• Debian Stable: Can't update kernel, libc won't update.

  I use Debian Stable (squeeze) on a virtual host where I can't touch the kernel, it's stuck (and will be for some time as support told me) at Linux 2.6.18-028stab070.3 #1 SMP Wed Jul 21 18:33:27 MSD 2010 x86_64 So when I try to update, several packages fail with FATAL: kernel too old for example Preparing to replace libgcc1 1:4.6.0-11 (using .../libgcc1_1%3a4.6.1-1_amd64.deb) ... • Green flickering pixels that move with black images

  Strange question... Occasionally, on my LCD screen, pixels that should be black flicker rapidly and constantly between black and green, about 4 flickers a second. The crazy part is, unlike dead/stuck pixels, they are relative to content on the screen and move with it. For example, I might be looking at a web page with a picture that has lots of black. There might be a couple of green flashing pixels in that black that shouldn't be there. I scroll the page, and the green flickering pixels move with the image. It seems that everyphysical pixel is fine, but somehow something interprets part of the image in a way that causes flickering green... It's not just in a web browser. My first thought was to blame a trolling blogger cunningly uploading an animated gif that simulates a failing pixel... but it happens in a wide range of applications. It seems to occur randomly, other than that it seems to only occur in areas of pure black, and it's always pure 100% green. It happens rarely enough that it's not a big deal, but it's such a strange problem it bugs me. I can't find any info on anything like this. I'm not even sure if it's hardware or software. Any ideas? (windows 7 laptop connected to LCD by DVI to HDMI cable)

• Laptop Most Likely to Have Good Driver Support

  Through numerous bad experiences, I have learned that the most likely cause of laptop "failure" is the lack of updated drivers for new operating systems. As an example, I have a perfectly good Thinkpad T42 at home which runs Windows 7 just fine for my purposes except that no compatible ATI video drivers are available, and the generic drivers have flicker effects. I recently saw an ASUS laptop which looked quite nice except that I would be beholden to them to release ATI video driver updates customized for it. And, I can't trust them to do that for more than six months. What laptops (manufacturer/line) should I consider so that I could expect at least a couple years of frequent updates? I plan on running Windows 7 and installing whatever successor comes out. I like Intel components (especially WiFi) because I can install their drivers directly from them, and they have a long history of providing updates for years after shipping a particular component. More generally, components from companies which are likely to update drivers frequently are good as long as I can install the component manufacturer-provided drivers without laptop-specific customization (like the ATI drivers). Also, if a component can be replaced easily, I am less concerned. For example, Dell stopped pumping out updated drivers for one of its mini-PCI WiFi cards. The solution was to buy an Intel replacement on eBay for $12! That's fine. I can deal with that. So, what laptops should I consider so that I'm not likely to be stuck between a rock and a hard place?

• Cisco 7206 error trying to copy running-config (Bad file number)

  I have a cisco 7206 that terminates a bunch of pppoa sessions for dsl users. Today I noticed that if I tried to "show run" nothing happened. I mean that it doesn't show anything and just sends me right back to the command prompt. I decided I should probably try and back up the config and that is where I'm stuck. Any time I try to copy the running-config to tftp or to pcmcia card that I know is not full I get the following error: %Error opening system:/running-config (Bad file number) I get this error when I try to do anything with the running config. I've been googling around, but I haven't found any thing else that talks about this error. I've seen people say to erase the nvram and then try to "copy run start", but I don't want to erase the nvram until I can pull off a copy of the running-config. I would try to reboot it, but the startup-config that is on the nvram looks to be woefully out of date (good job me!). Any ideas what might be wrong? or how I can get the running config off the router?

• How can I make an encrypted email message into a .p7m file?

