• What are the system requirements for each flavor of Ubuntu Desktop?

  I'm thinking about installing Ubuntu Desktop, but I don't know what flavor is the better for my system. What are the minimum and recommended hardware requirements? What kind of CPU? How much memory? Should I have Hardware Acceleration? What flavor should I use? This is an attempt of a canonical answer. My answers have the "official minimal requirements", the recommended are a mix of official sources and opinion based (along with the answer it's told the source). You can comment or edit if you feel that the information is obsolete or incomplete. Is a good rule of thumb that any system capable to run Windows Vista, 7, 8 x86 OS X will almost always be a lot faster with any Ubuntu flavor even if they are lower-spec than described below.

• Unity environment way too slow in Ubuntu 13.10

  Unity and its apps open too slowly whenever I open one. It takes a while for them to appear completely. Everything works properly when the window is already open. The biggest problem is with the dash: it's SO SLOW when I'm looking for an app although I have removed some lenses. What should I do or what can I do? These issues only occur with Ubuntu 13.04 and 13.10 whereas 12.04 works AMAZNGLY but I have issues when updating a package or installing a new one, that's why I don't opt for that one. Specifications: RAM: 2GB, Processor: Intel® Atom™ CPU N2600 @ 1.60GHz × 4, Graphics card: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.3, 128 bits)

• Coherence Query Performance in Large Clusters

  Large clusters (measured in terms of the number of storage-enabled members participating in the largest cache services) may introduce challenges when issuing queries. There is no particular cluster size threshold for this, rather a gradually increasing tendency for issues to arise. The most obvious challenges are that a client's perceived query latency will be determined by the slowest responder (more likely to be a factor in larger clusters) as well as the fact that adding additional cache servers will not increase query throughput if the query processing is not compute-bound (which would generally be the case for most indexed queries). If the data set can take advantage of the partition affinity features of Coherence, then the application can use a PartitionedFilter to target a query to a single server (using partition affinity to ensure that all data is in a single partition). If this can not be done, then avoiding an excessive number of cache server JVMs will help, as will ensuring that each cache server has sufficient CPU resources available and is also properly configured to minimize GC pauses (the most common cause of a slow-responding cache server).

  I am looking at adopting a skeletal animation format (as prompted here) for an RTS game. The individual representation of each model on-screen will be small but there will be lots of them! In skeletal animation e.g. MD5 files, each individual vertex can be attached to an arbitrary number of joints. How can you efficiently support this whilst doing the interpolation in GLSL? Or do engines do their animation on the CPU? Or do engines set arbitrary limits on maximum joints per vertex and invoke nop multiplies for those joints that don't use the maximum number? Are there games that use skeletal animation in an RTS-like setting thus proving that on integrated graphics cards I have nothing to worry about in going the bones route?

• One Week on New Servers and Everything is Great

  It has been a week since we moved our Geekswithblogs.net System to a new set of load balanced servers and everything has been going great.  I am so amazed at the performance of the new hardware.  On average, we only use less than 5% of the CPU at any given moments or the database and web servers.  I have seen a performance boost in page load as well, but I will have to confirm that with the statistics as they roll in.  This is all in preparation for a new community we are launching with some friends that we will be announcing shortly.  We will be launching a nice little contest for our bloggers as well. • On-board HDMI Audio

  I have tried searching for answers to this issue but have had no luck. My HDMI display is working but I have no audio from the HDMI .There is no option for HDMI under sound preferences hardware or output. Purging and re-installing pulse audio doesn't change anything. I am using the on-board HDMI port on my motherboard, I do not have a PCI graphics card installed. • What's a good open source cloud computing software? [closed]

  In particular, the "cloud" computing that I'm referring to is: I'm going to get some Linux servers. Then I have pretty big computing tasks to do every day. So my goal is to be able to run some shell command to request an "instance" (ie, if a server has 4 CPU, then the computing software will configure that server to have 4 instances, assuming all my tasks are single thread). Ideally, then I can run the following command: ./addjobs somebatchfile where somebatch file contains one command per line ./removejobs all ./listalljobs (ie, everything is done in shell. And the "computing software" can return me the hostname that's available in some environment variable, etc) And that's all I needed. I run into OpenStack.. but it seems too complicated for this purpose (ie, it does all the Imagine sharing stuff, etc).. All I want, is something SIMPLE that manages the Linux boxes for me and I'm just going to run shell commands on them... Is there such open source software? Thanks,

