    Hi there I've heard many times that Linus Torvalds is a genius when it comes to writing good code. I also wish to write good code and I'd like to see how the first version of Linux was written. I discovered the following resource on maxmind: http://geolite.maxmind.com/download/geoip/api/php/timezone/ I suspect that I could use this with another api that provides the state that an area code belongs to.     In Internet Explorer 7, this code executes consistently in 47 ms: function updateObjectValues() { $('.objects').html(12345678); // ~500 DIVs } however, this code executes consistently in 157 ms: function updateObjectValues() { $('.objects').html('12345678'); // ~500 DIVs } Passing a number is over 3x faster than a string. Why are these results so dramatically different? And, is there any way to help the performance of the string?

Now I'm thinkig about using one of the frameworks (Blocks) which is available as GC-only. My question is - can I still use the framework without any changes to my current non-GC code and without using GC myself?

For example, I keep all curly braces on the same lines as their declaring class, method, etc, but when generating a controller, it completely disregards my settings.     I have a webservice that I want to call from the browser every few seconds to see if there are any notification messages in the database that should be displayed on the screen. We have the JSON code working to display the messages in a JavaScript function after an Async Postback, but this only executes after a page turn. I want it to execute every 10-15 seconds as well. A code sample would be very helpful.
