  • Named my RPi 512MB @jerpi_bilbo

    To keep our multiple Raspberry Pi boards apart from each other, I've now named my RPi Model B w/512MB: "jerpi_bilbo", which stands for Java Embedded Raspberry Pi - Bilbo (named after the Hobbit from the J.R.R. Tolkien stories). I also, set up a Twitter account for him. You can follow him at: @jerpi_bilbo He's self-tweeting, manual prompted so far (using Java Embedded 7.0 and twitter4j Java library). Works great! I'm setting him up to be automated self-tweeting soon, so watch for that... Here's a pointer to the open source twitter4j Java library: download here Just unzip and extract out the twitter4j-core-2.2.6.jar and put it on your Java Embedded classpath.     I have a thread (class implementing runnable, called AnalyzeTree) organised around a hash map (ConcurrentMap slicesMap). The class goes through the data (called trees here) in the large text file and parses the geographical coordinates from it to the HashMap. The idea is to process one tree at a time and add or grow the values according to the key (which is just a Double value representing time).     I am interested in a way to have private cloud which would host Glassfish (or Tomcat) server. Which option from Eucalyptus, Openstack or Nimbus would be best to deploy java applications on it? Or maybe there is something other and I am looking wrong at the problem? The way I imagine this, that I should have some shared storage that I could expand by introducing new nodes to this cluster and have easy management for glassfish instances: something like virtual machines images that I can start and stop on demand and that image is shared among nodes. I don't need concrete step-by-step solution here but guidelines how this should be done are very welcome.

  • How to reliably take Java Heap Dumps?

    My team is running into difficulties when trying to take good heap dumps triggered by OutOfMemoryErrors. For specific reasons we are currently taking the dumps with jmap called from a bash script instead of using the HeapDumpOnOutOfMemoryError flag. We're using a 64-bit 1.6 JVM with a heap size around 3 GB. Our heap dumps fail 90% of the time (guesstimate). Is there anything we can do to improve our odds of getting a clean heap dump we can use to troubleshoot memory problems? I have read that jmap had major issues in Java 1.4 but that those issues should be mostly addressed now.

  • Java 6.0 Virtual Machine re-caches application on every load

    I have a Java application which is loaded and cached by the JRE and for most users it only needs to cache once unless the application software has changed. However, I have one computer that caches the entire application every time they load it. It is not the version of the JRE, I have that running on other machines. It also works on this machine if logged in as a local admin, just not as a standard user. Does anybody have any ideas on what might be causing this?

    Using Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox browsers on Ubuntu 9.10, I am unable to get any sound out from Java (version 6 update 15) on Runescape or WebSDR. I'm only interested in getting WebSDR working and Runescape was the only other web applet I knew would have sound. Sound does work in a test applet I downloaded when run from the command line so it seems to be a web specific issue. Anyone else encountered or solved this or a similar issue? Are there any better applets out there that I can use to test my sound?

  • Java and Tomcat issue

    All, At the end of my teather with this and really would appreciate any pointers. I have a system that was installed with Tomcat 5.5.9 and JRE 6 update 13. My issue is that someone has come along and installed tomcat 6 and JRE 5. By this simple action they have destroyed the apps that were originally running on the machine. I have tried to remove the tomcat and java install and from what I can see it has all been removed. My issue, I am now trying to re-install the oringinal app, but this installer now throughs up a file location error and will not re-install the apache part of the installer. Can anyone advise of any hidden location were the apache software may have installed components. This is all installed on Windows Server 2003 R2. Many thanks for your help in advance.
