• PHP and storing stats

  Using PHP5 and the latest version of MySQL I want to be able to track impressions and clicks for business listings. My question is if I did this myself what would be the best method in storing it so I can run reports? Before I just had a table that had the listing id, user ip address and if it was a click or impression as well as the date it was tracked. However the database itself is approaching 2GB of data and its very slow, part of the problem is its a pretty simple script that includes impressions and clicks from anyone including search engines and basically anyone or anything that accesses the listing page. Is there an api or file out there that has an update to date list that can detect if the person viewing is a actually person and not a spider so I dont fill up the database with unneeded stats? Just looking for suggestions, do I just have a raw database that gets just the hits then a cron job at night tally up for the day for each listing for each ip and store the cumulative stats in a different table? Also what type of database should it be? Innodb? MyISAM?

• MySQL - Counting rows in preparation for greatest-n-per-group not working?

  Referring to SO and other sites have given me examples of how to use MySQL to create a 'greatest-n-per-group' query. My variant on this would be to have a query that returns the first 3 rows of each category. As the basis for this I need to sort my data into a usable sequence and that is where my problems start. Running just the sequence query with row numbering shows that changes in category are mostly ignored. I should have 35 categories returning rows but only 5 do so. My query: set @c:=0; set @a:=0; SELECT IF(@c = tdg, @a:=@a+1, @a:=1) AS rownum, (@c:=tdg) , julian_day, sequence, complete, year, tdg FROM tsd WHERE complete = 0 order by tdg, year, julian_day, sequence Do I have a syntax mistake with this query?

• Bitmap manipulation as a referenced object

  I am working with a Bitmap object that I add annotations or copyright material to the image and then return the modified bitmap. My problem is that the Bitmap won't hold the changes made to it as it moves along the chain. I am treating it as a reference type and would assume that as it gets passed to each class it would carry the changes made to it. I have verified that the code inside of the MarkImage() classes does function, but which ever one gets called last is the one that has changes. • What are you supposed to do with old SVN branches?

  We had a SVN branch recently that had been merged back to trunk, and some more work on that feature/functional area was needed. I suggested using the same branch but was told you shouldn't re-use a branch once it has been integrated into trunk (a reference in SVN docs was given, I can't find it now). That suggests a branch is fairly useless once you merge back to trunk, so my question is once a branch is no longer needed, should it simply be deleted or kept?

• Beginner question about getting reference to cin

  I'm having problems wrapping my head around this. I have a function void foo(istream& input) { input = cin; } This fails (I'm assuming because cin isn't supposed to be "copyable". however, this works void foo(istream& input) { istream& baz = cin; } Is there a reason that I can get a reference to cin in baz but I cannot assign it to input? • How can you prevent a window being captured by Print-Screen?

  I noticed a few times than when I print-screen while Media Player is running, the content is replaced with a grey rectangle. I've no idea if it's deliberate due to DRM, or some technical issue, but it struck me that being able to deliberately block screen-capture might be a useful feature in some scenarios. Is there some specific message each HWND gets for print-screen - does Windows do a special repaint or simply dump buffers to the clipboard? I guess I'd prefer to focus this on Win32 specifically, but as long as it's Windows-related then fine.

• How big can a SQL Server row be before it's a problem?

  Occasionally I run into this limitation using SQL Server 2000 that a row size can not exceed 8K bytes. SQL Server 2000 isn't really state of the art, but it's still in production code and because some tables are denormalized that's a problem. However, this seems to be a non issue with SQL Server 2005. At least, it won't complain that row sizes are bigger than 8K, but what happens instead and why was this a problem in SQL Server 2000? Do I need to care about my rows growing? Should I try and avoid large rows? Are varchar(max) and varbinary(max) a solution or expensive, in terms of size in database and/or CPU time? Why do I care at all about specifying the length of a particular column, when it seems like it's just a matter of time before someones going to hit that upper limit?

  Hi, I've been messing with Haskell few days and stumbled into a problem. I need a method that returns a random list of integers ( Rand [[Int]] ). So, I defined a type: type Rand a = StdGen -> (a, StdGen). I was able to produce Rand IO Integer and Rand [IO Integer] ( (returnR lst) :: StdGen -> ([IO Integer], StdGen) ) somehow. Any tips how to produce Rand [[Int]]?

• Is it possible to take a half done web application that has been started using VB.NET and continue u

  A guy came to me there recently with a half done web app that has been created using VB.NET, nothing major, just a normal site. His original programmer couldn't continue so he wants me to finish it. Problem is I don't program using VB.NET nor have I any intention of learning it for a project this small. Usually I would run from something like this but I need the cash. Should I take the project and continue it using C# or just leave it. Has anyone had a similar experience and how did it turn out.

