  • set tap0 using virt-manager for bridged wireless

    - by DaveO
After 3 days I finally have kvm guests working on the network via wireless (link below - thanks!): My network is 192.168.1.0/24 on the host: sudo sh -c "echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward" sudo tunctl -t tap0 sudo ip link set tap0 up sudo ip addr add 192.168.1.25/24 dev tap0 sudo route add -host 192.168.1.30 dev tap0 sudo parprouted wlan0 tap0 on the guest: auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.1.30 netmask 255.255.255.0 network 192.168.1.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255 gateway 192.168.1.25 and start the guest: sudo kvm /path/to/guest.img -net nic,macaddr=DE:AD:BE:EF:90:26 -net tap,ifname=tap0,script=no This works great and I can ping the local network and the internet back and forth between the guest. But how do I add these settings to the guest's xml config so I can start the guest via virt-manager with the same nic settings? ref: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/debian-26/kvm-wireless-bridge-network-691953/

  • Shrink a mounted LVM partition

    - by javanix
I fear I already know the answer to this question, but here goes. I need to carve out a new partition on a running system. /var/ is mounted from an LVM volume (hdd1_vg-var) and has only 3% used disk space. / is mounted separately (hdd1_vg-root) and has about 80% used disk space. Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/**/hdd1_vg-root 2.0G 1.4G 481M 75% / /dev/**/hdd1_vg-var 33G 699M 31G 3% /var Unfortunately I don't have any free extents to grow this partition organically - vgdisplay shows: Total PE 10000 Alloc PE / Size 10000 / 39.06 GB Free PE / Size 0 / 0 So seeing that I have all this free disk space on /var/, can I shrink /var/ without un-mounting it or is this just a pipe dream? I am really hoping to be able to do this work on a running system - un-mounting would of course not be difficult but it would interfere with system functionality.

  • Increasing a Linux partition once VM size increased in vSphere?

    - by dannymcc
I have a Ubuntu 12.04 VM running on VMWares ESXi 5.1. The server (VM) itself has run out of space, the results of df -h are as follows: Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda1 19G 17G 1.2G 94% / udev 490M 4.0K 490M 1% /dev tmpfs 200M 232K 199M 1% /run none 5.0M 0 5.0M 0% /run/lock none 498M 0 498M 0% /run/shm The original VM HDD size was just under 19GB which is I have now increased to 100GB within the vCenter GUI: Is there a simple way of doing this? The VM doesn't seem to acknowledge the increase at all.

  • Stop Munin messages from /var/log/syslog

    - by Sparsh Gupta
Hello I am using munin on a system which is adding a log entry in syslog everytime the munin-node cron job executes. It is not an issue but it sometimes makes other errors spotting difficult. There are entries like Feb 28 07:05:01 li235-57 CRON[2634]: (root) CMD (if [ -x /etc/munin/plugins/apt_all ]; then /etc/munin/plugins/apt_all update 7200 12 >/dev/null; elif [ -x /etc/munin/plugins/apt ]; then /etc/munin/plugins/apt update 7200 12 >/dev/null; fi) every 5 minutes and I was wondering how can I stop the messages going into syslog. For munin specific errors I anyways have to keep an eye on /var/log/munin/* Thanks Sparsh

