    I can't seem to be able to install Windows 7 64-bit on a 2008 MacBook (64-bit dual core) from an external USB DVD drive. I've done the following: Performed a clean install of Mac OS X Snow Leopard Installed all system updates Run Boot Camp Assistant - when the system restarts I get an error stating "no bootable disc" Used rEFIt, but I still get the same error Made a bootable USB drive from an ISO of the Windows 7 installation disc, but I still get the same error Tried using Windows 7 32-bit, Windows 7 64-bit and Windows XP, but I still get the same error How I can resolve this?

  • Put Google Chrome, AVG on a flash drive

    I often install programs on others' computers such as LibreOffice, which, when they only have a dial-up connection, takes forever to download. So instead I keep it on a flash drive and install it from there. This works fine for LibreOffice. However, some programs, when you download them all you are downloading is a downloader - when you download ChromeSetup and open it, a installer window opens which actually downloads Chrome. Dial-up users then see that it will take 4 hours. Another example is AVG free antivirus - you download an installer, which when opened actually downloads AVG. However this doesn't work too well for dial-up users. How do I put the entire program of things like Chrome and AVG on a flash drive for fast installation on others' slow connections?

  • Replacing a non-failing drive in a RAID-0 array [migrated]

    I have a Windows 7 machine booting on a RAID-0 pair of 500GB disks, controlled by an ICH9R. One of those is indicating an end-To-end SMART failure. I added a spare disk as a temporary workaround, before receiving another to replace the failing one (prices are awful these days). The RAID-0 rebuilt on the spare and dropped the failing one from the array, as expected. Now that I received the new drive, what are my options to reintegrate it in the array? My first thought was to simply clone the temporary disk to the new one while the array is offline, but shouldn't there be a way to force a second rebuild, just as if the temporary drive had a warning, and drop that temporary from the array?

  • Prevent acccess to the C drive

    Is it possible to prevent regular users from accessing the C drive via Windows Explorer? they should be allowed to execute certain programs. This is to ensure that employees cannot steal or copy out proprietary software even though they should be able to execute it. One way would be to change the option in windows Group Policy and set the "shell" to something other than "explorer.exe". I'm looking for a similar windows setting that just hides the C drive or otherwise prevents trivial access. This is for Windows XP/7.

  • Mount drive with two drive letters instead of one.

    Hi everyone a co-worker of mine absolutely insists that it's possible to mount a drive in windows server 2003 with two letters instead of one. He's not talking about mounting a drive into an empty ntfs - folder. example: use ab:\ instead of a:. I'm pretty sure that's not possible. I'm working with over 300 windows servers and never noticed that kind of feature. I also cant find any knowledge base or technet article which describes that kind of feature. Please tell me if it's possible or not. If it's possible please refer to the corresponding knowledge base or technet articles from microsoft. Thank you very much.

    There is some information available on shape changes in RAID arrays but I'm a little nervous and would like confirmation: Problem: I have 2 500GB drive as software raid 5 (mdadm). I would like to free one of the two drives since RAID-redundancy is for wimps... Can I just mdadm --grow --array-size=1 followed by a mdadm --grow --raid-disks 1? This seems too simple. How would I specify which drive gets freed? Part of the reason for this maneuver is that I don't have additional space to run a backup.

  • Install Windows 8 (clean) on Hybrid Drive

    I have a Sony Vaio T series (UEFI) that consists of a Hybrid Drive (SSD + HDD). I would like to install Windows 8 on the SSD and keep the Program files and other applications on the hard disk. What I could perceive was to keep the SSD as the System Drive. I'm able to install the OS on the SSD, but I run into some issues where I don't see the Microsoft Store App on my system and there are no apps on Windows 8. I tried using this blog post but doesn't seem to fit for Windows 8. Any help in this regard would be great. I would like the Windows 8 alone on the SSD, I don't care about the space wasted on the SSD and install other programs on my HDD. Thanks

    I know that linux is mostly safe from viruses, however: if you do download a windows virus (i.e., through a drive-by download), will it just sit there on your computer, and take up space? Is it unable to infect files because of the different operating system? If you transfer files between computers (by using a usb flash drive or through online file sharing), is there any risk that the virus could be transferred to windows and activate?

