• ColdFusion 8 Slow Performance

  We have started a new CF8 app and it is running dog slow. A test where we go around ColdFusion (queries within a database utility) show normal speed (80ms). CF8 returns the same query in something like 60 to 80 seconds! I have been looking online and seeing lots of posts about CF8 and performance problems, but don't get any overall sense of a solution; just lots of people trying things and saying that they didn't have the problem with CF7. We are also seeing instability on the server, and some errors relating to garbage collection and the memory heap. We have a number of other applications running on CF8 and they perform adequately...our programmer is not an expert or a guru, he just plugs away. We have isolated this down to a single query that takes forever to return, so it is not a complicated test. Are there any known CF8 problems or obvious tweaks that we should consider trying? If we have to start over and learn a new environment, I will never make deadline. JoeBob

• How to manipulate *huge* amounts of data

  Hi there! I'm having the following problem. I need to store huge amounts of information (~32 GB) and be able to manipulate it as fast as possible. I'm wondering what's the best way to do it (combinations of programming language + OS + whatever you think its important). The structure of the information I'm using is a 4D array (NxNxNxN) of double-precission floats (8 bytes). Right now my solution is to slice the 4D array into 2D arrays and store them in separate files in the HDD of my computer. This is really slow and the manipulation of the data is unbearable, so this is no solution at all! I'm thinking on moving into a Supercomputing facility in my country and store all the information in the RAM, but I'm not sure how to implement an application to take advantage of it (I'm not a professional programmer, so any book/reference will help me a lot). An alternative solution I'm thinking on is to buy a dedicated server with lots of RAM, but I don't know for sure if that will solve the problem. So right now my ignorance doesn't let me choose the best way to proceed. What would you do if you were in this situation? I'm open to any idea. Thanks in advance!

• Does anyone have documentation on SHGetSysColor?

  I'm trying to find any reference for this function, but I haven't found anything. All I have is an obscure KB from Microsoft referencing that a programmer made boo-boo when coding a part of the Windows Mobile 6 where he should call SHGetSysColor but instead he called GetSysColor that gives a complete different color, for the same spec. From what I could gather the GetSysColor read a color value in the registry from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Color\SHColor or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Color\DefSHColor and returns the color according to the index. What I can't get a fix on is what each index mean, as I have 41 different colors in there. Googling for SHGetSysColor in gives me only 7 matches, two of them are the KB from Microsoft (one in English, the other in French) one is from a Russian site (which I don't read), yet another two are from the freepascal.org and one from Koders.com that is describing the commctl.def file. I went to the commctl.h trying to see if I could find reference tom this function, and found absolutely nothing. No search on MSDN, either fro Google, Bing, or the default MSDN search gave me any result. So, does anyone know what indexes are we talking about here?

• How to determine the size of a project (lines of code, function points, other)

  How would you evaluate project size? Part A: Before you start a project. Part B: For a complete project. I am interested in comparing unrelated projects. Here are some options: 1) Lines of code. I know that this is not a good metric of productivity but is this a reasonable measure of project size? If I wanted to estimate how long it would take to recreate a project would this be a reasonable way to do it? How many lines of code should I estimate a day? 2) Function Points. Functions points are defined as the number of: inputs outputs inquires internal files external interfaces Anyone have a veiw point on whether this is a good measure? Is there a way to **actually do this? Does anyone have another solution? Hours taken seems like it could be a useful metric but not solely. If I ask you what is a "bigger program" and give you two programs how would you approach the question? I have seen several discussions of this on stackover flow but most discuss how to measure programmer productivity. I am more interested in project size.

• Checking for nil in view in Ruby on Rails

  I've been working with Rails for a while now and one thing I find myself constantly doing is checking to see if some attribute or object is nil in my view code before I display it. I'm starting to wonder if this is always the best idea. My rationale so far has been that since my application(s) rely on user input unexpected things can occur. If I've learned one thing from programming in general it's that users inputting things the programmer didn't think of is one of the biggest sources of run-time errors. By checking for nil values I'm hoping to sidestep that and have my views gracefully handle the problem. The thing is though I typically for various reasons have similar nil or invalid value checks in either my model or controller code. I wouldn't call it code duplication in the strictest sense, but it just doesn't seem very DRY. If I've already checked for nil objects in my controller is it okay if my view just assumes the object truly isn't nil? For attributes that can be nil that are displayed it makes sense to me to check every time, but for the objects themselves I'm not sure what is the best practice. • The Implications of Modern Day Software Development Abstractions