  • Sporadic disk clicking sound

    - by Abdó
Hi, I'm having some unusual and sporadic hard disk clicking issues. Here is a cronological description of the facts. I'm using an ASUS P6T-SE with Intel Core i7, 6Gb RAM 600W Power supply and ATI4670 graphics, running Ubuntu 10.10. About one month ago my hard disk (SATA II Seagate Barracuda 1Tb 7200 rpm) started making a clicking sound: a sort of loud tic-tac, every second or so, when involved in disk activity. The system was clearly slower than before at disk access, but it was functional and I could not find any signal of trouble on the linux logs. I disconnected the disk and tried an older SATA drive I had around: no problem with it. Then I reconnected the Seagate disk, and the problem was mysteriously gone. Ubuntu booted normally, usual speed, no clicking. A couple of weeks later, the problem reappeared. I tried disconnecting reconnecting (as it somehow solved the problem before) without luck. So, despite it was a rather new drive, I assumed it was a hardware issue, made backups and bought a new drive. The new drive is a SATA II Seagate Barracuda 1.5 Tb 7200 rpm. I installed both drives at the same time, with the intention of transferring my files from on to the other. To my surprise, when I booted the computer with both drives, both started making the clicking sound !! Even worse, I removed the old drive, leaving the unformated new drive connected, and booted from a LiveCD. It kept clicking ! Puzzled by this, I tried both drives on my laptop with a SATA to USB cable. At the moment I connected any of them, they made one or two unusual clicks and immediately stopped doing that and worked normally. The old drive I thought almost dead, was working like a charm as if nothing happened. Then I thought: "ok, it must be the motherboard. Let's try again". So, I reconnected the old drive to the ASUS P6T motherboard (the same cables and SATA port as before), and it worked as if nothing happened ! The problem was gone again. The new 1.5 Tb drive was also working ok: No clicking nor slowdown. So I left the old 1Tb disk connected and kept using the computer daily during 3 weeks, until today it happened again. Now I don't really know what to do or check. I'm not even sure if it is a hardware issue any more ! This is rather annoying as it seems it happens with a period of 2 or 3 weeks and I have no means of forcing it to happen. Does anyone have a clue of what can causes this behaviour or have any suggestions of things I should check when it happens again ? What I did today is checking some SMART parameters Error log: smartctl -l error /dev/sda. No errors Short selftest: smartctl -t short /dev/sda. No errors Disk Health check: smartctl -H /dev/sda. passed And here are the vendor specific parameters (smartctl -A /dev/sda) Which I'm not quite sure how to interpret. === START OF READ SMART DATA SECTION === SMART Attributes Data Structure revision number: 10 Vendor Specific SMART Attributes with Thresholds: ID# ATTRIBUTE_NAME FLAG VALUE WORST THRESH TYPE UPDATED WHEN_FAILED RAW_VALUE 1 Raw_Read_Error_Rate 0x000f 120 099 006 Pre-fail Always - 235962588 3 Spin_Up_Time 0x0003 095 095 000 Pre-fail Always - 0 4 Start_Stop_Count 0x0032 100 100 020 Old_age Always - 187 5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct 0x0033 100 100 036 Pre-fail Always - 0 7 Seek_Error_Rate 0x000f 072 060 030 Pre-fail Always - 16348045 9 Power_On_Hours 0x0032 096 096 000 Old_age Always - 3590 10 Spin_Retry_Count 0x0013 100 100 097 Pre-fail Always - 0 12 Power_Cycle_Count 0x0032 100 100 020 Old_age Always - 94 183 Runtime_Bad_Block 0x0032 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 0 184 End-to-End_Error 0x0032 100 100 099 Old_age Always - 0 187 Reported_Uncorrect 0x0032 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 0 188 Command_Timeout 0x0032 100 097 000 Old_age Always - 4295164029 189 High_Fly_Writes 0x003a 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 0 190 Airflow_Temperature_Cel 0x0022 070 057 045 Old_age Always - 30 (Lifetime Min/Max 19/31) 194 Temperature_Celsius 0x0022 030 043 000 Old_age Always - 30 (0 18 0 0) 195 Hardware_ECC_Recovered 0x001a 037 026 000 Old_age Always - 235962588 197 Current_Pending_Sector 0x0012 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 0 198 Offline_Uncorrectable 0x0010 100 100 000 Old_age Offline - 0 199 UDMA_CRC_Error_Count 0x003e 200 200 000 Old_age Always - 0 240 Head_Flying_Hours 0x0000 100 253 000 Old_age Offline - 73950746906346 241 Total_LBAs_Written 0x0000 100 253 000 Old_age Offline - 1832967731 242 Total_LBAs_Read 0x0000 100 253 000 Old_age Offline - 3294986902 Any clue to this mystery will be really welcome. • How to stop ethernet interface in bridge configuration from obtaining IP address via DHCP

    - by user71061
Hi! I'm trying to configure openvpn in bridging configuration. First step of doing this requires creating bridge interface (br0), bridging together physical ethernet interface (eth0) and logical tap0 interface. This can be done with simple script but I want to use less popular approach, configuring bridge interface entirely via /etc/network/interfaces file (on Debian linux). So I have removed all eth0 definitions form /etc/network/interfaces and replaced if with following br0 definition: auto br0 iface br0 inet static pre-up openvpn --mktun --dev tap0 address 10.0.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 bridge_ports eth0 tap0 post-down openvpn --rmtun --dev tap0 This works as I expected, but there is only one problem: interface eth0 is part of bridge interface br0 AND it also receive it's own IP address from my DHCP server (located on same LAN where eth0 is connected). My questions is: how to stop eth0 interface from obtaining it's own IP address? (It should only be part of br0 bridge).

