• How to configure mod_proxy_balancer to gracefully fail under high load

  We have a system which has one Apache instance in front of multiple tomcats. These tomcats then connect to various databases. We balance the load to the tomcat with mod_proxy_balancer. Currently we are receiving 100 requests a second, the load on the Apache server is quite low, but due to database heavy operations on the tomcats, the load there is roughly 25% (of what I estimate they can handle). In a few weeks there is an event happening and we estimate that our requests will jump significant, maybe by a factor of 10. I'm doing everything I can do reduce the load on our tomcats, but I know we are going to run out of capacity, so I would like to fail gracefully. By this I mean, instead of trying to deal with too many connections which all timeout, I would like Apache to somehow monitor average response time, and as soon as the response time to Tomcat is getting above some threshold, I would like a error page displayed. This means that users who are lucky still get a page rendered quickly, and those who are unlucky get a error page quickly. Instead of everyone waiting far too long for their page, and eventually everyone timing out, and the database being swamped with queries which are never used. Hopefully this makes sense, so I was looking for suggestions on how I could achieve this. thanks

• mod rewrite works fine apart from for missing directory index files

  I have a legacy web site hosted on Apache. It has a number of web pages sitting in the public web root and its subfolders. publicDocs/ directorywith_no_defaultfile/ some-legacy-flat-page.htm .htaccess index.php some-legacy-flat-page.htm I would like to start using Zend MVC for some of the newer pages. I have got a .htaccess mod rewrite rule working so that any request for a non-existent file is sent to be handled by the MVC bootstrap file (/index.php). With my current set-up, the following types of requests are routed to '/index.php', the MVC bootstrap: /index.php /blah /directorywith_no_defaultfile/bloo The following types of request are served by old legacy (flat) pages /some-legacy-flat-page.htm /directorywith_no_defaultfile/some-legacy-flat-page.htm But, when I a request a non-existent file that is a directory like these: /directorywith_no_defaultfile or /directorywith_no_defaultfile/ I get an error: Forbidden You don't have permission to access /directorywith_no_defaultfile/ on this server. Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request. I suspect this may have something to do with the way Apache handles default files. Do you know which Apache directives could be causing this?

• Active Directory problems while trying to perfom compare operation

  I have CentOs 5.5 with Apache 2.2 and SVN installed. Also I have Windows 2003 R2 with Active Directory. I'm trying to authorize users via AD so each user have access to repo if he is a member of corespondent group in AD. • Graphite not running

  I'm currently trying to install graphite 0.9.9 on a gentoo box using these instructions from the graphite wiki. Essentially, it fronts graphite using apache and mod_wsgi. Everything seems to have gone well, except that apache / the graphite webapp never seem to return a response to the web browser (the browser continuously waits to load the page). I've turned on the graphite debug info, but the only message in the log files is this, repeated over and over again in info.log (with the pid always changing): Thu Feb 23 01:59:38 2012 :: graphite.wsgi - pid 4810 - reloading search index These instructions have worked for me before to set up graphite on an Ubuntu machine.   I have a server running Debian, with an installation of Apache 2.2.16, with PHP/MySQL, and now also an instance of Wordpress. I am playing around with user/group rights on Debian, and I can't make it work the way I want it to. I believe Apache is using (only) the www-data user. The following setup works /var/www# chown -R www-data:nogroup wordpress /var/www# chmod -R 700 wordpress /var/www# ls -l | grep wordpress drwx------ 5 www-data nogroup 4096 Nov 1 09:30 wordpress The following doesn't work. /var/www# groupadd wordpress /var/www# usermod -a -G wordpress www-data /var/www# groups www-data www-data : www-data wordpress /var/www# chown -R nobody:wordpress wordpress /var/www# chmod -R 770 wordpress /var/www# ls -l | grep wordpress drwxrwx--- 5 nobody wordpress 4096 Nov 1 09:30 wordpress With the above settings, when I try to access the page in my browser, I get: You don't have permission to access /wordpress/ on this server. Here is my understanding: The folders are owned by the group wordpress, and the folders have all rights (read, write, execcute) given to the owning group, wordpress. Apache user www-data is a member of the group wordpress, so it should have all rights to the folders. What have I misunderstood?