• Login screen won't accept my password

  I recently upgraded to 12.04 from 11.10 and since upgrading have been unable to login to my user profile. The upgrade went okay and I can login to a guest session fine but whenever I try to login to my profile, after entering my password, I just return to the login screen. I've changed my password in Root (passwd 'username')and can log in to tty1 with no issues, it's just in GUI I'm having problems. I'm using a HP dv7 laptop, 32 bit Ubuntu install, Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU P7350 @ 2.00GHz × 2, Nvidia graphics. Any help would be appreciated.

• Very slow system after installing 13.10?

  Just "upgraded" from 13.04 to 13.10 on my Acer C7 Ubuntu'd Chromebook and first thing I noticed is that everything is very slow and unresponsive. Hardly had this on 13.04. Opened system monitor to check processes and I saw that compiz is consistently using 20-80% of my CPU, even on idle. I tried installing Compizconfig, but it doesn't start up at all. This is the final release, not a beta. How can I make it more responsive - like it should be?

• Does Hauppauge WinTVR 900H work with Digital TV in the UK

  I have been trying to sort out my Hauppauge WinTV 900H USB Tuner. Here in the UK, we do not have Analogue TV any more as we are fully converted to digital. I have had this working in Windows a while ago, but am having no joy in Ubuntu 13.04 all I get is a blue screen and no settings for the UK. Can anyone advise me how to set this up on my laptop. I have tried: Does Hauppauge WinTV HVR-900 (r2) [USB ID 2040:6502] work with ubuntu 12.04 LTS? I am using TVTime I have also read this page, which makes me think that this unit can only receive Analogue signals, which are no longer transmitted in the UK (which could be my problem!) Laptop Specifications: Intel® Core™ i3-2350M CPU @ 2.30GHz × 4 Intel® Sandybridge Mobile 6MB RAM Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

• Ubuntu 12.04 crashes on startup for newer versions of Linux, possibly related to WiFi

  My computer gets to the screen with the Ubuntu logo and the orange/white dots, and then the screen goes black, spits out a lot of error messages, and cannot boot. (If it'd be helpful, I can take a photo of my screen in this state.) I've found I can successfully boot if my wireless card is turned off. As soon as I turn it on, my computer crashes with the same black screen of death. I can also successfully boot if I choose "Previous Linux Version" and select a few versions back (I think 3.0.6). Here are some relevant details about my setup: Ubuntu 12.04 Computer: Lenovo x230 Wireless: Realtek RTL8188CE 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter Processor: Intel Core i5-3210M CPU @ 2.50GHz × 4 RAM: 16 GB of RAM Thank you!!!

  I am seeking some ideas for how to build and install software with some parameters. These including target OS, target platform CPU details, debugging variant, etc. Some parts of the install are shared, such as documentation and many platform independent files, others are not, such as 64 and 32 bit libraries when these are separated and not together in a multi-arch library. On big networked platforms one often has multiple computers sharing some large server space, so there is actually cause to have even Windows and Unix binaries on the same disk. My product has already fixed an install philosophy of $INSTALL_ROOT/genericname/version/ so that multiple versions can coexist. The question is: how to manage the layout of all the other stuff?

  I installed Ubuntu 11.04 on one of my systems and I am using the Unity interface. Unity is working quite well so far but I really miss panel applets for net speed, cpu temp, and system monitor. These applets are useful for viewing quick info. Unlike 10.10, there is no other way to get this info onto the panel or unity launcher. There are solutions like screenlets and conky but they don't feel appropriate for a clean desktop look. If you know one then please list out any third party indicators with links so that they can be found.