  • Apache: Use Specific Applicaion for CGI scripts

    - by RandomInsano
I have two servers, one in production and one for development. The production server is Solaris, dev is FreeBSD. Because of this, python is installed in different directories. I'm using Python right now for making CGI scripts, and needing to remember to swap my hashbangs when I copy from dev to production is a little annoying (Same issue for SVN updates depending on which server I'm comitting from). Is there a way to configure apache so that I no longer need to hashbangs? Like, if it would lauch python and supply the CGI script for it? Might be a bit of a stretch, but no harm in asking

  • Suspicious process running under user named

    - by Amit
I get a lot of emails reporting this and I want this issue to auto correct itself. These process are run by my server and are a result of updates, session deletion and other legitimate session handling reported as false positives. Here's a sample report: Time: Sat Oct 20 00:00:03 2012 -0400 PID: 20077 Account: named Uptime: 326117 seconds Executable: /usr/sbin/nsd\00507d27e9\0053\00\00\00\00\00 (deleted) The file system shows this process is running an executable file that has been deleted. This typically happens when the original file has been replaced by a new file when the application is updated. To prevent this being reported again, restart the process that runs this excecutable file. See csf.conf and the PT_DELETED text for more information about the security implications of processes running deleted executable files. • Modifying the initrd.img to run additional binaries in a PXE booted RHEL 6

    - by Charles Long
I am trying to add additional automation to our existing RHEL 6 (or Oralce's implementation thereof) PXE install process by running a script in the %pre section of my kickstart config that call hpacucli, HP's raid device configuration binary. My approach has been to modify the PXE served initrd.img. I've unpacked the initrd.img and copied in the required libraries, binaries, and scripts but when the system boots using the modified initrd.img, the modified /lib (and /lib_64) are moved aside to /lib_old and /lib is linked to the /mnt/runtime/lib. How can I change this configuration so that the /lib is not moved (unlikely) or required libraries are available in the runtime /mnt/runtime/lib? To test and confirm this I've been able to get the install process to move to the 6th virtual console, which allows me to see errors, and then open a shell (a useful debugging mechanism). %pre exec /dev/tty6 2 /dev/tty6 chvt 6 /bin/sh

  • Sendmail Alias for Nonlocal Email Account

    - by Mark Roddy
I admin a server which is running a number of web applications for a software dev team (source control, bug tracking, etc). The server has sendmail running solely as a transport to the departmental email server over which I have no control. We have someone who is still in the department but no longer on the dev team so I need to configure the transport agent to redirect all outgoing email (which would be coming from these applications) to the person that has taken their place. I added an entry in /etc/aliases like such: [email protected]: [email protected] But when I run /etc/init.d/sendmail newaliases I get the following error: /etc/mail/aliases: line 32: [email protected]... cannot alias non-local names So clearly I'm doing something I shouldn't. Is there a way to get aliases to work with non-local names or alternatively is their a way to accomplish my goal of redirecting outgoing mail for this user to another one? Technical Specs if the matter: Ubuntu 6.06 sendmail 8.13 (ubuntu provided package)

  • How to determine the best byte size for the dd command

    - by James
I know that doing a dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/hdb does a deep hard drive copy. I've heard that people have been able to speed up the process by increasing the number of bytes that are read and written at a time (512) with the "bs" option. People have suggested that the optimal byte size is due to sector size. I personally think it would have something to do with the amount of cache that the hard drive has. My question is: What determines the ideal byte size for copying from a hard drive? and Why does that determine the ideal byte size?

  • LAMP: How do I set up http://myservername.com/~user access?

    - by Travesty3
Been trying to Google this, but I can't figure out good search terms to find any info about what I need, since I don't really know what it's called. I'm pretty much being thrown to the wolves to figure out how to set up a LAMP server. We had someone who knew how to do it, he set one up and then quit. It was set up so that when I went to "http://{myservername}.com/~travis" it showed the contents of my /home/travis/public_html folder. This worked fine, then we lost power and the server restarted (I know, battery backup, but this is a dev server in a dev building so it's OK). Now, the browser can't find that URL. I also need to know how to set this up on a new server, so instead of wasting time diagnosing this problem (probably just something dumb I did messing with settings or something), I really need to know how to set this up from scratch. Thanks for taking the time to read this and (hopefully) answer!