• In APC+PHP, how much RAM is too much? Is it okay to set apc.shm_size to many GB?

  On our server we have a LOT of RAM for our traffic levels (16GB). The HTTP processes regularly eat up all CPU and need to be restarted without even getting close to using swap memory, so I'm looking for ways to spend RAM to ease the load on Apache (and/or help the seperate MySQL server which may be breaking Apache). I have many WordPress installs on the HTTPD instance so APC sometimes uses as much as 900MB of ram (according to the apc.php charts). Just in case I have apc.shm_size set to 1600MB which is more than it needs but not more than I can spare. This means there is usually lots of extra RAM available to APC but also very little turnover and fragmentation is never more than 1%. Is this dangerous? Should I be slimming down APC to less than 1GB just on principle? Should I be expecting some turnover within APC in the name of bringing it's overall footprint down? Having so much memory devoted to APC means that in top/htop every single httpd process shows ~1.9GB in the VIRT memory column. Obviously this is shared memory and not used per-process, but could it be hurting our server? NOTE: The problem with the server remains unclear but the effect is that about 60 times a day all 8 CPU's fill up to 100% and everything stops working until Monit sees that Apache is broken and restarts it (Monin also saves the MySQL server). I'm not sure if APC is even part of the problem but I'm trying to optimize everything just in case.

• What can be a reason for phpMyAdmin login to be not working (not at all, no reaction on submit)?

  When I open "http://localhost/phpmyadmin/", enter "root" as the user name and my MySQL root password and press go, then if I was using Firefox, I was getting offered to download index.php file (of a zero length), if I was using Opera 11, it said "Connection closed by remote server". Following recommendations I've removed all packages related to phpMyAdmin, PHP, MySQL and Apache and then reinstalled them step-by step (instead of just issuing apt-get install phpmyadmin and relying on the system to install the whole LAMP stack via dependencies as I've done before). The only change I've got was Firefox to stop offering to download index.php - now when I press Ok to submit my password, it just doesn't show any visible reaction at all. What may the reason be and how to fix it? I use up-to-date Xubuntu 11.04. Reinstalling the whole LAMP stack and phpMyAdmin did not help, neither did removing AppArmor. I've tried to use SQLBuddy instead, but there's exactly the same problem. So, I think, the problem is not in phpMyAdmin but in MySQL, Apache or something. MySQL seems to work if I use command line to access it. Apache & PHP seems to work also, as the login page of phpMyAdmin displays correctly.

• WAMP Installation - Multiple PHP Version Issues

  I have installed WAMP because I am attempting to modify an an application which uses Zend Optimizer (I cannot use Z.O. with PHP5.3+, which is why I decided to install WAMP). I downloaded the latest version - Wamp Server 2.1 - which comes bundled with PHP5.3.5. I then downloaded a PHP version that would be compatible with Z.O. - 5.2.9. - and a compatible Apache version, 2.0.63. My problem: PHP scripts run fine, but anything with MySQL does not work. Running the testmysql.php script returns the fatal error: Fatal error: Call to undefined function mysql_connect() in C:\wamp\www\testmysql.php on line 2". I have looked in the PHP INI files inside both PHP versions, and I'm fairly sure the relevant information is there. At least, there are parts inside that mention MySQL! Perhaps somebody could clarify exactly what information should be present? Also, when visiting a page that called phpinfo(), I noticed that the 'Loaded Configuration File' was pointing to C:\wamp\bin\php\php5.3.5\php.ini, even though I have enabled the older PHP version. I've stopped and started Apache, too, and that hasn't made a difference. Is anybody able to offer any assistance? Anything at all would be great; I'm not very good at messing around with Apache/

