• Best architecture for a social media app

  Hey guys, Im working on promising project that develops a new social media app for web and mobile. We are at begin defining functionalities. Nevertheless, I'm thinking ahead on architecture. So I'm asking: 1 - Whats the best plataform to develop the core of this aplication that will have a Rest API interface. 2 - Whats the best database that will scale and grow with my application. As far as I researched, these were the answers I found most interesting: For database: Cassandra NoSQL DB, amazing scalabilty, amazing write performance, good read performance (will be improved on 0.6). I think i will choose that one. Zookeer for transactions on Cassandra. I think that 2 technologies rly good for that propose. What do you think guys? On the front end that will serve the REST API, i dont have a final candidate. For this one i have questions based on Perfomance X Scalabilty X Fast Development/Maintenance. Java or .Net As far as I researched, brings the best balance of this requisits. Python, pearl and Rail, has the best (Fast Development/Maintenance), but sux on all other. C or C++ I dont even consider, because its (Fast Development/Maintenance) sux... So what do you guy think about it?

• PHP gettext on Windows

  There's some tutorials out there for gettext (w/ Poedit)... unfortunately, it's mostly for a UNIX environment. And even more unfortunate is that I am running my WAMP server on Windows XP (but I am developing for a UNIX environment) and none of the tutorials can get gettext working properly for me. From the man page (http://us3.php.net/manual/en/book.gettext.php), it appears that it's a different process on a Windows environment. I've tried out some of the solutions in the comments but I still can't get it to work! Please, I've spent many hours on this, hopefully someone can point me in the right direction to get this thing to work! (and I'm sure there are others out there who share my frustration). So far with my setup, I'm only getting output "Hello World!" whereas I should be getting the translated string. • Getting a variable into another class through properties or button tags with Iphone SDK?

  Hello. I have been pounding my head against a wall trying to figure out what I think is a simple thing to do, but I have, so far, been unable to figure it out with the iPhone SDK. I have a view with 4 buttons. When I push the buttons, I have another view called and come up to take over the screen. I want to have a simple variable passed from the old view to the new view. The purpose of this is to know what button was pressed out of the four identical ones. (trying to get an int value of 1 through 4) Here is what I have tried so far: I initially tried to call the variable from the class itself. My understanding was that my new view was only sitting on top of the old view, so it should not have been released. I could not get access to the variable as the variable was said to not be declared. I then tried to create a method that would return the int value. Again, the view class was not seen and was being declared as a "first use" of it. I then attempted to follow another similar post on here that suggested to try and send the button tag number to some part of the new view. I attempted to do this by setting the new views button title but I still cannot figure out a way to code it without coming up with errors. I am just looking for what method would be the best for me to pursue. I have no problem going back and reading the books on Objective-C, but I'm just trying to figure out which way I should concentrate on. Thank you for any insight.

• Is there an easier way with jQuery accordions?

  I've been struggling with a feature I've been trying to create for sometime. The idea here is that the user sees the little thumbnail + headline, as well as the Posted By information. They can then click on the headline to expand to the article or click on the "Comments" link to expand directly to the comments made on the article. Or, if they want they can view comments by clicking on the headline(to expand to the article), then click on View Comments (to expand to the comments). In the end, a modular yet flexible and functional open/close system to view latest news. Here is what I've been working on: (I put all my code in one place so its easier on whomever may look at this to view) http://notedls.com/pointtest.html This is what I'm shooting for, but it's far from what I want ;( It's using the jQuery 1.6 plugin, which 1.8 is out but I'm far from being a master or expert at this and I don't think I could build from the ground up. I've already edited this plugin to get it to work like this, but as you can see, the AUTHOR and Comments start making shit hit the fan ;; It's because the code is calling the "A TAG" for the header; which is the headline. Does anyone know any easier way to achieve what I'm envisioning or possible a way to fix this current code? I'm pretty desperate at this point ;;

• Managing multiple .NET languages in a web application

  I am part of a development team building a new ASP.NET 3.5 web application. Two of us are C# coders, and the other is a VB.NET coder. I know that we can mix languages on a per-project basis, and one can build classes in one language that inherit from classes written in the other language in a different project (which we are already doing), but I can see us getting into a situation where we might well end up with cyclic dependencies between our various project DLLs. Other than simply having a high number of projects (more seperation of concerns into more libraries), how have you managed this situation on your own projects? Note - I believe this question to be different enough from the only similar match I could find (this one) on the basis that we are not wanting to use different languages in order to take advantage of their specific features per se, but rather to make use of what developer resource is available to us (i.e. one dev just happens to be VB.NET only).

