I want also make a premise, i have used both theese js frameworks and i love it and i know, that there are a lot of good js frameworks around, maybe better then this two; but, as you know we need to be perfomant and quickly by doing our works, so i want keep this two, that are the most famous and therefore have a great community support! now, if you are going to say me, that the choise depends on what i'm going to do!? then i can think, hey, in the end they are both javascript and they have almost the same methods and functions and for achieve a task they needs almost the same lines of code! • Correct Interactive Website System Design Concepts / Methods?

  Hi all, I hope this question isn't too open ended, but a nudge in the right direction is all I need! I am currently building an online accounting system - the idea is that users can register, log in, and then create customers, generate invoices and other documents and eventually print / email those documents out. I am a Java programmer but unfortunately haven't had too much experience in web projects and their design concepts... This is what I have got thus far - A Tomcat web server which loads Spring. Spring handles my DAO's and required classes for the business logic. Tomcat serves JSP's containing the pages which make up the website. To make it interactive I have used JavaScript in the pages (jQuery and its AJAX calls) to send and receive JSON data (this is done by posting to a page which calls a handleAction() method in one of my classes). My question is, am I tackling this project in the right way? Am I using the right tools and methods? I understand there are literally countless ways of tackling any project but I would really love to get feedback with regards to tried and tested methods, general practices etc. Thanks in advance! • Why is Lua considered a game language?

  I have been learning about Lua in the past month and I'm absolutely in love with the language, but all I see around that is built with lua are games. I mean, the syntax is very simple, there is no fuss, no special meaning characters that makes code look like regex, has all the good things about a script language and integrates so painlessly with other languages like C, Java, etc. The only down-side I saw so far is the prototype based object orientation that some people do not like (or lack of OO built-in). I do not see how ruby or python are better, surely not in performance ( http://shootout.alioth.debian.org/gp4/benchmark.php?test=all&lang=lua&lang2=python ). I was planning on writting a web app using lua with the Kepler framework and Javascript, but the lack of other projects that use lua as a web language makes me feel a bit uneasy since this is my first try with web development. Lua is considered a kids language, most of you on stackoverflow probably only know the language because of the WoW addons. • Teach Markup or use a WYSIWYG editor?

  When it comes to WYSIWYG editors WYSI rarely WYG. The problem I always have is when people paste in formatted text from word. Ideally, what I'm looking for is a way for people to input text into the document while at the same time teaching them structure... I just don't know if that's a realistic goal ( compared to cut n' paste ) I'm curious if people have found using something other than WYSIWYG editors ( take SO, for example ) has worked for REAL WORLD USERS. I'm not talking about programmers, developers and experience internet users... I'm talking about your average user. I'd be interested in best practices when it comes to getting users to enter content... and I'd love it if someone could point me to some good editors/examples. there are lots of choices when it comes to WYSIWYG ( ckEditor, FreeTextBox, TinyMCE ) but I don't hear a lot about SO-like techniques. Does adding that small barrier scares users away? Is it too difficult to teach people to mark up their text? Is it easier to teach them html? Is a BBCode implementation a good idea? What are some Pros/Cons to wysiwyg/markup. What approach have others used?

• Which SCM/VCS cope well with moving text between files?

  We are having havoc with our project at work, because our VCS is doing some awful merging when we move information across files. The scenario is thus: You have lots of files that, say, contain information about terms from a dictionary, so you have a file for each letter of the alphabet. Users entering terms blindly follow the dictionary order, so they will put an entry like "kick the bucket" under B if that is where the dictionary happened to list it (or it might have been listed under both B, bucket and K, kick). Later, other users move the terms to their correct files. Lots of work is being done on the dictionary terms all the time. e.g. User A may have taken the B file and elaborated on the "kick the bucket" entry. User B took the B and K files, and moved the "kick the bucket" entry to the K file. Whichever order they end up getting committed in, the VCS will probably lose entries and not "figure out" that an entry has been moved. (These entries are later automatically converted to an SQL database. But they are kept in a "human friendly" form for working on them, with lots of comments, examples etc. So it is not acceptable to say "make your users enter SQL directly".) It is so bad that we have taken to almost manually merging these kinds of files now, because we can't trust our VCS. :( So what is the solution? I would love to hear that there is a VCS that could cope with this. Or a better merge algorithm? Or otherwise, maybe someone can suggest a better workflow or file arrangement to try and avoid this problem?