  This is a bit complicated, so I'll explain what I'm really trying to do here: I have a Debian server, and I want to automatically email myself certain logs every week. I'm going to use cron and a bash script to copy the logs into a tarball shortly after midnight every Monday. A bash script on my home computer will then download the tarball from the server, along with a file to be used as the body of the email, and call an AppleScript to make a new email message. This is where I'm stuck—I can't find a way to encrypt and sign the email using AppleScript and Apple's mail client. I've noticed that if I put a delay in before sending the message, Mail will automatically set it to be encrypted and signed (as it normally does when I compose a message myself). However, there's no way to be sure of this when the script runs—if something goes wrong there, the script will just blindly send the email unencrypted. My solution there would be to somehow manually create a .p7m file with the tarball and message and attach it to the email the AppleScript creates. Then, when I receive it, Mail will treat it just like any other encrypted message with an attachment (right?) If there's a better way to do this, please let me know. ^^ (Ideally, everything would be done from the server, but there doesn't seem to be a way to send mail automatically without storing a password in plaintext.) (The server is running Debian squeeze; my home computer is a Mac running OS X Lion.)

• Dell XPS 1530 DVD-RW firmware problem

  Hello everyone. I have this XPS laptop since a year and a half ago. About 2 months ago, with the waranty expired, i tried to run the optiarc slot load DVD-RW firmware update, and said everything was okay. Then I restarted it and the problem started: Now, every single time I turn on my computer, it get stuck at the BIOS POST until the drive sounds like "ready" and then the computer starts normally. And this happen EXACTLY the same when it's getting back from sleep. I'm pretty sure is not a software issue, because I tried with Vista Home Premiun 32 bits, Ubuntu (from 8.10+)32 & 64, and with W7 64. Already tried to run the firmware installer like a million time, in case it is a failing install with no luck. Also, google it to see if someone has the same problem, and again, no. The Drive performs pretty okay once the System is on, but waiting to the drive to be ready everytime is really annoying. The Firmware I updated was this, and the drive is: K937C Assembly, Dvd+/-rw, 8, SLOT, 1530 Sony Nec Optiarc Inc. I'll apreciate any help you can give me

• IIS 6 ASP.NET default handler-mappings and virtual directories

  I'm having a problem with setting a default mapping in IIS 6. I want to secure *.HTML files with ASP.NET forms authentication. The problem seems to have something to do with using virtual directories to hold the html files. Here's how it's setup: sample directory tree c:/inetpub/ (nothing in here) d:/web_files/my_web_apps d:/web_files/my_web_apps/app1/ d:/web_files/my_web_apps/app2/ d:/web_files/my_web_apps/html_files/ app1 and app2 both access the same html_files directory, so html_files is set as a virtual directory in the web apps in IIS... sample web directory tree //app1/html_files/ (points to physical directory: d:/web_files/my_web_apps/html_files/) //app2/html_files/ (points to physical directory: d:/web_files/my_web_apps/html_files/) If I put a file called test.html in the root of //app1/ and then add the default mapping to the asp.net dll and setup my security on the root folder with deny="?", then accessing test.html works exactly as expected. If I'm not authenticated, it takes me to the login.aspx page, and if I am authenticated then it displays test.html. If I put the test.html file in the html_files directory I get a totally different behavior. Now the login.aspx page loads and I stuck some code in to check if I was still authenticated: <p>autheticated: <%=User.Identity.IsAuthenticated%></p> I figured it would say false because why else would it bother to load the login page? Nope, it says true - so it knows i'm authenticated, but it won't give me access to the test.html file. I've spent several hours on this and haven't been able to solve it. I'm going to spend some more time on google to see if I've missed something. Fingers crossed.

