  • What is the recomended setup for a small .net/php development shop?

I've recently evolved from freelancer to a small .net/php development shop and we're trying to figure out what the best tools for team development will be (code repository, continuos integration server, automated testing, etc.). Do you have some recommendations, preferible open source or low cost since we are starting out. (We already have visual studio for all the team members). Thanks

  • How does your team work together in a remote setup?

    Hi, we are a distributed team working on the object database db4o. The way we work: We try to program in pairs only. We use Skype and VNC or SharedView to connect and work together. In our online Tuesday meeting every week (usually about 1 hour) we talk about the tasks done last week we create new pairs for the next week with a random generator so knowledge and friendship distribute evenly we set the priority for any new tasks or bugs that have come in each team picks the tasks it likes to do from the highest prioritized ones. From Tuesday to Wednesday we estimate tasks. We have a unit of work we call "Ideal Developer Session" (IDS), maybe 2 or 3 hours of working together as a pair. It's not perfectly well defined (because we know estimation always is inaccurate) but from our past shared experience we have a common sense of what an IDS is. If we can't estimate a task because it feels too long for a week we break it down into estimatable smaller tasks. During a short meeting on Wednesday we commit to a workload we feel is well doable in a week. We commit to complete. If a team runs out of committed tasks during the week, it can pick new ones from the prioritized queue we have in Jira. When we started working this way, some of us found that remote pair programming takes a lot of energy because you are so focussed. If you pair program for more than 5 or 6 hours per day, you get drained. On the other hand working like this has turned out to be very efficient. The knowledge about our codebase is evenly distributed and we have really learnt lots from eachother. I would be very interested to hear about the experiences from other teams working in a similar way. Things like: How often do you meet? Have you tried different sprint lengths (one week, two week, longer) ? Which tools do you use? Which issue tracker do you use? What do you do about time zone differences? How does it work for you to integrate new people into the team? How many hours do you usually work per week? How does your management interact with the way you are working? Do you get put on a waterfall with hard deadlines? What's your unit of work? What is your normal velocity? (units of work done per week) Programming work should be fun and for us it usually is great fun. I would be happy about any new ideas how to make it even more fun and/or more efficient.

    For example in Sketchflow add-in there is ApplicationFlowPane (derrived from PrototypingPane) which registers itself using IWindowService like this: service.RegisterPalette(this.PaletteRegistryName, this, this.Caption, this.KeyBinding); But i can't see where it is defined that it is docked on bottom pane. Before someone replies that it's at: %AppData%\Microsoft\Expression\Blend3\Workspaces No it's not there because those files do not exists at first run. The question is how can i put my window at certain position with Expression Blend 3 plug-in api ? update 1: It seems that to achive what i want i have to change design.xaml (where workspaces are defined) which is loaded from satellite assembly Microsoft.Expression.Blend.resources.dll (method load in class FrameworkPackage in Microsoft.Expression.Blend.dll). But since this dll is strongly named i can't change it. So now the question is. Is there any other way I can change Design Workspace at runtime ?

    In a Windows forms application, within a DataGridView, I have 4 different DataGridCombobox controlshow can I set up the handler SelectedIndexChanged handler for the first combobox via the EditingControlShowing event. I added code for a second combobox but the SelectedIndexChanged didn't get wired up. Here's my code.   • RSpec setup for an application that depends on an external database from another application.

    I've had to add features to an application that depends on a database from another application. I've been able to set up a connection to this external database and pull data from it. However, I'm not sure how to get my main application to create a test database for this external application. It would be awesome if there some way to pull in the schema for this database and create it in the same manner that 'rake db:test:prepare' does. Is there any configuration capabilities for RSpec to do this, or will I have to roll my own task?

    I'm working on a python based server product where a user can install WSGI-based python apps on their server. I can enforce any restriction on the application structure or format to make this easy. The user workflow would be: browse an app market, showing a list of WSGIpython apps select an app and choose "install" the app would be downloaded from a remote server to the user's server the http server would then have to be configured to start serving that application from the app's id, ex. a blog app with an id of "blog" at "/blog/", so all requests below /blog/ would be seen as root by the blog application. Any suggestions on how to set something like this up? Holler if my flow of consciousness lost you ;)

    Hello all, I have a few onclick and on mouseover events in my html generated by PHP, something like this: <div onmouseover="fave('heart_<?php echo $row['id']; ?>';" class="heart"><a href=""></a></div> I wish to make use of unbind on the mouseover but it hasn't worked when I tried this: $('#'+ id).unbind('mouseover'); So I am guessing unbind will only work with events created by JQuery?     Hi! I have an ASP.NET 4.0 website that has an Entity Data Model hooked up to WCF Data Service. When the Service and Model are in the same assembly everything works. Unfortunately, when I move the Model to another "shared" assembly (and change the namespace) the service compiles but throws a 500 error when launched in a browser. The reason I want to have the Model in a common assembly (lets call it RiaTest.Shared) is that I want share common validation code between the client and service (by checking "Reuse types in referenced assemblies" in the Advanced tab of the Add Service Reference dialog). Anyway, I've spent a couple of hours on this to no avail so any help in the regard would be appreciated...

  • How do I setup a shared session between two users on my Ruby on Rails powered site?

    Hey guys, The website that I'm building includes a section where two users can interact. I think I know how to do most of it, except the actual session sharing part. I'm using Ruby on Rails & Javascript (jquery), and I've got user login and session management all working okay. Would the best way to create a shared session be to have a SharedSession model, with accompanying database table, with participant1ID, participant2ID etc? Is there a better way? This file is linked into a static library, which is then linked into the main program. I have similar code in other files running fine, that looks something like: bool ____nonexistant_value = executeAction(); However, it does not work inside this file unless I make use of a function implemented in this file. It does work if the library is compilied as a shared library. I'd prefer to link this statically as the library is only a convience as the file is in a different directory.

    So I'm writing a Django based website that allows users select a color scheme through an administration interface. I already have middleware/context processors that links the current request (based on domain) to the account. My question is how to dynamically serve the CSS with the account's custom color scheme. I see two options: Add a CSS block to the base template that overrides the styles w/variables passed in through a context processors. Use a custom URL (e.g. "/static/dynamic/css//styles.css") that gets routed to a view that grabs all the necessary values and creates the css file. I'm content with either option, but was wondering if anyone else out there has dealt with similar problems and could give some insight as to "Best Practices".

  • Is it possible to deploy a Ruby app on a plain clean Passenger setup?

    I'm thinking to something really similar on what you can do with mod_php: drop an application in some way inside Apache and making it run with Passenger, without adding anything inside httpd.conf (no vhost, nothing except the basic Passenger configuration). It's something very similar to Wordpress or many other frameworks: just unzip/svn checkout it inside a folder and run it. I know that it's possible with CGI and FCGI, but I'm wondering if it's also possible to tap in the speed of Passenger. I've tried fiddling with the Rack instructions on the official website trying to find a specific .htaccess and config.ru configuration, but nothing so far. I know it's not common, but... is it even possible?

    I'm coming across references to 'Grails' and 'Groovy' quite often these days.. mostly on how great a productivity booster it is as opposed to standard J2EE, or things like JSF, Struts etc.. And there's also an impressive set of case studies in support of this on their web site too. So I just thought I would explore some of it.. As I start off on this, I was curious if there was any material (link, blog, article, paper..) that explains what are the special features in Grails+Groovy (and not found elsewhere, in the J2EE world) that makes it a more productive environment to work in?
