• Spring can't find a lib and webapp doesn't start up in tomcat 6

  I've this problem using STS: I'm building a simple Spring app, just to try out features like MVC and persistence. Now I've created something very simple, out of a bunch of tutorials for Spring 3, that I'm using. The application fails with this, during server startup: Code: org.springframework.beans.factory.BeanCreationException: Error creating bean with name 'org.springframework.web.servlet.mvc.annotation.DefaultAnnotationHandlerMapping#0': Initialization of bean failed; nested exception is org.springframework.beans.factory.CannotLoadBeanClassException: Cannot find class [org.springframework.orm.hibernate3.annotation.AnnotationSessionFactoryBean] for bean with name 'mySessionFactory' defined in ServletContext resource [/WEB-INF/spring/appServlet/servlet-context.xml]; nested exception is java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: org.springframework.orm.hibernate3.annotation.AnnotationSessionFactoryBean but I've org.springframework.orm in web-inf/classes folder (I even tried putting it in web-inf/lib). As I copied these libs there, the came out in Web App Libraries folder. Building this project in STS works fine as this dependency is set up in build path throught project properties, but how do I transfer the libs to the web app? (I'm using Tomcat 6 as it is the server I'm going to use sometime in the future for production). Is this a config problem of my XML? Or am I just missing the right way to put this lib? (I encountered the same problem before, but adding the needed lib in classes worked it out). • What route to take to become a systems developer?

  In the past I have done a lot of Java and Python coding. Mostly, I worked on web apps and some simple console or gui apps. I also have a formal education in computer science. What route should I take to become a systems developer? I always did like C++, but never had a chance to use it for anything. Would mastering C++ be one of the steps? If so what resources can you suggest? Also, I would like to know how much different is the work between plain old development and systems development. There seem to be a lot of overlapping between the two.

• In a Maven project, what are reasons for either a nested or a flat directory layout?

  As my Maven project grows, I'm trying to stay on top of the project structure. So far, I have a nested directory layout with 2-3 levels, where there's a POM on each level with module entries corresponding to the directories at that level. POM inheritance (parent property) does not necessarily follow this, and is not relevant for the purpose of this question. Now, while the nested structure seems pretty natural to Maven, and it's nice and clean as long as you are on one particular level, I'm starting to get confused by what I look at in my IDE (Eclipse and IntelliJ IDEA). I had a look at the Apache Felix sources, and they have a pretty complex project in what seems to be a flat directory structure, so I'm wondering if this would be a better way to go. What are some pros and cons for either approach that you have experienced in practice? Note that this question (which I found meanwhile) seems to be very similar. I'll leave it to the community to decide whether this should be closed as a duplicate.

• How to convert a MSSQL database (including procedures, functions and triggers) to a firebird databas

  I am considering migrating to Firebird. To have a "quick start" approach I downloaded the trial of a conversion tool (DBConvert) and tried it. I just picked up a random tool, this tool doesn't convert procedures, functions and triggers (I don't think it is a limit of the trial since there is not an explicit reference to sp, sf and triggers in the link above). Anyway by trying that tool I had the message: "The DB cannot be converted succesfully because some FK names are too long." This is because in some tables I have FK whose description is 32 chars. Is this a real firebird limit or it is possible to overcome it somehow (of course renaming the FK is an extreme option because it is extra work)? Anyway how to convert a MS SQL DB fully to FIREBIRD? Is there a valid tool? Did someone succed in a conversion of non trivial databases?

  To end the year on a good note this release adds support for SQL Server 2011 (Denali) CTP1 and fixes a few bugs. Because of the new SSMS shell in SQL 2011 CTP1 the SSMS Tools Pack 1.9.4 doesn't have regions and debug sections functionality for now. The fixed bugs are: A bug that prevented to create insert statements for a database A bug that didn't script commas as decimal points correctly for non US settings. A bug with searching through grid results. A threading bug that sometimes happened when saving Window Content History. A bug with Window Connection Coloring throwing an error on startup if a server colors was undefined. A bug with changing shortcuts in SSMS for various features.   I use Fiddler for intercepting HTTP traffic when using IE or Firefox. Now that I'm using chrome for most of my day, I would like to be able to see the http traffic using something like Fiddler. What do chrome developers use ? I prefer something automatic like Fiddler but something that needs config, etc would also help. P.S : I'm on windows vista 64-bit HOME PREMIUM, if that's important.

