  Hi I'm a BA / programmer type doing data analysis on a legacy system. I've been teaching myself SQL to help, but I've appeared to hit upon a problem bigger than my abilities. I have two tables (generalized for simplicity): Table Objects Object_PK Table Components Component_PK Object_FK Component_Type There are 100+ distinct values in Component_Type_Code. Given that any object can have N number of Components, how can I see which Component_Type(s) appear with other Component_Type(s)? For example, the following query tells me what component_types appear with the component_type 'Component_type_1': select component_type_code, count(*) from components where object_fk in ( select object_fk from components where component_type_code = 'component_type_1' ) group by component_type_code I'd like to get a query to show me all connections My apologies for the formatting. Any help is appreciated. I've looked at cube and rollup, but didn't know how to apply to this situtation.

  I have a query that returns one row. However, I want to invert the rows and columns, meaning show the rows as columns and columns as rows. I think the best way to do this is to use a pivot table, which I am no expert in. Here is my simple query: SELECT Period1, Period2, Period3 FROM GL.Actuals WHERE Year = 2009 AND Account = '001-4000-50031' Results (with headers): Period1, Period2, Period3 612.58, 681.36, 676.42 I would like for the results to look like this: Desired Results: Period, Amount Period1, 612.58 Period2, 681.36 Period3, 676.42 This is a simple example, but what I'm really after is a bit more comlex than this. I realize I could produce theses results by using several SELECT commands instead. I'm just hoping someone can shine some light on how to accomplish this with a Pivot Table or if there is yet a better way.

  Hi everyone, I know naming conventions for tables used by plugins generally start with the name of the plugin and then the model pluralized. For example lets say I had a plugin called Poll, with a model also called PollPoll and another model called PollTag then the resulting table names would be poll_polls and poll_tags. They would also have a habtm relationship so what is the convention for that table name? I believe it would poll_poll_polls_poll_tags, although it is a little redundant it makes sense since the first poll_ represents the name of the plugin, while poll_polls and poll_tags relates to the models. Also have any naming conventions changed for plugins in 1.3? Is the above stated correct? Thanks!

• Efficient persistent storage for simple id to table of values map for java

  I need to store some data that follows the simple pattern of mapping an "id" to a full table (with multiple rows) of several columns (i.e. some integer values [u, v, w]). The size of one of these tables would be a couple of KB. Basically what I need is to store a persistent cache of some intermediary results. This could quite easily be implemented as simple sql, but there's a couple of problems, namely I need to compress the size of this structure on disk as much as possible. (because of amount of values I'm storing) Also, it's not transactional, I just need to write once and simply read the contents of the entire table, so a relational DB isn't actually a very good fit. I was wondering if anyone had any good suggestions? For some reason I can't seem to come up with something decent atm. Especially something with an API in java would be nice.

• Maintaining sort order of database table rows

  Say I have at database table containing information about a news article in each row. The table has an integer "sort" column to dictate the order in which the articles are to be presented on a web site. How do I best implement and maintain this sort order. The problem I want to avoid is having the the articles numbered 1,2,3,4,..,100 and when article number 50 suddenly becomes interesting it gets its sort number set to 1 and then all articles between them must have their sort number increased by one. Sure, setting initial sort numbers to 100,200,300,400 etc. leaves some space for moving around but at some point it will break. Is there a correct way to do this, maybe a completely different approach? Added-1: All article titles are shown in a list linking to the contents, so yes all sorted items are show at once. Added-2: An item is not necessarily moved to the top of the list; any item can be placed anywhere in the ordered list.

  I want to run an update query. The query will be run against multiple databases - not every database will have the table. I don't want the update to be attempted if the table does not exist. I don't want any error to be thrown - I just want the update to be ignored. Any ideas? EDIT: just to be clear - the query is executed in an automated deployment - no human interaction possible. EDIT2: the logic to say whether the update should run or not will need to be in the MySql query itself. This is not being run through a command prompt or batch or managed code.

  I need to transform data from one schema into another in an MS Access database. This involves writing queries to select data from the old schema and then inserting the results of the queries into tables in the new schema. The below is an example of what I am trying to do. The SELECT component of the below works fine, but the INSERT component does not work. Can someone show me how to fix the below so that it effectively inserts the results of the SELECT statement into the destination table?   I didn't feel this rule before, but it seems that a binary tree or any tree (each node can have many children but children cannot point back to any parent), then this data structure can be represented as 1 table in a database, with each row having an ID for itself and a parentID that points back to the parent node. That is in fact the classical Employee - Manager diagram: one boss can have many people under him... and each person under him can have n people under him, etc. This is a tree structure and is represented in database books as a common example as a single table Employee.

