /> </h:selectOneMenu><br /> <h:selectOneMenu id="iWillReturnYouZeroAnyway" value="#{Bean.currentItem}" rendered="#{Bean.rendered}" > <f:selectItems value="#{Bean.items}" /> </h:selectOneMenu><br /> <h:commandButton action="#{Bean.store}" value="#Store" /> However, if I remove "rendered" attribute from the second menu, everything works properly, except for displaying the menu for all the time that I try to prevent, so I suggest the problem is in behavior of dynamic rendering. When I change value in first menu and update isRendered with valueChangeListener, the second menu displays but it doesn't initialize currentItem while submitting. When I hit the refresh teh page, this time, I get the same wanting as I originally get in IE8, but when I click "Continue to this website (not recommended)", the page refresh again, displaying the same warning. What can I do to get the site to display in the WebBrowser control as it does in IE8. I would've thought that the control would be using the same core logic and therefore expected the same result.

• Sharing session state between 2 ASP.NET applications using SQL Server

  Hi I'm working on a site that has a requirement to share session between a cms application and an online store application on the same domain eg. mydomain.com and store.mydomain.com I've made some progress with it and it works on my local build between localhost/cms and localhost/store Basically I have done what is suggested in this article http://blogs.msdn.com/toddca/archive/2007/01/25/sharing-asp-net-session-state-across-applications.aspx and hacked the TempGetAppID Stored Procedure to return the same application id (1). This appears to work as it creates sessions with ids like 'abv5d2urx1asscfwuzw3wp4500000001', which is what I'd expect. My issue is that when I deploy it to our testing environment, it creates a new session when I navigate between the 2 sites. So when I start a session on the cms site, if I navigate to the store, it creates a new session. These are set up as 2 different websites in IIS7. In the web.config files for both sites, the and elements are both the same and are as follows (minus sensitive information) Has anyone got an ideas why this might not be working? I am sharing Forms Authentication across the 2 sites and that works fine. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated! Many thanks Dave

  I want to access messages in GMail from a Java application using JavaMail and IMAP. Why am I getting a SocketTimeoutException? • Public key of Android project and keystore created in Eclipse?

  I created an Android project using Eclipse (under Windows FWIW) and let Eclipse create the keypair during the Export Android Application process. I successfully used Eclipse to make a signed release build that is now on the Market. Now I want to now use ProGuard, which I believe means using Ant instead of Eclipse to build. It was a pain, but Ant building works in both debug and release, until it tries to sign the APK. I get: [signjar] jarsigner: Certificate chain not found for: redacted. redacted must reference a valid KeyStore key entry containing a private key and corresponding public key certificate chain. keytool -list -keystore redacted gives me: Keystore type: JKS Keystore provider: SUN Your keystore contains 1 entry redacted, Jan 16, 2011, PrivateKeyEntry, Certificate fingerprint (MD5): BD:0F:70:C1:39:F5:FE:5B:BC:CD:89:0B:C8:66:95:E0 Which brings me to the actual question: where is my public key? I have some sort of public key on my Android Market profile, but is that the pair for my private key? If so, how do I store that in the keystore so that jarsigner will work?

• Problem with testing In App with sandbox test account

  Hi, I created a test user account through the Manage User Accounts in iTunes Connect. When you create such an account you have to select a valid storefront for your account. I chose US Store. Now I signed out from the store in App Store settings on my device. Ran the application and tried to perform a purchase. I successfully login with my test account. After I press Confirm when entering my credentials I get an alert, that comes from SKPaymentTransactionStateFailed from the observer. It says "Your account is only valid for purchases in the US iTunes Store". The error state = 0 unknown. Second time when i try to perform the purchase, StoreKit only asks me for a password like the previous login was successful. After entering a password I can perform a purchase. My question is whether it's only because it's a testing account and the application is not actually on AppStore? What should I do to avoid this message or at least to continue the purchasing process?   Hi all, I believe I know the answer to this question, but wanted to confirm: Question Does Sql server (or will it in the foreseeable future), offer a database-wide "unicode switch" which says "store all characters in unicode (UTF-16, UCS-2, etc)", i.e. like Oracle. The Context Our application has provided "CJK" (Chinese-Japanese-Korean) support for years--using Oracle as the db store. Recently folks have been asking for the same support in sql server. We store our db schema definition in xml and generate the vendor-specific definitions (oracle, sql server) using vendor-specific xsl. We can make the change easily. The problem is for upgrades. Generated scripts would need to change the column types for 100+ columns from varchar to nvarchar, varchar(max) to nvarchar(max), etc. These changes require dropping and recreating indexes and foreign keys if the any indexes/fk's exist on the column. Non-trivial. Risky. DB-wide character encodings for us would eliminate programming changes. (I.e. we would not to change the column types from varchar to nvarchar; sql server would correctly store unicode data in varchar columns). I had thought that eventually sql server would "see the light" and allow storing unicode in varchar/clob columns. Evidently not yet. Recap So just to triple check: does mssql offer a database-wide switch for character encoding? Will it in SQL2008R3? or 2010? thanks, bill