• Flash - Uploading to and Downloading from localhost

  I have an online flash application that acts as a front end for a server application built in delphi. The server can be installed/used on a remote computer or a personal version can be downloaded and the Flash app pointed at localhost to use it. However, Flash has issues with using the POST and GET functions on the localhost, which makes uploading data files and downloading results files difficult. To get past the difficulty with downloading results files I'm planning to just have the server app serve the results file as an attachment and have the Flash app open the address of the file up in another browser window using external interface. First off, is this likely to cause similar security issues? I.E. Flash will see "localhost" in the external interface call and stop it from working the same as when I try to use POST/GET functions with localhost? Secondly, for upload this seems just a bit little trickier, I'm planning on doing something similar, having flash use external interface to open a php script for a file upload. Is this feasible and, again, will Flash still have security issues? Lastly, if anyone knows how to get flash to execute POST and GET functions with localhost addresses, I'd love to have that information to avoid all this jumping through hoops.

• Pros and cons of MPMoviePlayerController versus launching UIWebView to stream movie

  I have a client who has video content for the web in Flash format. My task is to help them show the videos in an iPhone app. I realize that step one is to get these videos into the appropriate Quicktime format for the iPhone. Then I'm going to have to help the client figure out how or where to host these files. If that's tricky I assume they can be hosted at YouTube. My chief concern, though, is which approach to take to stream the video. What are the pros and cons of MPMoviePlayerController versus launching UIWebView with the URL of the stream? Is there any difference? Is one of them more or less forgiving? Is one of them a better user experience? Any gotchas I might expect to run into? I'm assuming playing video is pretty easy on the iPhone. Is it reasonable to try both and have one available as a fallback, or would that be a waste of time? I'm trying to schedule this out a bit, so I'd love to hear real-world experiences from anyone who's done this.

• What should be the "trunk" development, or release

  I have the unfortunate opportunity of source control via Borland's StarTeam. It unfortunately does very few things well, and one supreme weakness is its view management. I love SVN and come from an SVN mindset. Our issue is post production release we are spending countless hours merging changes into a "production support" environment. Please do not harass me this was not my doing, I inherited it and am trying to present a better way of managing the repository. It is not an option to switch to a different SCM tool. Current setup Product.1.0 (TRUNK, current production code, and at this level are pending bug fixes) Product.2.0(true trunk anything checked in gets tested, and then released next production cycle, a lot of changes occur in this view) My proposal is going to be to swap them, have all development be done on the trunk (Production), tag on releases, and as needed create child views to represent production support bug fixes. Production Production.2.0.SP.1 I can not find any documentation to support the above proposal so I am trying to get feedback on whether or not the change is a good idea and if there is anything you would recommend doing differently.

• Is functional GUI programming possible?

  I've recently caught the FP bug (trying to learn Haskell), and I've been really impressed with what I've seen so far (first-class functions, lazy evaluation, and all the other goodies). I'm no expert yet, but I've already begun to find it easier to reason "functionally" than imperatively for basic algorithms (and I'm having trouble going back where I have to). The one area where current FP seems to fall flat, however, is GUI programming. The Haskell approach seems to be to just wrap imperative GUI toolkits (such as GTK+ or wxWidgets) and to use "do" blocks to simulate an imperative style. I haven't used F#, but my understanding is that it does something similar using OOP with .NET classes. Obviously, there's a good reason for this--current GUI programming is all about IO and side effects, so purely functional programming isn't possible with most current frameworks. My question is, is it possible to have a functional approach to GUI programming? I'm having trouble imagining what this would look like in practice. Does anyone know of any frameworks, experimental or otherwise, that try this sort of thing (or even any frameworks that are designed from the ground up for a functional language)? Or is the solution to just use a hybrid approach, with OOP for the GUI parts and FP for the logic? (I'm just asking out of curiosity--I'd love to think that FP is "the future," but GUI programming seems like a pretty large hole to fill.)

