• Very slow Windows 7 on Thinkpad T61

  I have a very strange problem with my fresh install of Windows 7 Profesional, 64bits on my Lenovo Thinkpad T61 : The overal performance is very slow, the disk is constantly spinning, even without any program running (after boot, no other programs installed). The boot process is very slow itself (4-5 minutes). I mention that the laptop was fine on XP until the upgrade. Thanks ! Additional info (as requested by the comments) : 2GB RAM Yes, I added all the manufacturer (Lenovo) drivers and updates (using the utility provided by Lenovo) Tried with both 32 and 64 bits editions. The 32 bits one is performing a little better, but not very usable either. The hdd has enough space (20 GB or so) The problem is still present on a fresh install, so no recycle bin emptying or unistall programs (there aren't any except plain 7) would help. I'm not a newbie, so no obvious causes are left unchecked

• Another "Trouble copying music files from HD to 16GB thumb drive"

  I have a brand new HP Quad Core - 6GB Ram - running 64-bit Windows 7. Running Norton Internet 2010. I try copying music files from HD to 16 GB thumbdrive and get blue screen after a few files have transfered over to thumbdrive. Computer blinks once and boom - blue screen and then reboots. This is really aggravating. I stopped anti-virus, pulled other USB attached devices - still does same thing. Any solutions out there?

• Getting BootMgr not found errors repeatedly on Win7 x64

  So here is the basic configuration of the box: Primary RAID 1 (Mirror, Bootable): 2x 300GB WD SATA drives AMD Phenom Quad Core x64 @2.2 ASUS M3N78 Pro Board 4GB RAM Win 7 Ultimate Additionally, this box is a Host OS for several CentOS Boxes via VirtualBox. The box runs like a champ but, for whatever reason, everytime I restart the machine I get a BootMgr not found error when the box tries to boot. I pop in my Win DVD, select 'Repair Windows' then 'Fix Start Up Problems' and everything works fine...once. When I restart the box again I have to go back through this process. Any ideas on what is going on?

• Why is Firefox so slow and heavy?

  For some reason, when I go to links the pages seem slow and heavy. It also has a lot of lag spikes between page loads. Basically it seems to freeze then load it all at once fast. I'm currently using Firefox 25. But when I use the same Chrome version, it seems to be very fast and smooth page loading. The CPU it takes on average is about 400,000k. • How do I change the NGINX user?

  I have a PHP script that creates a directory and outputs an image to the directory. This was working just fine under Apache but we recently decided to switch to NGINX to make more use of our limited RAM. I'm using the PHP mkdir() command to create the directory: mkdir(dirname($path['image']['server']), 0755, true); After the switch to NGINX, I'm getting the following warning: Warning: mkdir(): Permission denied in ... I've already checked all the permissions of the parent directories, so I've determined that I probably need to change the NGINX or PHP-FPM 'user' but I'm not sure how to do that (I never had to specify user permissions for APACHE). I can't seem to find much information on this. Any help would be great! (Note: Besides this little hang-up, the switch to NGINX has been pretty seamless; I'm using it for the first time and it literally only took about 10 minutes to get up and running with NGINX. Now I'm just ironing out the kinks.)

• recommendations for a lightweight linux distribution for a test server

  I'm planning on setting up a test server to experiment with some application servers (tomcat/jboss/...) and with some portals. Now the machine I've set aside for this is lightweight CPU/GPU wise(Atom D510, 4 gigabyte ram, 500 GiB hdd, onboard GPU). But it should suffice for most things, I'm more interested in the stability of JBoss/Tomcat for my purposes than the stability. However I'm having a bit of trouble picking an appropriate distribution size/performance/setup time wise/security wise since it seems I can't sneeze without another distribution popping up. I've been thinking about going for Fedora since I've read that that distribution has been optimized for Atom, but I'm not really familiar with it. My experience with Linux has mostly been limited to Ubuntu and some tinkering with puppylinux. I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty using the command line. I'm not planning on starting a discussion per se, mostly the pros/cons that people have encountered with some distributions

• Windows 7 clean install, freezes when starting programs

  Hello Everyone, I have a problem on a brand new Windows 7 Lenovo T510 intel I5/4gb ram. When I got the Laptop, right off the bat i noticed that it would freeze up often on th most simple tasks. After a while I got fed up and reinstalled. All that is installed currently is AVG/Firefox/Office. I Rebooted after installing those things and when I try to open Firefox it freezes just trying to open. Ive tried a few other things and it freezes all the time. Any Ideas what it could be?

