  • How To Start NX/VNC Session At Ubuntu Boot Time?

    I want an NX or VNC session to start automatically when an Ubuntu server boots up - without a monitor connected - loading a certain user's desktop and keeping it loaded and ready until I log in via NX or VNC. How would one accomplish that? This code works via my terminal when I am logged in as the NX user, but not via root, and not in the init.d folder. No idea why? /usr/NX/bin/nxclient --session /home/user/.nx/config/SavedSession.nxs Please provide somewhat simplified instructions! I am certified linux newb.

  • Unable to boot to Ubuntu. Inconsistency in disk, X server didn't start. Illegal blocks in Inode

    I am unable to boot into my Ubuntu system. First I get that fsck died with exit status 4 Then I try to do it manually as prompted and I get that an Inode has illegal blocks and asked to clear it. Upon googling, I found that is because my HD has some problems I booted via Live cd and took a dd of the entire Ubuntu on an external HDD just in case. Is it safe to clear all the illegal blocks. How do I safely restore my environment if I replace my HD. Is there any thing i can do in the meanwhile to continue to use my laptop without significant loss of data. Perhaps a related error, the x server fails to start

    PHP 5.3.3 compiled on Mac OS X 10.6 - using /usr/lib when trying to start Apache... rather than /opt/local/lib specified when PHP was configured. Why is it trying to load from /usr/lib when I specified in my configure not to? httpd: Syntax error on line 115 of /private/etc/apache2/httpd.conf: Cannot load /usr/libexec/apache2/libphp5.so into server: dlopen(/usr/libexec/apache2/libphp5.so, 10): Library not loaded: /opt/local/lib/libiconv.2.dylib\n Referenced from: /usr/libexec/apache2/libphp5.so\n Reason: Incompatible library version: libphp5.so requires version 8.0.0 or later, but libiconv.2.dylib provides version 7.0.0 The error message above refers to /opt/local/lib which when I run: otool -LD /opt/local/lib/libiconv.2.dylib Message: /opt/local/lib/libiconv.2.dylib: /opt/local/lib/libiconv.2.dylib (compatibility version 8.0.0, current version 8.0.0) /usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib (compatibility version 1.0.0, current version 125.0.0) It shows that the version is different than what httpd is erring out as. I have a feeling I need to recompile Apache using newer libraries, but the error message still doesn't make too much sense to me.

    Since two or three updates Skype insists taking up a taskbar slot for its main window (I set it to use the “Compact View”, but it applies to the default view as well). Since I don't need the main window most of the time since I have individual windows for the contacts I'm writing to this is ? a taskbar button wasted if no other Skype windows are open and ? still in the way when there are other windows open as it's a window I never need but still sometimes mis-click on when the thumbnails show up. Is there a way to send Skype to the Notification area again?

  • Can Apache 2 be configured to start sending gzipped data early?

    We have Apache set up to gzip compress html pages before they are sent to the client browser. However, some of our pages are slowish to generate and it seems that Apache is holding on until it has the complete page, compressing it, then sending it to the browser. There are big chunks of the page (the main important bits) that are actually generated and output fairly quickly. Is it possible to configure Apache to start compressing and send data for the page as soon as the script starts outputting something? Is it is, can you offer any help is how to do this? If not, can you suggest any other way to get gzip compression working for the server? The scripts that generate the pages are written in PHP. We are using Apache 2.0 on Linux.

  • Can you make torrents start downloading only AFTER the previous torrent has finished downloading in uTorrent?

    If I have multiple downloads I can have them all download simultaneously or pause one and let the other download and then when the 1st is done I manually pause it and have the second download, afterward I let both seed for a while. But How can I set it so that the 2nd torrent will start downloading only after the 1st has finished. And is it possible to have the 1st pause seeding after it has finished downloading. I have nothing against seeding but I want to wait till all my downloads are done before sole seeding. If these things aren't possible in uTorrent is there another client that handles these things?

    I have 3 URLS all pointing to the same site. www.abc.co.uk www.xyz.com www.123abc.org I have a folder /foo/bar which has lots of sub folders and files in etc. I want to rewrite this to /bar. So if I have www.abc.co.uk/foo/bar/sheep/page.html I want it to redirect to www.abc.co.uk/bar/sheep/page.html. Is this possible. Sometime I may have a URL like www.abc.co.uk/foo/bar/foo/page.html so this would become www.abc.co.uk/bar/foo/page.html. Only the first instance of foo would be rewritten.

    I have create a script to start a server(my first question). Now I want it to run on the system boot and start the defined server. What should I do to get this done? My findings tell me put this file in /etc/init.d location and it will execute when the system will boot. But I am not able to understand how the first argument on the startup will be start? Is this predefined somewhere to use start as $1? If I want to have a case startall that will start all the servers in the script, then what are the options I can manage.   • PostgreSQL 9.1 on Ubuntu Lucid fails to start - how to debug?

    I'm using Vagrant with Chef Solo to setup a Lucid 64 box. I'm using a Chef recipe to install PostgreSQL 9.1 from Martin Pitt's backports. The install goes ok until the point where the database is started with /etc/init.d/postgresql start There's a log pause and the command fails. If I run pg_ctl manually, the database starts!     We have a number of sites that have blogs, like domainA.com/blog domainB.com/blog and we host the blogs on wordpress multi user: our-separate-wordpress-site.com/domaina_blog our-separate-wordpress-site.com/domainb_blog for SEO reasons we really, really want domainA.com/blog to be the blog url, not the other path. But we don't see any examples where this is done, because we need not to just rewrite the traffic, but cookies as well... is this possible with a webserver or a reverse proxy?

