  • VPS hosting for a social network

    - by Jana
Hi, I've developed a social network and I've been using shared hosting for that since it was launched. With that I wasn't able to send emails in bulk in cases like "newsletters" and "invitations to join my site". Plus most importantly most of the mails I send ended up in user's SPAM list.I'm planning to move into VPS as it may not have limits added. I'm wondering what's the cheapest VPS host available. I'm not pretty much familiar with Linux commands and seeking cPanel to do the work for me. Will the following configuration suit for a "new" social network like mine which has a less load? 1000Mhz Guaranteed 512MB Guaranteed RAM 20GB (RAID) Disk Space 1000GB/month Bandwidth 2 IP(s) & 5 Backups Semi Managed Thanks in advance

  • How to start a service at boot time in ubuntu 12.04, run as a different user?

    - by Alex
I have a server ClueReleaseManager which I have installed on a Ubuntu 12.04 system from a separate user (named pypi), and I want to be able to start this server at startup. I already have tried to create a simple bash script with some commands (login as user pypi, use a virtual python environment, start the server), but this does not work properly. Either the terminal crashes or when I try to ask the status of the service it is started and I am logged in as user pypi ...? So, here the question: What are the steps to take to make sure the ClueReleaseManager service properly starts up on boot time, and which I can control (start/stop/..) during runtime, while the service is running from a user pypi? Additional information and constraints: I want to do this as simple as possible Without any other packages/programs to be installed I am not familiar with the Ubuntu 12.04 init structure All the information I found on the web is very sparse, confusing, incorrect or does not apply to my case of running a service as a different user from root.

  • GNU Screen Draw Lag

    - by Daeden
I like using screen with multiple splits. I usually like 3 sections Resource Monitoring using HTop Text Editor using VIM Command line using Bash My issue is that, when I am doing something that writes a good deal of text to STDOUT like running Make and if I am focused on that section, Screen lags on me. So much so, that the other sections no longer update and screen is not responsive to commands like CTRL-A + TAB. I'm not entirely sure what the problem is, but it appears to have something to do with the cursor location which blinks wildly while this is happening. I'm aware that using the vertical split functionality of Screen can lead to lag, but is this the cause? If so, is there a way to fix it aside from redirecting STDOUT?

  • how to remotely setup powershell to accept Enter-PSSession

    - by user1399195
I have some computers I'm trying to remotely execute powershell commands but I'm running into some snags. For one thing, the computers do not have Enable-PSRemoting enabled so I am unable to simply Enter-PSSession. I tried to run a powershell script through psexec but I have yet to Set-Execution Policy on the machine. My thoughts were to execute a powershell logon script that accomplished this but before I tried this I was going to see if there were any other methods to enable-psremoting on a machine. Thanks in advance!

  • Firefox keyboard shortcuts to menu items / add-on functions

    - by Cel
At the moment I'm using context menus a lot to access commands in Firefox, but I would like to replace this repetitive clicking and searching with keyboard shortcuts for the common tasks that I perform. How to assign keys to add-on functionality? E.g. I use Close Other Tabs from Tab Mix Plus a lot - but I could not find any add-on that allows me to create a key combination for it e.g. Ctrl Alt Shift F4? My search did yield Key config, but this extension does not allow mapping to add-on functions I thought Menu Editor might be relevant, as you can change menus with it, and re-arrange even add-on items A rather demanding solution here, which seems to require re-compiling some jar files Customizing menu shortcuts in Firefox

  • Restoring files from blueprint on command

    - by Nick
I am setting up a server. I already have rented a machine running centOS 6 but I have run into a bit of a technical problem with configuring the server software: The server will have some files that it will try to read/write to them but what I need is a way to have a blueprint of these files and everytime the server restarts the files that it used get deleted and replaced by the blueprints. I have heared of a RAM disks or Virtual File Systems but didnt quite understand how they work or how to set them up. The server software is written in java which means bash commands can be run from it. I cannot modify what happens when the server shuts down entirely what I can do is run a command before the server runs the final shutdown save

  • Force '^C' to be printed when editing current prompt, then aborting it

    - by Stefan Lasiewski
This is the opposite of Prevent “^C” from being printed when aborting editing current prompt. I'm using Bash. When I'm editing the commandline in Bash, and I hit Control-C to abort the commandline, the '^C' character does not display. I would like to see this character. I tried commands like stty -ctlecho and stty ctlecho (which I borrowed from the other question), but this didn't work for me. This behavior seems to be true with my environment on Ubuntu, CentOS and MacOSX.

  • How to recursively move all files (including hidden) in a subfolder into a parent folder in *nix?

    - by deadprogrammer
This is a bit of an embarrassing question, but I have to admit that this late in my career I still have questions about the mv command. I frequently have this problem: I need to move all files recursively up one level. Let's say I have folder foo, and a folder bar inside it. Bar has a mess of files and folders, including dot files and folders. How do I move everything in bar to the foo level? If foo is empty, I simply move bar one level above, delete foo and rename bar into foo. Part of the problem is that I can't figure out what mv's wildcard for "everything including dots" is. A part of this question is this - is there an in-depth discussion of the wildcards that cp and mv commands use somewhere (googling this only brings very basic tutorials).