    I have an Excel source going into an OLE DB destination. I'm inserting data into a view that has an INSTEAD OF trigger that handles all inserts. When I try to execute the package I receive this error: "Failure inserting into the read-only column ColumnName" What can I do to let SSIS know that this view is safe to insert into because there is an INSTEAD OF trigger that will handle the insert? EDIT (Additional info): Some more additional info. I have a flat file that is being inserted into a normalized database. My initial problem was how do I take a flat file and insert that data into multiple tables while keeping track of all the primary/foreign key relationships. My solution was to create a VIEW that mimicked the structure of the flat file and then create an INSTEAD OF trigger on that view. In my INSTEAD OF trigger I would handle the logic of maintaining all the relationships between tables My view looks something like this. CREATE VIEW ImportView AS SELECT CONVERT(varchar(100, NULL) AS CustomerName, CONVERT(varchar(100), NULL) AS Address1, CONVERT(varchar(100), NULL) AS Address2, CONVERT(varchar(100), NULL) AS City, CONVERT(char(2), NULL) AS State, CONVERT(varchar(250), NULL) AS ItemOrdered, CONVERT(int, NULL) AS QuantityOrdered ... I will never need to select from this view, I only use it to insert data into it from this flat file I receive. I need someway to tell SQL Server that the fields aren't really read only because there is an INSTEAD OF trigger on this view.

  • Script to copy files on CD and not on hard disk to a new directory

    I need to copy files from a set of CDs that have a lot of duplicate content, with each other, and with what's already on my hard disk. The file names of identical files are not the same, and are in sub-directories of different names. I want to copy non-duplicate files from the CD into a new directory on the hard disk. I don't care about the sub-directories - I will sort it out later - I just want the unique files. I can't find software to do that - see my post at SuperUser http://superuser.com/questions/129944/software-to-copy-non-duplicate-files-from-cd-dvd Someone at SuperUser suggested I write a script using GNU's "find" and the Win32 version of some checksum tools. I glanced at that, and have not done anything like that before. I'm hoping something exists that I can modify. I found a good program to delete duplicates, Duplicate Cleaner (it compares checksums), but it won't help me here, as I'd have to copy all the CDs to disk, and each is probably about 80% duplicates, and I don't have room to do that - I'd have to cycle through a few at a time copying everything, then turning around and deleting 80% of it, working the hard drive a lot.   • TFS 2010 Build gives WorkItemStore error when Create Work Item on Failure is enabled

    I'm using TFS 2010 Build. I have a build definition that uses the DefaultTemplate.xaml template that's stock in TFS 2010, and the Create Work Item on Failure property is set to True in the build definition. I deliberately made a change in my project that breaks the build. When the build runs, I see the compilation error reflected in the TFS Build log within Visual Studio, but I get the error "Value cannot be null. Parameter name: WorkItemStore" when TFS Build next tries to generate a Work Item for the broken build. I tracked down the activity in DefaultTemplate.xaml (see the rather lengthy path to it below) where the Work Item is created for a broken build, and I see it uses the Microsoft.TeamFoundation.Build.Workflow.Activities.OpenWorkItem class to create the Work Item. The appropriate values seemed to be filled out in the Properties window for the Create Work Item activity, so I don't see where I can pass WorkItemStore to it and I don't even know appropriate values for this setting.   • Hibernate JDBCConnectionException: Communications link failure and java.io.EOFException: Can not read response from server

