• Strategies for "Always-Connected" Windows Client Data Architecture

  Hi. Let me start by saying: this is my 1st post here, this is a bit lenghty, and I havent done Windows Forms development in years....with that in mind please excuse me if this isn't directly a programming question and please bear with me as I really need the help!! I have been asked to develop a Windows Forms app for our company that talks to a central (local area network) Linux Server hosting a PostgreSQL database. The app is to allow users to authenticate themselves into the system and thereafter conduct the usual transactions with the PG database. Ordinarily, I would propose writing a webforms app against Mono, but the clients need to utilise local resources such as USB peripheral devices, so that is out of the question. While it might not seem clear, my questions are italised below: Dilemma #1: The application is meant to be always connected. How should I structure my DAL/BLL - Should this reside on the server or with the client? Dilemma #2: I have been reading up on Client Application Services (CAS), and it seems like a great fit for authentication, as everything is exposed via URIs. I know that a .NET Data Provider exists for PostgreSQL, but not too sure if CAS will all work on a Linux (Debian) server? Believe me, I would get my hands dirty and try myself, but I need to come up with a logical design first before resources are allocated to me for "trial purposes"! Dilemma #3: If the DAL/BLL is to reside on the server, is there any way I can create data services, and expose only these services to authenticated clients. There is a (security) requirement whereby a connection string with username and password to the database cannot be present on any client machines...even if security on the database side is quite rigid. I'm guessing that the only way for this to work would be to create the various CRUD data service methods that are exposed by an ASP.NET app, and have the WindowsForms make a request for data or persist data to the ASP.NET app (thru a URI) and have that return a resultset or value. Would I be correct in assuming this? Should I be looking into WCF Data Services? and will WCF work with a non-SQL Server database? • Win CE 6.0 client using WCF Services - Reduce Bandwidth

  We have a Win CE 6.0 device that is required to consume services that will be provided using WCF. We are attempting to reduce bandwidth usage as much as possible and with a simple test we have found that using UDP instead of HTTP saved significant data usage. I understand there are limitations regarding WCF on .NET Compact Framework 3.5 devices and was curious what people thought would be the appropriate way forward. Would it make sense to develop a custom UDP binding, and would that work for both sides? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

• very weird problem concerning date and time in silverlight + ria services

  Hello Friends i'm facing a very weird problem in sliverlight 4 + RIA Services, or maybe it's not weird and i'm just a newbie anyway i hope someone here can help, the problem is the following i've created a function on the server side inside the domain service this function is very simple and has a line in it that adds the server current date and time to the database (it's an HR application and employees should sign in and out thrue it each from it's own pc ) Emp.TimeOut = system.DateTime.now (C# syntax) the weird part is that for some users it always adds 3 hours to the current time(exp if he signes out at 5 it shows 8) and for others it works perfectly. the server and all the stations in the company have exactly the same time settings and the same time zone, and anyway my fucntion is on the server side so it should no be realted to the users time. any ideas why this is happening ? i've bin trying to find out why for days now but with no luck

But still when I am trying to run the application in hosted mode it's giving me 'Error Response: 0' from the server side. According to me it's not able to find the server side in the tomcat. • Concerns with SoapUI Pro when Updating Web Services

  This may unfortunately be a very open-ended question, but a coworker of mine has shared concerns about using SoapUI Pro as our automated regression testing tool primarily on the basis that seemingly trivial WSDL changes can cause headaches for the QA crew. My coworker's particularly concerned that if we update the WSDL, even with a name change, we'll need to touch and update each existing test. As I understand it SoapUI Pro offers a refactoring tool to handle this for you. What are your experiences with SoapUI Pro and updating your web services? Am I missing something?

