  • How to bind form collection back to custom model object that uses 2 custom objects in asp.net mvc?

    - by baijajusav
What I'm trying to do is rather basic, but I might have my facts mixed up. I have a details page that has a custom class as it's Model. The custom class uses 2 custom objects with yet another custom object a property of one of the 2. The details page outputs a fair amount of information, but allows the user to post a comment. When the user clicks the post button, the page gets posted to a Details action that looks something like this: [AcceptVerbs(HttpVerbs.Post)] public ActionResult Details(VideoDetailModel vidAndComment) { ....} The only fields on the form that is posted are CommentText and VideoId. Here is what the VideoDetailModel looks like. public class VideoDetailModel { public VideoDetailModel() { Video = new VideoDTO(); Comment = new CommentDTO(); } public VideoDetailModel(VideoDTO vid) { Video = vid; Comment = new CommentDTO(); } public VideoDTO Video { get; set; } public CommentDTO Comment { get; set; } } VideoDTO has a few properties, but the ones I need are VideoId. CommentDTO's pertinent properties include CommentText (which is posting correctly) and a UserDTO object that contains a userId property. Everything other than the CommentText value is not being posted. I also have the following line on the ascx page, but the model value never gets posted to the controller. Html.Hidden("Model.Video.VideoId", Model.Video.VideoId); I'm really not sure what I'm missing here. I suppose if I added more form fields for the properties I need, they would get posted, but I only need 1 form entry field for the CommentText. If I could get the same Model objects value that were sent to the page to post with the page, that would help. I'll be happy to make any clarifications needed here. I'm just at loss as to what's going on.

  • Lightweight .NET web development?

    - by Breck Fresen
Fellow stack overflowers, I'm currently working on a project that has a sizable amount of both client and web code. The client code is written in C# and the web piece is written in PHP. Maintaining consistency between the two worlds is becoming cumbersome, and I want consolidate the web code to .Net. The issue is that I hate web development in ASP.Net Web Forms. I want something as raw as PHP, just using C# instead. I've read a little about ASP.Net MVC, but it looks like it abstracts too much of the request logic for my liking. Does anyone know of a lightweight way to allow C# + .Net to handle web requests? Should I be looking more closely at MVC? Thanks in advance, -- Breck

  • Server Controls in ASP.NET MVC without ViewState

    - by imran_ku07
Introduction :           ASP.NET Web Forms provides a development environment just like GUI or windows application and try to hide statelessness nature of HTTP protocol. For accomplishing this target, Web Forms uses ViewState (a hidden field) to remove the gap between HTTP statelessness and GUI applications. But the problem with this technique is that ViewState size which grows quickly and also go back and forth with every request, as a result it will degrade application performance. In this article i will try to use existing ASP.NET server controls without ViewState.   Description :           When you add a server control which needs viewstate, in the presentation view in ASP.NET MVC application without a form tag, for example,            <asp:TextBox ID="TextBox1" runat="server"></asp:TextBox>            It will shows the following exception,            Control 'TextBox1' of type 'TextBox' must be placed inside a form tag with runat=server             When you place this textbox inside a form tag with runat=server, this will add the following ViewState even when you disable ViewState by using EnableViewState="false"            <input type="hidden" value="/wEPDwUJMjgzMDgzOTgzZGQ6u9CwikhHEW39ObrHyLTPFSboPA==" id="__VIEWSTATE" name="__VIEWSTATE"/>             The solution to this problem is to use the RenderControl method of server control which is simply renders HTML without any ViewState hidden field.         <% TextBox txt = new TextBox();          txt.Text = "abc";          StringBuilder sb = new StringBuilder();          System.IO.StringWriter textwriter = new System.IO.StringWriter(sb);          HtmlTextWriter htmlwriter = new HtmlTextWriter(textwriter);          txt.RenderControl(htmlwriter);  %>        <%= sb.ToString() %>             This will render <input type="text" > without any View State. This technique become very useful when you are using rich server controls like GridView. For example, let's say you have List of Recalls in Model.Recalls, then you will show your tabular data as,     <%  GridView gv = new GridView();          gv.AutoGenerateColumns = true;          gv.DataSource = Model.Recalls;          gv.DataBind();         StringBuilder sb = new StringBuilder();         System.IO.StringWriter textwriter = new System.IO.StringWriter(sb);         HtmlTextWriter htmlwriter = new HtmlTextWriter(textwriter);         gv.RenderControl(htmlwriter);%>            <%= sb.ToString() %>             This code might looks odd in your presentation view. A more better approach is to create a HTML Helper method which contains the above code. Summary :        In some cases you might needs to use existing ASP.NET Web Forms server controls but also dislikes ViewState. In this article i try to solve this gap by using the RenderControl method of Control class. Hopefully you enjoyed and become ready to create HTML helpers for many of the existing server controls.

