• Apache ProxyPass/ProxyPassReverse to IIS

  We have an ASP.NET web application which is mapped to a folder on an apache hosted php site using ProxyPass.ProxyPassReverse. A couple of problems being encountered. cookies are being lost which breaks the site navigation, this can be overcome by setting the asp app as cookieless. Forms authentication is used on the ASP site, this is also broken withe the proxypass in place, suspect this is cookie related also. ASP site works ok when run from a domain/ip address. Use of a separate domain / sub-domain is not an option duew to client requirements.

  My Firefox configuration is tricky: Firefox runs at separate restricted user account which cannot connect to main X server. Firefox uses Xvfb (virtual "headless" X server) as X server. x11vnc is running on that Xvfb. On the main X server there is vncviewer running that connect to this x11vnc On powerful laptop (Acer Extensa 5220) it seems to work more or less well, but on "Acer Aspire One" netbook it is slowish (on a background that firefox is loaded with lots of extensions). How to optimise this scheme? Requirements: Browser cannot connect to main X server. Browser should be in chroot jail (no "suid" scripts, readonly for many things) Browser should have a lot of features (like in AutoPager, NoScript, WoT, AdBlockPlus)

• Python Profiling not installed in Ubuntu? How do I get it in a virtualenv and without apt-get?

  According to the Python documentation, the "profile" module is part of the standard library. But I can't find it. On my home machine, I was able to add it using apt-get install. (ie. it's split out into a separate ubuntu package.) On my work machine, (also ubuntu) I'm running in a virtualenv, so apt-get install isn't relevant. I can install python modules from pypi using easy-install, but I can't see anything on pypi which corresponds to the profiling module. (Presumably because it's meant to be part of the standard python install.) So how can I install it in this environment?

  I am trying to install Oracle Client 11.1.0.7 on a Windows Server 2008 64-bit. To some this might not be rocket science but I can't understand what the options under the install screen "Specify Home Details" mean. The defaults given suggest that I use Oracle Base and install software under my own account name. It also suggests that each user should have a separate Oracle Base. This seems counter intuitive to me. I am doing a server install after all. All I want to use the installation for is to connect to an Oracle Database from Reporting Services. Can I safely ignore this and just accept the defaults? What are the implications if I change the location to a common directory?

• How to cache streaming video and silverlight with squid windows reverse proxy

  We have an intranet web server running a silverlight application (ACTUS media monitor if anyone cares to know). The server is used to record video and stream it to clients through a CDN solution. We want to put a reverse proxy in between the server and CDN provider in order to remove the office network bottleneck that's currently strangling us. I've set up SQUID for windows on a separate machine outside the network using squid BasicAccelerator configuration setting. It seems to work as far as the reverse proxy is concerned, requests are forwarded and the application is working but it doesn't seem to cache anything (no space is used on the drive where squid is installed). I found to explicit setting to turn caching on in squid, so i assume it's on by default. Perhaps I need some other trick to make the video and/or silverlight cacheable? Any help will be appreciated. Any info you need to help me will be provided at once. Thanks in advance!

• IIS Reverse Proxy support for multiple protocols

  I have a server 2012 machine running IIS. It's in my DMZ and I would like to use it to do reverse proxy for several services. I can get it to route traffic on port 80 to 2 separate internal servers running web apps but there are some issues when I try to forward SSH (not port 80/443) and then when I try to forward OWA (Micrsoft exchange's 'webmail' services) to the internal mail server I run in to issues with guides (like this: http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2013/07/19/reverse-proxy-for-exchange-server-2013-using-iis-arr-part-1.aspx) when they say to have all traffic forwarded to the server farm created for OWA. My question for you all is this - given that there is no more Threat Management Gateway (only runs on server 2008) and ISA 2006 is also dead - is it possible to support multiple types of reverse proxies with different protocols (ftp, ssh, web, ssl-web) in IIS, or would it be better to install a different DMZ OS like a nginx server and use linux firewalls + nginx reverse proxy? • Windows 2003 and 2008 AD integrated DNS zones

  We have a Windows 2003 server DC1 which is our primary DC holding all FSMO roles. It also is a DNS server for our domain domain.local which is an active directory integrated zone. We also have a Windows 2008 DC name DC2 All servers have the correct DNS entries etc. However on all dns servers there are event id 4515 indicating there are duplicate zones in separate directory partitions and only one will be used until the other is removed. And I see these, there is a zone for domain.local under the default naming partition CN=System, CN=MicrosoftDNS, DC=domain.local. As well as the DomainDNSZones partition DC=DomainDNSZones, DC=DOMAIN, DC=local, CN=MicrosoftDNS It seems that the partition in the Default Naming partition is the one which is being used currently. Which one should be in use? How do I make the EventID 4515's go away? EventID 4515: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/867464 Thanks

• Link bonding across multiple switches?

