  • Your experience on using configuration & VCS tools

    I am doing my study's final year project and would like to do a little survey here. The topic is about configuration management and version control system for an industrial product (such as a piece of software, a furniture design, a car engine or even an aeroplane design etc...) 1.) What is you field of expertise (IT, engineering, manufactuing etc..) and what is the configuration management and version control system you use (previously or now) for your work? 2.) What is your opinion/comment (good, bad, what is it lack of or what can be improve etc...) about them? Much appreciated if you can include some real life examples for your opinion/comment. Of course you are welcome also if you simply wish to share your thought on the current configuration management and version control system in market. Thanks all in advance for your help.

    This is my first blog post for new year 2011 and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the readers for making my blog very successful and accepting me a community member. As year 2010 has lots of up down in IT filed it was recession period and now we almost recovered from it. Personally year 2010 has been very successful to me as I have been awarded as Microsoft Most Valuable Professional for visual C#. And It was one of the greatest achievement of my life. I would like to take this opportunity to thanks Microsoft for this and thanks all friends specially Jacob Sebastian who has given me guidance any time I required it. I have been also awarded dzone most valuable blogger this year and it was a nice surprise from dzone. I would like thanks dzone for this. Once again I am wishing you happy new year and may this year will bring success to all of you. One more thing I have found that I have met lots of people who is quite intelligent and exceptional developers and IT professionals but they are not blogging their stuff. I would say please my blog post a why a developer should write blog and Start blogging immediately because unless and until you don’t blog community will not know what you are doing.  Till then happy blogging and programming ...   • (fluxus) learning curve

    I'm trying to have some fun with fluxus, but its manual and online docs all seem to assume that the reader is already an expert network programmer who's never heard of Scheme before. Consequently, you get passages that try to explain the very basics of prefix notation, but assume that you know how to pipe sound-card data into the program, or setup and connect to an OSC process. Is there any tutorial out there that goes the opposite way? IE, assumes that you already have a handle on the Lisp/Scheme thing, but need some pointers before you can properly set up sound sources or an OSC server? Barring that, does anyone know how to get (for example) the system microphone to connect to (fluxus), or how to get it to play a sound file from disk?

  • Developer Curriculum Vitae - "Experience"

    I've been involved in some interviews at work recently, and having seen a few CVs, I've been thinking of my own. I wonder how I might rate my proficiency at the various technologies I've worked with on some sort of simple scale: Beginner, Intermediate, Expert. I've been doing C# for a few years now, but I'd hesitate to call myself "expert" particularly (partly because surely I haven't been doing it long enough, and partly because I can't bring myself to be so bold as to say I'm expert at anything). I think I probably was expert at VB back when I got into programming, but any VB skills I had will have deteriorated by now. Of course I wouldn't even bother listing things on my CV that I'd consider myself to be "beginner" at, I'd just add them to the "other tech" category, but I'd be interested to hear tips on helping me decide.

I'm not put off by the complicated syntax, but where in "traditional commercial programming" would I find places it would make sense to use it instead of a procedural language. Is there a commercial killer-app out there that's been written in Lisp ?

    UPDATE: looks like I've misunderstood what TempData is for and what it isn't. It definitively shouldn't be used to "keep certain session-wide data" as I asked initially (see ASP.NET MVC TempData Is Really RedirectData why). I've modified the question accordingly. Has anyone used CookieTempDataProvider for TempData storage? Are there any caveats to watch out for (apart from keeping the session storage small)? Any issues with using it on Web farms?

    I found a tutorial with people saying it works; here are the instructions I followed. I opened a shell as root on my system and launched the following: wget http://linuxtv.org/hg/v4l-dvb/archive/tip.tar.gz tar zxvf tip.tar.gz cd v4l... (whatever the newly created directory name is) make all sudo make install Then I edited /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-custom and added blacklist sn9c102. After reboot, I launched sudo gstreamer-properties. However when I type tar zxvf tip.tar.gz it displays: tar: You may not specify more than one `-Acdtrux' or `--test-label' option Try `tar --help' or `tar --usage' for more information. Why? How can I do this? Thanks in advance.

  • Microsoft Async CTP for DDD9 UK Developer Conference - slides and source code now available

    Thanks to all the nice comments from people who attended my presentation at DDD9, and extra thanks to Jon Skeet, Mark Rendle and Mike Hadlow for coming on stage for the last ten minutes to help debate whether the Async CTP is the correct way to go to enhance C# 5.0. The presentation is available at Prezi.com http://prezi.com/gysz5nohltye, which I can recommend as a refreshing change to the more standard PowerPoint slidedecks. I've also uploaded all the code samples into a single ZIP file. You will need to install the Async CTP to be able to run them, and I would remind everyone that the current Async CTP is not compatible with either ASP.NET MVC 3 RTM or Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1 so you may need to use a test system of virtual machine to play with it!
