• Offloading Cable Modem operations to Router

  I may be crazy here, but I seem to recall a conversation in the past stating that it was possible to offload some of the operations taken by one's cable modem to one's router. The logic was that since the cable modem is often equipped with a cheaper processor as it is supplied by your provider, that it often chokes even crashes when you start a torrent or something else with a lot of connections. I seem to recall that some routers offered the ability to take some of the modem's operations. Is this possible or have I imagined the whole thing? I ask because my modem seems to have many issues when I start torrents.

• Setting Up an IP Camera in ZoneMinder from Ubuntu

  I recently bought a TV-IP312W wireless IP camera. I've completed the basic setup on the camera itself, and confirmed I can stream video using the utility CamViewer. Now I'm trying to access the camera from ZoneMinder, so I can setup monitors and alerts. However, I'm finding the documentation a bit laking. Following the tutorial and a forum post, I've install ZoneMinder, and can access the web interface, but I'm getting stuck at the "Check that your Camera Works!" section. I can add a monitor, but after I add the configuration: Source Type: FFMPEG Source Path: http://192.168.1.105/cgi/mjpg/mjpeg.cgi?.mjpeg all I get is a broken image. What am I doing wrong?

• MacBook not connecting anywhere via VPN

  I was wondering if someone could help me troubleshoot this issue. I have a handful of VPNs set up on my MacBook (Snow Leopard) which I know are working, but today when I tried to use them I get the following error in all cases: could not find the PPP kernel extension I have not needed to use any VPN for a while but they have worked in the past and there is nothing I can think of that I have changed on this machine. I have looked in System/Library/Extensions and PPP.kext is there which is the file I thought it would be looking for? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Building a Social Networking website, should I have separate servers for certain parts of the site? [closed]

  I have been working on building a social networking website, I'm pretty committed to this and I think I have something that could work out. I hope to be launching it January 1st, and so I have a question for server setup and such. Facebook has separate domain names/servers for their photos (and I don't know what else), so I would assume that by doing this it would help spread the server loads out. So I am wondering if it would make a very big difference in speed if I had my main server for basically everything, but had another server and such that the photos would be stored on and access them the same way that facebook does.

• Backup hardware and strategy on distributed Windows Server 2008 network

  This question is a follow up to this. We have a Windows Server 2008 R2 domain over a network that spans two different buildings, linked by a 100-Mbps point-to-point line. Over 60 users work in the organisation. We are planning to use DFS folders and DFS replication for file serving across the organisation. The estimated data volume is over 2 TB, and will grow at approximately 20% annually. The idea is to set up a DFS file server in each building and use DFS so that all the contents stay replicated over the 100-Mbps link. We are now considering backup hardware and strategies. We are Dell customers and, after browsing the online Dell catalogue, I can see a number of backup hardware options. My main doubts are the following: Would you go for a tape library, disk backup, or are there other options worth considering? Would you perform batch backups (i.e. nightly) or would you use continuous backup (i.e. while users are working)? Would you use a dedicated backup server to which the tape library (or any other backup device) is attached, or is there any other alternative way of doing things? My experience with backup hardware and overall setup is limited, so I appreciate any good piece of advice that you may have. Thanks.

• Network Load Balancing, intermittent port problem

  Trying to troubleshoot an intermittent problem. I think it might be related to an NLB issue. We are using Windows Network Load Balancing to balance load for our multiserver SharePoint front ends. Say... Web Front End 1 IP is 192.168.1.100 and Web Front End 2 IP is 192.168.1.101, the NLB is setup to load balance both WFE servers on any incoming traffic to the IP 192.168.1.200. Sometimes we got an intermittent issue where when we try to access the SharePoint site using 192.168.1.200:8080 (say the site is set up to run on port 8080) from a remote client, it will display page not found. Pinging the 192.168.1.200 will give responses, but when trying to telnet to 192.168.1.200:8080 it just won't connect. However, browsing the SharePoint site directly on individual WFE (192.168.1.100 and 192.168.1.101) show no problem whatsoever. My guess also (we didn't get a chance to try it yet, but I think it should work), if I try connecting remotely to individual server, it will respond just fine. But any attempt on trying to connect using the virtual IP (192.168.1.200) will fail miserably. Funny thing is, after a while it will return back to normal. Anyone had similar experience with this type of problem while implementing NLB before? We are doing this in a virtual environment.