  Many people suggest to write a program, and then start optimizing it. But I think that when it's coming to multithreading with multicore, a little think ahead is required. I've read about using threads, and experienced it myself during some courses at the university (still a student). The big question is simple, but a bit abstract: What thread related steps in game design do I need to take, before implementation? Now trying to be more specific. Let's say, as an example, that I'm making a small board game (like Monopoly) that I want to be multithreaded. My goal Is that this multithreaded game will exploit the best of the multicore system, lets say 4-6 cores (like in i7 processors). My answer to this question at the moment is, one thread for each of these four basic components: GUI User Input / Output AI (computer rival) Other game related calculations (like shortest path from A to B, or level up status change) I'm not an expert (yet!), and I'm sure there are better answers out there. Any suggestion, answer, different approach will be helpful. Some thoughts: Maybe splitting the main database is a good way.. (or total disaster.. )

• Windows gets progressively slower over time, why doesn't Ubuntu?

  I, and many other previous Windows users notice that the computer seems to get progressively slower over time. I bought a leapfrog crammer only to find it installed process that sat there waiting for me to plug the crammer in so it could run the software. It took up three percent of the CPU twenty-four seven, seven day a week! This is one of the main reasons I left Windows. But, Ubuntu doesn't seem to slow down over time at all. Does Ubuntu allow programs to install background programs like the leapfrog crammer did to sit there like a leech and suck away at resources? Could someone explain why Windows tends to get slower over time, and is Ubuntu vulnrable to this too? Thanks for any help, this is puzzling me.

• Dim (NEARLY blank) laptop screen, secondary screen works - why?

  My laptop screen is (almost) black while my secondary screen is fine. I believe it to be backlight / brightness related. Problem description it starts when I start the laptop system loads and works fine, just screen has problems I can see the screen though very faintly / dimly - it's hard to see anything which ain't very white e.g. starting screen has big Thinkpad logo in white, large font - I can see it, though very dimly second screen works very well Official backligtht debugging: using acpi setting as prescribed there for Thinkpads didn't help I can see an entry in /sys/class/backlight/ and it changes when I press hotkeys for brightness (current backlight power for instance goes up or down) acpi-off didn't helpm neither did acpi_backlight=vendor Hardware data Laptop is Thinkpad Edge with glossy screen. 4 processors, 2 cores, exemplary CPU data from cat /proc/cpuinfo reports Genuine Intel i5 (M 480 @ 2.67GHz). • Unable to mount location, Can't mount file

  I'm a new user to Ubuntu and I have a problem: I had Windows XP in my computer and I had two partitions: C (for system data) and D(for my personal stuff), then, during the Ubuntu installation I chose the Advanced Settings and formated C partition and left D partition intact, went back and chose Install Ubuntu and replace Windows and it installed fine. The problem is that now I open Nautilus and go to Computer, in there it shows my D partition, 640 Hard Disk, but when I try to mount it displays me a message: "Unable to mount location. Can't mount file". I ask you to explain me step-by-step what I need to do because I'm not an advanced user. My computer specs: 2 GiB RAM, Proccesor Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E5400 @ 2.70GHz × 2, Graphics Unknow (It's Nvidia GeForce 220 {1GB} or something), OS type 32-bit, Disk 628.0 GB P.S.: My HDD is internal, I'm not using external Hard Drives. • Problem with the screen resolution on 12.04

  I just installed Ubuntu on my laptop. The screen resolution is stuck in 1024x768. The screen is made for 1280x800. When I run xrandr I get: xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default Screen 0: minimum 800 x 600, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1024 x 768 default connected 1024x768+0+0 0mm x 0mm 1024x768 61.0* 800x600 61.0 1280x800 isn't offered and I get gamma size error. I was going to look into the Xorg.conf file but I couldn't locate it. 1280x800 was displayed in Windows 7 and I think it is being displayed in Grub before Ubuntu starts also. Here are some details about my computer: CPU: Intel atom D2500 1.86GHz Chipset: Intel 945GSE+ICH7M LCD: 14" TFT 16:9 Resolution ratio: 1280*800 Video Card: Intel integrated GMA950 Does anyone know how to fix this?

  YES I have figured out that my laptop overheats while using the internet via an Ethernet port through a broadband connection.Strange isn't it ? Well I need to know WHY ? . I have installed ATI Graphics : Vesa Madison as they appear to be working very fine. Temperature of my i7-hp pavilion dv6 rises from 67degrees to a superhot 85+ and also to 106degrees where my laptop shuts down. When running torrents or Chromium I hardly open 4 Tabs so there is no chance for CPU over-loading due to multiple processes.NEED HELP.And Thank You for your time.
