• SmartSVN - Unable to create new repository profile

  I have just installed SmartSVN on this fedora system. The application starts (on running ./smartsvn.sh) with its usual UI but many things are not working. Creating New repository profile Trying to create a new repository profile (Repositories- Repository Profiles- Add) An Error occurred while processing an SVN command - Cannot connect to 'svn+ssh://192.168.0.103': There was a problem while connecting to 192.168.0.103:22 Quick Checkout Trying to do Quick Checkout (less configuration) An Error occurred while processing an SVN command - Malformed XML. Some Observations When I run the smartsvn.sh file like this:- ./smartsvn.sh It shows this in the console - Warning: /bin/java does not exist Could not lock /root/.smartsvn/_lock_ Switched to running instance I was using SmartSVN in another system before this where it was working. There too, it was showing the warning like Warning: /bin/java does not exist but this part was not showing:- Could not lock /root/.smartsvn/_lock_ Switched to running instance I have only JRE installed in both the systems and not JDK. • Bug with Set / Get Accessor in .Net 3.5

  I spent a few hours scratching my head on this one... So I thought I would blog about it in case someone else had the same headache. Assume you have a class, and you are wanting to use the INotifyPropertyChanged interface so that when you bind to an instance of the class, you get the magic sauce of binding to do you updates to the UI. • Configure SQL Server to Allow Remote Connections

  Okay. This post isn’t about configuring SQL to allow remote connections, but wait, I still may be able to help you out. "A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 – Could not open a connection to SQL Server)" I love this exception. It summarized the issue and leads you down a path to solving the problem.  I do wish the bit about allowing remote connections was left out of the message though. I can’t think of a time when having remote connections disabled caused me grief.  Heck, I can’t ever remember how to enable remote connections unless I Google for the answer. Anyway, 9 out of 10 times, SQL Server simply isn’t running.  That’s why the exception occurs.  The next time this exception pops up, open up the services console and make sure SQL Server is started.  And if that’s not the problem, only then start digging into the other possible reasons for the failure.

• SQL Server 2008 R2 upgrade fails on upgrade rule check

  I'm trying to upgrade an evaluation instance of SQL Server 2008 to a fully licensed instance of SQL Server 2008 R2. I made it most of the way through the installer, but I'm getting stopped at the Upgrade Rules page - the SQL Server Analysis Services Upgrade Service Functional Check is failing. The specific error I get: Rule "SQL Server Analysis Services Upgrade Service Functional Check" failed. The current instance of the SQL Server Analysis Services service cannot be upgraded because the Analysis Services service is disabled or not online. Please start the service and then run the upgrade rules check again. Simple enough - just need to start the service. Here's where it gets troublesome. When I open Services and go to start the SQL Server Analysis Services (MSSQLSERVER) service, it provides me the following message: The SQL Server Analysis Services (MSSQLSERVER) service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs. Trying from the command line as Administrator yields: PS C:\Windows\System32 net start MSSQLServerOLAPService The SQL Server Analysis Services (MSSQLSERVER) service is starting... The SQL Server Analysis Services (MSSQLSERVER) service could not be started. The service did not report an error. More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 3534. I've tried changing the logon setting of this service to Administrator, a user with admin privileges, and both the Local System and Network Service accounts - nothing works. In addition, when I look at the service through the SQL Server Configuration Manager (also run as Administrator), attempting to change the logon setting for the service results in the message: The server threw an exception. [0x80010105] I have no need for analysis services themselves - all I need is for this one service to be running long enough to do the R2 upgrade, then it can shut down again. Any thoughts on how to get the Analysis Services service running? Update: Checking the event log, I found an error logged to the Application log from the MSSQLServerOLAPService. It has event ID 0, task category (289), and says: The service cannot be started: XML parsing failed at line 1, column 4: Unrecognized input signature.

• forward ssh ports on EC2

  I have an SSH server on a private subnet within an EC2 vpc listening for ssh on port 9022 I also have a nat instance (standard Amazon EC2 nat) on a public instance. I would like to forward incoming SSH connections (port 9022) to my nat to the internal server (port 9022). I tried this, but it didn't work: sudo iptables -t nat -I PREROUTING -p tcp -i eth0 --dport 9022 -j DNAT --to-destination 10.0.2.11:9022 I verified that 10.0.2.11 is listening on port 9022. (I can telnet). I verified my security group allows incoming port 9022. I verified that /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward is 1. What am I missing? Edit: Turns out this was correct after all. I had a mistake in my security group.

  Hi, In the company I work for we are heavy users of vmware machines. Almost all our projects are developed inside a virtual environment up to the point where we have to deploy them into a production system. While in development, some colleagues of mine deleted the redo log files for Oracle in the hopes of gaining some free space. Now they are unable to start the database instance. Is there a way of generating a fresh new redo log so that the instance can be started? This is urgent and even though I'm currently googling for an answer I have yet to find it. Thanks in advance.