• Blank installNotifyURI in OMA Download Descriptors

  People can download content (music, images) for their mobile from my server. Im trying to use the installNotifyURI-tag of the download descriptors specified by OMA, to be able to find out if the download has been successful. When the user has downloaded the item I do get a POST to the url I specified in the installNotifyURI-tag. <installNotifyURIhttp://joynes.se/mytest.php</installNotifyURI Although I never get any status code.   I'm trying to create this script that will check the computer host name then search a master list for the value to return a corresponding value in the csv file. Then open another file and do a find an replace. I know this should be easy but haven't done so much in python before. • TCP: Address already in use exception - possible causes for client port? NO PORT EXHAUSTION

  Hello, stupid problem. I get those from a client connecting to a server. Sadly, the setup is complicated making debugging complex - and we run out of options. The environment: *Client/Server system, both running on the same machine. The client is actually a service doing some database manipulation at specific times. * The cnonection comes from C# going through OleDb to an EasySoft JDBC driver to a custom written JDBC server that then hosts logic in C++. Yeah, compelx - but the third party supplier decided to expose the extension mechanisms for their server through a JDBC interface. Not a lot can be done here ;) The Symptom: At (ir)regular intervals we get a "Address already in use: connect" told from the JDBC driver. They seem to come from one particular service we run. Now, I did read all the stuff about port exhaustion. This is why we have a little tool running now that counts ports and their states every minute. Last time this happened, we had an astonishing 370 ports in use, with the count rising to about 900 AFTER the error. We aleady patched the registry (it is a windows machine) to allow more than the 5000 client ports standard, but even then, we are far far from that limit to start with. Which is why I am asking here. Ayneone an ide what ELSE could cause this? It is a Windows 2003 Server machine, 64 bit. The only other thing I can see that may cause it (but this functionality is supposedly disabled) is Symantec Endpoint Protection that is installed on the server - and being capable of actinc as a firewall, it could possibly intercept network traffic. I dont want to open a can of worms by pointing to Symantec prematurely (if pointing to Symantec can ever be seen as such). So, anyone an idea what else may be the cause? Thanks

• Response.Redirect in a COM+ Object Called from Classic ASP Page

  Basically we moved from IIS 5 to IIS 7 and I am trying to update some of our old COM objects to .NET by rewriting them in C#. What I am have so far is a Classic ASP page calling the COM+ object and then I am trying to do a simple redirect within the COM+ object (this is just for testing purposes, it's not what the object will do eventually). My problem/question is, why does the redirect call not work properly? Am I doing something wrong or can you not redirect within a COM+ object? All that happens is a blank white page comes up and if I check the IIS logs, I see no errors. • Obtaining touch location for a uiscrollview touch

  I have a uiscrollview as an element of a uiscrollviewcontroller, along with other view objects. The image scrolls and zooms as expected, when the scrollView is the top subview. However, I also need to get the screen location of the touch, in particular when there is no scroll action. (I understand the location may change during a scroll, but that's not important.) I haven't found a way to do that. In the scrollviewcontroller implementation I have customized all of the standard methods that should do this: "touchesShouldBegin...", "touchesBegan:...", "touchesEnded:...", and so on. As far as I can tell, none of these are being called during a touch event when the scrollView is the top subview. I've tried setting the delayContentTouches property to both YES and NO, and that doesn't seem to make a difference. As an alternative, I've tried putting a UIView as the top subview and then tried passing the touches to the now underlying scrollView. In this configuration, the standard methods are called and I can get the touch location, but I haven't found a mechanism for the touches to be passed to the scrollView so scrolling occurs. Doing something like sending the touch messages to the specific scrollView, or to "super" or just sending them to nextResponder doesn't do it. It seems I can make the scroll work or find the location of the touch but not both, depending on what the "top" subview is. I suspect this is trivial, but after two weeks of struggling, it's time to eat my embarrassment for not being able to do this seemingly simplest of things. I've read all of the related questions here on stackoverflow, tried most if not all of the suggestions, and so far, nothing has worked. I've looked through the various links and references suggested by the answers, including Apple's documentation, but none have pointed out the gap in my understanding. Any ideas would be appreciated.

• Audio playback, creating nested loop for fade in/out.

  Hi Folks, First time poster here. A quick question about setting up a loop here. I want to set up a for loop for the first 1/3 of the main loop that will increase a value from .00001 or similar to 1. So I can use it to multiply a sample variable so as to create a fade-in in this simple audio file playback routine. My problem is I'm trying to figure out a way to loop the variable 'fade' so it either increases or decreases to 1, so as I can modify the output variable. I wanted to do this in say 3 stages: 1. From 0 to frames/3 to increace a multiplication factor from .0001 to 1 2. from frames 1/3 to frames 2/3 to do nothing (multiply by 1) and 3. For the factor to decrease again below 1 so as for the output variable to decrease back to the original point. How can I create a loop that will increase and decrease these values over the outside loop?