  • LINQ and the use of Repeat and Range operator

    - by vik20000in
LINQ is also very useful when it comes to generation of range or repetition of data.  We can generate a range of data with the help of the range method.     var numbers =         from n in Enumerable.Range(100, 50)         select new {Number = n, OddEven = n % 2 == 1 ? "odd" : "even"}; The above query will generate 50 records where the record will start from 100 till 149. The query also determines if the number is odd or even. But if we want to generate the same number for multiple times then we can use the Repeat method.     var numbers = Enumerable.Repeat(7, 10); The above query will produce a list with 10 items having the value 7. • Welcome to www.badapi.net, a REST API with badly-behaved endpoints

  • ASP.NET: images broken when combining URL Rewriting, asp:ImageButton and html base tag

    - by Nick G
Hi, I'm using URL Rewriting under ASP.NET 4 (using ISAPI_Rewrite) and I'm finding that that some of my images are not loading as .NET does not seem to understand I'm using an html BASE tag (pretty standard and essential when doing URL Rewriting): eg in my development environment I have: <base href='http://localhost/venuefinder/Website/'></base> and on my pages I have: <asp:ImageButton runat="server" ImageUrl="~/images/button.gif" /> On the home page of the site (http://localhost/venuefinder/Website/) this works fine, however on a page that uses URL rewriting, the image does not work: /venuefinder/Website/venues/ashton_gate_stadium/V18639/ ..as the browser is trying to load: http://localhost/images/buttons/search-button.gif instead of: http://localhost/venuefinder/Website/venues/images/buttons/search-button.gif This is happening because .NET is rendering the button as: src="../../../images/buttons/search-button.gif" ...which is incorrect. Is there any way I can correct this problem so that .NET renders the correct src attribute for the image? (without all the ../../../ etc)

  • ASP.NET MVC, Webform hybrid

    - by Greg Ogle
We (me and my team) have a ASP.NET MVC application and we are integrating a page or two that are Web Forms. We are trying to reuse the Master Page from our MVC part of the app in the WebForms part. We have found a way of rendering an MVC partial view in web forms, which works great, until we try and do a postback, which is the reason for using a WebForm. The Error: Validation of viewstate MAC failed. If this application is hosted by a Web Farm or cluster, ensure that configuration specifies the same validationKey and validation algorithm. AutoGenerate cannot be used in a cluster. The Code to render the partial view from a WebForm (credited to "How to include a partial view inside a webform"): public static class WebFormMVCUtil { public static void RenderPartial(string partialName, object model) { //get a wrapper for the legacy WebForm context var httpCtx = new HttpContextWrapper(System.Web.HttpContext.Current); //create a mock route that points to the empty controller var rt = new RouteData(); rt.Values.Add("controller", "WebFormController"); //create a controller context for the route and http context var ctx = new ControllerContext( new RequestContext(httpCtx, rt), new WebFormController()); //find the partial view using the viewengine var view = ViewEngines.Engines.FindPartialView(ctx, partialName).View; //create a view context and assign the model var vctx = new ViewContext(ctx, view, new ViewDataDictionary { Model = model }, new TempDataDictionary()); //ERROR OCCURS ON THIS LINE view.Render(vctx, System.Web.HttpContext.Current.Response.Output); } } My only experience with this error is in context of a web farm, which is not the case. Also, I understand that the machine key is used for decrypting the ViewState. Any information on how to diagnose this issue would be appreciated. A Work-around: So far the work-around is to move the header content to a PartialView, then use an AJAX call to call a page with just the Partial View from the WebForms, and then using the PartialView directly on the MVC Views. Also, we are still able to share non-tech-specific parts of the Master Page, i.e. anything that is not MVC specific. Still yet, this is not an ideal solution, a server-side solution is still desired. Also, this solutino has issues when working with controls that have more sophisticated controls, using JavaScript, particularly dynamically generated script as used by 3rd party controls.