• Library conflict in Mac OS X

  I was trying to install the ImageMagick library on Mac OS X Snow Leopard, and first I tried port and, after it failed, homebrew. It updated some dependencies and installed ImageMagick without problems. So far so good. The problem came when I ran Apache. I got the following error in the system log: 07/04/11 12:55:15 org.apache.httpd[41841] httpd: Syntax error on line 115 of /private/etc/apache2/httpd.conf: Cannot load /opt/local/apache2/modules/libphp5.so into server: dlopen(/opt/local/apache2/modules/libphp5.so, 10): Library not loaded: /opt/local/lib/libpng12.0.dylib\n Referenced from: /opt/local/apache2/modules/libphp5.so\n Reason: image not found I checked the /opt/local/lib and surprise! I don't have the libpng12.0 but the libpng14.0. So, as far as I can tell, something went wrong installing the ImageMagick library. Now, I can't find a way to rollback to the previous libraries, other than copying them from the backup. Do you know if is there a way to recover the previous state or reinstall Apache? Or is this just a corrupt state and I must reinstall OS X?

• Mod_Rewrite w Apache mod_jrun22.so & ColdFusion 9 on cPanel

  How can I utilize mod_rewrite at either the httpd.conf level or per-directory level when mod_jrun22 seems to have short-stopped the rewrite process for ColdFusion pages? I have a ColdFusion 9 based site running on Centos 5.8 w cPanel. cPanel uses EasyApache 3 to manage virtual host containers and as such the conf for mod_jrun22.so, /usr/local/apache/conf/includes/pre_main_global.conf, is loaded prior to the main httpd.conf with the domain specific rules for the container. My assertion is that .cfm pages are failing to be rewritten due to the mod_jk22.so module having priority in the directive chain. To note, I also have a WordPress blog in the site where the rewrites appear to be working fine. For example the following code to remove the index file works fine for php and fails with cfm ... .htaccess under /blog/ : This works Options -Indexes -Multiviews <IfModule mod_rewrite.c> RewriteEngine On RewriteBase /blog/ RewriteRule ^index\.php$ - [L] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule . /blog/index.php [L] </IfModule> .htaccess under / : This does not work as expected. • Running Solr on VPS problem

  I have a VPS with Ubuntu OS. I run solr om my local machine (windows xp laptop) just fine. I have configured Jetty, and Solr just the same way as on my computer, but on the server. I have also downloaded the JRE and installed it on the server. However, whenever I try to run the start.jar file, the PuTTY terminal shows a bunch of text but gets stuck. I could pase the text here but it is very long, so unless somebody wants to see it I wont. Also, I cant view the solr admin page at all. Does anybody have experience in this kind of problem? Maybe java isn't correctly installed? It is a VPS so maybe installation is different. • Xamp on ubuntu serves php source for root url only

  Hey, Okay, so installed xamp on my ubuntu machine, started it up and everything worked. Apache ran my php app just fine (including requests to the root url "/"). However, after the first reboot since installing, when I request "http://localhost/" apache serves up the index php page as a phtml source file. All other urls (like "http://localhost/login") work as expected. Backgound: The only modification I made to xamp was to setup a vhost for my app. The app uses an .htaccess file where I define some rewrite rules (the app is an MVC framework and all urls are rewritten to a single entry point php file). I'm using Xamp because I need php = 5.3.0. I know apache will serve up the source of a php file when it doesn't know to process php files. But the config does indeed have "AddType application/x-httpd-php .php" and as I said, the app works for all urls except the root "/" (and only since I've rebooted). The .htaccess file does contain a DirectoryIndex directive. xamp 1.3.7a Ubuntu 9.10 Any ideas?