  • Find keyword values from PDF [closed]

    - by JukkaA
I have a lot of PDF reports I'd need to index. They're mostly "text-based PDFs", not images. I know they all have account number in certain format, 123456AAAAA and some other keyword info like addresses, customer names etc. needed in indexing these files. Basically if the file is ab.pdf, I need to create ab.txt that contains: ACC=123456AAAA Customer=John Doe Date=20120808 What would be the best software/solution to generate indexing information for these? I know there's pdftotext, but piping it to different grep/awk commands is a hack... It would be nice to specify an area in PDF to search for the account number, and specify the format it is in.

  • The 'which' command returns nothing via cron, but works via console

    - by Zárate
Hi there, I've written a little utility in haXe + Neko that needs to execute some GIT commands. To avoid hardcoding the path to the GIT executable I'd like to use the which command to find out where it is. Everything works as expected when running manually from the console, but not when the the app runs on a cron job. I'm aware of the restricted environment (here or here) when you run a script using cron, but still surprised this doesn't work: /usr/bin/which git >> /home/user/git.txt The text file is created but the content is empty. Again, when run from the console it works as expected. Any ideas? I'm running OS X Leopard, if that helps. Thanks : ) Juan

  • Is it possible to use different keyboards for different applications?

    - by Paperflyer
What I would like is this: I would have two keyboards. One of them is "connected" to Matlab, the other is "connected" to my text editor of choice. This way, I could edit some script and still test some commands in Matlab without having to constantly switch between the applications. Basically, I would want to have an additional keyboard attached to my computer that solely controlled Matlab. That would be awesome! Is there any way to do this? Preferably with OSX, but it would be fun on Windows or Linux, too.

  • How do you create virtual folders from saved search

    - by Jérôme Radix
I would like to have on unix-like platforms, the same functionality as to Windows 7 Library folders (aka virtual folders) you see in Windows Explorer. Gnome Nautilus do that kind of virtual folders through saved search. But I want a system-wide solution, not a gnome-wide solution. Is there a tool that creates virtual folders from the concatenation of multiple search queries (the result of multiple find commands ?). The solution should index files for better performances and you should be able to define the default folder for copy operations. I assume the solution of this kind of problem certainly use FUSE, but I can't see a complete solution to this kind of task in FUSE applications.

  • mysql_close doesn't kill locked sql requests

    - by Nikita
I use mysqld Ver 5.1.37-2-log for debian-linux-gnu I perform mysql calls from c++ code with functions mysql_query. The problem occurs when mysql_query execute procedure, procedure locked on locked table, so mysql_query hangs. If send kill signal to application then we can see lock until table is locked. Create the following SQL table and procedure CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS `tabletolock` ( `id` INT NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT, PRIMARY KEY (`id`) )ENGINE = InnoDB; DELIMITER $$ DROP PROCEDURE IF EXISTS `LOCK_PROCEDURE` $$ CREATE PROCEDURE `LOCK_PROCEDURE`() BEGIN SELECT id INTO @id FROM tabletolock; END $$ DELOMITER; There are sql commands to reproduce the problem: 1. in one terminal execute lock tables tabletolock write; 2. in another terminal execute call LOCK_PROCEDURE(); 3. In first terminal exeute show processlist and see | 2492 | root | localhost | syn_db | Query | 12 | Locked | SELECT id INTO @id FROM tabletolock | Then perfrom Ctrl-C in second terminal to interrupt our procudere and see processlist again. It is not changed, we already see locked select request and can teminate it by unlock tables or kill commands. Problem described is occured with mysql command line client. Also such problem exists when we use functions mysql_query and mysql_close. Example of c code: #include <iostream> #include <mysql/mysql.h> #include <mysql/errmsg.h> #include <signal.h> // g++ -Wall -g -fPIC -lmysqlclient dbtest.cpp using namespace std; MYSQL * connection = NULL; void closeconnection() { if(connection != NULL) { cout << "close connection !\n"; mysql_close(connection); mysql_thread_end(); delete connection; mysql_library_end(); } } void sigkill(int s) { closeconnection(); signal(SIGINT, NULL); raise(s); } int main(int argc, char ** argv) { signal(SIGINT, sigkill); connection = new MYSQL; mysql_init(connection); mysql_options(connection, MYSQL_READ_DEFAULT_GROUP, "nnfc"); if (!mysql_real_connect(connection, "127.0.0.1", "user", "password", "db", 3306, NULL, CLIENT_MULTI_RESULTS)) { delete connection; cout << "cannot connect\n"; return -1; } cout << "before procedure call\n"; mysql_query(connection, "CALL LOCK_PROCEDURE();"); cout << "after procedure call\n"; closeconnection(); return 0; } Compile it, and perform the folloing actions: 1. in first terminal local tables tabletolock write; 2. run program ./a.out 3. interrupt program Ctrl-C. on the screen we see that closeconnection function is called, so connection is closed. 4. in first terminal execute show processlist and see that procedure was not intrrupted. My question is how to terminate such locked calls from c code? Thank you in advance!