• How to extend abstract Entity class in RIA Services

  I want to add a bool variable and property to the base Entity class in my RIA services project so that it is available throughout all the entity objects but seem unable to work out how to do this. I know that adding properties to actual entities themselves is easy using .shared.cs and partial classes but adding such properties to the Entity class using similar methods doesn't work. For example, the following code doesn't work namespace System.ServiceModel.DomainServices.Client { public abstract partial class Entity { private bool auditRequired; public bool AuditRequired { get { return auditRequired; } set { auditRequired = value; } } } } All that happens is that the existing Entity class gets totally overriden rather than extending the Entity class. How do I extend the base Entity class so that functionality is available thoughout all derived entity classes?

• Adding Insert Row in tableView

  Hello everyone, I have a tableView that loads its data directly from a Core Data table with a NSFetchedResultsController. I'm not using an intermediate NSMutableArray to store the objects from the fetch results; I basically implemented inside my UITableViewController the protocol method numberOfRowsInSection and it returns the numberOfObjects inside a NSFetchedResultsSectionInfo. id <NSFetchedResultsSectionInfo> sectionInfo = [[fetchedResultsController sections] objectAtIndex:section]; and then I configure the cell content by implementing configureCell:atIndexPath and retrieving object info from the fetchedResultController but right now I have a generic configuration for any object (to avoid complications) cell.textLabel.text = @"categoria"; I also have a NavigationBar with a custom edit button at the right that loads my own selector called customSetEditing. What I'm trying to accomplish is to load an "Insert Cell" at the beginning of the tableView so when I tap it, it creates a new record. I have seen many examples of similar situations in stackoverflow (by the way is an excellent forum with very helpful and nice people) none of the examples seems to work for me. Any ideas?

• Reporting Services Linear Gauge Scale

  I have set up a linear gauge in Reporting Services 2008. What I would like to do is specify my scale interval. The only problem with this is the scale intervals I would like to use are not at constant intervals. For example, say the scale min is $0 and the scale max is $10 000. Depending on the chart I may want an interval marker labelled at $2000, $5000, then $7945. These numbers would be calculated based on percentages of scale max specified in the dataset. I have not been able to figure out how I would go about doing this.

• Grails: GGTS not running on Amazon AWS EC2 anyone else successful?

  Im just curious if anyone has had success trying to run the Groovy Grails tool suite on an Amazon AWS EC2 instance with its display exported into your windows machine. If so, I wanted to know which flavor of linux was used on the EC2. I am not having much success with it on the Amazon Linux but haven't tried their Ubuntu instances yet. I got all the way to getting GGTS installed and getting the display exported but when I launch GGTS I get log errors about libraries missing. This is most likely because I didn't use yum to install it so I am probably missing dependencies but I didn't have a choice its not offered as a yum package. • Hosted Continuous Application Monitoring Services

  Does anybody know of a good service or tool for continuos application monitoring? I'm looking specifically for something that is hosted, so we don't have to worry to much about the fact that the monitoring tool is actually running. Specifically, we have a few e-commerce customers that we would like to provide detailed monitoring services for. We don't want to simply monitor uptime, we'd like to go through the entire checkout process once a day or even more often to ensure everything's working (adding to cart, shipping calculations, payment processing, etc). We've tried site24x7.com but their recording tool just doesn't seem to offer the level of customization we need. Does anybody have any recommendations?

• How to start a windows service on local computer

  I have created a windows service. When I install msi, this service goes to local services, but doesn't start. When i try to start it, it gives this error: Windows could not start this service on Local computer. Error 1053: The service didnot respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion. One more thing is, that when I install msi as a service, it goes to local services, but doesn't start and gives warning that you don't have privileges to start this service.

• Android Google Play Services Error whilst Connecting

  I am attempting to implement the Google Play Services into my Game to add a Leaderboard. However, whenever I try to connect, I get the following error message: I have correctly imported google-play-services_lib into my project, and AdMob is working perfectly. This error message comes up after it tries to login. The account with which I am logging in, is authorized as a Test account so that shouldn't be the issue. There are no error messages in the LogCat window either. All I got was that Error Message from the image. Project hierarchy : I am assuming that simply Extending the Activity from BaseGameActivity should handle everything for me right?

• Fixing predicated NSFetchedResultsController/NSFetchRequest performance with SQLite backend?