• Solving iPhone/iPad out of memory issues

  I have a strange issue where I'm scrolling through a paged UIScrollView which displays the pages of a PDF document (using Quartz 2D and CATiledLayer). When I page through memory allocation looks fine with it going up with a few initial pages and then keeping it steady as it obviously releases the memory kept for earlier pages. Upon hitting page x (not a certain PDF page or a certain number per se) memory usage goes from a couple of megs to 308 megs and the app crashes. So my question is: how to best try to find what's causing this? The object alloc tool in instruments shows the memory as simply going to malloc. (in huge chunks).

• How do I get Java to use my multi-core processor?

  I'm using a GZIPInputStream in my program, and I know that the performance would be helped if I could get Java running my program in parallel. In general, is there a command-line option for the standard VM to run on many cores? It's running on just one as it is. Thanks! Edit I'm running plain ol' Java SE 6 update 17 on Windows XP. Would putting the GZIPInputStream on a separate thread explicitly help? No! Do not put the GZIPInputStream on a separate thread! Do NOT multithread I/O! Edit 2 I suppose I/O is the bottleneck, as I'm reading and writing to the same disk... In general, though, is there a way to make GZIPInputStream faster? Or a replacement for GZIPInputStream that runs parallel? • How to make a small flash swf with ComboBox in Actionscript 3?

  I have a pure Actionscript 3 project, using flash.* libraries, compiles down to about 6k (using mxmlc). Program handles about 1k shapes, a few sprites, a sockets connection, works great (tastes less filling). Now, how would I add a ComboBox control without incurring excessive bloat? More specificially, I would like to keep the size under 100k. So far I have tried: Adobe mx.controls ComboBoxexample - simple mxml example compiles to 200+k both on my main Linux Box using mxmlc and in Windows using Flash Builder 4 Yahoo Astra - uses mx libraries underneath(so as bloated as Adobe?), plus does not contain exact ComboBox Keith Peter's MinimalComps - seems small, but far from providing ComboBox functionality SPAS (Swing Package for Actionscript) - compiles to 130k, but alpha version of ComboBox does not let me adjust height... asuilib - compiles to 40k, unfortunately this ComboBox does not provide for scrolling items...if it does not fit on screen no way to scroll to it Now my questions: Is there a way to lower size for projects importing mx.controls ? Maybe there is a way to fix SPAS or asuilib ComboBoxes? Perhaps, there are some other libraries which provide a ComboBox(or DropList)?

• Help porting javascript function to jQuery - learning tool

  I am just learning jQuery and I wanted to see what I could do with the function below. This function adds or removes css classes to create a pull down menu (it is in fact Stu Nicholl's well known pull down menu). But I'm not getting very far (I've been learning jQuery for approximately an hoour now, so my DOM traversal isn't quite up there yet). I am curious to see how neat and elegant it can become using jQuery, and thought I'd see what you guys could come up with. • latex: curly braces outside math

  Hi, I am producing some latex beamer slides (but I think it is not a beamer specific question per se). I have the following: \begin{itemize} \item Issue1 \item Issue2 \item Issue3 \end{itemize} now I want to have a right curly brace (i.e. '}') behind the items spreading over issue1 and issue2. And of course I want to write something behind that curly brace I a perfect world I would write something like: \begin{itemize} \left . \item Issue1 \item Issue2 \right \\} One and Two are cool \item Issue3 \end{itemize} This does not work because I am not in a math environment and I can not put the whole snippet inside a math environment because itemize would not work in that case. • F#, Linux and makefiles

  I intend to distribute an F# program as both binary and source so the user has the option of recompiling it if desired. On Windows, I understand how to do this: provide .fsproj and .sln files, which both Visual Studio and MSBuild can understand. On Linux, the traditional solution for C programs is a makefile. This depends on gcc being directly available, which it always is. The F# compiler can be installed on Linux and works under Mono, so that's fine so far. However, as far as I can tell, it doesn't create a scenario where fsc runs the compiler, instead the command is mono ...path.../fsc.exe. This is also fine, except I don't know what the path is going to be. So the full command to run the compiler in my case could be mono ~/FSharp-2.0.0.0/bin/fsc.exe types.fs tptp.fs main.fs -r FSharp.PowerPack.dll except that I'm not sure where fsc.exe will actually be located on the user's machine. Is there a way to find that out within a makefile, or would it be better to fall back on just explaining the above in the documentation and relying on the user to modify the command according to his setup?

• Why does presentModalViewController not always work?