What is throwing me for a loop is how to incorporate the certificate they are using in this so i can obtain their secret messages. From what I understand about MIM attakcs, the MIM acts as an imposter as seen on this diagram: Below are the details for my project. I understand that they both have g and p agreed upon before communicating, but how would I be able to implement this with they both having a certificate to verify their signatures? Alice prepares ?signA(NA, Bob), pkA, certA? where signA is the digital signature algorithm used by Alice, “Bob” is Bob’s name, pkA is the public-key of Alice which equals gx mod p encoded according to X.509 for a fixed g, p as specified in the Diffie-Hellman key- exchange and certA is the certificate of Alice that contains Alice’s public-key that verifies the signature; Finally, NA is a nonce (random string) that is 8 bytes long. Bob checks Alice's signature, and response with ?signB{NA,NB,Alice},pkB,certB?. Alice gets the message she checks her nonce NA and calculates the joint key based on pkA, pkB according to the Diffie-Hellman key exchange. Then Alice submits the message ?signA{NA,NB,Bob},EK(MA),certA? to Bob and Bobrespondswith?SignB{NA,NB,Alice},EK(MB),certB?. where MA and MB are their corresponding secret messages.

  Hello, I'm writing this application that will allow a user to define custom quizzes and then allow another user to respond to the questions. Each question of the quiz has a corresponding datatype. All the responses to all the questions are stored vertically in my [Response] table. I currently use 2 fields to store the response. //Response schema ResponseID int QuizPersonID int QuestionID int ChoiceID int //maps to Choice table, used for drop down lists ChoiceValue varbinary(MAX) //used to store a user entered value I'm using .net 3.5 C# SQL Server 2008. I'm thinking that I would want to store different datatypes in the same field and then in my SQL report proc I would CONVERT to the proper datatype. I'm thinking this is ideal because I only have to check one field. I'm also thinking it might be more trouble than it is worth. I think my other options are to; store the data as strings in the db (yuck), or to have a column for each datatype I might use. So what I would like to know is, how would I format my datatypes in C# so that they can be converted properly in SQL? What is the performance hit for converting in SQL? Should I just make a whole wack of columns for each datatype?

Instead, I want to create the grid dynamically. However, it does appear that at the point of creation the values of theStore and layout are correct. Suggestions please, or indeed a working example of a programmic grid might solve the problem.

• Printing an invisible NSView

  Initially I created a simple program with a custom NSView. I drew a picture (certificate) and printed it! beautiful! Everything worked great! I them moved my custom NSView to an existing application. My hope was that when a user hit print it would print this certificate. Simple enough. I figured a could have a NSView pointer in my controller code. Then at initialization I would populate the pointer. Then when someone wanted to print the certificate it would print. The problem is that all of my drawing code is in the "drawRect" method. This method doesn't get called because this view is never displayed in a window. I have heart that others use non-visible NSView objects just for printing. What do I need to do. I really don't want to show this view to the screen. Rodger

  Hi all, In my application, I have a provision for users to upload files like doc, xls, zip, etc. I would like to know how to store these files on my website and have only restricted people access it. I may have a group of people and let only these group access those uploaded files. I know that some may try to just copy the link to the document or the file and pass it to another (non-permitted) user and they can download it. So how can I prevent it? How can I check if the request to download the file was made by a legitimate user who has access to the file? The usernames of the group members are stored in the database along with the document name and location in the database so they can access it. But how do I prevent non-permitted users from being able to access that confidential data in all ways? With the above in mind, how do I store these documents? Do I store the documents in a blob column in the Database or just just let user upload to a folder and merely store the path to the file in the database? The security of the documents is of utmost importance. So any procedure that could facilitate this feature would definitely help. I am not into Object Oriented programming so if you have a simpler code that you would like to share with me, I would greatly appreciate it. Also how do I archive documents that are old? Like say there are documents that are 1 year old and I want to conserve my website space by archiving them but still make them available to the user when they need it. How do I go about this?   We are facing this error intermittently. If we restart the server it works for some time and again the problem start. We also have another load balanced server with similar configuration and that is working fine. The server is running on Linux box. If we do the "ps -ef" its listing the TOMCAT process. Is it any way related to the "maxProcessors" or "acceptCount" attributes defined in the above configuration? Is it the problem with the port number?? Does it have to do any thing with the certificate. The certificate is generated using Java Keytool.   hi, our testers have the requirement to store multiple properties for a test that are not present in the "properties". e.g. they want to store priority, a description(not in the wiki page itself) and so on. they don't want to use the tagging mechanism. is there a way to store any kind of new xml node in the properties.xml for a test? these properties should then be used to: query the fields via the search screen run tests based on the "SuiteResponder" ?suite=xxx&TAGx=abc&TAGy=cde they should be returned by "?properties" responder. they should appear in the test history of the test run in essence they want to store any kind of "meta" information in the properties.xml and work with them in all kinds of ways, search, run etc. does anybody here know if there is already something available in that direction? if not i think we have to "pimp" these features into fitnesse to make our testers happy. thanks a lot any help appreciated marcel ps: i've also posted the question in the yahoo fitnesse group

