    Hi, I'm working on an open source project that will manage active directory users. I am looking for feedback from Windows/Active Directory Admins on the formats of usernames they prefer or their organization uses. I want to make sure the software allows admins to use the most popular formats when new users are created. Here is the list I have so far: 1. <firstname><lastname> 2. <lastname><firstname> 3. <lastname><firstinitial> 4. <lastname><firstinitial><middleinitial> 5. <firstinitial><lastname> 6. <firstinitial><middleinitial><lastname> 7. <firstname><lastinitial> In addition how do you handle multiple identical names? So if two John Smith's exist do you append a numeric number, or interject a middle initial or name to solve the problem? Thanks for the feedback

  • Wireshark vs Netmon for precise time tagging

    I'm using Wireshark to time tag and get some statistics on multicast traffic. When there is not much traffic, the stats looks good, but as soon as there is a bunch of packets arriving at the same time, I have stats that are not even possible (e.g. round trip time of 0ms) I'm wondering if Netmon could be more precise in time tagging packet because it is not relying on the Winpcap driver? How to migrate all LDAP user base at ou=People,dc=company,dc=com to samba 4 AD domain? I don't need to assistance transferring everything, I only need to transfer user accounts. I've finished migrating them all but user/passwords. Can it be done? If so, how?

  • How can one machine ping another, but the reverse ping doesn't work

    I've got two VMware Workstation virtual machines running ... Virtual A can ping the host laptop most of the time, other real machines on my home network all of the time, but it gets a "request timed out" for virtual B Virtual B can ping the host laptop most of the time, and the machines, both real and virtual A all of the time The only difference I know of is virtual B has been joined to my works domain, whereas virtual A is still in workgroup mode Can anyone explain how / why this is occurring ?

    Two question regarding sudo-login into an ubuntu-system (debian tips welcome as well): Is it possible to require sudoers on my box to only login with publickey-authentication? Is it possible to log which ip sudoers log in from and check that for "unusual activity" or take actions? I'm thinking about temporarily removing sudo-rights if sudoers don't log in from whitelisted IPs. Or is that too risky to be exploited?

  • Streamline Active Directory account creation via automated web site

    In my company we have high employee turnover, and hence our helpdesk receives about a dozen requests per week for new Active Directory accounts. Currently, we receive these requests simply via e-mail or voice-mail, and rarely do we have all of the information necessary to create the account. I would like to find a web application that can be used by a manager or supervisor to formalize the requests they make for AD accounts for new employees under their command. Ideally, the application would prompt for all of necessary information, and allow the helpdesk to review the requests and approve or deny each one. If approved, the application would take care of creating the account and send an e-mail to the manager. I have found several application on the Internet that handle self-service account management (i.e., password resets or update contact info), which is also nice to have, but nothing that streamlines the new account request and creation part. Can anyone make suggestions on such an application? Thanks.

  • prevent use of 'net user' command to change passwords on windows vista / xp

    hello the point is, if i'm logged in (and as almost every windows user, i've got an admin-account), and someone comes across my not locked pc, it is possible to change my password the pro-way through using: net user Admin %NEW_PASSWD% what can i do to prevent that, besides not being logged in as admin. i once saw a way, where the 'net user' command was substituted by a .bat file. so if you call 'net user Admin ...', it runs this .bat-file instead, which locks the notebook immediately. problem is, i honestly don't know how i could let windows substitute eg net.exe with a .bat-file. (too little windows knowledge) do you know any way how to do it? i'd appreciate it.