  I am currently doing a dissertation about the implications or dangers that today's software development practices or teachings may have on the long term effects of programming. Just to make it clear: I am not attacking the use abstractions in programming. Every programmer knows that abstractions are the bases for modularity. What I want to investigate with this dissertation are the positive and negative effects abstractions can have in software development. As regards the positive, I am sure that I can find many sources that can confirm this. But what about the negative effects of abstractions? Do you have any stories to share that talk about when certain abstractions failed on you? The main concern is that many programmers today are programming against abstractions without having the faintest idea of what the abstraction is doing under-the-covers. This may very well lead to bugs and bad design. So, in you're opinion, how important is it that programmers actually know what is going below the abstractions? Taking a simple example from Joel's Back to Basics, C's strcat: void strcat( char* dest, char* src ) { while (*dest) dest++; while (*dest++ = *src++); } The above function hosts the issue that if you are doing string concatenation, the function is always starting from the beginning of the dest pointer to find the null terminator character, whereas if you write the function as follows, you will return a pointer to where the concatenated string is, which in turn allows you to pass this new pointer to the concatenation function as the *dest parameter: char* mystrcat( char* dest, char* src ) { while (*dest) dest++; while (*dest++ = *src++); return --dest; } Now this is obviously a very simple as regards abstractions, but it is the same concept I shall be investigating. Finally, what do you think about the issue that schools are preferring to teach Java instead of C and Lisp ? Can you please give your opinions and your says as regards this subject? • Is WordPress MVC compliant?

  Some people consider WordPress a blogging platform, some think of it as a CMS, some refer to WordPress as a development framework. Whichever it is, the question still remains. Is WordPress MVC compliant? I've read the forums and somebody asked about MVC about three years ago. There were some positive answers, and some negative ones. While nobody knows exactly what MVC is and everybody thinks of it in their own way, there's still a general concept that's present in all the discussions. I have little experience with MVC frameworks and there doesn't seem to be anything about the framework itself. Most of the MVC is done by the programmer, am I right? Now, going back to WordPress, could we consider the core rewrite engine (WP_Rewrite) the controller? Queries & plugin logic as the model? And themes as the view? Or am I getting it all wrong? • An Ideal Keyboard Layout for Programming

  I often hear complaints that programming languages that make heavy use of symbols for brevity, most notably C and C++ (I'm not going to touch APL), are difficult to type because they require frequent use of the shift key. A year or two ago, I got tired of it myself, downloaded Microsoft's Keyboard Layout Creator, made a few changes to my layout, and have not once looked back. The speed difference is astounding; with these few simple changes I am able to type C++ code around 30% faster, depending of course on how hairy it is; best of all, my typing speed in ordinary running text is not compromised. My questions are these: what alternate keyboard layouts have existed for programming, which have gained popularity, are any of them still in modern use, do you personally use any altered layout, and how can my layout be further optimised? I made the following changes to a standard QWERTY layout. (I don't use Dvorak, but there is a programmer Dvorak layout worth mentioning.) Swap numbers with symbols in the top row, because long or repeated literal numbers are typically replaced with named constants; Swap backquote with tilde, because backquotes are rare in many languages but destructors are common in C++; Swap minus with underscore, because underscores are common in identifiers; Swap curly braces with square brackets, because blocks are more common than subscripts; and Swap double quote with single quote, because strings are more common than character literals. I suspect this last is probably going to be the most controversial, as it interferes the most with running text by requiring use of shift to type common contractions. This layout has significantly increased my typing speed in C++, C, Java, and Perl, and somewhat increased it in LISP and Python.

• How do I store a string longer than 4000 characters in an Oracle Database using Java/JDBC?

  I’m not sure how to use Java/JDBC to insert a very long string into an Oracle database. I have a String which is greater than 4000 characters, lets say it’s 6000. I want to take this string and store it in an Oracle database. The way to do this seems to be with the CLOB datatype. Okay, so I declared the column as description CLOB. Now, when it comes time to actually insert the data, I have a prepared statement pstmt. It looks like pstmt = conn.prepareStatement(“INSERT INTO Table VALUES(?)”). So I want to use the method pstmt.setClob(). However, I don’t know how to create a Clob object with my String in it; there’s no constructor (presumably because it can be potentially much larger than available memory). How do I put my String into a Clob? Keep in mind I’m not a very experienced programmer; please try to keep the explanations as simple as possible. Efficiency, good practices, etc. are not a concern here, I just want the absolute easiest solution. I’d like to avoid downloading other packages if it all possible; right now I’m just using JDK 1.4 and what is labelled “ojdbc14.jar”. I've looked around a bit but I haven't been able to follow any of the explanations I've found. If you have a solution that doesn’t use Clobs, I’d be open to that as well, but it has to be one column.