  • How do I extract files from one tarball to another tarball in one step?

    - by Martin
I have some fairly large tarball archives, from which I need to extract some files. I will later repack those files to transfer them to another server. Currently that is a two (multi) step process for me: mkdir ttmp tar -vxzf large.tgz -C ttmp/ --strip-components=<INT> <folder-to-be-extracted> or alternatively with wildcards mkdir ttmp tar -vxzf large.tgz -C ttmp/ --strip-components=<INT> \ --wildcards --no-anchored '*pattern*' Then I go ahead and recompress the created folder tar -vczf small.tgz ttmp/* rm -rf ttmp How can I combine these two commands into one? Like this tar -x large.tgz > tar -c small.tgz Just to show, what I already tried: Whenever I search the terms "extract" I will end up here or here or even here. When I use the term "split" I will end up here and that is definitely not what I intend to do. When I use "repack" I end up in strange places.

  • Taking stock of an existing ASA Firewall

    - by Nate
Imagine you are given an existing network using an ASA firewall. The network works, but you aren't sure of anything else. The firewall may be completely improperly configured, with "outside" actually being inside and "inside" actually being outside, for all you know. My question is this: what are the commands to take stock of an existing ASA firewall setup? With only CLI access, how do I figure out: What interfaces are available The names of the interfaces The security levels attached to the interfaces The access-lists attached to the interfaces, including rules and directions I know how to set these things (interface, nameif, security-level, and access-list/access-group), but I don't know how to figure them out given an existing system. On a related note, is there anything else that I should worry about checking to make sure that the network isn't wide open? Thanks!

  • Using ROBOCOPY to MOVE data around, not copy it

    - by Nate Bross
    I have the following powershell script, which executes a few robocopy commands: ROBOCOPY.exe $q3 $q4 /R:5 /W:15 /S /NP /MT:32 /XA:SH /XJD ROBOCOPY.exe $q2 $q3 /R:5 /W:15 /S /NP /MT:32 /XA:SH /XJD ROBOCOPY.exe $q1 $q2 /R:5 /W:15 /S /NP /MT:32 /XA:SH /XJD ROBOCOPY.exe $src $q1 /R:5 /W:15 /S /NP /MT:32 /XA:SH /XJD This works fine, but it takes a really long time, I'm wondering, if there is a way that I can have robocopy do a "cut + paste" instead of a "copy + paste" so windows will move the NTFS pointer to the file, instead of actually copying all of the bits of each file?

  • Kill xserver from command line (init 3/5 does not work)

    - by Richard Martinez
I'm running Linux Mint 10, although I've had this same issue with other variants of Linux. I've been told/found while researching that if the X server hangs or otherwise errors, one can drop to a root prompt, usually at another tty, and execute init 3 (to drop to single user mode) and then init 5 to return to the default, graphical session. Needless to say, I've tried this before in multiple configurations on multiple machines to no avail. The only feedback I receive form executing those two commands is a listing of VMWare services (from a kernel module) that are stopped and then restarted. Note: If I run startx (either before or after init 3), then I am told that the xserver is still running and that I should remove /tmp/.X0-lock. Having tried that, it removes that error message, but claims that the xserver cannot be attached as another instance is running. How do I kill the xserver completely? Can I killall some process name?

  • SSH and Latent Connections (e.g., satellite connections)

    - by user71494
Most of the week I live in the city where I have a typical broadband connection, but most weekends I'm out of town and only have access to a satellite connection. Trying to work over SSH on a satellite connection, while possible, is hardly desirable due to the high latency ( 1 second). My question is this: Is there any software that will do something like buffering keystrokes on my local machine before they're sent over SSH to help make the lag on individual keystrokes a little bit more transparent? Essentially I'm looking for something that would reduce the effects of the high latency for everything except for commands (e.g., opening files, changing to a new directory, etc.). I've already discovered that vim can open remote files locally and rewrite them remotely, but, while this is a huge help, it is not quite what I'm looking for since it only works when editing files, and requires opening a connection every time a read/write occurs. (For anyone who may not know how to do this and is curious, just use this command: 'vim scp://host/file/path/here)

  • Dead-simple USB-based Windows partition cloner?

    - by OverTheRainbow
Clonezilla is a fine open-source tool, but it requires going through several screens. Since I need to save/restore the same Windows partition, I was wondering if someone knew of a tool (open-source or not) that is easier to use and boots off a USB keydrive. Ideally, it'll save the two commands to save/restore a partition, so I just need to boot the host from the USB key, choose the command, and it'll take care of business. Are there solutions that look like this? Thank you. Edit: Here's one among other articles that shows how to tell CZ to run a script to avoid the multiple screens.