    I have a non-comercial website in which the users store some sensitive information so I feel the need to have a SSL certificate, but it seems that if I don't have a registered company I can't buy a green certificate. I have some related questions: Is it true that if I don't have a company, I can't have a green certificate? If I issue a standard (non-business) certificate that won't go green (from GoDadday, for instance), will it go red? Or will it have a less ugly display.. something more neutral that won't scary the user.

    I do a lot of screen print capturing, and I have just figured out how to use AutoHotKey to paste screen prints into MsPaint automatically. How to paste Print Screen on MS Paint automatically when press "PrtSc" button ? However, one small problem I have is that ... if I grabbed a screen with Alt-Prt Scr that is only 50x50 pixels, then there would be extra white margin around it, because MSPaint starts out with a larger canvas by default. How can I make it ALWAYS start with 1x1 instead?

[Apr 7 22:14:54] WARNING[1675] chan_sip.c: Invalid address for externhost keyword: sip.mydomain.com ... [Apr 7 22:14:54] WARNING[1675] acl.c: Unable to lookup 'sip.myprovider.com' And since the DNS fails it cannot register properly a cannot make outgoing or incoming calls. If I later, after bootup, restart asterisk everything works excelent. Any idea how I should setup things so that either: Delay Asterisk startup so that DNS is up and healthy first. Somehow get Asterisk to re-try the DNS thing later. Regards Leif

  • Thunderbird 3.0 refuses to start on Mac OS X?

    I just downloaded Thunderbird 3.0 on my Macbook Pro running Leopard, and installed it in /Applications. When I attempt to start it, the icon opens on the Dock as normal, but I get the following dialog. I don't have a ~/Library/Application Support/Thunderbird directory at all, let alone a .parentlock file. While I didn't expect it to help, I did reboot my system. And sign out and back in. And close all programs besides Thunderbird. Earlier versions of Thunderbird have worked just fine.

  • How do I start Chrome using a specified "user profile"?

    I use the new built-in "Users" feature of Chrome to switch between Home/Work accounts easily. However, Chrome remembers the "last" user profile you had selected when launching new windows. This is a problem if I close down my "Home" profile last, because when I then click the Email shortcut on my taskbar, because it goes to mail.mycompany.com using my Home profile, and I'm not logged in. I'd like to change the shortcut to the company webmail to pass a switch that tells Chrome to always start as the "Default" user, regardless of the last one used. Note: I have tried user-data-dir, and this seems to do something very different, completely isolated from the Users functionality built in to Chrome. It's possible I'm using it wrong, but please test this before assuming it does the same thing and posting an answer ;-)

    On my VPS i've installed debian, apache+php. I have 2 users: foo and bar. Apache is configured to execute php files from /home/foo/htdocs. I created dir: /home/foo/htdocs/bar/ and made it home dir for user bar. Hover, I need to make a restriction: bar can't read, write or executre any files outside his own dir, but Apache has to be able execute all php files from /htdocs. I tried to chown the bar dir only for user bar, also experimented a lot with chmod but without a result so far. If there's any better way to satisfy my needs don't hesitate to write about it.     When MacOS boots up and the users is prompted to select the account (s)he wants to login into, the users can either click the name / icon of the account with the mouse or just type in the name of the account. I want to do the same at the login screen of Windows7: Login screen pops up, I start to type my account name, I select the account with enter and then I type the password and enter again. No usage of the mouse involved. (I am aware of tab-cycling and hard-to-follow-the-almost-invisible-marker-of-where-the-focus-is-right-now)

  • Is there a way to automatically keep Chrome/Ask Tool Bar from installing?

    So of lately, I've had to warn my users to watch out for unwanted programs that are coming in with Adobe Flash and Java updates. Adobe seems to be pushing Google's Chrome and Java with the Ask.com Toolbar. I admit that it could be much worse because both instance simply require an uncheck during some point of the update process, but on a large scale, prevention is better than confrontation. Any suggestions?

  • Does Windows 8 support the "start in [folder]" property for shortcuts?

    I use Foobar2000 to play music, and for years now I've run it in what they call "portable mode". What that means is that the program itself isn't actually "installed" in the traditional Windows sense. All "non-system" dll's required by the application are in the same folder as the executable; earlier versions of Windows find them there, and everything runs fine. But Windows 8 fails because it doesn't find them. I want things set up this way because I keep Foobar2000 on a portable external hard drive, so I can just move it between different computers without having to go through the Windows install process. With all previous versions of Windows, I could either directly run the application from File Explorer, or create a shortcut on the desktop with the "start in folder" property set to the actual folder containing the program. I can still use the first method, but I want a shortcut! Is there any way to do what I want?

  • Scroll bar for vim(curses-based one, not gvim)?

    As a Linux user, I have been quite comfortable with CLI and TUI tools, but I miss the little scrollbar present in almost every GUI program. It has always been easier for me to know how long the file is and where I am from the scrollbar instead of "9752 lines, 24%". What I expect is a ASCII scrollbar that looks like | | | | # # # | | | and I can configure to appear on the left or right (and if on the left, the relative position to line numbers and fold marks). Is there already a Vim plugin to do this, or how can I write my own one? Vim's plugin framework doesn't seem to support such UI modifications directly.

  • How do I display the full title bar in Firefox 29?

    With Firefox 29, it no longer displays the full title. For example, in this screen shot here, it only display the beginning of "The New York Times - Breaking News, World News & Multimedia". How can I make it display the whole thing? EDIT (for clarification): I'd like to see the full title of the web page of the tab I am on at all times (hovering the cursor would not work for me). Making the tab full width only works if I have 1 or 2 tabs, but most of the time I have many more tabs so this wouldn't work for me.