• How do I send text to a UITextView?

  I'm new to iphone development. I'm a VB programmer who is trying to convert a VB application to an ipad app. I need some help with sending text to a UITextView. I want to first have a UIPickerView and then once the user hits a UIButton, a UITextView appears and the text is then generated by my source code code, line by line. The code would constantly be concatenating strings to the text. It would sort of go like this-- 1) User makes selections with UIPickerView. 2) User then hits UIButton. 3) UIPickerView is replaced on the screen with a UITextView. 4) The code does stuff. 5) The code adds the 1st line of text into the UITextView. 6) The code does more stuff. 7) The code then adds the 2nd line of text into the UITextView, retaining the 1st line that was already there. Steps 6 and 7 are repeated until the code is done. Does anyone know of any examples of this that I could look at? I am mostly interested in finding something like a youtube video, a webpage that explains the code or even a good book that covers this particular topic. I am finding that the sample codes that Apple has on this site goes over my head. In fact, I could probably benefit from a good book. But, I am looking for one that I would already know covers this particular topic, since it is so essential to the app that I am trying to build.

• Python/Sqlite program, write as browser app or desktop app?

  I am in the planning stages of rewriting an Access db I wrote several years ago in a full fledged program. I have very slight experience coding, but not enough to call myself a programmer by far. I'll definitely be learning as I go, so I'd like to keep everything as simple as possible. I've decided on Python and SQLite for my program, but I need help on my next decision. Here is my situation 1) It'll be a desktop program, run locally on each machine, all Windows 2) I would really like a nice looking GUI with colors, nice screens, menus, lists, etc, 3) I'm thinking about using a browser interface because (a) from what I've read, browser apps can look really great, and (b) I understand there are lots of free tools to assist in setting up the GUI/GUI code with drag and drop tools, so that helps my "keep it simple" goal. 4) I want the program to be totally portable so it runs completely from one single folder on a user's PC, with no installation(s) needed for it to run (If I did it as a browser app, isn't there the possibility that a user's browser settings could affect or break the app. How likely is this?) For my situation, should I make it a desktop app or browser app?

• Technology Plan - Which tools should I use?

  Hi, Soon, I'll start my own software company. My primary product/solution will be a Billing/Invoice Software. In a near future, I pretend to expand this first module to an ERP. My app should be able to run as a stand-alone application and as a Web-based application (so there will be, probably two GUI for the same Database). My problem, now, is to choose the right tools; I'm talking about what programming language(s) should I use, what kind of database should I choose, and stuff like that. I'm primarily a VB6 programmer, so probably I'll choose the .net framework (vb/c#). But I'm seriously thinking about Java. Java has 2 "pros" that I really like: write once, run anywhere and it is free (I think...). I've been thinking about RIAs too, but I just don't have any substantial feedback about them... Then, I'll need a report tool. Crystal Reports? HTML based Reports? Other? Databases: I'm not sure if I should use SQL-Server Express or PostgreSQL (or other). I'd be happy to hear any comments and advices Thanks

• How can I speed up the "finally get it" process?

  Hello, I am a hobby programmer and began when I was about 13. I'm currently going to college(freshman) for my computer science degree(which means, I'm still in the stuff I already know such as for loops). I've been programming professionally for a start up for about 9 months or so now. I have a serious problem though. I think that almost all of the code I write is perfect. Now I remember reading an article somewhere where there is like 3 stages of learning programming You don't know anything and you know you don't know anything. You don't know anything but you think you do. You finally get and accept that you don't know anything. (if someone finds that article tell me and I'll give a link) So right now, I'm at stage 2. How can I get to stage 3 quicker? The more and more of some people's code I read I think "this is complete rubbish, I would've done it like..." and I really dislike how I think that way. (and this fairly recently began happening, like over the past year)

• Which Stroustrup book should I use?