• Magento Set Grid to Filter Automatically by Current Day using Existing Datetime Column in Grid

  In Magento I'm creating a custom module and would love to be able to filter automatically by the datetime column so that the intial grid listing shows only entities related to "todays" date. Here is my datetime column: $this->addColumn('ts', array( 'header' => $hlp->__('Activated'), 'align' => 'left', 'index' => 'ts', 'type' => 'datetime', 'width' => '160px', )); I'm think there should be a way for me to just add a filter to the collection like so: $now = Mage::getModel('core/date')->timestamp(time()); $dateTime = date('m/d/y h:i:s', $now); $collection = Mage::getModel('mymodule/items')->getCollection() ->addFieldToFilter('ts', $dateTime); But this doesn't work? Am I using the wrong filter? My "ts" field in the database is a "datetime" field, but the default magento "From: " - "To:" date range selectors don't use hours, minutes, seconds. Any ideas? • PHP strtotime() looks like it is expecting a Euro format

  I've been using PHP's strtotime() method to accept a date field on a form. I love how powerful it is, in how it will accept "Tomorrow", "Next Thursday", or (supposedly) any date representation and convert it to the Unix timestamp. It's been working great -- until yesterday. Someone entered "2-4-10" and instead of logging Feb 4th, 2010, it logged April 10, 2002! So it expected Y-M-D instead of M-D-Y. I thought maybe the problem was just using a 2-digit year, so we tried again with "2-4-2010". That logged April 2nd, 2010! At that point I just don't understand what strtotime() is doing. PHP.net says it expects a US English date format. Why then would it assume D-M-Y? Is there a way around this? Or do I have to stop using strtotime()? Note: I just now did a test. When you use slashes instead of hyphen/dashes, it works fine, even with 2/4/10. Why on earth does that matter? And if that's all it is, should I just run str_replace("-", "/", $input) on the form input before passing it to strtotime()?

• Overriding deep functions in javascript

  I'm quite new to javascript but have undertaken a task to get better aquainted with it. However, I am running into some problems with jQuery. The following javascript is the code that is in a third party jQuery plugin and I would love to be able to override the funFunction() function here to do my own implementation. Is this possible, if so, how can I do it? I've been doing a fair amount of searching and have tried a number of methods for overriding the function using things like: jQuery.blah.funFunction = funtion() { alert("like this"); }; Main code: (function($) { $.extend( { blah: new function() { this.construct = = function(settings) { //Construct... stuff }; function funFunction() { //Function I want to override } } }); })(jQuery); For those further interested I am trying to override tablesorter so that the only way a user can sort a column is in ascending order only. Edit: There is a wordpress installation that uses WP-Table-Reloaded which in turn uses this plugin. I don't want to change the core code for this plugin because if there was ever an update I would then have to make sure that my predecessor knew exactly what I had done. I've been programming for a long time and feel like I should easily be able to pick up javascript whilst also looking at jQuery. I know exactly what I need to do for this, just not how I can override this function.

• Silverlight Vs. WPF Vs. Winforms What is good for specifically my purpose?

  I am about to start a new Windows applications and the contenders for the platform are: Windows Forms WPF Silverlight Now my experience with WPF at least in my last application was not very encouraging (the app failed to run on the deployment machines and I had to re-do it in Winforms). So my confidence is shaken here. My app is for mass-distribution (the last version had some 100,000+ installations). So I want to make absolutely sure that my users will be able to use it and enjoy it without any problems. I would love to create a nice interface, going the next step like a Flex or Silverlight, iPhone app, with animations and effects. So I would really like to go with WPF or Silverlight if I can. My needs are Good support for visuals and animation effects. Support for database connectivity. Support for printing (Is there an equivalent of PrintDocument in Silverlight) Must not suffer from deployment troubles. Silverlight is universal, but does it have printing support and good controls toolset? WPF has printing support and a nice toolset, but can I depend on it? Winforms is dated already and is not so impressive, but should I go with it anyway? Your advice would be appreciated

  I am implementing a simple RoR webpage that collect emails from visitors and store them as objects. I'm using it as a mini-project to try RoR and BDD. I can think of 3 features for Cucumber: 1. User submits a valid email address 2. User submits an existing email address 3. User submits an invalid email My question is, for scenarios 2 and 3, is it better to handle this via the controller? or as methods in a class? Perhaps something that throws errors if an instance is instantiated in sceanrio 2 or 3? Implementation is below, love to hear some code reviews in addition to answers to questions above. Thanks! • Any HTTP proxies with explicit, configurable support for request/response buffering and delayed conn