• D-Link wireless router losing outbound data

  I have a Linux box running the Apache web server behind a D-Link wireless router (nothing fancy, just standard kit that comes with Virgin Media broadband). My issue is that when requesting web pages (from within the network or via the web), the back end of the page seems to be being dropped. For example, I tried to display a text-only file, and all I could get was the first 40-70% of the file (it changed slightly with each refresh). The apache access logs show that only part of the data was being sent (~6000 bytes instead of the 12000+ bytes of the file). Removing my router from the equation fixes the issue and I can download any files no matter the size with no problems. My theory is that the uploaded packets are either being dropped or held up by the config of the router. Is there anything I can do to alleviate the problem? (Perhaps a way of reconfiguring the router to upload packets harder/better/faster/stronger or an option in apache that provides a workaround) As a last resort I will get a second NIC for my Linux box and turn it into a router, but that would mean the box will be on 24/7... not the most ideal of circumstances. • glm matrix conversion for DirectX

  For on of the coursework specification I need to work with DirectX, so I tried to implement a DirectX Renderer in my small cross-platform framework (to have it optionally available for Windows). Since I want to stick to my dependencies I want use glm for vector/matrix/quaternions math. The vectors seem to be fully compatible with DirectX, but the glm::mat4 is not working properly in DirectX Effects Framework. I assumed the reason is that DirectX uses row majors layouts and OpenGL column majors (although if I remember right internally in HLSL DX uses column major as well), so I transposed the matrix, but I still get no proper results compared to using XNA-Math. XNA-Version of the code (works): XMMATRIX world = XMMatrixIdentity(); XMMATRIX view = XMMatrixLookAtLH(XMVectorSet(5.0, 5.0, 5.0, 1.0f), XMVectorZero(), XMVectorSet(0.0f, 1.0f, 0.0f, 0.0f)); XMMATRIX proj = XMMatrixPerspectiveFovLH(0.25f*3.14f, 1.25f, 1.0f, 1000.0f); XMMATRIX worldViewProj = world*view*proj; m_fxWorldViewProj->SetMatrix(reinterpret_cast<float*>(&worldViewProj)); This works flawlessly and displays the expected colored cube. I recently got the book "Introductory Graph Theory" by Gary Chartrand to brush up on my math and have some fun. Here is an exercise from the book that I'm finding particularly befuddling: Suppose you and your husband attended a party with three other married couples. Several handshakes took place. No one shook hands with himself (or herself) or with his (or her) spouse, and no one shook hands with the same person more than once. After all the handshaking was completed, suppose you asked each person, including your husband, how many hands he or she had shaken. Each person gave a different answer. a) How many hands did you shake? b) How many hands did your husband shake? Now, I've been reasoning about this for a while, and trying to draw sample graphs that could illustrate a solution, but I'm coming up empty-handed. My logic is this: there are 8 different vertices in the graph, and 7 of them have different degrees. The values for the degrees must therefore be 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and x. The # of degrees for one married couple is (0, 6). Since all graphs have an even number of odd vertices, x must be either 5, 3, or 1. What's your solution to this problem? And, if you could solve it in python, how would you do it? (python is fun.) Cheers.

• Double type returns -1.#IND/NaN error when calculating pi iteratively

  I am working through a problem for my MCTS certification. The program has to calculate pi until the user presses a key, at which point the thread is aborted, the result returned to the main thread and printed in the console. Simple enough, right? This exercise is really meant to be about threading, but I'm running into another problem. The procedure that calculates pi returns -1.#IND. I've read some of the material on the web about this error, but I'm still not sure how to fix it. When I change double to Decimal type, I unsurprisingly get Overflow Exception very quickly. So, the question is how do I store the numbers correctly? Do I have to create a class to somehow store parts of the number when it gets too big to be contained in a Decimal? • Solving Naked Triples in Sudoku