  I have a series of NSFetchedResultsControllers powering some table views, and their performance on device was abysmal, on the order of seconds. Since it all runs on main thread, it's blocking my app at startup, which is not great. I investigated and turns out the predicate is the problem: NSPredicate *somePredicate = [NSPredicate predicateWithFormat:@"ANY somethings == %@", something]; [fetchRequest setPredicate:somePredicate]; I.e the fetch entity, call it "things", has a many-to-many relation with entity "something". This predicate is a filter that limits the results to only things that have a relation with a particular "something". When I removed the predicate for testing, fetch time (the initial performFetch: call) dropped (for some extreme cases) from 4 seconds to around 100ms or less, which is acceptable. I am troubled by this, though, as it negates a lot of the benefit I was hoping to gain with Core Data and NSFRC, which otherwise seems like a powerful tool. So, my question is, how can I optimize this performance? Am I using the predicate wrong? Should I modify the model/schema somehow? And what other ways there are to fix this? Is this kind of degraded performance to be expected? (There are on the order of hundreds of <1KB objects.)   This is question more about service architecture strategy, we are building big web system based on rest services on back end. And we are currently trying to build some standard internal to follow while developing rest services. Some queries returns list of entities, for example lets consider we have image galleries retrieving service: /gell_all_galeries, returning next response: <galleries> <gallery> <id>some_gallery_id</id> <name>my photos</name> <photos> <photo> <id>123</id> <name>my photo</name> <location>http://mysite/photo/show/123</location> ...... <author> <id>some_id</id> <name>some name</name> ....... <author> </photo> <photo> ..... </photo> <photo> ..... </photo> <photo> ..... </photo> <photo> ..... </photo> </photos> </gallery> <gallery> .... </gallery> <gallery> .... </gallery> <gallery> .... </gallery> <gallery> .... </gallery> </galleries> As you see here, response quite big and heavy, and not always we need such deep info level. Usual solution is to use or http://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atom elements for each gallery instead of full gallery data: <galleries> <gallery> <id>some_gallery_id</id> <link href="http://mysite/gallery/some_gallery_id"/> </gallery> <gallery> <id>second_gallery_id</id> <link href="http://mysite/gallery/second_gallery_id"/> </gallery> <gallery> .... </gallery> <gallery> .... </gallery> <gallery> .... </gallery> <gallery> .... </gallery> </galleries> The first question, is next: maybe instead we shouldn't even use and types, and just use generic and for all resources that return list objects: <list> <item><link href="http://mysite/gallery/some_gallery_id"/></item> <item><link href="http://mysite/gallery/other_gallery_id"/></item> <item>....</item> </list> And the second question, after user try to retrieve info about some concrete gallery, he'll use for example http://mysite/gallery/some_gallery_id link, what should he see as results? • "didChangeSection:" NSfetchedResultsController delegate method not being called

  I have a standard split view controller, with a detail view and a table view. Pressing a button in the detail view can cause the an object to change its placement in the table view's ordering. This works fine, as long as the resulting ordering change doesn't result in a section being added or removed. I.e. an object can change it's ordering in a section or switch from one section to another. Those ordering changes work correctly without problems. But, if the object tries to move to a section that doesn't exist yet, or is the last object to leave a section (therefore requiring the section its leaving to be removed), then the application crashes. NSFetchedResultsControllerDelegate has methods to handle sections being added and removed that should be called in those cases. But those delegate methods aren't being called for some reason. The number of sections contained in the table view after the update (5) must be equal to the number of sections contained in the table view before the update (6), plus or minus the number of sections inserted or deleted (0 inserted, 0 deleted). with userInfo (null) As you can see, "willChangeContent", "didChangeObject" (moving the object in question), and "didChangeContent" were all called properly. Based on the Apple's NSFetchedResultsControllerDelegate documentation "didChangeSection" should have been called before "didChangeObject", which would have prevented the exception causing the crash. So I guess the question is how do I assure that didChangeSection gets called? Thanks in advance for any help!