  When dealing with mobile clients it is very common to have multisecond delays during the transmission of HTTP requests. If you are serving pages or services out of a prefork Apache the child processes will be tied up for seconds serving a single mobile client, even if your app server logic is done in 5ms. I am looking for a HTTP server, balancer or proxy server that supports the following: A request arrives to the proxy. The proxy starts buffering in RAM or in disk the request, including headers and POST/PUT bodies. The proxy DOES NOT open a connection to the backend server. This is probably the most important part. The proxy server stops buffering the request when: A size limit has been reached (say, 4KB), or The request has been received completely, headers and body Only now, with (part of) the request in memory, a connection is opened to the backend and the request is relayed. The backend sends back the response. Again the proxy server starts buffering it immediately (up to a more generous size, say 64KB.) Since the proxy has a big enough buffer the backend response is stored completely in the proxy server in a matter of miliseconds, and the backend process/thread is free to process more requests. The backend connection is immediately closed. The proxy sends back the response to the mobile client, as fast or as slow as it is capable of, without having a connection to the backend tying up resources. I am fairly sure you can do 4-6 with Squid, and nginx appears to support 1-3 (and looks like fairly unique in this respect). My question is: is there any proxy server that empathizes these buffering and not-opening-connections-until-ready capabilities? Maybe there is just a bit of Apache config-fu that makes this buffering behaviour trivial? Any of them that it is not a dinosaur like Squid and that supports a lean single-process, asynchronous, event-based execution model? (Siderant: I would be using nginx but it doesn't support chunked POST bodies, making it useless for serving stuff to mobile clients. Yes cheap 50$ handsets love chunked POSTs... sigh)

• How to get debugging of an App Engine application working?

  I've got 10+ years in C/C++, and it appears Visual Studio has spoilt me during that time. In Visual Studio, debbuging issimple: I just add a breakpoint to a line of code, and as soon as that code is executed, my breakpoint triggers, at which point I can view a callstack, local/member variables, etc. I'm trying to achieve this functionality under App Engine. I assume that is possible? All the searching I've done to this point has led me to using Pydev in Eclipse. As best I can tell, I am successfully launching my simple 'hello world' program in Debug mode. But the IDE doesn't even seem to have an option to set a breakpoint? I must be missing something. I've googled long and hard about this, but am having no luck. Most results trace back to the same old threads that don't deal directly with my issue. Can anyone shed some light on how you get basic debugging setup using Pydev/Eclipse with App Engine? Alternatively, if there's an easier way to debug App Engine than using Pydev/Eclipse, I'd love to hear about it. Thanks in advance.

• Finding usage of jQuery UI in a big ugly codebase

  I've recently inherited the maintenance of a big, ugly codebase for a production website. Poke your eyes out ugly. And though it's big, it's mostly PHP code, it doesn't have much JS, besides a few "ajaxy" things in the UI. Our main current problem is that the site is just too heavy. Homepage weighs in at 1.6 Mb currently, so I'm trying to clean some stuff out. One of the main wasters is that every single page includes the jQuery UI library, but I don't think it's used at all. It's definitely not being used in the homepage and in most pages, so I want to only include the where necessary. I'm not really experienced with jQuery, i'm more of a Prototype guy, so I'm wondering. Is there anything I could search for that'd let me know where jQuery UI is being used? What i'm looking for is "common strings", component names, etc For example, if this was scriptaculous, i'd look for things like "Draggable", "Effect", etc. Any suggestions for jQuery UI? (Of course, if you can think of a more robust way of removing the tag from pages that don't use it without breaking everything, I'd love to hear about it) Thanks!! Daniel

  I'm just starting to learn Xpath, I'm trying to write a line of code that will select all of the actors in EACH movie parent (through Java!). Below, I have an example of one movie, but there are multiple <Movie> elements, each with <Actor> elements. <Movie Genre = 'Other'> <Title>Requiem For A Dream</Title> <ReleaseYear>2000</ReleaseYear> <Director>Darren Aronofsky</Director> <Actor Character = 'Sara Goldfarb'>Ellen Burstyn</Actor> <Actor Character = 'Harry Goldfarb'>Jared Leto</Actor> <Actor Character = 'Marion Silver'>Jennifer Connelly</Actor> <Actor Character = 'Tyrone C. Love'>Marlon Wayans</Actor> </Movie> Currently, I can only select the first <Actor> element of each <Movie> element -- is it possible to select all of them without using a for loop? • django powering multiple shops from one code base on a single domain