• Confusion over manual/automatic sizing of Flash Sprite Objects

  If I have a custom class subclassing Sprite and it draws some simple objects, how does this work with respect to the Sprite.width & Sprite.height properties? It seems I can draw (for example) a rectangle of any size, bigger than the Sprite size. Similarly if I set the width/height properties, what happens to the content already drawn? As a use-case, I might have a stick-man which is drawn as a set of lines, I want to set the man's height and the rendering is scaled to this. Are there any issues with width/height being auto-calculated or am I misunderstanding what these properties actually mean?

I am trying to read with ifstream and convert it. string things = "10 11 12 -10"; int i1; int i2; int i3; int i4; stringstream into; into << things; into >> i1; into >> i2; into >> i3; into >> i4; I expect it to be : i1 = 10 i2 = 11 i3 = 12 i4 = -10 is that correct? Can the same stringstream variable be used multiple times? When I tried, the first time was ok but everything else later on is just 0.

  if I have 4 variables startTime; endTime; startMerid; endMerid; startMarid and endMarid are either going to be 'AM' or 'PM'. but startTime and endTime are going to be strings like 'dd:dd' so it may be start:12:30 PM and end:5:30 PM How can I validate that the end time is not before the start time? I looked in the html source to confirm all content calls (href, src, etc...) are sent via https. My CSS files use relative paths. But I'm still getting these warnings. Is there an easy way to track down which items are not sent via HTTPS?

• I can't find a DirectX installer to run from my installer.

  I tried this one. But it's the annoying one which asks you where to extract temp files, my users won't know what this means. I also tried the web installer, but you're not strictly allowed to use this. I don't really follow the windows setup stuff, but is there a single .EXE I am allowed to distribute and run, which just works (for DX 9.0C) with some command-line args? Or some other way, which can can described in idiot-proof steps and and called in one command-line argument from an installer script like Inno?

• Should we use Nexus or Artifactory for a Maven Repo?

  We are using Maven for a large build process ( 100 modules). We have been storing our external dependencies in source control, and using that to update a local repo. However, we are ready to graduate to a local repo that can cache central so that we don't have to proactively download all 3rd parties (but we can still have a local repo to pull from). In addition we want to publish our internal build artifacts from a nightly build so that developers don't have to build the world. We are considering Nexus and Artifactory. What are the reasons for preferring one over the other? Are there others we should be considering?

• Core Data Errors vs Exceptions Part 3

  My question is similar to this one. Background I'm creating a large number of objects in a core data store using NSOperations to speed things up. I've followed all the Core Data multithreading rules - I've got a single persistent store coordinator and a managed object context per thread that on save is merging back to the main managed object context. The Problem When the number of threads running at once is more than 1, I get the exception logged on save of my core data store: NSExceptionHandler has recorded the following exception: NSInternalInconsistencyException -- optimistic locking failure What I've Tried My code that creates new entities is quite complex - it makes entities that have relationships with other entities that could be being created in a separate thread. If I replace my object creation routine with some very simple code just making non-related entries, everything works perfectly. Initially, as well as the exceptions, I was getting a save error saying core data couldn't save due to the merge failing. I read the docs and realised I needed a merge policy on the Managed Object Context I was saving to. I set this up and as this question states, the save error goes away, but the exception remains. My Question Do I need to worry about these exceptions? If I do need to get rid of the exceptions, any ideas on how I do it?

• Converting OpenGL coordinates to lower UIView (and UIImagePickerController)

  I am new to OpenGL on the iPhone. I am developing an iPhone app similar to a barcode reader but with an extra OpenGL layer. The bottommost layer is UIImagePickerController, then I use UIView on top and draw a rectangle at certain coordinates on the iPhone screen. So far everything is OK. Then I am trying to draw an OpenGL 3-D model in that rectangle. I am able to load a 3-D model in the iPhone based on this code here - http://iphonedevelopment.blogspot.com/2008/12/start-of-wavefront-obj-file-loader.html I am not able to transform the coordinates of the rectangle into OpenGL coordinates. Appreciate any help. Do I need to use a matrix to translate the currentPosition of the 3-D model so it is drawn within myRect?   The latest changesets to Ruby 1.9.2 no longer make the current directory . part of your LOAD_PATH. I have a non-trivial number of Rakefiles that assume that . is part of the LOAD_PATH, so this broke them. Was there a particular justification for doing this? As for a fix, adding $: << "." everywhere works, but seems incredibly hacky and I don't want to do that. What's the preferred way to make my Rakefiles 1.9.2+ compatible?

• Why does my git push hang after successfully pushing?

  On a newly set up ssh git repo, whenever I push, I get normal output like this: ? git push Counting objects: 15, done. Delta compression using up to 4 threads. Compressing objects: 100% (9/9), done. Writing objects: 100% (9/9), 989 bytes, done. Total 9 (delta 7), reused 0 (delta 0) It happens very quickly, and the changes are immediately available on the server repo. But the output hangs there for about a minute, and then finishes with: To [email protected]:baz.git c8c391c..1de5e80 branch_name -> branch_name If I control-c before it finishes, everything seems to continue to be normal and healthy, locally and remotely. What is it doing while hanging? Is something configured incorrectly on the server side?
