• Dell 4600 Driver for Audio Card Windows 7

  I just installed windows 7 on dell 4600 desktop. the Audio card is a Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 2. I've look all over, and I can't find a driver for windows 7. I've also looked at Vista Drivers. It seems Dell is not supporting Windows 7 with this computer. I've got a work around, but would like a driver if possible. Any help would be appreciated.

• Function keys require Fn modifer. How can I make them default?

  On my Dell Studio 15, the function keys, by default, do things like switch the radio on/off or change the brightness or sound. To use them as function keys I have to hold down the Fn modifier. I use function keys as function keys a lot more often than I want to change the volume or brightness. Am I missing an obvious setting somewhere in the control panel (Vista Uber Extreme Something)?

  I have two primary audio outputs on my machine: The speakers and a USB headset. Currently, in Windows 7 Professional x64, I type "sound" in the Start search menu to open up this dialog: I only care about the top two options for the purposes of this question. I would like to know if there's a way in AutoHotKey to switch from "Speakers (4- Sennheiser USB Headset)" to "Speakers (VIA High Definition Audio)" so I can avoid having to open this dialog every time I wish to switch. • Strange Ubuntu linux boot behaviour

  I've recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 on a desktop machine as the only OS. If put in a hibernate, it wakes up normally, but if turned of completely, after turning on there is no "beep" sound from BIOS and HD lamp blinks for a while then stops. When I hit reset in that state, it bots normally. What is going on and how could I fix it?

  If I have a text file in Unix that contains N-many independent entries (e.g. records about employees, where each employee has a separate record), is it expected that this file will take up less space than if I split the file into N files, each containing the entry for one employee? in other words, can one save significant space on unix file systems by concatenating many files together, or is the difference negligible? thanks.

• Make Emacs status bar draggable anywhere?

  In Emacs, if I split the frame (C-x 2), each window has a status bar. Historically, I could drag the status bar to resize them. Unfortunately, with Emacs these days and just a few modes (for version control, line/col number, abbrevs, my programming language, etc.), pretty much the entire bar has remapped mouse-1 to something other than letting me drag the bar! Is there any way to turn the status bar back into something I can drag, without losing all of my modes?

• long access times and errors in iis application

  Hi, I am having an issue with an IIS application (details of environment at the end of the message). The web site works great most of the time and I cannot reproduce any error in our test system. On the live system however with on averare of 5-15 requests per second I have a problem with that some requests (about 0.05%) will take over 300 seconds to complete. The other requests complete withing 5-10 seconds. It seem like if all the errornous requests end up with a Timer_EntityBody error in the error log. I have never seen this as an end user but I guess that they will receive some kind of error message. I am trying to find out what can be causing this errornous behaviour. Any ideas are welcome. I have read something about that there can be an MTU issue if ICMP and MTU protocols are blocked in the firewall. Does that sound reasonable? I have also read about updating to IIS 7 should do the trick. Does it sound reasonable? I think that the problem has another cause but I have no idea of what. I have tried running hte perormance monitor, monitoring for database locks and active transaction counts. I can see some of these in the perfmon log for the MSSQL server (another machine) for example: Active transactions is sometimes peaking and sometimes for long periods Lock waits per seconds is sometimes peaking Transactions per second is sometimes peaking Page IO Latch wait is sometimes peaking Lock wait time (ms) is sometimes peaking But I cannot see that any of these correlate to the errors in the IIS error log. On the IIS server machine I can also see with perfmon that some values peak a few times during a day: Request execution time Avg disk queue length I can neither see that any of these correlate to the errors in the IIS error log. • Set default system audio output port (for all accounts)

  The default output audio port Ubuntu doesn't work on my system. It should be "Analog Mono Output/Amplifier", instead of "Analog Output/Amplifier". I can easily change that in sound preferences, just by choosing the right port in the "Output" tab. The problem is this would only apply to a single account, and I would like to change it system-wide, so it applies to all accounts on the system (I have more than 100 users...). I'm after 2 hours of Googling, so any help would be appreciated.