  I've read up a little bit on bonding nics with ifenslave; what I'm having trouble understanding is whether there is special configuration needed in order to split the bonds across two switches. For example, if I have several servers that all have two nics each, and two separate switches, do I just configure the bonds and plug 1 nic from each into switch #1 and the other from each into switch #2? or is there more to it than that? If the bonds are active-backup, will a nic failure on single machine mean that server may become disconnected since the rest of the machines are using the primary nic and it's using the secondary? Or do you link the switches with one cable as well?

  We are actively using the Follow Up mail feature to assign users to particular mail follow up items. Although mail item follow ups are generally the province of the individual user, by changing the flag value from "Follow Up" to "User name", we can see each other's follow up tasks and group on responsible party. Currently we accomplish the Flag value change manually. My sense is the easiest way to perfect the process is a separate macro for each user. Along the lines of the macro to change the star/end due date to end of month, please define the macro to re-assign the Flag value for each highlighted mail item (previously assigned by default). • How can I follow someone from my non-default account?

  In Tweetdeck I have two accounts; a default one and a secondary one. I have them both in separate columns. However, when a person crops up in my non-default account column that I want to follow I can't seem to find a way to follow them from that account. Hovering over the 'Follow' button brings up the tooltip saying 'From {@Account A}' but no way to switch to the other account. Aside from opening up the link in my browser, signing into Twitter from my second account and then finding the user that way, can I do it directly from Tweetdeck?

  in the environment where windows client computers are used to run putty to connect to multiple linux servers i'm considering moving away from password based authentication and using public/private key pairs with pass-phrases. using ssh-agent would be nice, but at the same time i'd like it to 'forget' the pass-phrases after given period of inactivity. it seems that putty's pageant does not provide such feature; what would you suggest as alternative? solutions that i'm considering: patching pageant code [might be tricky, code is probably quite rusty and project - sadly - stagnant] writing small custom application using GetLastInputInfo and killing pageant if the machine was idle for more than let's say 15 minutes [ yes, there'll be separate policy for locking the desktops as well ] using alternative ssh client and ssh agent. any suggestions? thanks!

• Migrating from MyISAM to XtraDB

  Just a few questions that I just can't find anywhere about migrating to XtraDB. My group has been using MyISAM dbs for production and was wondering how hard is it to migrate to Percona's XtraDB and how would you go about doing so? Would I have to migrate MyISAM to InnoDB first or can I go straight to XtraDB? I installed Percona Server with XtraDB package on my Fedora machine but the documentation isn't very helpful as to how to use it so I was wondering does Percona just piggyback on a standard MySQL installation or is it a separate entity?   How to make one user account to be like root for some other user account, e.g. to be able to read, write, chmod all it's files, chown from this account to master and back, kill/ptrace all it's processes and to all thinks root can, but limited only to that particular slave account? Now I'm simulating this by allowing "master" user to "sudo -u slaveuser" and setting setfacl -dRm u:masteruser:rwx ~slaveuser. It is useful as I run most desktop programs in separate user accounts, but need to move files between them sometimes. If it requires some simple kernel patch it is OK.

• Changes to talk/ytalk or alternative chat in the Linux terminal

  While looking for a piece of software that provides chat between 2 Linux server users logged in the terminal, I tried talk/ytalk. Unfortuntaley it provides chat between users on separate walls (each user has its own wall) and the messages lack timestamps. Is it possible to set it up so that at least timestamps are provided? Alternatively, is there any other software that could provide one wall on which users write messages prepended with time? I've tried clearing cache on firefox and it didn't help, so I'm thinking there's something wrong with the way HAProxy parses through the Firefox request headers.

• Load balancing without a load balancer?

  I have 4 nginx-powered image servers on their own subdomains which users would access at random. I decided to put them all behind a HAProxy load balancer to improve the reliability and to see the traffic statistics from a single location. It seemed like a no-brainer. Unfortunately, the move was a complete failure as the load balancer's 100mbit port was completely saturated with all requests now going through it. I was wondering what to do about this - I could get a port upgrade ($$) or return to 4 separate image servers that are randomly accessed. I thought about putting HAProxy on each image server which would in turn route to another image server if that server's nginx service was having trouble. What would you do? I would like to not have to spend too much additional money.

• ganglia graphs like munin for cpu, etc?