• Testing a Virtualisation of a Debian Server (vmWare vSphere probably)

  I'm soon getting access to a powerful root-server (quad-core, 16gb ram, 1gbit connection) where gameservers (like minecraft,counterstrike etc.) for different customers should be setup. My plan is to use programs such as vmWare vSphere to create some virtual machines for each customer. Inside such a virtual machine I'll setup the gameserver and maybe some kind of ftp server when its needed. Now that I'm kinda new to virtualisation of servers I want to test this local on my Desktop Computer. Is it possible to create a virtual machine of debian using vmWare Player on my Windows desktop computer and then install vmware vSphere in this VM to create multiple VM's inside that VM ? Or do I really need to install Debian on my desktop computer. (I want to use the time during installations etc. to work a bit at my windows installation) Some tips on virtualising debian servers are also appreciated :)

  Im trying to move my exchange mailbox store to a new partition and i keep running into an error message saying: "cannot copy insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service." The server is a Dell Poweredge 2850 with Dual Xeon Processors @ 3.00GHz and 4GB of ram. Running Win Server 2K3 R2 SP2 with Exchange 2K3 Standard. The Store is around 55GB any ideas. • Browsing is much slower on one PC wired to the same router - why?

  Wife is not happy. It takes about 5 seconds to open a google window, versus about 1 second on the faster computer which is about 3 years old itself. Yes, it is an older computer (5 -6 years old, I'd guess), surely with less RAM, but for simple browsing, should it matter? Both are hardwired to the same Netgear Rangemax router. Both use fixed IP addresses. Both are XP. Both have about 8 feet of cable to the router. I have the fastest service my cable provides. Probably irrelevant but ...two newer MACs are connected wirelessely during the summer and they are even faster, but I think that's the difference in browsers. If you could point me to a list of process of elimination steps that would be most appreciated. Thanks Dean

• Bad HD video deinterlacing processing

  I have Ubuntu 12.04 32-bit with Unity. My system configuration is: CPU: Core 2 Quad Q6600 (2.4 GHz) RAM: 8192 Mb DDR2 Kingston Video: Palit GeForce GTX 260 216 SP, and my screen resolution is 1680x1050. I also have Window 7 Ulitimate installed, and I can see the same files in Media Player Classic without any horizontal lines. I've installed vdpau driver, NVIDIA drivers 304.51, and MPlayer 2 (within SMPlayer). I've disabled "Sync to VBlank" option in CCSM (because in other way, by default, MPlayer process use about 50-60 percents of my processor load), tried to swich between different deinterlace options in SMPlayer, used "-vc ffh264vdpau,ffmpeg12vdpau" (without quotes) parameters for MPlayer, switched to "Ubuntu 2D", but, finally, have no results. Any suggestions? How must I to set up MPlayer?

• Virtual MS Sql Server not consuming enough CPU

  We have a Win2008 server 32 bit running as a virtual machine under ESX server. It has 6 CPU cores of 2Gz each and 4GB ram. It's running MS Sql Server 2008 R2 only. Problem: The server is heavily loaded and responds slowly. From windows taskmanagers point of view, it really looks overloaded, CPU wise. However, our external "cloud manager" says it's only using 2.5GHz worth of CPU-cycles in the cluster. I/O times looks "good". We have already tried to set the SQL servers number of working threads from 0(auto) to 256, to no effect. How to tune the VM host, guest or SQL to use all of it's alotted resources? Does it sound possible att all?

• Computer temporarily freezes and then resumes

  This happens on ALL operating systems (7, Ubuntu, etc.). What happens is everything for 1-3 seconds becomes unresponsive, I then hear what sounds like my other internal hard drive 'spinning up', and then viola everything is responsive again. Note: Already ran SMART tests, no issues at all. I think issue is that the HDD spins down and when need it gets 'turned-on' (OS settings turn off HDD's after 20 mins of inactivity) and because my pagefile is on the other HDD it causes OS to temporarily freeze. • Ultra-lightweight web browser?

  Are there any good super-lightweight graphical web browsers out there? I'd like to be able to browse the web on an old PC, but the mainstream crop of browsers is just too heavy, and I don't want to resort to something like Lynx. There must be something decent out there that'll fit in 16 or 32MB of RAM comfortably. 100% standards compliance isn't necessary, but I'd like something that supports the most widely used parts of CSS and JavaScript. The goal is to get 98% of sites usable in a nice, graphical format.

  considering this rig : i7 2600K 8GB RAM Corsair Vengeance kit 10-9-10-27 @1866 HD 4870 PSU Corsair AX 1200 I recently upgraded to a HD 6970 and I am getting the following - not so nice screens : http://imageshack.us/g/213/1000142z.jpg/ Had anyone any similar trouble at all? I am thinking that the card is DOA but could it also be the Mobo? Since I am in the BIOS I can't think how the mobo could be the problem. HD 4870 works perfect btw regardless of what I throw at it. • Dell Windows 7 DVD includes IE9, where to find IE8?