  I'm a C# programmer that is looking to branch out. I'm bored of writing business software and want to start getting into graphics programming and games/simulators. So I figured, although writing that stuff isn't impossible in managed code, the "right" way to do that would be to look to C++, of course focussing on the language first, then getting into OpenGL or DirectX (or whatever). Way way back ('98? '99?) I had tried and failed to really grasp Stroustrup's The C++ Programming Language. I know that this book is often not recommended for the beginner. Anyway, I picked it back up (in a much more recent printing) and I'm actually getting it and enjoying it. I also have a copy of his textbook, Programming: Principles and Practice Using C++, which, as I understand it, is really geared toward teaching programming, not necessarily C++. I'm certainly not arrogant enough to claim I don't have anything more to learn about programming, data structures, algoriths, etc., however I'm not a novice there either. So my question is, with the goal of gaining the broader and more real-world-useful understanding of C++ and given my background, on which should I focus? The denser (as I perceive it) TCPPPL or the gentler Programming? EDIT: I thank everyone for the responses. However, I've got a personal choice here to make between these two books. Granted there are other very good books out there, but I'm already a good length into both of the books I mention and I'd like to finish one. So, can anyone respond on which would be the better and why? Time is not an issue; I'm not looking (at this point) at an "accelerated" read.

• Object-oriented GUI development in python

  Hey guys, new programmer here. I have an assignment for class and I'm stuck... What I need to do is a create a GUI that gives someone a basic arithmetic problem in one box, asks the person to answer it, evaluates it, and tells you if you're right or wrong... • How can I marshal JSON to/from a POJO for BlackBerry Java?

  I'm writing a RIM BlackBerry client app. BlackBerry uses a simplified version of Java (no generics, no annotations, limited collections support, etc.; roughly a Java 1.3 dialect). My client will be speaking JSON to a server. We have a bunch of JAXB-generated POJOs, but they're heavily annotated, and they use various classes that aren't available on this platform (ArrayList, BigDecimal, XMLGregorianCalendar). We also have the XSD used by the JAXB-XJC compiler to generate those source files. Being the lazy programmer that I am, I'd really rather not manually translate the existing source files to Java 1.3-compatible JSON-marshalling classes. I already tried JAXB 1.0.6 xjc. Unfortunately, it doesn't understand the XSD file well enough to emit proper classes. Do you know of a tool that will take JAXB 2.0 XSD files and emit Java 1.3 classes? And do you know of a JSON marshalling library that works with old Java? I think I am doomed because JSON arrived around 2006, and Java 5 was released in late 2004, meaning that people probably wouldn't be writing JSON-parsing code for old versions of Java. However, it seems that there must be good JSON libraries for J2ME, which is why I'm holding out hope.

• Wrappers of primitive types in arraylist vs arrays

  Hi, In "Core java 1" I've read CAUTION: An ArrayList is far less efficient than an int[] array because each value is separately wrapped inside an object. You would only want to use this construct for small collections when programmer convenience is more important than efficiency. But in my software I've already used Arraylist instead of normal arrays due to some requirements, though "The software is supposed to have high performance and after I've read the quoted text I started to panic!" one thing I can change is changing double variables to Double so as to prevent auto boxing and I don't know if that is worth it or not, in next sample algorithm public void multiply(final double val) { final int rows = getSize1(); final int cols = getSize2(); for (int i = 0; i < rows; i++) { for (int j = 0; j < cols; j++) { this.get(i).set(j, this.get(i).get(j) * val); } } } My question is does changing double to Double makes a difference ? or that's a micro optimizing that won't affect anything ? keep in mind I might be using large matrices.2nd Should I consider redesigning the whole program again ?

• Analyzing Web Application Speed

  I'm a bit confused because the logical/programmer brain in me says that if all things are constant, the speed of a function must be constant. I am working on a PHP web application with jqGrid as a front end for showing the data. I am testing on my personal computer, so network traffic does not apply. I make an HTTP request to a PHP function, it returns the data, and then jqGrid renders it. What has me befuddled is that sometimes, Firebug reports that this is taking 300-600 milliseconds sometimes, and sometimes, it's taking 3.68 seconds. I can run the request over and over again, with very radically different response times. The query is the same. The number of users on the system is the same. No network latency. Same code. I'm not running other applications on the computer while testing. I could understand query caching improving performance on subsequent requests, but the speed is just fluctuating wildly with no rhyme or reason. So, my question is, what else can cause such variability in the response time? How can I determine what's doing it? More importantly, is there any way to get things more consistent?

• Java: extending Object class

  Hello, I'm writing (well, completing) an "extension" of Java which will help role programming. I translate my code to Java code with javacc. My compilers add to every declared class some code. Here's an example to be clearer: MyClass extends String implements ObjectWithRoles { //implements... is added /*Added by me */ public setRole(...){...} public ... /*Ends of stuff added*/ ...//myClass stuff } It adds Implements.. and the necessary methods to EVERY SINGLE CLASS you declare. Quite rough, isnt'it? It will be better if I write my methods in one class and all class extends that.. but.. if class already extends another class (just like the example)? I don't want to create a sort of wrapper that manage roles because i don't want that the programmer has to know much more than Java, few new reserved words and their use. My idea was to extends java.lang.Object.. but you can't. (right?) Other ideas? I'm new here, but I follow this site so thank you for reading and all the answers you give! (I apologize for english, I'm italian)

• Webforms vs. MVC. Once you start using MVC.. Do you ever go back to webforms?