    I get a quite well-known using MySql jdbc driver : JDBCConnectionException: Communications link failure, java.io.EOFException: Can not read response from server. This is caused by the wait_timeout parameter in my.cnf. So I decided to use c3p0 pool connection along with Hibernate. Here is what I added to hibernate.cfg.xml : <property name="hibernate.connection.provider_class">org.hibernate.connection.C3P0ConnectionProvider</property> <property name="c3p0.min_size">10</property> <property name="c3p0.max_size">100</property> <property name="c3p0.timeout">1000</property> <property name="c3p0.preferredTestQuery">SELECT 1</property> <property name="c3p0.acquire_increment">1</property> <property name="c3p0.idle_test_period">2</property> <property name="c3p0.max_statements">50</property> idle_test_period is volontarily low for test purposes. Looking at the mysql logs I can see the "SELECT 1" request which is regularly sent to the mysql server so it works. Unfortunately I still get this EOF exception within my app if I wait longer than 'wait_timout' seconds (set to 10 for test purposes). I'm using Hibernate 4.1.1 and mysql-jdbc-connector 5.1.18. The formula for testing is: The average probe length using linear probing is roughly Success-- ( 1 + 1/(1-L)**2)/2 or Failure-- (1+1(1-L))/2. we are required to find the theoretical using the formula above which I did(just plug the load factor in the formula), then we have to calculate the empirical (which I not quite sure how to do). here is the rest of the requirements **For each load factor, 10,000 randomly generated positive ints between 1 and 50000 (inclusive) will be inserted into a table of the "right" size, where "right" is strictly based upon the load factor you are testing. Repeats are allowed. Be sure that your formula for randomly generated ints is correct. There is a class called Random in java.util. USE it! After a table of the right (based upon L) size is loaded with 10,000 ints, do 100 searches of newly generated random ints from the range of 1 to 50000. Compute the average probe length for each of the two formulas and indicate the denominators used in each calculationSo, for example, each test for a .5 load would have a table of size approximately 20,000 (adjusted to be prime) and similarly each test for a .9 load would have a table of approximate size 10,000/.9 (again adjusted to be prime).   • Failure remediation strategy for File I/O

    I'm doing buffered IO into a file, both read and write. I'm using fopen(), fseeko(), standard ANSI C file I/O functions. In all cases, I'm writing to a standard local file on a disk. How often do these file I/O operations fail, and what should the strategy be for failures? I'm not exactly looking for stats, but I'm looking for a general purpose statement on how far I should go to handle error conditions. For instance, I think everyone recognizes that malloc() could and probably will fail someday on some user's machine and the developer should check for a NULL being returned, but there is no great remediation strategy since it probably means the system is out of memory. At least, this seems to be the approach taken with malloc() on desktop systems, embedded systems are different. Likewise, is it worth reattempting a file I/O operation, or should I just consider a failure to be basically unrecoverable, etc. I would appreciate some code samples demonstrating proper usage, or a library guide reference that indicates how this is to be handled. Any other data is, of course, welcome.

    I built a desktop computer a couple years back with the following specs: CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 Yorkfield 2.5GHz 6MB L2 Cache LGA 775 95W Quad-Core Processor BX80580Q9300 Motherboard: EVGA 122-CK-NF68-T1 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard Video Card: Two EVGA 256-P2-N758-TR GeForce 8600GT SCC 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 SLI Supported Video Card PSU: SeaSonic S12 Energy Plus SS-550HT 550W ATX12V V2.3 / EPS12V V2.91 SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply Memory: Two G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400CL5D-4GBPQ Since its inception, the machine has periodically locked up, the regularlity having varied over the years from once a day to once a month. Typically, lockups happen once every few days. By "lockup" I mean my computer just freezes. The screen locks up, I can't move the mouse. Hitting keys on my keyboard that normally turn LEDs on or off on the keyboard (such as Caps Lock) no longer turn the LEDs on or off. If there was music playing at the time of the lockup, noise keeps coming out of the speakers, but it's just the current frequency/note that plays indefinitely. There is no BSOD. When such a lockup occurs I have to do a hard reboot by either turning off the computer or hitting the reset button. I have the most recent version of the NVIDIA hardware drivers, and update them semi-regularly, but that hasn't seemed to help. I am currently using Windows 7 x64, but was previously using Windows Server 2003 x64 and having the same lockup issues. My guess is that it's somehow video driver or motherboard related, but I don't know how to go about diagnosing this problem to narrow down which of the two is the culprit. Additional information re: cooling Regarding cooling... I've not installed any after-market cooling systems aside from two regular fans I scavenged from an older computer. The fan atop the CPU is the one that shipped with it. One of the two scavenged fans I added it located at the bottom tower of the corner, in an attempt to create some airflow from front to back. The second fan is pointed directly at the two video cards. SpeedFan installation and readings Per studiohack's suggestion, I installed SpeedFan, which provided the following temperature readings: GPU: 63C GPU: 65C System: 76C CPU: 64C AUX: 36C Core 0: 78C Core 1: 76C Core 2: 79C Core 3: 79C Update #3: Another Lockup :-( Well, I had another lockup last night. :-( SpeedFan reported the CPU temp at 38 C when it happened, and there was no spike in temperature leading up to the freeze. One thing I notice is that the freeze seems more likely to happen if I am watching a video. In fact, of the last 5 freezes over the past month, 4 of them have been while watching a video on Flickr. Not necessarily the same video, but a video nevertheless. I don't know if this is just coincidence or if it means anything. (As an aside, each night before bedtime my 2 year old daughter sits on my lap and watches some home videos on Flickr and, in the last month, has learned the phrase, "Uh oh, computer broke.") Update #4: MemTest86 and 3DMark06 Test Results: Per suggestions in the comments, I ran the MemTest86 overnight and it cycled through the 8 GB of memory 5 times without error. I also ran the 3DMark06 test without a problem (see my scores at http://3dmark.com/3dm06/15163549). So... what now? :-) Any further suggestions on what to check? Resolution I have never did figure out the particular problems, but based on the suggestions here and elsewhere, I'm presuming it was a motherboard issue. In any event, I recently upgraded my system, buying a new motherbeard, PSU, CPU, and RAM, and that new rig has been working splendidly the past several weeks. I am using the same graphic cards as in the old setup, so I think it's safe to reason that they weren't the cause of the problem.