• Suggestions for splitting server roles amongst Hyper-V virtual servers / RAID6 or RAID10? / AppAssure

  We have 2 Hyper-V hosts at present running 1 virtual server that was converted from a physical box running all roles. My plan is to split the roles over various virtual machines, upgrading to the latest software versions as I go, and use the backup server as a standby in case the main server fails. AppAssure backup software has a feature called Virtual Standby, so the VHD's can be ready to be fired up on the backup server if necessary. Off-site backups will be done via external USB drive for now. I'm just seeking some input/suggestions into how I'm planning to split the roles out amongst various virtual servers. Also, I'm curious how to setup the storage on the servers. We do not have any NAS's, SAN'S or any budget for this. What would the best RAID level be to use? I'm thinking either RAID6 (which is currently used) however I'm concerned about the write speeds, or RAID10 but again I'm worried that I can only lose 1 drive (from the same mirror) as opposed to any 2 with RAID6. I realise I have a hot swap for this, but what if a further drive fails during a rebuild? Is the write penalty of RAID6 worth the extra reliability over RAID10? Or will it be too slow with all the roles I am planning, therefore RAID10 is my only real option? The reason for the needed redundancy is I am the only technician and I'm not always on-site. Options I've considered: 1) 5 drives in RAID6 set, 200gb for host OS, rest for VM storage. 1 drive for hot swap - this is how it is currently setup 2) 4 drives in RAID10 set, 200gb for host OS, rest for VM storage. 2 drives for hot swap 3) 4 drives in RAID10 set for VM storage, 2 drives in RAID1 set for host OS. No drives for hot swap - While this is probably the best option with the amount of drives I have, I don't like the idea of having no hot swap 4) 3 drives in RAID6 set for VM storage, 2 drives in RAID1 set for host OS. 1 drive for hot swap All options give us enough storage capacity for our files, etc. We don't have any budget for extra drives or extra hot swap HD chassis for the servers. We have about 70 clients and about 150 users. • iTunes video black screen until select computer output

  I don't remember this happening before, but now whenever I play any video in iTunes (podcast video, movie, TV show, iTunes extras stuff but the menus work) it just shows a black screen with the sound playing. If I stop it, select "Computer" in the little output control on the iTunes video control panel that pops up, then play again, it works fine. What the heck? Tried rebooting, updating, with and without external monitor. OSX 10.6.6

• Ubuntu not booting, recovery mode not loading

  I have a dual-boot Ubuntu 11.10 and Windows 7 machine setup and last night I had to force shutdown Ubuntu during updates because it wasn't responding. Since then, Ubuntu will not boot up, only flashing a blank lit screen for a split second every couple of seconds. Booting in recovery mode does not help either, as it doesn't load at all. If anyone can help me diagnose what's wrong and figure out what to do, that would be greatly appreciated!

• Best way to partition 1TB (Linux&Windows7)

  Any intelligent way to partition 1TB and be prepared for resizing/adding/deleting partitions? I was thinking about LVM, but as far as i remember, Windows7 can't be installed on logical volume right? For now my plan is: - ~150GB for Windows7 and other stuff (VisualStudio..., maybe I'll split it 100/50 or something like that) - simple NTFS - 850GB = LVM - disk for linux (Ubuntu) and other stuff virtual machines etc. I'm mostly interested in how and what tools should I use to get easy in maintain partitions for both systems.

• No new mail icon in panel when using evolution

  I am using Ubuntu 10.04, kernel 2.6.32-21-generic, with Evolution 2.83.3. I have noticed that when I get a new email, it never shows a new mail icon in the panel. I had the same problem with 9.10, and I thought the problem would go away when I upgraded to 10.04. • What's the best way to backup a web server with 30GB of data?

  I currently have a server(Linux) running with around 10'000 users daily on it. The hoster offers a backup which I'm also using. Although I trust my hoster, I would like to have an offsite backup, just in case the hoster goes down for a longer time or goes bankrupt (you never know). • Streaming audio from microphone to network

  I have the following problem: I want to stream the audio I record with one machine to another machine in the same network. It seems that vlc is the best shot at the moment. I was able to stream a music file via vlc but streaming the audio from the microphone the same doesn't work. EDIT If I enable play locally the captured sound is played. Even streaming to another instance of VLC on the same machine doesn't work.