  Hello, I wished I paid more attention to the math classes back in Uni. :) How do I implement this math formula for naked triples? Naked Triples Take three cells C = {c1, c2, c3} that share a unit U. Take three numbers N = {n1, n2, n3}. If each cell in C has as its candidates ci ? N then we can remove all ni ? N from the other cells in U.** I have a method that takes a Unit (e.g. a Box, a row or a column) as parameter. The unit contains 9 cells, therefore I need to compare all combinations of 3 cells at a time that from the box, perhaps put them into a stack or collection for further calculation. Next step would be taking these 3-cell-combinations one by one and compare their candidates against 3 numbers. Again these 3 numbers can be any possible combination from 1 to 9. Thats all I need. But how would I do that? How many combinations would I get? Do I get 3 x 9 = 27 combinations for cells and then the same for numbers (N)? How would you solve this in classic C# loops? No Lambda expression please I am already confused enough :) Many Thanks for any help,

• What function does .NET NPV() use? Doesn't match manual calculations

  I am using the NPV() function in VB.NET to get NPV for a set of cash flows. However, the result of NPV() is not consistent with my results performing the calculation manually (nor the Investopedia NPV calc... which matches my manual results) My correct manual results and the NPV() results are close, within 5%.. but not the same... Manually, using the NPV formula: NPV = C0 + C1/(1+r)^1 + C2/(1+r)^2 + C3/(1+r)^3 + .... + Cn/(1+r)^n The manual result is stored in RunningTotal With rate r = 0.04 and period n = 10 Here is my relevant code: EDIT: Do I have OBOB somewhere? • Run Javascript on the body of a Gmail message

  I want to display LaTeX math in the gmail messages that I receive, so that for example $\mathbb P^2$ would show as a nice formula. Now, there are several Javascripts available (for example, this one, or MathJax which would do the job, I just need to call them at the right time to manipulate the gmail message. I know that this is possible to do in "basic HTML" and "print" views. Is it possible to do in the standard Gmail view? I tried to insert a call to the javascript right before the "canvas_frame" iframe, but that did not work. My suspicion is that manipulating a Gmail message by any Javascript would be a major security flaw (think of all the malicious links one could insert) and that Google does everything to prevent this. And so the answer to my question is probably 'no'. Am I right in this? Of course, it would be very easy for Google to implement viewing of LaTeX and MathML math simply by using MathJax on their servers. I made the corresponding Gmail Lab request, but no answer, and no interest from Google apparently. So, again: is this possible to do without Google's cooperation, on the client side?

• Plotting a graph with GD

  Here it goes. I have been thinking about this for a long time, and havent really been able to put up a proper way to do it yet. I havent implemented anything yet, as im still designing the thing. The idea is that i crawl a website for internal links, i got this settled, its easy, but after the crawling, i end up with an array with lots of links, and how many times those particular link appears on the site that i crawled (and how they're connected). With this huge array, i want to draw a graph somehow. Assuming i can handle the data correctly, the real question here is how i can draw this in a image by the use of the GD library. I figured if theres less than 12 elements, i can align them up on a unit circle spacing them up as a circle and then connecting them accordingly, so anything up to 12 elements shouldn't be a problem, but if theres more than 12, it could be awesome getting them lined up like this Or well, thats just a rough drawing, but i guess its just to prove a point. So i'm here looking for guidance or tips towards getting the math down to getting the stuff lined up in a good way. I have previously made bar-graphs, so i have little experience doing math with GD. If possible, id prefer not using some plotter-library - in the end, it gives me a better understanding on how things are supposed to be.

  I recently installed Apache 2.4 on my local machine, together with PHP 5.4.8 using PHP-FPM. • Problem with apache + ssl: length mismatch error and ocasional bad request

  we migrated a server from slicehost to linode recently, we copied the config from one server to the other. • Apache is reponding a blank white page

  I have the following situation: A site hosted in apache 2.4, with ssl, that works like a charm for a while now, but out of no where, without modifications to the site, apache started serving random blank pages. The workaround this is to delete the cookies of the browser or restart the browser. I've switched the vitualhost to log in debug mode but it didn't got me anywhere.
