  I'm having an issue running WatiN under CruiseControl.net, where on a .forceclose, watin is closing all open browser instances. I have multiple projects running under cruisecontrol, and its not uncommon for some of those projects to be building and testing at the same time. There has been more than one occasion where watin will close the browser window for a different project, causing it to fail. In my local tests, creating my watin instance under a new process fixes this issue. But running under cruisecontrol, when doing this, I lose my IE object: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. Running CC.net as a service CC.Net server is Windows 2003 IE6 Any thoughts?

• Do you use Phing?

  Does anyone use Phing to deploy PHP applications, and if so how do you use it? We currently have a hand-written "setup" script that we run whenever we deploy a new instance of our project. We just checkout from SVN and run it. It sets some basic configuration variables, installs or reloads the database, and generates a v-host for the site instance. I have often thought that maybe we should be using Phing. I haven't used ant much, so I don't have a real sense of what Phing is supposed to do other than script the copying of files from one place to another much as our setup script does. What are some more advanced uses that you can give examples of to help me understand why we would or would not want to integrate Phing into our process.

  Is there a Java library that lets you "deserialize" a properties file directly into an object instance? Example: say you have a file called init.properties: username=fisk password=frosk and a Java class with some properties: class Connection { private String username; private String password; public void setUsername(String username) { this.username = username; } public void setPassword(String password) { this.password = password; } } I want to do this: Connection c = MagicConfigurator.configure("init.properties", new Connection()) and have MagicConfigurator apply all the values from the properties file to the Connection instance.   When it comes to threads and orientation changes, it seems the normal thing to do is something like this: public class Bwent extends Activity { private static Bwent instance; @Override public void onCreate(Bundle icicle) { super.onCreate(icicle); instance = this; } //... That way, if you're making a network request with a thread, and someone changes the orientation of the phone, the thread will know to use the new Activity. However, is it possible that the thread could finish during the time Android is destroying the old Activity and creating a new one? Is there a moment in the process where the thread still might be pointing to the wrong Activity, or a partially destroyed activity? It seems like there shouldn't be, but even using a Handler created in the main thread, I'm having intermittent issues with a thread trying to update an object that no longer exists. It's rare, but it does happen.

• Android service puts multiple instances of an activity in the history

  I'm making a music player. When you press play, it loads a notification into the OnGoing section. When you go anywhere else in the system, I want the music to keep playing. All of this is fine. The problem is that when I relaunch my activity from the Notification, it adds a task to the history stack each time, so if I hit back, I have to see the instance of Activity B from where I pressed play, and from every time I clicked on the notification to go back to Activity B. I want the instance of Activity B that I launch from the notification (via the service) to be the only copy of that Activity in the history. I've been playing around with various Intent flags and Activity attributes in the manifest, but I haven't found the proper combination.

  Say I have two type classes defined as follows that are identical in function but different in names: class Monad m where (>>=) :: m a -> (a -> m b) -> m b return :: a -> m a class PhantomMonad p where pbind :: p a -> (a -> p b) -> p b preturn :: a -> p b Is there a way to tie these two classes together so something that is an instance of PhantomMonad will automatically be an instance of Monad, or will instances for each class have to be explicitly written? There are many threads iterating this loop and based on the key they are looking for, a lazy instance is created and returned. lazyObject should not be created more that one time. Although Lazy class is for doing so and despite of the used lock, under high threading I have more than one instance created (I track this with a Interlocked.Increment on a volatile shared int and log it somewhere). The problem is I don't have access to definition of Lazy and MEF defines how the Lazy class create objects. My questions: 1) Why the lock doesn't work ? 2) Should I use an array of locks instead of one lock for performance improvement ?

The excerpt answer provided by bbum is below: The problem isn't the assignment, it is much more likely that you declared your instance variable to be BOOL *initialBroadcast;. There is no reason to declare the instance variable to be a pointer (at least not unless you really do need a C array of BOOLs).. Remove the * from the declaration. 1.Is there anything wrong in using a pointer variable even when I do not have to maintain an array of BOOLs? 2.I think even if avoiding them a good practice, it is not specific to objective-C and applies to all programming languages which has pointers. • Where best to instantiate and close a Silverlight-enabled WCF Service from the Silverlight app?

  When using a Silverlight-enabled WCF service, where is the best place to instantiate the service and to call the CloseAsync() method? Should you say, instantiate an instance each time you need to make a call to the service, or is it better to just instantiate an instance as a variable of the UserControl that will be making the calls? Then, where is it better to call the CloseAsync method? Should you call it in each of the "someServiceCall_completed" event methods? Or, if created as a variable of the UserControl class, is there a single place to call it? Like a Dispose method, or something equivalent for the UserControl class. Thanks, Jeff

• Save or update for FK relationship Sqlalchemy

  I've googled, but haven't been able to find the answer to this seemingly simple question. I have two relations, a customer and an order. Each order is associated to a single cusomter, and therefore has a FK relationship to the customer table. The customer relation only stores customer names, and I have set a unique constraint on the customer table barring duplicate names. Let's say I create a new order instance and set a customer for the order. Something like: order_instance.customer = Customer("customer name") When I save the order instance, SqlAlchemy will complain if a customer with this name already exists in the customer table. How do I specify to SqlAlchemy to insert into the customer table if a customer with this name doesn't already exist, or just ignore (or even update) to the customer relation? I don't really want to have to check each time if a customer with some name already exists...