  • Can I have a single solid state drive and a RAID array on the same machine?

    Hi- To summarize, i'm looking to use a single solid state drive as my primary drive, and two conventional sata drives in a RAID 1 configuration for data. I am trying to install 64-bit Windows 7 onto this configuration. Is this possible? Here are the details: I built a desktop that has been running 64-bit Vista on two 500Gb in a RAID 1 array for a few years. I just purchased an Intel X25-M 80Gb Sata Solid-State Drive, and was planning on using this a my primary drive, and keeping the RAID 1 array as my data drive. I added the SSD drive and in the RAID setup, configured it as a RAID 0 array of only one disk. Then, I tried to do a clean install of windows 7 64-bit, but got stuck in the "Missing driver for CD/DVD drive" black hole of selecting driver files and Windows telling me that i don't have the appropriate driver for my hardware. The missing hardware is NOT a CD/DVD drive, since i'm installing off of my only CD/DVD drive. Plus at one point i was able to point it at a driver for my raid controller, and then my hard drives magically showed up as browsable sources for finding drivers for some other unnamed device that setup couldn't recognize. After a few hours of trying drivers (this was a very slow process) i decided to reboot and look at the BIOS settings. I'm using an ASUS M2A-VM motherboard which has an ATI SB600 RAID controller on board. I switched the "On board SATA Type" setting from "SATA" to "AHCI" thinking that since AHCI is an Intel thing, this would help. Unfortunately, this abandoned my RAID configuration, and my previously mirrored drives are showing up as separate drives when i boot into my current windows installation. Am i trying to do the impossible here? Should i just buy a separate SATA/RAID PCI card and plug the SSD into that? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    I have a HUAWEI E173 usb stick to access the internet. It works normally on windows but I need to use it on my Ubuntu system. I plug it in, and after 25-20 seconds the status light turns green and blinks twice every 3 seconds. I see no changes in my system whatsoever, nothing gets installed, I don't get prompted for my PIN. I tried to create a connection using edit connections. I entered the following parameters: Turkey, Turkcell, My Plan is not listed, Internet. Nothing happens.   • Unable to format 16Gb Usb Disk

    Whenever i try to format my 16 GB usb disk using gparted it does to formating and when it refreshes then show unknown. tried disk utility as well. disk utility was able to format it into FAT but files vanish web the disk is removed and attached again. edit: the disk format completes every time but when using gparted it immediately show Unknown type file system and disk utility show FAT but when the Disk is unplugged and then connected the files are not there. either way it is unusable.

I'm also aware that the minimum recommended HDD requirement for ubuntu is 5GB. my question is specifically, can I squeeze the install of Ubuntu 11.10 onto a 4GB usb stick? Can I do so without downloading alternate version of Ubuntu? All I want is firefox wi-fi What I have live USB of Ubuntu 11.10 notebook without hdd internet access 4GB usb stick The reason why I need full install is to install new programs (skype) and do upgrade (of flash player)