  I checked out MVC months ago and didn't really get it.. but recently as I have become a better programmer I think it is making sense.. Here is my theory.. tell me if I got it Right In the 90s for Microsoft Devs we had Classic ASP. This mixed VBscript and HTML on the same page. So you needed to create all the HTML yourself and mix HTML and VBScript. This was not considered Ideal. Then .NET came along and everyone liked it because it was similiar to event driven VB 6 style programming. It created this abstraction of binding data to ASP Servier controls. It made getting Enumerated data easy to get on the screen with one line. Then recently Jquery and SOA concepts are mixed together.. Now people think.. Why create this extra layer of abstraction when I can just directly use .NET as a data provider and use jquery AJAX calls to get the data and create the HTML with it directly .. no need for the Webforms abstraction layer.. Sowe are back to creating HTML directly like we did in 1999. So MVC is all about saying Stop pretending like WEb programming is a VB6 app! Generate HTML directly! Am I missing anything? So I wonder.. for you people out there using MVC... is it the sort of things that once you get used to it you never want to go back to webforms??

But, please, listen. offtopic: I'm not a web-developer, and technically I'm not a programmer at all. I study mechatronics and deal mostly with control-engineering and digital-hardware. And I'm so pissed off that whenever I want to share some application (that would be helpful in my field) and embed it into the web, I need to know such a crazy amount of technologies, like html, css, javascript, flash, etc.. that takes time, which I could have been spending for the benefit of my own field. Right now I'm playing with hardware-description-languages and I'm writing some Python-libraries to convert one HDL into another. And I wanted to embed such feature on the web: http://xhdl2vhdl.appspot.com/ I wanted to implement some basic syntax highlighting (only keywords highlighting will be enough) so that the code could be readable. But the whole idea highlighting something in textarea is not trivial at all. The other difficulty is that the languages I work with are rare, and there are no out-of-box solutions for them. • I want to request JSON inside of a WordPress page.

  Hello Everyone, For the last few hours I've been trying to set up this http://code.google.com/apis/books/docs/dynamic-links.html on a WordPress blog. Google's API sends back a JSON response (which is supposed to be "put" into _GBSBookInfo variable). However, that variable never is assigned so my javascript callback function explodes saying the variable doesn't exist. So far, all of my javascript is in the WordPress header. I tried this outside of WordPress and it works fine. • Replacement for Hamachi for SVN access

  My company has been using Hamachi to access our SVN repository for a number of years. We are a small yet widely distributed development team with each programmer in a different country working from home. The server is hosted by a non-techie in our central office. Hamachi is useful here since it has a GUI and supports remote management. This system worked well for a while, but recently I have moved to a country with poor internet speeds. Hamachi will no longer connect 99% of the time - instead I get a "Probing..." message that doesn't resolve. It's certain to be a latency issue, as the same laptop will connect without problems when I cross the border and connect using a different ISP with better speeds. So I really need to replace Hamachi with some other VPN/protocol that handles latency better. The techie managing the repository is not comfortable installing and configuring Apache or IIS, so it looks like HTTP is out. I tried to convince my boss to go for a web hosting company, but he doesn't trust a 3rd party with our source. Any other recommended options / experiences out there for accessing our SVN repos that would be as simple as Hamachi for setup; but be more tolerant of network latency issues?

• Default boolean value in a array of record - Delphi

  Hi, I am helping out my company with some old delphi 7 code. There is a record declared at the start that is used throughout to store all the data we want outputted. type TOutput_Type = record result: String; resultoffset: String; selected: boolean; resultcategory: integer; end; and then an array of this is declared Output: array of TOutput_Type; The length is set at the start to a large value, as actual length is unknown. This array is used all over the place, but unfortunately the value selected is not always set when used. My problem is I am adding in a summary of the data, but because selected is not set, delphi seems to give it a random true or false status. Is there a way of setting all instances of selected as true at the start? Seems like a simple enough thing to do, but I'm not a delphi programmer so am unsure if its possible? I know I can go through and add in selected := true every time a new record is made, but I'd like to do it cleanly at the start if possible.... Thanks in advance