  It appears as though we can now only get a 64 bit installation of windows 7 to come with IE9, and I cannot find an installer for IE 8 for it. This presents a problem, as I am building a new machine for a developer, but the company does not support IE9 yet, and all development needs to be able to be run on IE8. I would rather have them on a 64 bit version of windows so they can have more than 4GB of RAM (can get IE8 on 32 bit win 7). Does anyone know how to get IE 8 on a new 64 bit version of win 7?

  Ok, so ive been looking around, trying to learn and understand the way that ram works. Ive gotten one answer that said "The addressing is best for 2 sticks, and when you use 4; it slows down" Another answer said something like: Theres bank/channel interleave that makes the memory read like one stick Also I read something about the memory density also being a factor. I dug further and found out that theres a higher speed limit on my board for 2 sticks vs 4, so now im trying to put an image in my head of how and why, and... pfft. Can anyone explain, or recommend a resource that would answer these questions?

• Nagios remote monitoring: NRPE Vs. SSH

  We use Nagios to monitor quite a few (~130) servers. We monitor CPU, Disk, RAM and a few other things on each server. I've always used SSH to run the remote commands, purely because it requires little to no additional config on the remote server, just install nagios-plugins, create the nagios user and add the SSH key, all of which I've automated into a shell script. I've never actually considered the performance implications of using SSH over NRPE. I'm not too bothered about the load hit on the Nagios server (It's probably over-speced for what it does, it's never been over 10% CPU), but we run each remote check every 30 seconds and each server has 5 different checks performed. I assume SSH requires more resources for each check but is there a huge difference? (I.E. enough of a difference to warrant the switch to NRPE). If it's any help, we monitor a mix of physical servers (Normally with 8, 12 or 16 physical cores) and Amazon EC2 medium/large instances.

• Upgrading from 32 to 64 Bit Windows 7, without losing program installations/games

  I recently built a new computer and put the wrong installation of Windows on (32 bit), meaning I cannot use all of my RAM. I would like to upgrade to the 64 bit version, though I already have downloaded many programs and games which would total to around 30 GB give or take. I don't have the kind of data usage with my ISP to re-download this much data again, until next month (total GB will be higher as time goes on). I know there is Windows Easy Transfer, but it is not so much my data itself I'm worried about, it is more having to re-download and install a bunch of games and applications. Is it possible to perform an upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit without this loss?

• Tuning MySQL to consume less memory

  I have a VM which has 2GB Ram, (full specs) And I am setting up a site which has one table in particular with over a million records. There's little or no usage of this particular database (perhaps once or twice a day) but simply running mysql grinds the whole server to a halt. I've looked through the top results but nothing is really denting the CPU however the memory seems to be the issue. The site isnt even live of taking requests yet. the memory situation looks like this: # free -m total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 2006 1880 126 0 3 53 -/+ buffers/cache: 1823 183 Swap: 2047 345 1702 Are there any good pointers to tune mysql to stop hogging the system memory? I would like to buy a hardware for that and i am trying to understand if i should buy a desktop and host the webserver on that or do i have to buy some used server from ebay and host on it.   I have two Varnish servers and I plan to add more varnish servers. I am using a nginx load balancer to divide traffic to these varnish servers. To utilize maximum RAM of each varnish server, I need that same request reaches same varnish server. Same request can be identified by one GET parameter in the request URL say 'a' In a normal code, I would do something like- (if I need to divide all traffic between 2 Varnish servers) if($arg_a % 2 == 0) { proxy_pass varnish1; } if($arg_a % 2 == 1) { proxy_pass varnish2; } This is basically doing a even / odd check on GET parameter a and then deciding which upstream pool to send the request. My question are- What is the nginx equivalent of such a code. I dont know if nginx accepts modulas Is there a better/ efficient hashing function built in with nginx (0.8.54) which I can possibly use. In future I want to add more upstream pools so I need not to change %2 to %3 %4 and so on Any other alternate way to solve this problem

• HDD not detected whenever first power on (detected at BIOS level)

  I am using Asus P8H61-M LX Motherboard with latest version of BIOS: 4401 One SATA-3 Western Digital Black Series 1.5TB is attached to SATA port 0 A Samsung 22x DVDRW SATA drive attached to SATA Port 1. ps/2 Logitech mouse and keyboard. CPU is i3 with DDR3 8Gb RAM. no other devices are installed. My problem is that when I turn on the computer, the WD HDD is not detected. ie cannot be booted. I have to press ctrl+alt+del in order to get it detected. I'd used the WD data lifeguard software to scan the HDD, the smart status is OK, the surface scan does not show any error at all. Where did I do wrong? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