  Hello, I am developing a web application that is authenticated using CAS (A single-sign-on solution: http://www.ja-sig.org/wiki/display/CAS/Home). For security reasons, I need two things to work: The communication between CAS and my application needs to be secure My application needs to accept the certification coming from CAS, so that I can guarantee that the CAS responding is the real CAS server This is what I got so far: uri = URI.parse("https://www.google.com/accounts") https = Net::HTTP.new(uri.host, uri.port) https.use_ssl = (uri.scheme == 'https') https.verify_mode = (OpenSSL::SSL::VERIFY_PEER) raw_res = https.start do |conn| conn.get("#{uri.path}?#{uri.query}") end This works just great in Mac OS X. When I try to reach an insecure URI, it raises an exception, and when I try to reach a secure URI, it allows me normally, just like expected. The problem starts when I deploy my application on my Linux server. I tried in both Ubuntu and Red Hat. Independent of what URI I try to reach, it always raises this exception: OpenSSL::SSL::SSLError: SSL_connect returned=1 errno=0 state=SSLv3 read server certificate B: certificate verify failed from /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.8/net/http.rb:586:in `connect' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.8/net/http.rb:586:in `connect' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.8/net/http.rb:553:in `do_start' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.8/net/http.rb:542:in `start' from (irb):7 I think this have something to do with my installed OpenSSL package, but I can't be sure. This are my installed OpenSSL packages: openssl.x86_64 0.9.8e-12.el5 installed openssl-devel.x86_64 0.9.8e-12.el5 installed I tried using HTTParty as well, but it just ignores the SSL certificate. I hope someone can help me, or tell me about a gem that works the way I need. Thanks.

• Http Digest Authentication, Handle different browser char-sets...

  Hi all, I tried to use the Http Authentication Digest Scheme with my php (apache module) based website. In general it works fine, but when it comes to verification of the username / hash against my user database i run into a problem. Of course i do not want to store the user´s password in my database, so i tend to store the A1 hashvalue (which is md5($username . ':' . $realm . ':' . $password)) in my db. This is just how the browser does it too to create the hashes to send back. The Problem: I am not able to detect if the browser does this in ISO-8859-1 fallback (like firefox, IE) or UTF-8 (Opera) or whatever. I have chosen to do the calculation in UTF-8 and store this md5 hash. Which leads to non-authentication in Firefox and IE browsers. How do you solve this problem? Just do not use this auth-scheme? Or Store a md5 Hash for each charset? Force users to Opera? (Terms of A1 refer to the http://php.net/manual/en/features.http-auth.php example.) (for digest access authentication read the according wikipedia entry)

• What's the relationship between the Intel Atom Developer Program and the MeeGo operating system?

  I'm trying to understand the relationship between the Intel Atom Developer Program (IADP) and the new OS called MeeGo. IADP let's me create applications that run on both MeeGo as well as Windows devices, as long as the device is based on the Atom processor. The IADP apps are published in an app store called AppUp, which is very much like the Apple App Store. The MeeGo operating system merges Intel's Moblin and Nokia's Maemo into one OS. The purpose seems to be to make it possible to develop software that will run on Intel powered devices, Nokia-made devices, as well devices from other companies. Nokia has its Ovi Store that will support MeeGo apps. With its OS independent runtime, the question is what an IADP app really is? Is an IADP app a beast of its own, or is it just a MeeGo app that has been restricted to run only on Atom powered devices? Will it be possible to recompile my IADP app to run on all MeeGo devices? Sold in Ovi Store? Intel and Nokia have me really confused. Where should I go as a developer?
