• Distributed sequence number generation?

  I've generally implemented sequence number generation using database sequences in the past. e.g. Using Postgres SERIAL type http://neilconway.org/docs/sequences/ I'm curious though as how to generate sequence numbers for large distributed systems where there is no database. Does anybody have any experience or suggestions of a best practice for achieving sequence number generation in a thread safe manner for multiple clients?

• For loop from assembly to C

  I have a bomb project where I need to defuse certain phases by finding "pas phrases" that will defuse the bomb. Right now I have been working with phase_2, for which the assembly code is shown below. Phase_2 requires as an input 6 numbers, which I need to find in order to defuse this phase. I analyzed this assembly, and I came up with the C code below, that covers lines from 40101c to 401044. It is basically a for loop that makes sure that elements t[0]==t[3], t[1]==t[4] and t[2]==t[5] that the user inputs, are equal. According to my logic, the user can input any 6 numbers as long as the above condition is satisfied. Say 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3 would be a valid "pas phrase". However this solution does not convince me for some reason. • What does the question mark at then end of a css file mean/do?

  I've noticed that on some websites (including SO) the link to the CSS will look like: <link rel="stylesheet" href="http://sstatic.net/so/all.css?v=6638"> I would say its safe to assume that ?v=6638 tells the browser to load version 6638 of the css file. But can I do this on my websites and can I include different versions of my CSS file just by changing the numbers?

• Weird Objective-C Mod Behavior

  So I thought that negative numbers, when mod'ed should be put into positive space... I cant get this to happen in objective-c I expect this: -1 % 3 = 2 0 % 3 = 0 1 % 3 = 1 2 % 3 = 2 But get this -1 % 3 = -1 0 % 3 = 0 1 % 3 = 1 2 % 3 = 2 Why is this and is there a workaround?

  I was browsing around and found this blog post: http://erikej.blogspot.com/2010/04/version-3-of-exportsqlce-now-available.html (It is for a great add in if you user SQL Server CE.) On that post I saw an screen shot of SSMS with images in the results. How is this done? I have images in my database (PNG files that are serialized via memory stream), but I just see numbers when I select the image column.

The Culture settings don't seem to do this and I am just currently doing this String.Format(new CultureInfo("en-IN"), "{0:C0}", Price) But for very long numbers I would prefer the word format. I guess the most important, is there ANY (real-world) use for this at all? As the example given above leaks and is admittedly contrived. By the way, what the function foo(a,b) does is, to return a struct containing two numbers, the sum of all numbers from 1 to a and the product of a and b. EDIT: Maybe the line new T could use a boost::shared_ptr somehow to avoid leaks, but I haven't tried that. Would that work?

  When writing up a codebehind in Visual Studio for ASP.NET web forms applications, I often use the dropdowns at the top of the window to autogenerate page event handlers (e.g. Page_Load, Page_PreRender). I've noticed that sometimes Visual Studio likes to add numbers to these function names like "Page_Load1" or "Page_PreRender2". Programatically speaking, this has no effect on the code. But stylistically, I find it a bit ugly. Is there any way to get rid of this behavior?

  I need to come up with an algorithm that does the following: Lets say you have an array of positive numbers (e.g. [1,3,7,0,0,9]) and you know beforehand their sum is 20. You want to abstract some average amount from each number such that the new sum would be less by 7. To do so, you must follow these rules: you can only subtract integers the resulting array must not have any negative values you can not make any changes to the indices of the buckets. The more uniformly the subtraction is distributed over the array the better.