  My application requires data from a server in order to run. The first thing it does is displays a view controller (LoadingViewController) that is responsible for checking if the data is saved to my PersistentStoreCoordinator. If the data isn't cached locally, it gets it from my server and caches it, and posts a notification that the LoadingViewController is listening for. When that notification comes through, LoadingViewController presents the application's MainViewController using the presentModalViewController with a flip animation. So far, so good... no errors. However, if the application loads and determines the data IS cached - the presentModalViewController does not work and the main application view never appears. No errors. I've even gone as far as adding a button to the Loading view that executes the same code when pressed and the damn thing works. I'm suspicious it has something to do with the timing of it all but I'm clueless as to what I can do to ensure the view is displayed with that flipping animation if the data is already cached locally. Any suggestions?

• visual studio 2005 is deleting the .svn folder in the bin\Debug directory - how to prevent this?

  For some reason I need to check in a couple of files in the bin\Debug directory. For the past few weeks, I am noticing a strange behaviour from VS2005. Every time I recompile the code, it is deleting the .svn folder in the bin\Debug directory and hence svn is showing "obstructed" error. Even svn clean up doesn't help due to missing .svn folder. Is there any settings on VS2005 to prevent this? In the first place, why it is deleting .svn folder? This thread http://svn.haxx.se/tsvnusers/archive-2008-10/0019.shtml discuss about it but no useful solution to prevent this from happening. Any other suggestions?

• Map Reduce Frameworks/Infrastructure

  Map Reduce is a pattern that seems to get a lot of traction lately and I start to see it manifest in one of my projects that is focused on an event processing pipeline (iPhone Accelerometer and GPS data). I needed to built a lot of infrastructure for this project, in fact it overweighs the logic code interacting with it by 2x. Some of the components I built where EventProcessors (with in- and output plus buffering, timing etc.), multiplexers and aggregators. This leads me to my question what the "common" required infrastrucutre for map reduce is. Since I am working with .Net a lot I can see map reduce infrastructure built into the Framework and language constructs. Functional languages support this paradigm per se. It seems every language can be used with map reduce, some have better support than others, others again are built around that concept (e.g. Go). And there are Frameworks like Apache Hadoop to support map reduce.

  Hi, I'm trying to create a subclass of JButton or AbstractButton that would call specified .actionPerformed as long as the mouse is held down on the button. So far I was thinking of extending JButton, adding a mouse listener on creation (inside constructor) and calling actionPerformed while the mouse is down. • Why does my GridSplitter not work at all?

  I'm migrating a WinForms app to WPF. Everything has gone well so far except in relation to my attempts to use GridSplitter which I can never seam to make resize anything at run-time. To make sure it wasn't just my code I attempted to compile the GridSplitter sample from LearnWPF.com and it doesn't appear to work either. I am expecting to see the standard resize cursor when I mouse over the splitter which doesn't happen, and as far as I can see there is no other visual representation of the splitter in the window either.   I need to distinguish between a Queens style address, from a valid ranged address, and an address with a unit#. For eg: Queens style: 123-125 Some Street, NY Ranged Address: 6414-6418 37th Ln SE, Olympia, WA 98503 Address with unit#: 1990-A Gildersleeve Ave, Bronx, NY. In the case of #3, A is a unit# at street address 1990. THe unit# might be a number as well, for eg: 1990-12. A ranged address identifies a range of addresses on a street, and not a unique deliverable address. So, the question is, is there an easy way to identify the Queens style address from the other cases?

• Getting Started with Ruby & Ruby on Rails

  Some background: I'm a jack-of-all traits, one of which is programming. I learned VB6 through Excel and PHP for creating websites and so far it's worked out just fine for me. I'm not CS major or even mathematically inclined - logic is what interests me. Current status: I'm willing to learn new and more powerful languages; my first foray into such a route is learning Ruby. I went to the main Ruby website and did the interactive intro. (by the way, I'm currently getting redirected to google.com when I try the link...it's happening to other websites as well...is my computer infected?) I liked what I learned and wanted to get started using Ruby to create websites. I downloaded InstantRails and installed it; everything so far has been fine - the program starts up just fine, and I can test some Ruby code in the console. However my troubles begin when I try and view a web page with Ruby code present. Lastly, my problem: As in PHP, I can browse to the .php file directly and through using PHP tags and some simple 'echo' statements I can be on my way in making dynamic web pages. However with the InstantRails app working, accessing a .rb or .rhtml page doesn't produce similar results. I made a simple text file named 'test.rb' and put basic HTML tags in there (html, head, body) and the Ruby tags <%= and % with some ruby code inside. The web page actually shows the tags and the code - as if it's all just plain HTML. I take it Ruby isn't parsing the page before it is displayed to the user, but this is where my lack of understanding of the Ruby environment stops me short. Where do I go from here?