  • startup Error for Zend Server CE

    - by Jamison
    Hello! I've got a strange startup error for Zend Server CE - it's probably easy to fix, but I don't have much experience with Zend Server! I'm running the latest OSX 10.6.6 and the latest Zend Server CE for Mac. When I run the "start" command from the command line, here is what I get: /usr/local/zend/bin/apachectl start [OK] spawn-fcgi: child spawned successfully: PID: 4206 /usr/local/zend/bin/shell_functions.rc: line 133: 4210 Bus error $WATCHDOG -i $BINARY 1>&3 2>&4 /usr/local/zend/bin/shell_functions.rc: line 133: 4211 Bus error $WATCHDOG -u $WD_UID -g $WD_GID -s $BINARY 1>&3 2>&4 Starting Zend Server GUI [Lighttpd] [FAILED] /usr/local/zend/bin/lighttpdctl.sh: line 46: 4212 Bus error $WATCHDOG -i $BINARY Starting MySQL SUCCESS! /usr/local/zend/bin/shell_functions.rc: line 133: 4304 Bus error $WATCHDOG -i $BINARY 1>&3 2>&4 /usr/local/zend/bin/shell_functions.rc: line 133: 4425 Bus error $WATCHDOG -u $WD_UID -g $WD_GID -s $BINARY 1>&3 2>&4 Starting Java bridge [FAILED] /usr/local/zend/bin/java_bridge.sh: line 39: 4426 Bus error $WATCHDOG -i $BINARY Zend Server started... I've made sure that Web Sharing is turned off to avoid conflicts, and I've run Disk Utility from my recovery disk to make sure there are no file system errors. Here is what the lines that are referenced in the errors have in terms of code: shell_functions.rc: (starting on line 132 - the error message says line 133...): launch() { if [ -z "$DEBUG" ]; then exec 3>/dev/null 4>&3 else exec 3>&1 4>&2 fi $WATCHDOG -i $BINARY 1>&3 2>&4 RET=$? if [ $RET -eq 0 ];then $ECHO_CMD "$BINARY watchdog is up and running.. ${OK_COLOR}[OK]${T_RESET}" return $RET else #$WATCHDOG -u $WD_UID -g $WD_GID -s $BINARY >> "$PREFIX/logs/watchdog_$BINARY.log" 2>&1 $WATCHDOG -u $WD_UID -g $WD_GID -s $BINARY 1>&3 2>&4 report $? "Starting" fi } _kill() { $WATCHDOG -i $BINARY > /dev/null 2>&1 if [ $? -eq 1 ];then $ECHO_CMD "$BINARY is not running" else $WATCHDOG -t $BINARY > /dev/null 2>&1 report $? "Stopping" fi } lighttpdctl.sh: (starting on line 45 - the error message says line 46...): status() { $WATCHDOG -i $BINARY } case "$1" in start) start status ;; stop) stop ;; restart) stop sleep 1 start ;; status) status ;; *) usage exit 1 esac exit $? java_bridge.sh: (starting on line 38 - the error message says line 39...): status() { $WATCHDOG -i $BINARY } Question: "Watchdog" is library in this zend BIN folder - it seems to handle error reporting? all the errors in my start command seem to deal with this Watchdog thing, but I don't know what to do about it... Thanks!

  • How to INF mod: Replacing 32bit dlls with 64bits

    - by Nime Cloud
I've got a driver setup for 32 bit: An INF file and an x86 folder with two 32 bit dlls. I need to replace these 32 bit dll files with 64 bit ones. I just simply overwrite 32 bit files but no lock. How can I make 64 bit version of the driver? Update: I tried original setup files on 32 bit Windows XP, setup asks for WdfCoinstaller01009.dll, I just simply browse & point the file from somewhere on XP. ;-------------- WDF Coinstaller installation [DestinationDirs] CoInstaller_CopyFiles = 11 [silabser.Dev.NT.CoInstallers] AddReg=CoInstaller_AddReg CopyFiles=CoInstaller_CopyFiles [CoInstaller_CopyFiles] WdfCoinstaller01009.dll [SourceDisksFiles] WdfCoinstaller01009.dll=1 [CoInstaller_AddReg] HKR,,CoInstallers32,0x00010000, "WdfCoinstaller01009.dll,WdfCoInstaller" [silabser.Dev.NT.Wdf] KmdfService = silabser, silabser_wdfsect [silabser_wdfsect] KmdfLibraryVersion = 1.9

  • Zoneminder camera permanently idle

    - by C. Ross
I have an Ubuntu server with zoneminder installed. I only have one camera (cheap Logitech USB model) and it seems to be permanently idle. I'm also getting this error repeatedly in the logs 06/06/2010 08:26:56.563783 zmwatch[28234].INF [Restarting capture daemon for main_room, shared memory not valid] 06/06/2010 08:26:56.812964 zmwatch[28234].INF ['zmc -d /dev/video0' starting at 10/06/06 08:26:56, pid = 29214] 06/06/2010 08:27:06.814486 zmwatch[28234].INF [Restarting capture daemon for main_room, shared memory not valid] 06/06/2010 08:27:07.054854 zmwatch[28234].INF ['zmc -d /dev/video0' starting at 10/06/06 08:27:07, pid = 29219] I've already tried following the instructions in the FAQ for increasing shared memory, but that doesn't seem to work. What do I need to do to get this working?