• windows 7 file explorer preview window and password protected word docs

  When using the windows 7 explorer with the preview pane open you get a little preview of a file when you click on it. This includes Word and Excel spreadsheets etc. My problem is if the Word doc is password protected clicking on it in explorer automatically asks for the password to display its preview. It does this if you single or double clicking on it. You then get an empty Word instance running (which allows it to display the preview) and another instance of Word with your actual file and you're asked for the password twice in total. This is annoying and untidy. Is there a way of stopping the preview pane from wanting to display password protected documents and thus not asking for the password to display a preview?

• Bone creation in XNA Content Pipeline

  I'm trying to manually create a ModelContent instance that includes custom Bone data in a custom ContentProcessor in the XNA Content Pipeline. I can't seem to create or assign manually created bone data due to either private constructors or read-only collections (at every turn). The code I have right now that creates a single triangle ModelContent that I'd like to create a bone for is: MeshContent mc = new MeshContent(); mc.Positions.Add(new Vector3(-10, 0, 0)); mc.Positions.Add(new Vector3(0, 10, 0)); mc.Positions.Add(new Vector3(10, 0, 0)); GeometryContent gc = new GeometryContent(); gc.Indices.AddRange(new int[] { 0, 1, 2 }); gc.Vertices.AddRange(new int[] { 0, 1, 2 }); mc.Geometry.Add(gc); // Create normals MeshHelper.CalculateNormals(mc, true); // finally, convert it to a model ModelContent model = context.Convert<MeshContent, ModelContent>(mc, "ModelProcessor"); The documentation on XNA is amazingly sparse. I've been referencing the class diagrams created by DigitalRune and Sean Hargreaves blog, but I haven't found anything on creating bone content. Once the ModelContent is created, it's not possible to add bones because the Bones collection is read-only. And it seems the only way to create the ModelContent instance is to call the standard ModelProcessor via ContentProcessorContext.Convert. So it's a bit of a catch-22. The BoneContent class has a constructor but no methods except those inherited from NodeContent... though now (true to form) maybe I've realized the solution by asking the question. Should I create a root NodeContent with two children: one MeshContent and one BoneContent as the root of my skeleton; then pass the root NodeContent to ContentProcessorContext.Convert? Off to try that now...

  I'm using Powershell to check last backup times across all our sqlserver databases. • uWSGI and Nginx python file handling

  I've been trying to figure out how to propertly utilize uWSGI with Nginx and have hit a bit of a design roadblock. I'm trying to figure out how my python files should be accessed via uWSGI. I've been able to find 3 different ways to do so: Create a uWSGI process for each python file and then create locations in nginx that pass to each uWSGI process. Create one instance of uWSGI and create a master python file that handles all the different requests. Create one instance of uWSGI and setup dynamic applications I'm coming from LightTPD where I simply setup rewrites to point at the different python files. I feel like 3 is the closest to that but uWSGI says that it is not the recommended way of going about it.

  To make up for yesterday's documentation faux pas, when I referenced Kan's blog as a source for the debug feature over Leslie's fine official documentation that had come out some time before Kan's blog. Apologies again Leslie! I noticed another new feature that I was unaware of in the New Features guide for 10.1.3.4.1. The ability to remove the BI Publisher header from the user interface so you can get this: instead of this. Useful? If you wanted to host BIP inside another application such as a portal or custom app, you can make the BIP UI app look much more integrated. By default you still get our 'blue' look and feel' but I have documented else where how you can change that. For instance, now you can have BIP hosted inside a BIEE instance and provide access to all the reports a user might wish to run with very little effort rather than picking and choosing what to bubble up to the dashboard. How do you do it? Get on over to the New Features guide and find out, there are some other goodies there too. Note to self, RTFM!

  I have a test application written in C#/ASP.NET that I've developed using Visual Studio 2008 Professional/.NET 3.5 which connects to a local SQL Server 2008 Express instance. I upgraded the development machine to Visual Studio 2010 Professional maintaining .NET 3.5 and everything in the development environment continues to work correctly. Upon deployment of the new app to an internal staging machine, that app cannot connect to its local SQL Server 2008 Express database. I get the customary "server not found" error: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible... Does something need to be upgraded on the staging machine to be able to host a Visual Studio 2010/.NET 3.5 application?