I declared the column while creating the table as [pollDate date] What I wanted is that this column be set automatically, when the user doesnt enter any value for this column. How do i declare the column to achieve this? Assuming that I have the same declaration as above, how do I enter an empty value. I mean if the column was of type varchar, I would enter empty value as " ". But since it is of type date, I get error when I enter the value as " ". How do I enter empty value for the pollDate column?

• Automated URL checking from a MySQL table

  Okay, I have a list of URLs in a MySQL table. I want the script to automatically check each link in the table for 404, and afterward I want it to store whether the URL was 404'd or not, as well as store a time for last checked. Is this even possible to do automatically, even if no one runs the script? ie, no one visits the page for a few days, but even with no one visiting the page, it automatically ran the test. If its possible, how could I go about making a button to do this?

I am creating a table which will store weekly shift hours for employees. for example: Jon works 9:00am tp 9:00pm Monday , 10:00 AM to 5:00PM on Tuseday etc.... How should i go on designing this table. I thought of 2 options.   Hey, I have two models Users and Roles. I have setup a many to many relationship between the two models and I have a joint table called roles_users. I have a form on a page with a list of roles which the user checks a checkbox and it posts to the controller which then updates the roles_users table. At the moment in my update method I am doing this because I am not sure of a better way: role_ids = params[:role_ids] user.roles.clear role_ids.each do |role| user.roles << Role.find(role) end unless role_ids.nil? So I am clearing all the entries out then looping threw all the role ids sent from the form via post, I also noticed that if all the checkboxes are checked and the form posted it keeps adding duplicate records, could anyone give some advice on a more efficent way of doing this?

  Hi, I am using data grid view to display items as excel spread sheet in VB.NET. I got a table named CostTypes with column names [CostTypeID, CostType] and values [1,External] and [2,Internal] (These are constant but more values can be added to table). I want to create columns with names of the values[External , Internal] in DataGridView. If I use databiding directly I get columns [CostTypeID,CostType] which is not what I am looking for. If some one could explain how to create columns at runtime in datagridview or how to retrieve data from data base using LINQ so that [External , Internal] turn out to be columns that would be great.   Hello A client of mine has had an HD crash an a SQL DB got corrupt : They did not make backups so they have a big problem. When I tried (an ultimate measure) to DBCC-repair I got the following message. Can anybody help me with this ? Server: Msg 8966, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Could not read and latch page (1:872) with latch type SH. sysindexes failed. Server: Msg 8944, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Table error: Object ID 2, index ID 0, page (1:872), row 11. Test (columnOffsets->IsComplex (varColumnNumber) && (ColumnId == COLID_HYDRA_TEXTPTR || ColumnId == COLID_INROW_ROOT || ColumnId == COLID_BACKPTR)) failed. Values are 2 and 5. The repair level on the DBCC statement caused this repair to be bypassed. CHECKTABLE found 0 allocation errors and 1 consistency errors in table 'sysindexes' (object ID 2). DBCC execution completed. If DBCC printed error messages, contact your system administrator.

I have Person table and Employee table, which are related with the foreign key (Person contains basic information, Employee the rest).   I am storing the response to various rpc calls in a mysql table with the following fields: Table: rpc_responses timestamp (date) method (varchar) id (varchar) response (mediumtext) PRIMARY KEY(timestamp,method,id) What is the best method of selecting the most recent responses for all existing combinations of method and id? For each date there can only be one response for a given method/id. Not all call combinations are necessarily present for a given date. • Help with an SQL query on a single (comments) table (screenshot included)

  Please see screenshot Goal: id like to have comments nested 1 level deep The comments would be arranged so that rating of the parent is in descending order the rating of the children comments is irrelevant The left hand side of the screenshot shows the output that Id like. The RHS shows the table data. All of the comments are held in 1 table. Im a beginner with SQL queries, the best I can do is: SELECT * FROM [Comments] WHERE ([ArticleId] = @ArticleId) ORDER BY [ThreadId] DESC, [DateMade] This somewhat does the job, but it obviously neglects the rating. So the above statement would show output where Bobs Comment and all of the children comments are before Amy's and her childrens comments. How can I run this query correctly?
