• TimeZoneInfo - why can't i seem to create an instance of it?

  I'm trying to use the EWS API to access an Exchange server from a console program i'm writing. I've specified the type of exchange server i'm connecting to but when I try to execute the code i have, it gives me Error 1 The type 'System.TimeZoneInfo' is defined in an assembly that is not referenced. You must add a reference to assembly 'System.Core, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089'. C:\Documents and Settings\jsorensen\My Documents\Visual Studio 2005\Projects\ConsoleApplication2\ConsoleApplication2\Program.cs 26 13 ConsoleApplication2 Does Microsoft Visual Studio Academic Edition not support TimeZoneInfo or is the version of .Net that XP can have not up-to date enough to work with the EWS API? I'm moderately new to programming in C# so some of the stuff is still confusing. Thanks.

• Unkillable console windows

  I'm developing an OpenGL based 2d simulation with GLUT under Visual C++ 2008, sometimes when I have an assert() or unhandled exception and break into the debugger, the GLUT display window closes, but the console window remains open.They just cant be killed!!! They do not show up with Task manager, Process Explorer or any other tool, I cannot find the window handle using the Spy++ tool either. Worst thing is they prevent my system (Windows XP) from shutting down, I have to manually poweroff (and of course I have to run chkdsk on my drives and invariably it finds and fixes minor errors after bad shutdowns) Has anyone come across such an issue?

• Making an animated taskbar app

  Hi. I have a HP notebook (running XP). I have seen on IBM computers, that they have a power-meter (it looks like a bar). It displays percentage of power left in battery. It is displayed in the taskbar. Not in the systemtray. Either on the left side or the right side of the potential language toolbar. The application is animated, since the percentage of power (0-100%) chances. It fills up the bar with a green color according to the percentage. So half would be colored green if the power is down to 50%. Now, since it is an IBM application for IBM notebooks, I want/need to make a copy of it. My real question is though, how do I make an animated taskbar application?

• SSH Password/User problem with Cygwin sshd service

  hello I just set up SSHd through Cygwin on a Windows XP Pro box overseas using a RAT and discluded the openssh package from the install. I ran the cywin shell (from c:\cywin) and ran Now, It's under a port I know is safe and fowarded properly, but I won't share it's number. It's not a common port, but it's under 40000. Firewalls are off etc etc. I'm on the first Admin account made on the box. (It's full admin) I've run the following commands chmod +r /etc/passwd chmod +r /etc/group hmod 777 /var /*Created New Admin User Account To Be Used via SSH*/ mkpasswd -cl > /etc/passwd mkgroup --local > /etc/group I can connect locally, but not externally. I know my ports etc are fine. Any possible problems, as i really need this tunnel up :P

• Distributing WPF apps to a legacy user base: How seamless is it?

  I'm considering developing a WPF application, to be hosted by a legacy Windows app (C++), and I'm trying to get a better sense of how feasible it'll be to do so, given the broad user base I'm targeting. Knowing WPF targets .NET 3.5, I'm looking for some insight as to what the field looks like right now -- who's already got the runtime, whether it's distributed by Windows Update, if so, how (e.g., as an optional or required download, to which operating systems, etc.), whether XP pre-XP2 supports it (and how), and so on. The current version's got many thousands of users, using all manner of Windows operating systems, and while I'd very much like to leverage WPF to breathe some life into their user experience, I want to make sure I'm not shutting anyone out by doing so, or burdening them with a download they might have to do manually. I realize most, or all, of this information's out there already, in various places, but I figured I'd ask here first, since I'm sure some of you've probably already gone down this road and have valuable experiences to share. • Memcache localhost connection oddity

  When I try to connect to memcache using this code: $memcache = new Memcache; $memcache->connect('localhost', 11211) or die ("Could not connect"); The call dies with the "Could not connect" error, but if I use localhost's IP: $memcache = new Memcache; $memcache->connect('127.0.0.1', 11211) or die ("Could not connect"); It works! So what's my problem? Well, this new computer is the only development environment I've setup that's been sensitive to that difference. I'm not about to go changing the settings on any code for what seems to be a computer specific issue, but I can't figure out what could be causing this behaviour... Any ideas? I'm running XP, memcached 1.2.4, and wampserver 2. I've checked the hosts file and it does have an entry for localhost.

• Scheduled task username changed

  Hi, I created a user on our exchange server, but later changed the username. Now, when I create a scheduled task for that user, and change it's settings (run only when logged on), the username is automatically changed back to the old username. What's causing this and how do I make sure the correct, new username is used for the task (otherwise it won't run), security settings are okay. I did already log in with a different user to delete the profile on the computer and tried again with this user to no avail. The OS is windows xp, the exchange server is on windows server 2003. • Can i make an installer for my delphi programme?

  I have made a delphi programme, which consists of a .exe and two custom file types that i have made (called Data.data and variables.data) I want to create a programme / find a programme that would place a copy of the main .exe in a folder in the program folders of XP, along with the .data files, and then place a shortcut to the programme on the desktop (ideally it would also put a folder in the start menu - all programmes with the programme. I should probably also make an uninstaller as well, that would remove the desktop shortcut, and delete the files. Is there a free piece of software i can use to create this, or is there any way i could achieve this myself through delphi?