• VMM 2012 Adding Hosts in Trusted Forest

  I have two forests with a two way trust between them. VMM 2012 sits in ForestA and I can discover hosts in ForestA with no issue. When I try to discover hosts in ForestB I hit one of two issues: If I go through the GUI or use Powershell just like I normally do I get the following error on the job: Error (10407) Virtual Machine Manager could not query Active Directory Domain Services. Recommended Action Verify that the domain name and the credentials, if provided, are correct and then try the operation again. It doesn't matter which account I use. I've tried accounts from both forests, with Admin/Domain Admin permissions all over the place, etc Going through the GUI (can't find the switch in Powershell to duplicate this), I check the box "Skip AD Verification" and it causes the GUI to crash during discovery. I found an article (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg610641.aspx) that describes how to add a host in a disjoint namespace (even though that doesn't apply to me) and it says that VMM creates an SPN if one does not exist. So I verified that the correct SPN's exist in ForestB, that did not help the issue. I have a case open with PSS but they are stuck. I have VMM traces if anyone would like to see them. Any suggestions or ideas?

  Is there a way to know the source and legitimacy of the tasks in the task scheduler in windows server 2008 and 2003? Can I check if the task was added by Microsoft (ie: from sccm) or by a 3rd party application? For each task in the task scheduler, I want to verify that the task has not been created by a third party application. I only want to allow standards Microsoft Tasks and disable all other non-standards tasks. I have created a PowerShell script that goes through all the xml files in the C:\Windows\System32\Tasks directory and I was able to read all the xml task files successfully but I am stuck on how to validate the tasks. • Small store infrastructure - where to begin?

  It looks like my older brother is about to change jobs - from lawyer to shooting range proprietor - and since I'm the family 'computer guy' I have the task of coming up with and setting up the in-store equipment. Only problem, I don't know how to start or where to look. I'm a web programmer, not an IT specialist. To that end, I figured I should ask the pros. Users: 3 (myself, my brother, and his business partner) Equipment: 1 Windows (likely 7) desktop for POS software, 1 Windows desktop/laptop for backroom use (bookkeeping, etc.) Other: ?? I'm looking for a reliable and, well, idiot-proof way to handle backups. Neither my brother nor his business partner are tech savvy (A web browser, email, MS Word and Excel are about the extent of their knowledge), so I need something they can handle. On-site would be preferable to off-site, given my brother's hesitance to have sensitive business data be handled by an outside source. I'm also looking for a small on-site server. I estimate that, at most, only 2-3 users will need access. A linux solution would keep costs down, but I'm concerned about Windows <- linux interoperability. Would the store security cameras' storage be handled by the security company, or would we have to stream that data to our own server? I know from my own experience with personal security that the company gives/loans a recording device to the home owner, but I'm not sure about business security. I know this sounds like a shopping list, and it's pretty vague. I wish I could give more detail, but between my own ignorance and things not being 100% nailed down on the business end, I'm a bit stuck. At the very least I'd like a nudge - links on a place to start, what to look for, things I need to think about, etc. - for this endeavor. Thanks.

• How do I log back into a Windows Server 2003 guest OS after Hyper-V integration services installs and breaks my domain logins?

  After installing Hyper-V integration services, I appear to have a problem with logging in to my Windows Server 2003 virtual machine. Incorrect passwords and logins give the usual error message, but a correct login/password gives me this message: Windows cannot connect to the domain, either because the domain controller is down or otherwise unavailable, or because your computer account was not found. Please try again later. If this message continues to appear, contact your system administrator for assistance. Nothing pleases me more than Microsoft telling me (the ersatz system administrator) to contact my system administrator for help, when I suspect that I'm hooped. The virtual machine has a valid network connection, and has decided to invalidate all my previous logins on this account, so I can't log in and remotely fix anything, and I can't remotely connect to it from outside either. This appears to be a catch 22. Unfortunately I don't know any non-domain local logins for this virtual machine, so I suspect I am basically hooped, or that I need ophcrack. is there any alternative to ophcrack? Second and related question; I used Disk2VHD to do the conversion, and I could log in fine several times, until after the Hyper-V integration services were installed, then suddenly this happens and I can't log in now - was there something I did wrong? I can't get networking working inside the VM BEFORE I install integration services, and at the very moment that integration services is being installed, I'm getting locked out like this. I probably should always know the local login of any machine I'm upgrading so I don't get stuck like this in the future.... great. Now I am reminded again of this.