• Enabling the log app on the WDTV

  Just flashed the last WDXLTV firmware on my WDTV and it's working fine. I tried to config a Wifi USB adapter but couldn't get it to work. Dropped the log-saver.app.bin on the root of the stick but didn't find any log files after booting. What I'm doing is turning on the WDTV with the stick inserted (the stick is formatted with FAT32). Tried with the wireless-mod.app.bin required files and without any other file than the log saver. I can't get a log file anyway. All I want right now is to get the log file so I can debug the WI FI adapter.

• SNMP counter issues with cisco RV082

  Does anyone else poll this router with SNMP? We are using firmware version: 2.0.0.19-tz We are having problems with the traffic counters, some of them appear to be implemented as 16 bit counter instead of 32 bit counters. The reason this is causing problems is that they roll over (at 65,000) to 0 in less than our minute polling cycle, really skewing our metrics. The counter for the Lan (interface 2) seems to be functioning properly, however interfaces 3 and 4 (WAN and DMZ / WAN2) rollover at 65000.   Hello, I have never set up and configured a VPN. I was wondering what it takes to set one up across windows server 2008 servers. What is the complexity involved? How complicated is it to configure? Do I need to set up a Domain controller as a pre-requisite? I am asking because it appears SQL Server 2008 merge replication can only be set up over the internet using VPN and I am trying to gauge what I am up against. Thanks a lot.

• Macs don't connect to wifi access point but PCs will

  So, as a side project I'm going to try and figure out why the wifi APs in my building exhibit the following behavior: - They typically allow all types of computers to connect without issues - Sometimes Apples can't get an IP address but will still connect to the AP's signal - Less often, PCs can't connect to the wifi (same as above - yes signal, no IP addy) - Don't let Raiders fans on no matter the time of day! My first thought was that the DHCP leases were all taken up when the Apples would try to connect, and it was just their unlucky timing, but I would then try to log on with a PC that had a new, unleased MAC address and it would work... Could this be something to do with interoperability between an apple wifi card, and the APs? Different parts of the DHCP lease being taken up first? The fact that the Seattle Mariners might actually be good this year?? If this hasn't used up everyone's patience (with my crappy sports jokes), something else I could use some help with: - We don't have the model or type of AP - This is because there is no documentation available for them, and they literally look like small white boxes with no writing on them. Also, the company that installed them is out of business, so the situation might be that no docs will ever be on the way. -- Do you guys have any ideas on how to figure out what we have?   I have worked a few different places, each one with a different solution, so I would like to hear your suggestions and ideas. I am looking at a situation with multiple server-rooms. We have a mixture of copper (both ethernet and telephone), multi-mode fibre and single-mode fibre. We have all types of connectors: RJ-11, RJ-45, LC, SC, FC, SMA and several I probably forgot about. We have a lot of people working in the area, and keeping track of cables is turning into a full time job. So, here are a the questions: What types and lengths of cable do you keep in stock on site? Do you make your own or buy pre-made? Adapters? Dampeners? How do you manage cable inventory? How do you label the cables? Any other tricks to stop this from driving me crazy?

• Cisco ASA 5505 and slow download speeds for Apple devices

  For traffic routing through my ASA 5505, downloads for all Apple devices, including AppleTV iPad gen 1 IMac MacBook Pro are very slow. speedof.me show less than 1 Mbps download (where I should have 20 Mbps +), yet for any Windows-based device, the download speeds are in excess of 20 Mbps. The Windows device, including the iMac and MacBook Pro machines, are connected via ethernet cable. Why are Apple devices experiencing such pain? Is it an ASA setting, or something else? Thanks.

I want to use a Puppet to configure them and next try to setup OpenStack. I am not sure If I am understanding how this should look at the end.   I'm looking for consumer router / firmware recommendations with reasonably robust remote URL / hostname logging & reporting functionality. Most logging functionality I've seen is terrible - reporting only IP addresses, not rolling up reports or reporting any useful statistics. The logs are also often limited to merely the last few minutes/hours when handling high-traffic loads. Bonus points for providing a screenshot of the log reporting interface!

• How To Perform Distributed Website Monitoring?

  I would like to know how sites like the following perform distributed website monitoring (from multiple checkpoints/countries). pingdom.com, site24x7.com, uptrends.com, siteuptime.com, etc, etc. To be exact, what process would occur in checking if a given domain name went down? If the server finds that the site is down, what is the next step? Would it make a REST API request to a separate server to run the same test and report the results? I have a few theories, including: utilizing host(s) from different countries utilizing proxies from different countries I'm looking for the most proper or correct way to handle this, which can include the usage of servers from multiple countries/hosts.