  • Python to see if a file falls into a date range

    I have a script that I want to have an if statement check if a file falls between several specified date periods as it searches directories. I have been able to get the time in %Y-%m-%d format for the file, but I can't seem to be able to specify a date range for python to go through. Any ideas/help?   • NTP daemon or ntpdate doesn't synchronize

    I'm having some problems with synchronization with an NTP server. 1) The NTP daemon doesn't sync the system clock at all, even though it's running (confirmed with /etc/init.d/ntp status).   • MySQL based authentication with crypt()ed password fails in Apache 2.2

    I'm trying to set up a simple CalDAV/CardDAV server with a Radicale backend and an Apache 2.2 frontend. So far, it's all nice and simple, but I can't get the MySQL based authentication to work. I'd like to authenticate users against an existing MySQL database, and I need the REMOTE_USER variable to be set (pretty much like in the configuration examples for Radicale). I've tried mod_auth_mysql, which authenticated the users nicely, but failed to set the REMOTE_USER variable. The newer alternative seems to be mod_authn_dbd, which doesn't seem to like the crypted passwords in the MySQL database. According to the documentation, crypted passwords should work, so maybe I'm just missing a simple parameter. The configuration looks like this: DBDriver mysql DBDParams "sock=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock dbname=myAuthDB user=myAuthUser pass=myAuthPW <Directory /> AllowOverride None Order allow,deny allow from all AuthName 'CalDav' AuthType Basic AuthBasicProvider dbd require valid-user AuthDBDUserPWQuery "SELECT crypt FROM myAuthTable WHERE id=%s" </Directory> I've tested the query, it works fine. And as mentioned before, mod_auth_mysql worked nicely against the same database, but didn't set the required variables. Am I just missing some configuration parameter? Or is mod_authn_dbd just not the right tool to achieve what I want?

    I'm currently generating documentation on one machine, and publishing it to a web server using the following commands in a script: net use "\\someShare" PASSWORD /user:username del /S /Q "\\someShare" xcopy /E /Y Documentation\html\* "\\someShare\" However, it feels like a really bad idea to have a password as plain text in the script, so I'm looking for alternatives to my current solution. Ideas? I definitely would appreciate a solution that uses some kind of access control, as many different people should be allowed to publish their own documentation to the web server, but not mess with each other's docs.

    I have a situation where I need to have PuTTY (or another SSH client for Windows) automatically log into another machine via SSH. I realize that this isn't a good idea security-wise, but unfortunately I'm constrained by the limitations both on the client and the server. The best solution would be to have a shortcut or script on the desktop that, when double clicked, will connect to the server and automatically log in. Can I do this with PuTTY? I am willing to explore public key authentication, but I'm not sure where the PuTTY key resides or how to copy it to the server, as the app starts automatically upon login.

    I have a Windows share mounted on a Linux server (RHEL4) using a mount command like this: mount -t smbfs //server_ip/foldername /servername/foldername -o username=USERNAME,password=PASSWORD -o gid=users,dmask=777,fmask=777,rw,noatime It stays working for weeks at a time but sometimes stops working, at which time I unmount it and mount it again. This works but the share would have been unavailable for some time before I noticed it in log files. Is there some way that the share can be automatically remounted when it fails?

  • How to stretch the image from one screen to two screens

    I want to be able to stretch the image from one monitor to a second monitor even if i have to use some software to do it. For example i want the top half of the image that is now shown on my first monitor to occupy the whole second monitor and i want the bottom half to occupy the whole first monitor, or the other way around i don't really care as long as it works. I would be cool to know how to do the same stuff but to the left half and right half. I know that image pixels would have twice the lenght or height this way but i don't really care about it as long as it works so basically i want the stuff to show on both monitors but with the same pixels as before. I have a hd4870 and windows7 and hd4000 family doesnt support having two monitors behaving like a large one, only hd5000 upwards, this would solve my problems without any of the drawbacks but it just can't be done (or maybe it can via software but i'm just too tired of searching). A solution to make almost any graphic card have two monitors behaving like a large one is matrox dualhead2go but that's just as expensive as a good hd5000 card so it's not worth it. thanks in advance EDIT I guess that nobody so far was able to fully comprehend my problem that was very explicitly written but i will elaborate some more. My hd4870 can have 2 monitors working with it but some stuff like games won't run on both monitors, which sucks. There are some ways to circumvent this problem and two of them are perfect or almost perfect but expensive and the third would be a software solution that would make it possible. The first one is to have and hd5000 family video card which will work just fine with both monitors. The second is to have a matrox dualhead2go that will make my hd4870 detect my two monitors as a large monitor. The third is to have a software that makes my two displays be detected as a large display and then captures the output of the video card, splits the images and renders them as 2d images to both monitors OR a simpler one but that would make outputted pixels double the width or height would be to capture the output of the graphics card to one screen, split it in two and enlarge it to fit both monitors and then output it to the monitors. p.s. By capturing the output of the video card i mean just make the video card process the stuff in a certain way. Making the video card detect two monitors as a large one via software may be a bit impossible or impracticable but stretching the output as a 2d image from one to both monitors for some coders should be a walk in the park so it would be likely that such program would exist or that some widespread softwares for dual monitor would have such function in them.