• Server 2008 RAID 5 Write Speeds

  I recently configured a RAID 5 partition in Server 2008 with 4 RAID 5 disks. These disks are connected through a SATA expansion card that uses PCIe. This morning, I checked and they had finally finished synchronizing, and so I tried to do some speed tests. Copying off the disks started pretty much fine - speeds began at 125MB/s, then trailed down to about 70MB/s, which I found odd but not worrying. Writing TO the disks however is a completely different story. I attempted to copy some of my VM host ISOs onto the disks (~2-4 GB apiece) and this resulted in speeds of approximately 10MB/s. I tried copying both from a local disk (connected directly to the motherboard) and from another server ththe gigabit network and results were the same. I checked the performance monitor while transferring the files and the only thing that stuck out was that my memory hard faults shot up to 6,000 per minute (spiking around 200/s) by explorer.exe. The system is running 2GB of DDR667 ECC RAM and a quad-core 2.3GHz opteron. Is there anything I can do to fix this performance issue (buy more RAM? move the drives to a faster box?, etc) or am I just screwed so long as I stick to windows.

• Prevent Amazon EC2 Time zone from reverting back on yum update

  I use an Amazon EC2 server instance that runs a distro called Amazon Linux AMI. (I've read that it is based on CentOS/Red Hat). My specific version is the 2012.09 release. Anyway, I was able to change the time zone about a week ago from the default UTC to America/New_York (which is EST/EDT). The command I used to change it was: ln -sf /usr/share/zoneinfo/America/New_York /etc/localtime ...thanks to this other Server Fault question. At that point, I was able to run date from the the command line, and it correctly displayed the EDT time. And even after EDT "fell back" to EST this past Sunday, I was pleased to find that running date still produced the correct local time. So that was great. However, after running a yum update yesterday, it seems that my time zone got reverted back to plain 'ol UTC. I even checked the last modified time of /etc/localtime file, and indeed it confirmed that it had been modified around the same time I had updated. Is there any way to prevent this from happening again, or will I be stuck resetting the time zone every time I do a yum update?

• Word 2010 creates multiple processes... sometimes

  I've run into a strange behavior when I migrated our users from Office 2007 / Vista to Office 2010 / Windows 7 (all 32-bit). They use a web based document management system called NetDocuments which stores all their .doc/.docx files. Generally, when they click on a doc from the browser window it fires up Word and opens the doc. Word has an add-in in it from NetDocs as well so it can upload the changed document directly back to the NetDocs server. I get a phone call when Word crashes, and every single time it has crashed I have witnessed multiple winword.exe processes running in task manager. I used process explorer to see what created the process, and it is all Internet Explorer. So far I have rolled them back to IE8 and the problem happens less frequently, but it still happens. When I try to duplicate the problem, I can make it happen sometimes if I open multiple documents very quickly. Using lightning fast alt-tab reflexes, I DO see that a 2nd WinWord process is created when a user clicks on a document, then it closes once the document is open. I think what is happening is that the secondary WinWord process that does some sort of NetDocs voodoo is getting stuck open. This behavior is new to Word 2010 / Windows 7 and google searching isn't coming up with much. I have seen a few posts that this is a known issue in certain circumstances and there is no "fix", but I thought it would good to ask others on this. Thanks!

• Setup my domain at Whois.com as nameservers for a Dedicated Server with Kloxo

  Hello, this is my first time at ServerFault, I'm a stackoverflow user. I'm faceing the next problem and may be its me, but I can't find proper guides to set up a domain and nameservers for a dedicated box. I have a domain, at whois.com, and a Dedicated server at Reliable Hosting Services, the server has 5 IPs, I know that I need 2 of them for the nameservers. Right now, my domain at whois.com is using nsX.whois.com nameservers and it has 2 child nameservers: ns1.mydomain.com & ns2.mydomain.com pointing to those 2 IPs from my Server. Whats next? I still cannot set that domain as my main server domain since it says: To map an IP to a domain, the domain must ping to the same IP, otherwise, the domain will stop working. The domain you are trying to map this IP to, doesn't resolve back to the IP, and so it cannot be set as the default domain for the IP. Well and I'm stuck on those steps, whats next to have my nameservers working and my main domain assigned to my server? Thank you very much and happy new year!!