• How to display recently installed programs and when they were installed?

  I have a Windows XP and I just installed about 12 new programs. Big mistake! Before I installed these programs, my internet connection was running great. But now after installing and restarting my laptop, the internet is crawling. How can I see what was changed? Hint: prior to installing these 12 programs, I installed IE version 8. So probably if I removed that it would fix it, but the problem is I need IE in order for my SQL/C# web application to work properly.

• Problem with an application on USB, a tricky one

  I have this application on USB built in VS 2008, on win7 , the USb has two partitions one hidden and other normal one, when i run the application on normal part , it has to swap the part to hidden and run the applications present in hidden part. When i run the application in normal part from USB , the memory swaps but the applications in hidden part are not run. but i can see the application running in Task manager. when i copy the application and run it from the desktop, the application works seamlessly, without any glitch. I guess some thing is holding the application process when run from USB, i cannot safe eject the USB too. CAn some one give me a clue as to what can be done to resolve. Also the application works well on Windows 7 as expected. The problem is on XP

So in order to apply thames or colour schemes what should i do?   Hello all, I'm just a beginner and I have a need to parse a NTFS partition for the purpose of extracting Security Descriptors. (I been trying to use the native functions of the Windows API, but my conclusion is that something is seriously wrong with the functions' behavior, or their documentation.) • (Windows) How to lock all applications (explorer, task manager etc.) and make only the browser activ

  I'm trying to run only the browser in the system - locking access to everything else. Only the supervisor can resume the normal functioning of the system after giving a password. This kind of activity is usually done by virus. Disabling the registry for Task manager etc. Does anyone know of any source available that does this? I might be able to pull it off in Windows XP. But have anyone tried this in Windows 7 ? The aim is to to emulate the Chrome OS on Windows. Only the browser. Nothing else.

  Hi, so far if I had to associate the file extension with my application I used to simply modify the registry. However I haven't been doing it for years, and I'm afraid the things might have changed a bit. I have no idea how to prevent registry access restrictions in Windows 7 / Vista (if there are any for HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT). Thus I'm looking for some delphi library, unit, code snippet or whatever which works reliably under XP, Vista and 7. Is there any which handles "backup" as well? It will be run at log in and log out. The command to run this program will be set via GPO and will include command line operators to control what data the program sends. • Subversion Copy Hook on Windows

  Hi I am working on a web based project in my free time. I have SVN set up on my machine (running XP). What I would like to do is have a copy of my repository copied to the htdocs folder (Dev machine) post-commit via a hook. That way I can test my changes in a browser. I know that I can write up a .bat file, but I'm not sure what the syntax would be. I can do a basic DOS Copy command, but I saw one example that provided a username and password to SVN at copy time. Do I need to do this? Can someone point me in the right direction as far a syntax for the .bat file? Or maybe even suggest a better method. Thanks

  Hi there: I am developing an application (Delphi 7, windows XP) that uses a connection to a remote SQL Server. Sometimes, that server is down, and I want to do something to start it. I was trying to start SQL Server in a local context, and it was fine, it worked... But the point is that I have to start it up from a remote machine. I can see SQL Server status from a remote server, but I can't start it up... Maybe it gets problems because of user and password, but where to specify the login to the remote machine? • Getting Synergy+ to work with Windows 7 64bit and Windows XP 32bit?

  My Windows XP box is Dell 4550 dimension. Windows 7 box is Home Premium. Synergy + installs fine on the Windows 7box, but using Windows xp as the client, it won't work? Do I need to disconnect the vga connection from my monitor and control entirely from the win7 dvi connection? In setting up ( links ) on Windows 7 as the server, I have NO way of inputing info? The setup on the Windows xp box is simple and does so OK, but I can't connect to the Windows xp box! It must be the vga connection on the Windows XP box. In order to use both machines, I have to turn one off and the other on. Hence-the VGA is needed on Windows XP. Any info/help most appreciated.

• Android: trouble updating to Android SDK Tools, revision 7.

  Currently I have Android SDK 2.1 (+ tools revision 4). I'd like to upgrade to Android SDK 2.2. When I try to do it I'm informed I need to upgrade Android SDK Tools to revision 7 first. So I agree, the process starts and then I get an error: -= warning! =- A folder failed to be renamed or moved. On Windows this typically means that a program Is using that Folder (for example Windows Explorer or your anti-virus software.) Please momentarily deactivate your anti-virus software. Please also close any running programs that may be accessing the directory 'D:\Install\Programming\android-sdk-working-dir\android-sdk_r04-windows\android-sdk-windows\too!s'. When ready, press YES to try again. Downloading Android SDK Tools, revision 7 Installing Android SDK Tools, revision 7 Failed to rename directory D:\Install\Programming\android-sdk-working-dir\android-sdk_r04-windows\android-sdk-windows\tools to D:\Install\Programming\android-sdk-working-dir\android-sdk_r04-windows\android-sdk-windows\temp\ToolPackage.old01. I am aware of http/https and antivirus issues. So I disactivated my AV. I also closed any application that might hold a handle to the folder. Eclipse is also closed (I start the manager via command line). However I still get the same error. Looks like the only app that can hold a handle to the folder is the manager itself, because its starting directory is the one the error complains about ('\tools'). I am on Win XP Pro + SP3. Does anyone have an idea?