  Hey, I am new to django and python and am trying to figure out how to modify an existing app to run multiple shops through a single domain. Django's sites middleware seems inappropriate in this particular case because it manages different domains, not sites run through the same domain, e.g. : domain.com/uk domain.com/us domain.com/es etc. Each site will need translated content - and minor template changes. The solution needs to be flexible enough to allow for easy modification of templates. The forms will also need to vary a bit, e.g minor variances in fields and validation for each country specific shop. I am thinking along the lines of the following as a solution and would love some feedback from experienced django-ers: In short: same codebase, but separate country specific urls files, separate templates and separate database Create a middleware class that does IP localisation, determines the country based on the URL and creates a database connection, e.g. /au/ will point to the au specific database and so on. in root urls.py have routes that point to a separate country specific routing file, e..g (r'^au/',include('urls_au')), (r'^es/',include('urls_es')), use a single template directory but in that directory have a localised directory structure, e.g. /base.html and /uk/base.html and write a custom template loader that looks for local templates first. (or have a separate directory for each shop and set the template directory path in middleware) use the django internationalisation to manage translation strings throughout slight variances in forms and models (e.g. ZA has an ID field, France has 'door code' and 'floor' etc.) I am unsure how to handle these variations but I suspect the tables will contain all fields but allowing nulls and the model will have all fields but allowing nulls. The forms will to be modified slightly for each shop. Anyway, I am keen to get feedback on the best way to go about achieving this multi site solution. It seems like it would work, but feels a bit "hackish" and I wonder if there's a more elegant way of getting this solution to work. Thanks, imanc

• NSFetchedResultsController is driving me crazy

  Hi everyone. i've been building an app since 1 month using NSFetchedResultsController and i was testing the app on the 3.1.2 SDK. The poblem is that i've been using NSFetchedResultsController everywhere in my app and was working on the 3.1.2 version of the SDK, now my client say that i should make it compatible with the 3.0 version and the deadline is almost there. But is crashing everytime i change an object handled by the contoller, the application is crashing with very weird errors. The problem occure when removing the last object in a section and when a change make an object love to another section. I've been using a sample code from "More iPhone 3 Development Tackling iPhone SDK 3" by Dave Mark and Jeff LaMarche. I've also included some changes from link text Here is a sample output of the console when the application is crashing. * Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInternalInconsistencyException', reason: 'Invalid update: invalid number of sections. • How do I Extend Blogengine.Net to collect statistics of visitors?

  I love BlogEngine. But from what I can se it does not collect the standard information about the visitors I would like to see (referrer, browser-type and so on). When I log in as Admin I have a menu item named "Referrer". I can choose a weekday and then I'll be presented with 1 or 2 rows with "google.com 4 hits, "itmaskinen.se 6 hits" and so on, But that's not what I want to se, I want to se where my visitors come from, country, IP if possible, how many visitors and so on. If someone of you are familiar with Blogengine.Net and can point me in the right direction to where I would put my own log-code or if you know any visitor-statistic-extension that can do it for me, I would be really happy to know. I prefer an extension, because if I make changes myself to BlogEngine it may break later updates I install.   I love the idea of historical debugging in VS 2010. However, I am really disappointed that unmanaged C++ is left out. IntelliTrace supports debugging Visual Basic and C# applications that use .NET version 2.0, 3.0, 3.5, or 4. You can debug most applications, including applications that were created by using ASP.NET, Windows Forms, WPF, Windows Workflow, and WCF. IntelliTrace does not support debugging C++, script, or other languages. Debugging of F# applications is supported on an experimental basis. (editorial) [This is really poor support in my opinion. .NET is less in need of this assistance than unmanaged c++. I an getting a little tired of the status of plain old C++ and its second-class status in the MS tools world. Yes, I realize it is probably WAAY easier to implement this with .NET and MS are pushing .NET as the future, and yes, I know that C++ is an "old" language, but that does not diminish the fact that there are lots of C++ apps out there and there will continue to be more apps built with C++. I sincerely hope MS has not dropped C++ as a supported developer tool/language- that would be a shame.] Does anyone know if there are plans for it to support C++?

  I'm looking for a simple commons method or operator that allows me to repeat some String n times. I know I could write this using a for loop, but I wish to avoid for loops whenever necessary and a simple direct method should exist somewhere. Someone reading my code has to figure out what I am doing in that for loop. Even if it is commented and has meaningful variables names, they still have to make sure it is not doing anything "clever". Programmers love to put clever things in for loops, even if I write it to "only do what it is intended to do", that does not preclude someone coming along and adding some additional clever "fix". They are very often easy to get wrong. For loops that involving indexes tend to generate off by one bugs. For loops often reuse the same variables, increasing the chance of really hard to find scoping bugs. For loops increase the number of places a bug hunter has to look.