• How to get data out of a Maxtor Shared Storage II that fails to boot?

  I've got a Maxtor Shared Storage II (RAID1 mode) which has developed some hardware failure, apparently: it fails to boot properly and is unreachable via network. When powering it on, it keeps making clunking/chirping disk noise and then sort of resets itself (with a flash of orange light in the usually-green LEDs); it then repeats this as if stuck in a loop. In fact, even the power button does nothing now – the only way I can affect the device at all is to plug in or pull out the power cord! (To be clear, I've come to regard this piece of garbage (which cost about 460 €) as my worst tech purchase ever. Even before this failure I had encountered many annoyances about the drive: 1) the software to manage it is rather crappy; 2) it is way noisier that what this type of device should be; 3) when your Mac comes out of sleep, Maxtor's "EasyManage" cannot re-mount the drive automatically.) Anyway, the question at hand is how to get my data out of it? As a very concrete first step, is there a way to open this thing without breaking the plastic casing into pieces? It is far from obvious to me how to get beyond this stage; it opens a little from one end but not from the other. If I somehow got the disks out, I could try mounting the disk(s) on one of the Macs or Linux boxes I have available (although I don't know yet if I'd need some adapters for that). (NB: for the purposes of this question, never mind any warranty or replacement issues – that's secondary to recovering the data.)

• Linux virtualization choices with graphic acceleration / video card support

  I am in the process of building a new desktop machine for work and fun. I am looking to run a undecided flavor of Linux (guessing Ubuntu) as my primary OS and several Windows installs with a Windows 7 install for .net development and gaming as virtualized environments. From my previous experiences with virtualization software in Linux I was never able to find an application that offered descent video card support / graphic acceleration etc. to be capable of playing any games within one of the virtualized environments. And since I will be investing quite a bit of money into this system for gaming I would naturally want to find the best option available to achieve this setup. So Onto my question: Is there any virtualization software available for Linux that has full video card support, graphic acceleration and capable of taking advantage of everything the video cards have to offer within the virtualized environments? Or am I stuck with running Windows 7 as my primary OS and using virtualization for Linux and the other OS's? Also I have no preference on open/closed source and price range would be up to $175.00 to support at least 3 virtualized environments.

• Faking a Linux environment without chroot

  For a university project I want to test a C++11 program on a 32-core machine. Unfortunately the machine has Ubuntu 12.04 with GCC 4.6 installed (we need GCC 4.7 because of some C++11 threading features). In such an environment I would normally run a chroot with a custom linux (say a debootstrap with Ubuntu 12.10). Since we don't get root access on the machine we can't use chroot. So far I have prepared a run-time environment using debootstrap for our code, I compiled it in the debootstrap environemnt. Then copied it onto the server (using rsync). In order to run our C++ code I set the LD_LIBRARY_PATH to export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=~/debootstrap/usr/lib/:~/debootstrap/lib64/:~/debootstrap/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/:~/debootstrap/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH and so far our code seems to run. I'm however stuck with our python code. It doesn't seem to be sufficient to set the paths manually. export PYTHONPATH=~/debootstrap/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages:~/debootstrap/usr/lib/python2.7:~/debootstrap/usr/lib/python2.7/plat-linux2:~/debootstrap/usr/lib/python2.7/lib-tk:~/debootstrap/usr/lib/python2.7/lib-dynload:~/debootstrap/usr/local/lib/python2.7/dist-packages:~/debootstrap/usr/lib/pymodules/python2.7:~/debootstrap/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/PIL:~/debootstrap/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/gtk-2.0:~/debootstrap/usr/lib/python2.7 Executing our script results in ImportError: No module named _path Is there an easier way to accomplish a "fake"-chroot than just overriding and creating environment variables? • A few tables are still out of sync after running mk-table-sync