• Package management fails in update-manager with gzip problems and compilation errors. U12.04LTS

  Similar to but not the same as Package management system corrupted. Cannot install or remove packages. U12.04LTS (an earlier problem) with package management system. Followed all of L. D. James suggestions in his answer to no avail. This time as well as the gzip error I am also getting compilation errors. The difference may be due to a lack of compilation in my earlier problem so it may be the same error. The packages concerned are enumerated in the output from update-manager below. Also included below that is the output from apt-get -f install apt-get autoremove gives same output. Tried update without SSL updates - 9 to install and got "Unhandled Error in aptdaemon". Output number 3 below. One at a time - output 4 - is for firefox, first in the list of packages. Falls over at libssl1.0.0 despite deselection of it from update ... Tried apt-get install --reinstall dpkg which succeeded, apt-get install --reinstall tar and apt-get install --reinstall gzip both of which failed at libssl1.0.0 as ever. (as suggested by Subv3rsion elsewhere in this forum) Now cannot apt-get update with complete success even after changing server and apt-get clean - output number 5 below ... 1).   I try to use rockmongo, to connect to our cluster. Our setup is a setup of two shards each consisting of a replicaset. I try to connect to the mongos instance and while rockmongo connects I get an error when trying to list the dbs: Execute failed:not master function (){ return db.getCollectionNames(); } This has something to do with the replica sets and everybody points to: $MONGO["servers"][$i] = array("replicaSet" => "xxxxx"); This is all fine, but I have two replicasets and as far as I understand I should connect to the mongos instance and not directly to the members of the set. So how does one use rockmongo to connect to a mongo sharded setup with replicasets?

  I am doing log shipping between two Amazon EC2 instances running Windows Server 2008 R2 with SQL Server 2008 R2 standard edition. Both the instances are in the same domain and I can access the shared folders between the instances. The SQL server service account, agent service account are all running under a domain account. When I activate log shipping (with stand by mode restore in secondary server), the initial backup gets restored on the secondary. After that the backup operation is getting failed and i get the following error message: *** Error: Could not retrieve backup settings for primary ID 'xxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-4d772cd7337e'.(Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.LogShipping) *** *** Error: Failed to connect to server IP-0A7653F2.(Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo) *** ****** Error: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server.******** **The server was not found or was not accessible.   I am trying to map subdomain to amazon ec2 with elastic IP. I already mapped the www.xxxexample.com to my shared hosting by giving the dns server name (ns1.justhost.com). And I created a many subdomains using the cpanel of shared hosting. Shared hosting is working fine. Amazon route53 is a paid service. So I dont want to use that service. I want to map my subdomain points to amazon ec2 instance and main domain already primarily mapped to shared hosting. I tried from the below example, nothing worked for me, getting my domain name to point to my amazon ec2 instance Can anybody help me to get rid of this issue?? Thanks in advance.

• Connect to MS Sql 2008 on local VM

  I have a test machine. Server 2008 with Hyper V MSSQL 2008 Enterprise Lets call it MACHINE A on the VM it is as well Server 2008 with another MSSQL 2008 Ent Call it VM B I setup a DB on MACHINE A then backed it up and restored following the prepare database for mirroring instructions on MSDN onto VM B. I used to be able to connect to the VM B Instance from the main test server (MACHINE A) but now I cannot for some reason. It cannot seem to find the instance at all even when I browse network databases. I can ping the VM from any computer on the network and access its shares so I know it is discoverable. Just the end of a long day maybe I am missing something here.

• unix command to verify span of word in text

  What unix command(s) can I use to determine the line span that a word appears in text? The "span" being equal to the line number of the last instance of a word minus the line number of the first instance of the word. 1| unix is on two lines 2| once above, and once below 3| unix In the example above the "span" of 'unix' would be 2 (3-1). So far I've been trying to make use of grep -n but I don't think that grep is powerful enough. Maybe some use of sed or awk? Thanks!

• Google bots are severely affecting site performance

  I have an aggregate site on a linux server that pulls in feeds from a universe of about 2,000 blogs. It's in Wordpress 3.4.2 and I have a cron job that is staggered to run five times an hour on another server to pull in the stories and then publish them to the front page of this site. This is so I didn't put too much pressure all on one server. However, the Google bots, which visit a few times every hour bring the server to its knees in the morning and evenings when there is an increase in traffic on the site. The bots have something like 30,000 links to follow at this point. How do I throttle the bots to simply grab the new stories off the front page and stop there? EDIT- Details of my server configuration: The way we have this set up is the server that handles all the publishing is an unmanaged instance via AWS. It mounts the NFS server and connects to the RDS to update content, etc. You get to this publishing instance via a plugin that detects the wp-admin link and then redirects you into there. The front end app server also mounts the NFS and requests data from the RDS. It is the only one that has the WP Super Cache on it.... The OS is Ubuntu on the App server and the NFS runs CentOs. The front end is Nginx and the publishing server is Apache.