  Hello, how can I change ASP.NET Configuration tool-s connection string name? (Which connection string will ASP.NET Configuration tool will use) I'm learning ASP.NET and everywhere and in book that I'm reading now theres connection string named: LocalSqlServer. I want to use my local sql server database instead of sql express to store Roles, Membership and other data. I have used aspnet_regsql.exe to create needed data structures in my database. after that I changed my web.config to look like: <connectionStrings> <remove name="LocalSqlServer"/> <add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="Server=(LOCAL); Database=MyDatabase;Integrated Security=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /> </connectionStrings> but when I run ASP.NET Configuration tool it says that: "The connection name 'ApplicationServices' was not found in the applications configuration or the connection string is empty." ASP.NET Configuration tool uses connection string named: ApplicationServices not LocalSqlServer. cause of that I have to modify web.config to: <connectionStrings> <add name="ApplicationServices" connectionString="Server=(LOCAL); Database=MyDatabase;Integrated Security=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /> </connectionStrings> and everything works fine. I wish to know why the hell my web site uses connection string named: ApplicationServices and all books and online documentations uses LocalSqlServer? and how to change it to LocalSqlServer?   I'm a self taught developer that currently has more than enough experience to hold up against my colleagues waving with their degrees, yet I feel that I'm lacking some important skills to advance further into being a senior level professional in a leading role. More specific in the engineering, planning and designing aspect of software. I've touched the surface of UML, ERM/ERD, have experienced both waterfall and scrum projectmanagement, ... yet I feel there is something missing as every time I start on a new project I don't know where to begin. Should I start diagramming and how? should I start writing an xx page document describing the project on a technical level first, should I dive head first into writing the first tests and code or pseudo-code? I would like to know what, in my case, would be the best way forward, to learn how I can tackle this problem in the future and get better at leading and starting a project. There is not much i don't know about my technical tools and languages but when it gets abstract i'm in trouble.

  What is a good tool to see the differences between 2 tables (or even better, the datasets returned by 2 queries). EDIT: I'm not interested in the schema changes. Just assume that the schemas are the same. background as to why: I'm porting some legacy code which can fill a database with some pre-calced data. The easiest way to see if I got everything right, is to check the output of the old program, with the new one. I was thinking that if there is some kind of 'diff' tool for databases, this might be great.

  I develop Rails 3 applications, but prior to this, my background was a designer (typically making mockups in Photoshop and then breaking them down to HTML5/CSS3). Now, some great tools/templates exist for getting working layouts ready for Rails and other apps quickly, e.g., http://railsapps.github.com/rails-composer/. Many are using CSS Frameworks such as Twitter Bootstrap. I'd like to know whether there is a local app (for Mac) that can design layouts, much the way Dreamweaver would, but that are geared towards being utilized in a Twitter Bootstrap situation alongside Ruby (Rails) or Python apps, etc.

• Vim: multi-file editing - having different makes in different splits

  I'm a recent vim convert (from fancy IDEs like eclipse.) I love the :make command in vim and use it extensively; however I also like to edit multiple projects (with separate makefiles.) So usually to edit more than one project I will do pushd project1 vim project1.cpp [suspend signal] pushd ../project2 vim project2.cpp and now I can switch between the two projects with ctrl+z i.e. suspend signal, and fg. When this becomes an issue is when I want to open one project in the context of another so I can do copy/pasting. So if instead in the above I do pushd project1 vim project1.cpp :vsp ../project2/project2.cpp I can edit both concurrently in the same vim process, however I can't effectively build one or the other with the :make command, it will only build project 1. Does anyone have some kind of scheme that gives them the best of both worlds: being able to edit concurrently while still being able to build multiple projects with the :make command all from the same vim process?

• Modifying SQL Database on Shared Hosting

  I have a live database on a shared hosting server. I am making some major changes to my site's code and I would like to fix some stupid mistakes I made in initially designing the database. These changes involve altering the size of a large number of fields, and enforcing referential integrity between tables properly. I would like to make the changes on both my local test server and the remote server if possible. I should note that while I'm fairly comfortable with writing complex queries to handle data, I have very little experience modifying database structure without a graphical interface. I can access the remote database in the visual studio database explorer but I can not use that for anything other than data manipulation. I installed Sql Management Studio express last night and after 40+ crashes I gave up - I couldn't even patch the damn thing. The remote server is SQL 2005 / The MyLittleAdmin web interface is available. So my question is what is the best way to accomplish these changes. Is there a graphical interface I can use on the remote server? If not is there an easy way to copy the database to my local machine, fix it, and re upload? Finally if none of the above are viable does anyone have links to a decent info on fixing referential integrity via query? Sorry for the somewhat general question - I feel like I am making this far harder than it should be but after searching / trying all night i haven't gotten anywhere. Thanks in advance for the help. I really appreciate it. ...Also does anyone have a time machine I can borrow- I need to go kick my past self's ass for this.

• Good IM/Chat solution for pasting code

We've been using Skype to host chats with all the developers, and it works okay except for one thing: It REALLY mangles any code we copy and paste into the chats -- especially the whitespace in Python. This question has tons of opinions about chat clients & servers, but no one has much to say about pasting in code. • Is it normal for a software developer to have lots of issues after product went live?

  In recent months, our product (which went live probably 9 months ago) experience an increase in the number of users using it. We faced lots of queries, problems, and complaints from users. Sadly, it seems that a lot of the issues seem to be coming from a module that I have been working on. At times, I wonder if I am incompetent, or is this pretty normal in software development, that bugs are found especially during the initial stages of a software development livecycle after it goes live? I wonder why some issues we faced now are not foreseen by me or the team during development phase. I have been working as a software developer for close to 2 years now.