  • Using set operation in LINQ

    - by vik20000in
There are many set operation that are required to be performed while working with any kind of data. This can be done very easily with the help of LINQ methods available for this functionality. Below are some of the examples of the set operation with LINQ. Finding distinct values in the set of data. We can use the distinct method to find out distinct values in a given list.     int[] factorsOf300 = { 2, 2, 3, 5, 5 };     var uniqueFactors = factorsOf300.Distinct(); We can also use the set operation of UNION with the help of UNION method in the LINQ. The Union method takes another collection as a parameter and returns the distinct union values in  both the list. Below is an example.     int[] numbersA = { 0, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 };    int[] numbersB = { 1, 3, 5, 7, 8 };    var uniqueNumbers = numbersA.Union(numbersB); We can also get the set operation of INTERSECT with the help of the INTERSECT method. Below is an example.     int[] numbersA = { 0, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 };     int[] numbersB = { 1, 3, 5, 7, 8 };         var commonNumbers = numbersA.Intersect(numbersB);  We can also find the difference between the 2 sets of data with the help of except method.      int[] numbersA = { 0, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 };     int[] numbersB = { 1, 3, 5, 7, 8 };         IEnumerable<int> aOnlyNumbers = numbersA.Except(numbersB);  Vikram

  • ASP.NET Tab Controls

    - by George Stocker
I'm currently attempting to create a tabbed interface in a web application, and based on my search, there aren't any 'built in' tab controls in ASP.NET. There are some in the ASP.NET AJAX downloadable toolkit, as well as a wealth of 'pay for use' third party Tab Controls. My question is: What Tab control have you used for ASP.NET applications, and why do you use it?

  • ASP.Net validation controls

    - by nikolaosk
In this post I would like to continue talking about validation in ASP.Net applications. I will look into the validation controls that ASP.Net provides. You can have a look at the first post in my blog regarding validation. You will show you that we can perform all our main validation tasks without almost writing any code. We will add validation to our form by adding one or more controls. We can also display messages to the user. The controls I am going to look into are: CompareValidator CustomValidator...(read more)

