• Ubuntu, No wireless networks found after correctly installed madwifi

  Hi, I just installed madwifi on my MSI laptop with an Atheros AR5001 wifi card & Lucid. As far as I can see and according to System - Administration - Hardware drivers the install was successful and the card + driver is up and running. However, I don't see any wireless network (my windows PC can see about 5 wireless networks). I tried it with the network manager applet as well as with wicd. If I try to connect to "Hidden Wireless Network" via nm-applet, it will start to connect for a while but is unable too (although I supply it with the correct WEP settings & key) So, I'm unable to use my wireless network. What am i doing wrong?   I'm attempting to set up NFS file sharing and keep getting the error... mount.nfs: access denied by server while mounting 192.168.1.110:/myshared Here is the exact command I'm using to mount sudo mount -o nolock 192.168.1.110:/myshared /home/emiller/MyShared I have set 'Enabled NFS' in DSM and set nfs priviledges in the the Shares section of the control panel. Here is the /etc/exports entry from the NAS. volume1/myshared 192.168.1.*(rw,sync,no_wdelay,no_root_squash,insecure_locks,anonuid=0,anongid=0) I read some things about the hosts.allow and hosts.deny but it seems like if they are empty they aren't used for anything. I can see the share when I run ... showmount -e 192.168.1.110 Any help would be appreciated in this matter.

• Groups issue on Ubuntu

  Hello, I am member of couple of groups lets say Master, Student, Web. The problem is that by default whatever I do is first created under student group. I need to set it so it is created with Web group. Folder www/ where I need to write file is already mode 770. But because it picks up my student group it does not allow me to write to that folder. Is there any way to change the group that I create files under. If I execute groups it lists all groups so I am member of correct group I just cant write to the folder. Anyone?

  I recently bought a TV-IP312W wireless IP camera. I've completed the basic setup on the camera itself, and confirmed I can stream video using the utility CamViewer. Now I'm trying to access the camera from ZoneMinder, so I can setup monitors and alerts. However, I'm finding the documentation a bit laking. Following the tutorial and a forum post, I've install ZoneMinder, and can access the web interface, but I'm getting stuck at the "Check that your Camera Works!" section. I can add a monitor, but after I add the configuration: Source Type: FFMPEG Source Path: http://192.168.1.105/cgi/mjpg/mjpeg.cgi?.mjpeg all I get is a broken image. What am I doing wrong?

  cant understand what these are even though i've read articles about them. does it has something to do with 32 bits and 64 bits CPU? so why is it saying "AMD"64 and "I386"? AMD is a label just like INTEL? so if I've got Intel Core 2 Duo (Macbook pro) then i cant use amd64 even though Intel Core is 64 bits. thanks for explanation!

  I am working on implementing a custom server application that should be capable of handling a very large volume of traffic. I am aware that this type of question has been asked a lot, but I haven't been able to find a good answer. What I'm really looking for is for a server with given specs which OS will be able to handle a larger traffic faster and more reliably. I do not care about rights management or any other features. I am fairly good with both platforms, and so I would like to pick the OS with better performance on a clean install, and with nothing else running. Thanks in advance.

• Where does amavisd-new log on ubuntu, by default

  I have a misbehaving amavisd on a mail server. It starts and then silently stops. Init script outputs successful start whan invoked manually, however the next second I check the status and the service is off. Nothing is listening on it's ports. I googled. I checked out the configuration files, I checked out init.d script. It starts, then it stops. And I have no idea what's going on, since I can't find the log file (no it's not /var/log/amavis.log or anything logical like that).

• Ubuntu 9.10 x86_32 with PAE causes graphics issues, mainly slowness

  I've tried the 64bit version and found I was constantly hitting a brick wall trying to get 32bit stuff to run; I'd previously used PAE on 9.04 without any issues so figured I'd give it a shot. However, on 9.10 it seems PAE or the process of enabling PAE breaks the nvidia drivers/module somewhat as performance is terrible; I can't even enable desktop effects and there's lots of artifacting on random controls. Disabling the pae image and rebooting fixes the issue however I'm then stuck with "only" 2.7Gb of ram and unable to use the full 8gb that's installed. Is there somthing special I need to do when using pae and nVidia drivers or should I be using 64bit and just figure out how to force run 32bit packages? :-p

  I've got a laptop with a DVI and VGA output on the back. With everything connected it will only allow me to run 2 of the 3 monitors e.g. laptop display + VGA or DVI+VGA but not all 3. xrandr says I have 2 CRTC's, 0 and 1. The internet says I should be able to share a CRTC if the modeline is the same, and my 2 external monitors are the exact same make and model. How do I convince the software to drive all this hardware?

  I've apache2 server installed on a machine that connected to two different networks, therefore it has two different addresses: 192.168.1.111 (static ip on ethernet network) and 109.253.78.211. when connecting through 109.253.78.211 on the browser, the web pages are displayed perfectly, However, when connecting through 109.253.78.211 the web pages are displayed partially. I've not installed any firewalls. I'll really appreciate if you could redirect me to checks I should commit to reach the source of the problem. Thank you :)

  At this moment I am preparing a virtual server to host a web application which needs php5.3 The virtual server base image is always Hardy (8.04 LTS). There is no php5.3 until the upcoming release in a few days: Lucid (9.04 LTS). I am seeing to options: - waiting until the final version is released and then start preparing this server - Now upgrading to the beta (do-release-upgrade --devel-release) and when the final release has come upgrading to that For time constraints I would prefer the second option. I only can't find whether it will be easy to upgrade from a beta to the 'clean' final release. Is this possible in an easy way. Will it have any drawback for security or will there be any traces left of it being ever a beta release? Note: the server will not go into production before the LTS is really installed.

  I've got an ASUS G73JH, and whenever I suspend it or hibernate it, it will not wake up. The screen stays backlight but is black. I can't: Awaken it with the keyboard Awaken it with the mouse Soft power-off by pressing the power button I have to hold down the power button and shut it down that way, and this seems a little unreasonable. • Ubuntu - Create a link to a specified directory so I can easily change to that directory

  Is it possible to create a symlink to a directory, like /var/lib/tomcat6/webapps/MyWar that I can access from everywhere? I want to be able to say cd myapp from anywhere in the directory tree and go to that directory. Is it only possible in the directory where I create the symlink? Do I have to update my ~/.bashrc file to include an alias like: alias myapp="cd /var/lib/tomcat6/webapps/MyWar" and then just type myapp from anywhere? What is the best way to handle this situation so I don't always have to type in the long directory? I also want to be able to use that parameter in say a copy command, so the alias wouldn't help in that situation. Hopefully I can do something similar where ~ maps to the home directory in any command.

  Hi, I have done something quite silly and not sure how to fix it. I modified some of the gnome keyboard short cuts and was trying to disable the "Run Application" command. In the process I assigned it to the delete key and every time I hit delete the "Run Application" window comes up. It would not normally be a problem but the "Keyboard Shortcuts" no long has the short cut in the window so I can't disable it. Any help advice would be appreciated. Cheers Ben

  Hello all. Subject really says it all. When I try to click on any track, Amarok rapidly moves through the playlist, pulling external information (wikipedia etc) for each song, but not playing it. I feel like it might be a problem with my sound card or driver or something, but all other media players work fine. I can play sounds from within Amarok when I test different sound devices (they all play). I removed the program and re-installed it and still no luck. Any ideas?