• Can a primary key be equal to a different column?

  I know that a primary key must be unique, but is it okay for a primary key to be equal to a different column in the same table by coincidence? For instance, I have 2 tables. One table is called person that holds information about a person (ID, email, telephone, address, name). The other table is staff (ID, pID(person ID), salary, position). In staff the ID column is the primary key and is used to uniquely identify a staff member. The number is from 1 - 100. However, the pID (person ID) may be equal to the ID. For instance the staff ID may be 1 and the pID that it references to may be equal to 1. Is that okay?

• How to make Amazon EC2 not cause SSL invalid error in browser

  I use SSL certificate for a web site I set up in Amazon EC2 Machine Instance. The SSL certificate is for one domain name, which is not public DNS for the Amazon Machine Instance. The browser always complains the mismatch in the domain name because it compares the domain name of the SSL certificate to the Amazon public DNS. How can I set up not to cause this problem? I tried both domain name forwarding and A Record setting. Maybe it's because I'm not so familiar with Amazon EC2 and I haven't configured domain name correctly. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

• iPhone developing FOR jailbroken devices (not USING jailbroken devices!)

  I would like to dig into developing for jailbroken devices, just to test what the device could do. I would like, for instance, to alter the ipod music based on geo-location, so i have to program a new daemon that runs in background and fetch gps informations at regular interlavs and then make something with them. Longitude, longitude, for instance, does exactly this, even when the device is locked, and then upload the informations on google latidude. I have some experience as an iphone developer, but i'm not sure on where to find documentation to accomplish such a task. I know about the books "iphone open application development" and "the iphone developer's coockbook", but i don't own them and i'm not sure they have what i'm looking for. Any advice on this?

• In PLT scheme, can I export functions after another function has been called?

  I'm trying to create a binding to libpython using scheme's FFI. To do this, I have to get the location of python, create the ffi-lib, and then create functions from it. So for instance I could do this: (module pyscheme scheme (require foreign) (unsafe!) (define (link-python [lib "/usr/lib/libpython2.6.so"]) (ffi-lib lib)) This is all well and good, but I can't think of a way to export functions. For instance, I could do something like this: (define Py_Initialize (get-ffi-obj "Py_Initialize" libpython (_fun -> _void))) ...but then I'd have to store a reference to libpython (created by link-python) globally somehow. Is there any way to export these functions once link-python is called? In other words, I'd like someone using the module to be able to do this: (require pyscheme) (link-python) (Py_Initialize) ...or this: (require pyscheme) (link-python "/weird/location/for/libpython.so") (Py_Initialize) ...but have this give an error: (require pyscheme) (Py_Initialize) How can I do this?

  In C++ there is a concept of a "friend", which has access to a class's private variables and functions. So if you have: class Foo { friend class Bar; private: int x; } then any instance of the class Bar can modify any Foo instance's x member, despite it being private, because Bar is a friend of Foo. Now I have a situation in Java where this functionality would come in handy. There are three classes: Database, Modifier, Viewer. The Database is just a collection of variables (like a struct). Modifier should be "friends" with Database; that is, it should be able to read and write its variables directly. But Viewer should only be able to read Database's variables. How is this best implemented? Is there a good way to enforce Viewer's read-only access of Database?

  Hi, I am pretty new to iPhone programming. I have a navBar with three views. I need to control audio from all of the views. I only want one audio stream to play at a time. I was thinking that it would be smart to let my AppDelegate have an instance of my audioplaying class and let the three other views use that instance to control the audio. My problem is that I don´t know how my views can use the audioplaying class in my AppDelegate. Is this the best approach and if so, how? Is there a better way?

  I have classes Compose and Haiku, each connected to a view controller in IB. Haiku is instantiated in Compose as ghhaiku. Haiku has an array, self.arrayOfHaiku, with 117 members. But in Compose, self.ghhaiku.arrayOfHaiku has no members. I think the problem is that I haven't linked the instance of Haiku that has the 117-member array with the instance of Haiku created in Compose. But how do I do that? (I could of course be totally wrong and the problem could be something else, but that seems to make intuitive sense.) Any thoughts?

  Hello, Using Visual Studio 2010 10.0.20319.1 RTMRel and SQL Server Express 10.50.1600.1 I'm trying to add a new SQL Server Database .mdf, however, I receive the following error: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 25 – Connection string is not valid) I have enabled TCP/IP and Named Pipelines, added Firewall Exceptions for Sql Server, I am successfully connecting from VS in the Server Explorer window. I would appreciate if someone can pint me to a solution to my problem. Thank you.

• Prevent Erroneous Property Assignment

  Porting android applications to iphone applications always gives me the following pattern that I accidentally create: - (void) myFunc:(id)prop { self.property = property; } Which instead should be: - (void) myFunc:(id)prop { self.property = prop; } This always causes my program to quietly break because property gets reset to its existing value rather than being set to the new value, 'prop'. I cannot name the parameter 'prop' to 'property' since the compile complains that the parameter masks the instance variables visibility. Is there a good way to avoid this situation? There are no compiler warnings. Is there a way to make xcode prevent this? I cannot see very many situations where you would set a property to the value of its underlying instance variable (maybe to trigger a KVO binding?), but I don't see myself doing that in majority of cases. I understand the above code is synthetic and should be done with @synthesize, but I am just using it as a simplified example to illustrate my point.