  • A Custom View Engine with Dynamic View Location

    - by imran_ku07
Introduction:          One of the nice feature of ASP.NET MVC framework is its pluggability. This means you can completely replace the default view engine(s) with a custom one. One of the reason for using a custom view engine is to change the default views location and sometimes you need to change the views location at run-time. For doing this, you can extend the default view engine(s) and then change the default views location variables at run-time.  But, you cannot directly change the default views location variables at run-time because they are static and shared among all requests. In this article, I will show you how you can dynamically change the views location without changing the default views location variables at run-time.       Description:           Let's say you need to synchronize the views location with controller name and controller namespace. So, instead of searching to the default views location(Views/ControllerName/ViewName) to locate views, this(these) custom view engine(s) will search in the Views/ControllerNameSpace/ControllerName/ViewName folder to locate views.           First of all create a sample ASP.NET MVC 3 application and then add these custom view engines to your application,   public class MyRazorViewEngine : RazorViewEngine { public MyRazorViewEngine() : base() { AreaViewLocationFormats = new[] { "~/Areas/{2}/Views/%1/{1}/{0}.cshtml", "~/Areas/{2}/Views/%1/{1}/{0}.vbhtml", "~/Areas/{2}/Views/%1/Shared/{0}.cshtml", "~/Areas/{2}/Views/%1/Shared/{0}.vbhtml" }; AreaMasterLocationFormats = new[] { "~/Areas/{2}/Views/%1/{1}/{0}.cshtml", "~/Areas/{2}/Views/%1/{1}/{0}.vbhtml", "~/Areas/{2}/Views/%1/Shared/{0}.cshtml", "~/Areas/{2}/Views/%1/Shared/{0}.vbhtml" }; AreaPartialViewLocationFormats = new[] { "~/Areas/{2}/Views/%1/{1}/{0}.cshtml", "~/Areas/{2}/Views/%1/{1}/{0}.vbhtml", "~/Areas/{2}/Views/%1/Shared/{0}.cshtml", "~/Areas/{2}/Views/%1/Shared/{0}.vbhtml" }; ViewLocationFormats = new[] { "~/Views/%1/{1}/{0}.cshtml", "~/Views/%1/{1}/{0}.vbhtml", "~/Views/%1/Shared/{0}.cshtml", "~/Views/%1/Shared/{0}.vbhtml" }; MasterLocationFormats = new[] { "~/Views/%1/{1}/{0}.cshtml", "~/Views/%1/{1}/{0}.vbhtml", "~/Views/%1/Shared/{0}.cshtml", "~/Views/%1/Shared/{0}.vbhtml" }; PartialViewLocationFormats = new[] { "~/Views/%1/{1}/{0}.cshtml", "~/Views/%1/{1}/{0}.vbhtml", "~/Views/%1/Shared/{0}.cshtml", "~/Views/%1/Shared/{0}.vbhtml" }; } protected override IView CreatePartialView(ControllerContext controllerContext, string partialPath) { var nameSpace = controllerContext.Controller.GetType().Namespace; return base.CreatePartialView(controllerContext, partialPath.Replace("%1", nameSpace)); } protected override IView CreateView(ControllerContext controllerContext, string viewPath, string masterPath) { var nameSpace = controllerContext.Controller.GetType().Namespace; return base.CreateView(controllerContext, viewPath.Replace("%1", nameSpace), masterPath.Replace("%1", nameSpace)); } protected override bool FileExists(ControllerContext controllerContext, string virtualPath) { var nameSpace = controllerContext.Controller.GetType().Namespace; return base.FileExists(controllerContext, virtualPath.Replace("%1", nameSpace)); } } public class MyWebFormViewEngine : WebFormViewEngine { public MyWebFormViewEngine() : base() { MasterLocationFormats = new[] { "~/Views/%1/{1}/{0}.master", "~/Views/%1/Shared/{0}.master" }; AreaMasterLocationFormats = new[] { "~/Areas/{2}/Views/%1/{1}/{0}.master", "~/Areas/{2}/Views/%1/Shared/{0}.master", }; ViewLocationFormats = new[] { "~/Views/%1/{1}/{0}.aspx", "~/Views/%1/{1}/{0}.ascx", "~/Views/%1/Shared/{0}.aspx", "~/Views/%1/Shared/{0}.ascx" }; AreaViewLocationFormats = new[] { "~/Areas/{2}/Views/%1/{1}/{0}.aspx", "~/Areas/{2}/Views/%1/{1}/{0}.ascx", "~/Areas/{2}/Views/%1/Shared/{0}.aspx", "~/Areas/{2}/Views/%1/Shared/{0}.ascx", }; PartialViewLocationFormats = ViewLocationFormats; AreaPartialViewLocationFormats = AreaViewLocationFormats; } protected override IView CreatePartialView(ControllerContext controllerContext, string partialPath) { var nameSpace = controllerContext.Controller.GetType().Namespace; return base.CreatePartialView(controllerContext, partialPath.Replace("%1", nameSpace)); } protected override IView CreateView(ControllerContext controllerContext, string viewPath, string masterPath) { var nameSpace = controllerContext.Controller.GetType().Namespace; return base.CreateView(controllerContext, viewPath.Replace("%1", nameSpace), masterPath.Replace("%1", nameSpace)); } protected override bool FileExists(ControllerContext controllerContext, string virtualPath) { var nameSpace = controllerContext.Controller.GetType().Namespace; return base.FileExists(controllerContext, virtualPath.Replace("%1", nameSpace)); } }             Here, I am extending the RazorViewEngine and WebFormViewEngine class and then appending /%1 in each views location variable, so that we can replace /%1 at run-time. I am also overriding the FileExists, CreateView and CreatePartialView methods. In each of these method implementation, I am replacing /%1 with controller namespace. Now, just register these view engines in Application_Start method in Global.asax.cs file,   protected void Application_Start() { ViewEngines.Engines.Clear(); ViewEngines.Engines.Add(new MyRazorViewEngine()); ViewEngines.Engines.Add(new MyWebFormViewEngine()); ................................................ ................................................ }             Now just create a controller and put this controller's view inside Views/ControllerNameSpace/ControllerName folder and then run this application. You will find that everything works just fine.       Summary:          ASP.NET MVC uses convention over configuration to locate views. For many applications this convention to locate views is acceptable. But sometimes you may need to locate views at run-time. In this article, I showed you how you can dynamically locate your views by using a custom view engine. I am also attaching a sample application. Hopefully you will enjoy this article too. • How do I use an ADO.NET managed provider in Excel?