• Can't write the SysWow64 value to registry with vbscript for Screensaver

  Scripts, registries, screen-savers, oh my! I'm trying to use a screen-saver on a Windows XP 64 bit machine which uses a .NET app which makes an interop call which relies on some x86 Shockwave Dlls (some Shockwave animation). Everything should be in the %systemroot%\WINNT\SysWOW64 directory. When the timeout for the screensaver occurs, the process should looks like this: Screensaver.scr - .NET app - shockwave animation. During installation I want a vbscript to my screen-saver file to copy the Screensaver.scr to the SysWow64 directory and then set the proper registry key to this file for Windows to launch the screen-saver. The code is something like this: Dim sScreenSaver, tScreenSaver sScreenSaver = "C:\SourceFiles\bin\ScreenSaver.scr" 'screensaver tScreenSaver = "C:\winnt\SysWOW64\" Set WshShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell") 'script shell to run objects Set FSO = createobject("scripting.filesystemobject") 'file system object 'copy screensaver FSO.CopyFile sScreenSaver, tScreenSaver, True 'set screen saver Dim p1 p1 = "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\" WshShell.RegWrite p1 & "SCRNSAVE.EXE", (tScreenSaver & "ScreenSaver.scr") After installation, I can verify the the Screensaver exists in the correct directory. However, the registry entry is not correct. In both the 32 and 64 bit regedit I see the HKCU\ControlPanel\Desktop\SCRNSAVE.EX is set to: C:\WINNT\system32\Screensaver.scr This isn't right. The screen-saver won't run from this directory. It only runs from SysWOW64. If I manually edit the registry with regedit to the correct SysWOW64 path everything works fine. Is this a problem with using the script or is this a Windows registry redirection, or filesystem redirection problem? You'd think this would be simple...

• Activate a python virtual environment using activate_this.py in a fabfile on Windows

  I have a Fabric task that needs to access the settings of my Django project. On Windows, I'm unable to install Fabric into the project's virtualenv (issues with Paramiko + pycrypto deps). However, I am able to install Fabric in my system-wide site-packages, no problem. I have installed Django into the project's virtualenv and I am able to use all the " python manage.py" commands easily when I activate the virtualenv with the "VIRTUALENV\Scripts\activate.bat" script. I have a fabric tasks file (fabfile.py) in my project that provides tasks for setup, test, deploy, etc. Some of the tasks in my fabfile need to access the settings of my django project through "from django.conf import settings". Since the only usable Fabric install I have is in my system-wide site-packages, I need to activate the virtualenv within my fabfile so django becomes available. To do this, I use the "activate_this" module of the project's virtualenv in order to have access to the project settings and such. Using "print sys.path" before and after I execute activate_this.py, I can tell the python path changes to point to the virtualenv for the project. However, I still cannot import django.conf.settings. I have been able to successfully do this on *nix (Ubuntu and CentOS) and in Cygwin. Do you use this setup/workflow on Windows? If so Can you help me figure out why this wont work on Windows or provide any tips and tricks to get around this issue? Thanks and Cheers. • Xpages conditional validation: make a field required only if report is being submitted as final

  Doing server-side Xpages conditional validation.... I want the follow validation to kick in only if the Report.Status field = 'Final'. (The users are allowed to submit the report as draft and come back and finish it later, when they submit as draft we don't want to make the fields required.) • Unable to access Java-created file -- sometimes

  In Java, I'm working with code running under WinXP that creates a file like this: public synchronized void store(Properties props, byte[] data) { try { File file = filenameBasedOnProperties(props); if ( file.exists() ) { return; } File temp = File.createTempFile("tempfile", null); FileOutputStream out = new FileOutputStream(temp); out.write(data); out.flush(); out.close(); file.getParentFile().mkdirs(); temp.renameTo(file); } catch (IOException ex) { // Complain and whine and stuff } } Sometimes, when a file is created this way, it's just about totally inaccessible from outside the code (though the code responsible for opening and reading the file has no problem), even when the application isn't running. When accessed via Windows Explorer, I can't move, rename, delete, or even open the file. Under Cygwin, I get the following when I ls -l the directory: ls: cannot access [big-honkin-filename] total 0 ?????????? ? ? ? ? ? [big-honkin-filename] As implied, the filenames are big, but under the 260-character max for XP (though they are slightly over 200 characters). To further add to the sense the my computer just wants me to feel stupid, sometimes the files created by this code are perfectly normal. The only pattern I've spotted is that once one file in the directory "locks", the rest are screwed. Anybody ever run into something like this before, or have any insights into what's going on here?
