  • Your experience on using configuration & VCS tools

    I am doing my study's final year project and would like to do a little survey here. The topic is about configuration management and version control system for an industrial product (such as a piece of software, a furniture design, a car engine or even an aeroplane design etc...) 1.) What is you field of expertise (IT, engineering, manufactuing etc..) and what is the configuration management and version control system you use (previously or now) for your work? 2.) What is your opinion/comment (good, bad, what is it lack of or what can be improve etc...) about them? Much appreciated if you can include some real life examples for your opinion/comment. Of course you are welcome also if you simply wish to share your thought on the current configuration management and version control system in market. Thanks all in advance for your help.

  • Learning MVC - Maintaining model state

    First of all, I'm very new to MVC. Bought the books, but not got the T-Shirt yet. I've put together my first little application, but I'm looking at the way I'm maintaining my model and I don't think it looks right. My form contains the following: <% using (Html.BeginForm("Reconfigured", null, FormMethod.Post, new { id = "configurationForm" })) { %> <%= Html.DropDownList("selectedCompany", new SelectList(Model.Companies, Model.SelectedCompany), new { onchange = "$('#configurationForm').submit()" })%> <%= Html.DropDownList("selectedDepartment", new SelectList(Model.Departments, Model.SelectedDepartment), new { onchange = "$('#configurationForm').submit()" })%> <%=Html.TextArea("comment", Model.Comment) %> <%} %> My controller has the following: public ActionResult Index(string company, string department, string comment) { TestModel form = new TestModel(); form.Departments = _someRepository.GetList(); form.Companies = _someRepository.GetList(); form.Comment = comment; form.SelectedCompany = company; form.SelectedDepartment = department; return View(form); } [HttpPost] public ActionResult Reconfigured(string selectedCompany, string selectedDepartment, string comment) { return RedirectToAction("Index", new { company = selectedCompany, department = selectedDepartment, comment = comment}); } And finally, this is my route: routes.MapRoute( "Default", "{controller}/{company}/{department}", new { controller = "CompanyController", action = "Index", company="", department="" } ); Now, every time I change DropDownList value, all my values are maintained. I end up with a URL like the following after the Reconfigure action is called: http://localhost/Main/Index/Company/Sales?comment=Foo%20Bar Ideally I'd like the URL to remain as: http://localhost/Main/Index My routing object is probably wrong. This can't be the right way? It seems totally wrong to me as for each extra field I add, I have to add the property into the Index() method? I had a look at this answer where the form is passed through TempData. This is obviously an improvement, but it's not strongly typed? Is there a way to do something similar but have it strongly typed? This may be a simple-enough question, but the curse of 10 years of WinForms/WebForms makes this MVC malarky hard to get your head 'round.

  • Need some ignition for learning Embedded Systems

    I'm very much interested in building applications for Embedded Devices. I'm in my 3rd year Electrical Engineering and I'm passionate about coding, algorithms, Linux OS, etc. And also by Googling I found out that Linux OS is one of the best OSes for Embedded devices(may be/may not be). I want to work for companies which work on mobile applications. I'm a newbie/naive to this domain & my skills include C/C++ & MySQL. I need help to get started in the domain of Embedded Systems; like how/where to start off, Hardware prerequisites, necessary programming skills, also what kind of Embedded Applications etc. I've heard of ARM, firmware, PIC Micorcontrollers; but I don't know anything & just need proper introduction about them. Thanx. P.S: I'm currently reading Bjarne Struotsup's lecture in C++ at Texas A&M University, and one chapter in it describes about Embedded Systems Programming.

  • (fluxus) learning curve

    I'm trying to have some fun with fluxus, but its manual and online docs all seem to assume that the reader is already an expert network programmer who's never heard of Scheme before. Consequently, you get passages that try to explain the very basics of prefix notation, but assume that you know how to pipe sound-card data into the program, or setup and connect to an OSC process. Is there any tutorial out there that goes the opposite way? IE, assumes that you already have a handle on the Lisp/Scheme thing, but need some pointers before you can properly set up sound sources or an OSC server? Barring that, does anyone know how to get (for example) the system microphone to connect to (fluxus), or how to get it to play a sound file from disk?

    I've been involved in some interviews at work recently, and having seen a few CVs, I've been thinking of my own. I wonder how I might rate my proficiency at the various technologies I've worked with on some sort of simple scale: Beginner, Intermediate, Expert. I've been doing C# for a few years now, but I'd hesitate to call myself "expert" particularly (partly because surely I haven't been doing it long enough, and partly because I can't bring myself to be so bold as to say I'm expert at anything). I think I probably was expert at VB back when I got into programming, but any VB skills I had will have deteriorated by now. Of course I wouldn't even bother listing things on my CV that I'd consider myself to be "beginner" at, I'd just add them to the "other tech" category, but I'd be interested to hear tips on helping me decide.

I'm not put off by the complicated syntax, but where in "traditional commercial programming" would I find places it would make sense to use it instead of a procedural language. Is there a commercial killer-app out there that's been written in Lisp ?

    UPDATE: looks like I've misunderstood what TempData is for and what it isn't. It definitively shouldn't be used to "keep certain session-wide data" as I asked initially (see ASP.NET MVC TempData Is Really RedirectData why). I've modified the question accordingly. Has anyone used CookieTempDataProvider for TempData storage? Are there any caveats to watch out for (apart from keeping the session storage small)? Any issues with using it on Web farms?

    I found a tutorial with people saying it works; here are the instructions I followed. I opened a shell as root on my system and launched the following: wget http://linuxtv.org/hg/v4l-dvb/archive/tip.tar.gz tar zxvf tip.tar.gz cd v4l... (whatever the newly created directory name is) make all sudo make install Then I edited /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-custom and added blacklist sn9c102. After reboot, I launched sudo gstreamer-properties. However when I type tar zxvf tip.tar.gz it displays: tar: You may not specify more than one `-Acdtrux' or `--test-label' option Try `tar --help' or `tar --usage' for more information. Why? How can I do this? Thanks in advance.

  • Microsoft Async CTP for DDD9 UK Developer Conference - slides and source code now available

    Thanks to all the nice comments from people who attended my presentation at DDD9, and extra thanks to Jon Skeet, Mark Rendle and Mike Hadlow for coming on stage for the last ten minutes to help debate whether the Async CTP is the correct way to go to enhance C# 5.0. The presentation is available at Prezi.com http://prezi.com/gysz5nohltye, which I can recommend as a refreshing change to the more standard PowerPoint slidedecks. I've also uploaded all the code samples into a single ZIP file. You will need to install the Async CTP to be able to run them, and I would remind everyone that the current Async CTP is not compatible with either ASP.NET MVC 3 RTM or Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1 so you may need to use a test system of virtual machine to play with it!