    - by Eli
I have an ADO.NET Managed Data Provider that is registered in machine.config in DbProviderFactory - It is available for use from, say, Analysis Services, so I know it is correctly registered. However, I need to be able to query the managed provider from Excel, but the managed provider doesn't appear as a choice from Data Link Properties | All Ole Db Providers. How do I get an ADO.NET Managed Data Provider to appear there, or is there another technique I need to use? Thanks in advance, Eli.

  • Oracle ODP.NET und Windows PowerShell

    - by cjandaus
Danke!

  • Error pages in ASP.NET

    - by koevoeter
In ASP.NET you can retrieve the last unhandled exception via:(HttpContext.Current.)Server.GetLastError() // Server object is available as a property in Page and UserControl context This obviously only works in the same roundtrip. If you want to retrieve this information in your error page, you got a problem because the error page is not returned in the same roundtrip. The server responds with a redirect response and a new request to the error page is automatically sent. A common workaround would be to store the exception in your Session state from the Application_Error event in Global.asax. From ASP.NET 3.5 you can configure the redirect mode for error pages: <customErrors mode="On" defaultRedirect="~/Error.aspx" redirectMode="ResponseRewrite" /> This way the redirect response is not sent and the error page is returned right away. That implies that the browser is not aware of a page change and cannot reflect it in the address bar, so your original URL is not replaced with the URL of the error page, which might be what you actually want…

  • Identity in .NET 4.5&ndash;Part 1: Status Quo (Beta 1)

    - by Your DisplayName here!
.NET 4.5 is a big release for claims-based identity. WIF becomes part of the base class library and structural classes like Claim, ClaimsPrincipal and ClaimsIdentity even go straight into mscorlib. You will be able to access all WIF functionality now from prominent namespaces like ‘System.Security.Claims’ and ‘System.IdentityModel’ (yay!). But it is more than simply merging assemblies; in fact claims are now a first class citizen in the whole .NET Framework. All built-in identity classes, like FormsIdentity for ASP.NET and WindowsIdentity now derive from ClaimsIdentity. Likewise all built-in principal classes like GenericPrincipal and WindowsPrincipal derive from ClaimsPrincipal. In other words, the moment you compile your .NET application against 4.5,  you are claims-based. That’s a big (and excellent) change.   While the classes are designed in a way that you won’t “feel” a difference by default, having the power of claims under the hood (and by default) will change the way how to design security features with the new .NET framework. I am currently doing a number of proof of concepts and will write about that in the future. There are a number of nice “little” features, like FindAll(), FindFirst(), HasClaim() methods on both ClaimsIdentity and ClaimsPrincipal. This makes querying claims much more streamlined. I also had to smile when I saw ClaimsPrincipal.Current (have a look at the code yourself) ;) With all the goodness also comes a number of breaking changes. I will write about that, too. In addition Vittorio announced just today the beta availability of a new wizard/configuration tool that makes it easier to do common things like federating with an IdP or creating a test STS. Go get the Beta and the tools and start writing claims-enabled applications! Interesting times ahead!

  • .NET Reflector 7 Released

    - by Paulo Morgado

I was wondering if trying to use Memory Mapped Files would be the way to go, or if there is a better way with better .NET support. I was thinking of using the Data Cache but not sure of all the pitfalls of size of data being saved in the Cache.