  • netbook intel GMA 3150 external monitor 1920x1080 flicker problem

    Dear all, i recently purchased a acer netbook (apsire one d260). It runs flawlessly. Yesterday I bought a samsung 23" TFT with a native resolution of 1920x1080. According to the information found in the internet and my local computer dealer, the intel chipset can handle the native resolution of the monitor. However, this is only partly the case. I use the VGA cabel to connect, the monitor instantly switches to the native resolution and now the problem: Occasionaly, especially the first 2 hours after booting up, I have a flickering all over the screen, sometimes the entire screen is shaking and spinning around like crazy. I figured out, that lowering the resolution avoids the flicker but this helps only for some time. I can rule out that it's the monitor's problem since I found no issues with another notebook. Right now, I have no problems with the netbook, for about 30 minutes I didn't experience any issues... But I don't know for how long, it occurs without warning :-) I'm worried that if I would bring the netbook back to the dealer and explain my problem, after testing it on an external screen in the local shop, everything works just fine... And I won't get helped with the problem because I can't prove it. (I'm currently in Thailand and over here, customer service is nothing like back home in Germany) What can I do? Is this a driver related issue? (I installed the latest GPU driver) Is it because of the VGA cable? (But why does it work sometimes without any problems and with no issues on the other notebook) I monitored the GPU/CPU temperature, nothing changes really over time..Can it simply be a faulty GPU and is a replacement justifiable? I'm really stressed now because for the time I'm writing, the flickering didn't occur...but for sure, soon or later it will happen again.. I Forgot to mention, the problem also happens if the netbook runs on battery, unplugged. So the only hardware that is plugged is the TFT screen. ...........and here it comes again, flickering has just begun. NEED HELP! What is best practice out there to sync time for all windows and unix boxes to sync with time server or domain controller. Windows time service is not made for high accuracy less then 10 secs.     Hi there I got a linux server that has several dozen users. I also have the cleartext password for every user (i know - bad security). I would like to know if the passwords are correct. Since the users are all ftp users and have the nologin shell, I cannot just write a script to check if login works. How can I do a local check on passwords?   • Password protect app in jetty

    I am testing a webapp (.war) running in Jetty 7. For demo purposes I want to run this on a public URL, however I would like not to have the whole world (if they happen to come across the URL) be able to see it. Is there a way to make Jetty require a basic-auth type of authentication when accessing the webapp (without modifying anything inside the war, i.e. no edits on the web.xml file)? Or if not the webapp, then any part of what Jetty provides at port 8080?

  • Store system passwords with easy and secure access

    I'm having to handle several VPS/services and I always set passwords to be different and random. What kind of storage do you suggest to keep these passwords safe and let me access them easily? These passwords are used for services like databases, webserver user and so on that run customers' services, so it's really important to keep them in a safe place and strong. I'm actually storing them in a google drive spreadsheet file, describing user, password, role, service. Do you know of better solutions? I'd like to keep them on a remote service to make sure I don't have to make backup copies (in case my hdd would fail somehow). I do work on *nix platforms (so windows specific solutions are not a choice here).