  • Get error (Repair Filesystem) 1 # when I install 4 new Hard drives in RedHat Linux 5 on a Dell PowerEdge 2900

    - by Alos Diallo
Hi I am using a Dell PowerEdge 2900 running RedHat 5. I had 4 drives in the system using a Raid 5, I purchased and installed 4 more drives keeping the configuration the same. Set up the Vertual disks in PERC 6/i. When I exit out and reboot the system I get the following: fsck.ext3: No such file or dirrectory while trying open /dev/ddb1 [FAILED] ***An error occurred during the file system check. ***Dropping you to a shell; the system will reboot ***when you leave the shell. Then am prompted for the root pw. I enter it and am then prompted with: (Repair filesystem) 1# if I type fdisk -l I get some info on the disk along with: Disk /dev/sdb doesn't contain a valid partition table I am then prompted for (Repair filesystem) 2# If I reboot I am taken to the same screen again. The system was working before this happened. Does anyone know why this is happening and or what I can do to fix it? Thanks

  • Attempting to caue packet loss with netem doesn't work - possibly because of NAT (but delay does work)

    - by tomdee
I have traffic from a WIFI access point routed via an Ubuntu box. I have two network interfaces which are NATed *filter :INPUT ACCEPT [11:690] :FORWARD ACCEPT [0:0] :OUTPUT ACCEPT [37:6224] -A FORWARD -s 192.168.2.0/24 -i eth1 -o eth0 -m conntrack --ctstate NEW -j ACCEPT -A FORWARD -m conntrack --ctstate RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT COMMIT # Completed on Thu Mar 15 13:37:21 2012 # Generated by iptables-save v1.4.10 on Thu Mar 15 13:37:21 2012 *nat :PREROUTING ACCEPT [0:0] :INPUT ACCEPT [0:0] :OUTPUT ACCEPT [0:0] :POSTROUTING ACCEPT [0:0] -A POSTROUTING -j MASQUERADE COMMIT If I run a ping app on an Android device connected to the WIFI network I can happily ping google. If I use netem to introduce some delay tc qdisc change dev eth0 root netem delay 100ms I can clearly see pings taking longer. If I use netem to introduce some packet loss tc qdisc change dev ifb0 root netem loss 50% then I see no change. Packet loss does work fine for locally generated traffic, just not for traffic coming in over the network that's being NATed. Any ideas how to sort this out?

  • Unable to burn Windows ISO from Fedora

    - by user331947
First of all, English is not my native tongue, so apologies for any mistakes. My computer recently started prompting that it can't launch Windows successfully. So I just choose start Windows normally. Then, I found that the startup freezes at the Windows screen (before the login prompt). I have tried rebooting several times and get the same results. So I just gave up. After few days, I tried to boot up my laptop again. This time it got to the desktop, but it's extremely slow and the icons on my Desktop don't show up. I decided to format the Windows partition and reinstall a new one. (It is usually faster that way since I kept my 400GB+ data on aother partition and programs and the rest in the same partition as Windows). The thing is I get the Windows disc at the moment (Traveling aboard). But I have a Windows 7 disc image on my hard disk. So, I downloaded Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, made a Live USB, and then try to burn the image from Ubuntu. But the program just freezes and I don't know why. I tried several times and it's still the same. So I tried using Fedora instead, just to see if it will work. The Disk Image Writer report something like this. Error unmounting /dev/dm-0: Command-line `umount "/dev/dm-0"' exited with non-zero exit status 32: umount: /: target is busy (In some cases useful info about processes that use the device is found by lsof(8) or fuser(1).) (udisks-error-quark, 14) Also, I tried installing linux on the windows partition. The installation program freezes (both Ubuntu and Fedora). So, I thought that maybe something are wrong with my hard disk. I seek the solution on the internet and found that gparted can be used to format a partition. And it also froze at "Searching /dev/sda/ partition ...". I'm using Lenovo Y570. Spec below. http://www.notebookreview.com/notebookreview/lenovo-ideapad-y570-review-a-lenovo-bestseller/3/ Can anyone suggest a next step in diagnosing and fixing this problem? Thanks in advance.