  I have 1 master and 2 slaves. I am using MySQL 5.1.42 on all servers. I am attempting to use mk-table-checksum to verify that their data is in sync, but I am getting unexpected results on one of the slaves. First, I generate the checksums on the master like this: mk-table-checksum h=localhost --databases MYDB --tables {$table_list} --replicate=MYDB.mk_checksum --chunk-size=10M My understanding is that this runs the checksum queries on the master which then propagate via normal replication to the slaves. So, no locking is needed because the slaves will be at the same logical point in time when they run the checksum queries on themselves. Is this correct? Next, to verify that the checksums match, I run this on the master: mk-table-checksum --databases MYDB --replicate=IRC.mk_checksum --replicate-check 1 h=localhost,u=maatkit,p=xxxx If there are any differences, I repair the slaves like this: mk-table-sync --execute --verbose --replicate IRC.mk_checksum h=localhost,u=maatkit,p=xxxx After doing all of this, I repaired both slaves with mk-table-sync. However, everytime I run this sequence (after everything has already been repaired), one slave is perfectly in sync but one slave always has a few tables out of sync. I am 99.999% sure that the data on the slaves matches, since I repaired everything and the tables were not even updated on the master between runs of the checksum script. What would cause a few tables to always show out of sync on only one of the slaves? I am stuck. • Printer spooler service stop running when sent print job

  Every time i am sending a print job to the printer, i am don't get any response from the printer, and at the printer job list at the status of the job, i see that there was an Error, but it don't give me any clue on what could be the problem. After some investigation i found that every time that i send the print job to the printer the printer spooler service stops to run, then after a second or two it start again (i think that this behavior is related to the printer spooler settings to rerun it self after it stops). Things that i have tried so far: Remove and Install again the Driver. After removing the driver, i have removed the unnecessary registry keys according to this article from Microsoft, these are: Rename all files and folders in: c:\windows\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86 Remove anything but Drivers Print and Processors: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environment\Windows NT x86 Remove anything in here: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Monitors but: BJ Language Monitor Local Port Microsoft Document Imaging Writer Monitor Microsoft Shared Fax Monitor Standard TCP/IP Port USB Monitor WSD Port Disconnect and Reconnect the Printer. Clean the computer from Viruses & Spywares. Currently i am stuck, i have no more things to try, if anybody know about any kind of solution please let me know about it. Since i am want to keep this post as general problem that relate to the printer spooler, and not just my particular problem, i didn't included inside the windows version & the printer model, they are (although i think that it isn't relate just for that particular model): Windows 7 32bit, HP Officejet 4500 G510g-m (connect to the computer via USB). • Importing long numerical identifiers into Excel

  I have some data in a database that uses ids that have the form of 16 digit numbers. In some situations i need to export the data in such a way that it can be manipulated in excel. So i export the data into a file and import it into excel. I've tried several file formats and I'm stuck. The problem I'm facing is that when reading a file into excel that has a cell that looks like a number then excel treats it as a number. The catch is that (as far as i can tell) all numerical values in excel are double precision floating point which have a precision of less than 16 digits. So my ids are changed: very often the last digit its changed to a 0. So far I've only been able to convince excel to keep the Id unchanged by breaking it myself: by adding a letter or symbol to the Id. This however means that in order to use the value again it must be "unbroken". Is there a way to create a file where i can specify that excel must treat the value as a text without changing the value? Or its there a way to let excel treat the value as a long (64bit integer)?

• Arch Linux: How to handle patches which only you will use?