  I'm coming from munin and a CPU graph contains data for system, user, nice, etc ALL on one graph. I just installed ganglia and setup the basic monitoring. It appears that each type of cpu data is a separate graph! WTF is this and can I change the defaults to combine these into a single per host? That is my question, how do I combine cpu data into a single graph. Also, can I change the layout to something closer to munin's day-week side-by-side layout? I'm trying to be impartial and give ganglia a chance. ;)

• breaking mdadm raid and moving to NTFS

  I'm running Ubuntu 8 something and my data is on a mirrored pair of 1TB disks formatted as ext3, and the RAID is via mdadm. I want to move to Windows 7 (yeah yeah I know but Linux aint doing it for me at the moment) and migrate the disks to NTFS. My plan is: Break the MDADM RAID (by failing one disk logically) Format the 'failed' disk as NTFS Copy data from the RAID array to the NTFS disk (dont care about perms) Install Windows, (new separate non RAid disk) and my data disk is available. I've researched this and it seems the easiest way. I dont have another disk to back up to so I think this is my only way. Can anyone see a better/easier way?

• Limit ftp users to only certain directories in Ubuntu

  There are several questions around limiting ftp users to certain directories. However, most of them refer to vsftpd, which I don't think I have installed on my system. I'm running Ubuntu 9.04. How can I tell what ftp service I have installed, and then limit certain users to only the /home/ftpuser directory instead of having full access to the file system? I think I can add them to a separate group and give that group access to the proper directories, but then do I have to remove that groups permissions from all other directories? It seems like there should be an easy way like setting the chroot_local_user value in the /etc/vsftpd/vsftpd.conf file, but that doesn't exist on my system.

  Hi, I have an Excel spreadsheet with a column called "Time Elapsed" that stores the number of days it took to complete a task. I would like to make a pivot table out of this spreadsheet where I divide the "Time Elapsed" column into ranges, e.g., how many tasks took 0 to 4 days to complete how many tasks took 5 to 9 days how many took 10 to 14 days how many took 15+ days Do I have to create new columns in my spreadsheet dedicated to each interval (0 to 4, 5 to 9, etc.) or can I use some feature of pivot tables to separate my one "Time Elapsed" column into intervals? • Is it a bad idea to make roaming profile share available offline?

  This is regarding a Windows 2008 R2 domain. The Documents, Desktop, Application Data folders are all redirected to users' home directory (mapped as Z:). The users home directory is configured to be offline for mobile users. User profiles are configured as roaming, and located on a separate share (not mapped as a network drive), just accessed via an UNC path. Would it be a good or idea to make the roaming profile share available offline for mobile users using the caching option "All files and programs that users open from the share will be automatically available offline"?

• Interaction .asp with .swf flash - good on IIS6, bad on IIS7

  Hi, all! I can't make my app work after migration from IIS6 to IIS7. Problem is described below. My app: in my app I use 'flash.swf'. This .swf appeals to .asp, which contains only: Response.write "<myNode>test_is_ok</myNode>" .swf must get it and show "test_is_ok". And it is really ok on IIS6 2003, but on IIS7 2008R2 .swf shows me "undefined". Situation: Separate request from IE to .asp gets "test_is_ok" on both computers. If .swf from one computer appeals to .asp on another - nothing works. If I delete .asp, then .swf also shows "undefined", so I think it don't really appeals to .asp on IIS7. Suggest me, please, something, what can help.

  Aiming to have a large internal HDD to store files, and several OSes on separate disks. They all need to read and write to one storage drive. Ubuntu (13.04+) Mac OSX (10.8+) Windows (7+) What format should the drive be? Would like to avoid buying third party software, here's what I have discerned so far: NTFS - Can't be written to by Mac without buying third party software? ext3 - Windows can't read, third party software in development. Mac has OSXFUSE HFS+ - Buy third party and/or faff around to get working on windows exFAT - Cross platform, but breaks MS patents?

• 4TB HGST SATA drive only shows 1.62 TB in Windows Server 2012

  I'm using a Supermicro X9SRE-3F motherboard with the latest BIOS and 2x 4TB drives connected to the on-board SATA controller. If I set the BIOS to RAID and create a RAID 1 array, the array shows up in the BIOS as 3.6TB. However when I boot Windows (on a separate RAID 1 array), the 4TB drives show up individually in disk manager as 2x 1.62TB drives. I could use Windows 2012 to set up software RAID 1, but when I set the BIOS back to 2x individual drives, they still show up in Windows as 2x 1.62TB drives. How do I access the full capacity of these drives? Thanks, Brian Bulaw