  I'm using freerdp together with xmonad and it has been giving me a lot of trouble. The super key (or "windows key") is my mod key in xmonad and it has been interfering with my freerdp usage rather annoyingly. Whenever I switched workspaces (or did anything else in xmonad involving the super key), windows (controlled by the freerdp instance in focus) registered a keypress as well. This event combined with the loss of focus got the super key stuck in windows indefinitely: the press of the keys d and r would first show my desktop, then open the run dialog (as if I was pressing the windows key constantly). I've tried several versions of freerdp, but all exhibited this annoying behavior. So I resorted to patching freerdp myself to just ignore the left super key on my keyboard. I love free software for a lot of reasons (especially the ability to alter things like this myself), however I still find it annoying to patch and rebuild freerdp on all version (and dependency) changes. How do you deal with situations like this? Is there even a "right way" to resolve this issue?

• Completed downloads freeze Windows

  The Issue Shortly after a file download via Google Chrome for Windows completes, the download will get stuck on "0 seconds left" and all other programs (except Google Chrome, for some reason, but browsing will not work) completely freezes into Windows' infamous "Not Responding" state, affecting Explorer particularly badly. Eventually, the programs will recover themselves but they will recover significantly faster if you cancel the file download, relative to how quickly you react. Performing the exact same operation immediately after cancelling the download usually works without issue. This issue occurs when with any file type (.ZIP, .MSI, .MSG, .PNG, .URL, etc) of any size from any source (Dropbox, SourceForge, Imgur, even tiny and locally-generated BLObs created by my own Chrome extension, etc) to any location.   Potential Causes As this issue is so inconsistent, I haven't been able to prove whether the issue is Chrome-specific or being caused by my system or my Chrome configuration but it's happening on both my work and home PCs. I originally suspected that this issue was being caused by security software scanning completed downloads for threats but I'm not as confident in that theory anymore as the issue persisted even after changing my security software from ESET NOD32 and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Pro to ESET Endpoint to Microsoft Security Essentials.   System Information (of both PCs) Windows version: 7 Service Pack 1 64-bit Google Chrome version: 30.0.1599.101 (but has been happening for a long time)   Screenshots

• Computer Won't Boot Properly, unless in safe mode?

  I bought a computer today and booted it up, but when I did I only got a blank screen. I checked to make sure it wasn't the monitor by connecting it to my old computer...it worked. I then tried connecting my monitor to both DVI ports and found that the bottom one did work. However, now it just boots up and says "loading windows" and then when the login screen is suppose to come up the screen just goes blank and monitor says "no input, check cord" (or something like that). I tried reinstalling windows and then I was able to log on normally. I used the CD's and reinstalled all the drivers, then rebooted...now I am stuck right back where I started. I tried taking out the RAM and inserting into different slots, that didn't fix anything. I was able to boot up into windows using safe-mode. I suspected that my ATI Radeon 6950 was the issue and downloaded the drivers, but I can't install them on safe-mode. Someone said to install C++ distr. and I tried doing that to fix driver installation problem of "failed to load detection driver" but it wouldn't let me do that either. Please someone help me, I don't want to have to deal with the evil redtape of sending it back to get a replacement! • Creating security permissions for a non-domain-member user in Windows Server 2008

  Hello everyone, I apologize in advance for incorrect use of terminology, as I'm not an IT person by trade. I'm doing some remote work via a VPN for a client and I need to add some DCOM Service security permissions for my remote user. Even though I'm on the VPN, the request for access to the DCOM service is using my PCs native user (and since I'm running Vista Home Premium it looks something like: PC-NAME\Username). The request for access comes back with access denied and I can not add this user to the security permissions as it "is not from a domain listed in the Select Location dialog box, and is therefore not valid". I'm pretty stuck and have no clue what kind of steps I need to do here. Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance. EDIT: I have no control over what credentials are being passed in to the server by my computer. This scenario is occurring in an installation wizard that has a section which requests you point it to the machine running the "server" version of the software I'm installing (it then tries to invoke the relevant COM service, but my user does not have "Remove Activation Permissions" on that service, so I get request denied).
