• How to install rgdal on Ubuntu 12.10?

  I'm strugling to install rgdal library on Ubuntu 12.10. Installation from within R results in error: Error: gdal-config not found The gdal-config script distributed with GDAL could not be found. If you have not installed the GDAL libraries, you can download the source from http://www.gdal.org/ If you have installed the GDAL libraries, then make sure that gdal-config is in your path. Try typing gdal-config at a shell prompt and see if it runs. If not, use: --configure-args='--with-gdal-config=/usr/local/bin/gdal-config' with appropriate values for your installation. ERROR: configuration failed for package ‘rgdal’ * removing ‘/home/rdk/R/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-library/2.15/rgdal’ Warning in install.packages : installation of package ‘rgdal’ had non-zero exit status R-sig-Geo, this two SE questions and other websites pointed me to the requirements of libgdal1-dev. But when I tried sudo apt-get install libgdal1-dev I end up with another error message Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. • C printf not working on ubuntu 13.10 terminal

  First, im new in ubuntu so please bear with me. I need to create a C based program for a course in my university. I was using opensuse and its konsole when i was in the university's lab. So basically i need to install opensuse on my system or using a vmware. But i feel lazy to do that, so i tried to run it on my ubuntu instead of opensuse. However, no C code seems working on ubuntu's terminal. The compiling is success, but its not running, or at least the printf is not running. This is my code, a very very simple one : #include<stdio.h> #include<unistd.h> #include<stdlib.h> int main() { printf("test"); return 0; } When i compile it with gcc test.c -o test everything work fine and i get an executeable file. Then i try to run it by ./test, but the printf is not printed. No error or warning was shown. Am i missing something? Note : my gcc is the new one, it should has no problem. Thanks for your help :D

• Problem installing drivers for Brother DCP-1400

  I have a problem installing drivers for my DCP-1400 printer. I am using Ubuntu 11.10 and am new to Ubuntu and Linux in general. I downloaded the lpr and cupswrapper files from the Brother linux site into my Download directory. I next run Terminal and switch to the Downloads directory. At the prompt I type in the following: sudo dpkg -i --force-all dcp1400lpr-1.1.2-1.386.deb It asks for my password which I type in and press Enter. I get the following errors: (Reading database ... 155195 files and directories currently installed.) Preparing to replace dcp1400lpr 1.1.2-1 (using dcp1400lpr-1.1.2-1.i386.deb) ... • Just installed 13.04 and everything is fine except I cannot connect to the internet. Any thoughts?

  I just installed Ubuntu 13.04 on my HP G62 laptop and the install went smoothly. I did the install off of a USB drive after trying ubuntu. While I was testing it, I connected to my Wireless with out issue and surfed a little. After the install, no wireless. I can still connect to my wireless network (at least it tells me I'm connected at full strength) but No servers can be found. I attempted to ping Google to no avail and I attempted to ping my router to no avail. I tried to then hard wire the machine and once again it told me that I was connected but I was not. When I ran dmesg, I got the following message: Warning: nss-myhostname is not installed. Changing the local hostname might make it unresolvabe. Please install nss-hostname! Is the hostname the issue? if so, how do I resolve it with out internet connection? If it's not the issue, how do I move forward? Thanks for any help. EDIT. I forgot to attach the image of my ifconfig if that might help.

• How to get hp printer to select correct trays on samba shared printer

  My first post here. Clean install of 12.04.1. Previously 10.04. Have been running a p2035n printer without problem. Now, no matter what paper tray I select it prints to the top "by-pass" feeder--not the lower main tray. And when I select to print to manual feed, it does not wait for me to put in paper (like it used to), but prints immediately. The printer is on a samba share and is physically plugged into a WinXP machine. Its uri is smb:///computername/p2035n. I have tried several of the offered drivers for this hp machine, and even tried generic-laser. Same result on all. Here are some other things I have tried (losing 2-3 hours of my time!): hp-check -t reports “error: User needs to be member of group 'lp' to enable print, scan & fax. ” and “warning: Printer is not HPLIP installed. Printers must use the hp: or hpfax: CUPS backend to function in HPLIP.” needed to download HPLIP 3.12.11 followed http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/install/index.html sh hplip-3.12.11-run says that before setup logout and then on login run hp-setup hp-setup could not find the printer ran hp-check -t again, found I was not in group lp ran hp-check --fix and it fixed that problem, asks for reboot rebooted after running update manager (new kernel) and hp-check -t shows no errors this time all the tray selections end up on the bypass tray hp-setup still cannot find the printer So is there a way to make this work? The changes are neither persisted nor the Mbean value is also left unmodified.... Please also be aware of the below changes in SSL implementation in 12c version 1. Certicom has been removed from WebLogic Server 12.1.1 and is no longer supported. 2. JSSE is the only SSL implementation that is supported in WebLogic Server 12.1.1. The following configuration changes have been made to be consistent with this support: The default for JSSEEnabled has been changed to true. Oracle recommends that you keep this value set to true. If JSSEEnabled is set to false, it will be ignored. That is, the MBean value will not be changed either in memory or the persisted config.xml file. • Chainloading GRUB2 from BURG

  I have an old PC with Puppy Linux in addition to Ubuntu and Windows XP. THis creates a LOT of menu entries (all of which I would like to keep): Ubuntu 10.04 Ubuntu Recovery Mode Memtest x86 Memtest Serial Windows XP Pro Precise Puppy Linux Precise Puppy TORAM Puppy 4.3.1 Puppy 4.3.1 TORAM Plop Boot Manager (for booting to USB, PC doesn't have BIOS option). Now, in my fancy shiny laptop I've gotten really attached to BURG, and would like a setup where I have a Windows icon, an Ubuntu icon, and an arrow that chainloads GRUB2 so that I can boot from USB or run Puppy if need be (all these entries will obviously not fit into the BURG theme I use, Lightness). The problem is, GRUB2 can't install the the beginning of a partition like it used to be able to (I am reluctant to specify andything with --force at the end), at least, without warning that warn: This is a BAD idea!. So I'm kind of at a loss here. I can't see how the folding option would work, because all of those other options would have the same icon once I unfolded (Lightness is non-text-based). If I do embed GRUB using grub-install /dev/sdax --force, how do I chainload it with BURG? Is there another way?

• DPKG errors after upgrade to 12.10

• How to build Visual Studio Setup projects (.vdproj) with TFS 2010 Build ?

  Out of the box, Team Foundation Server 2010 Build does not support building of setup projects (.vdproj). Although, you can modify DefaultTemplate.xaml or create your own in order to achieve this. I had to try bunch of different blog post's and finally got it working with a mixture of all those posts.   Since you don’t have to go through this pain again, I have uploaded the Template which you can use right away : https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=65B2671F6B93CDE9!310 Download and CheckIn this template into your source control. Modify your Build Definition to use this template. Unless you have CheckedIn the template, it wont show up in the template selection section in the process task of build definition. In your Visual Studio Solution Configuration Manager, make sure you specify to build the setup project also. You might get this warning in your build result: “The project file “*.vdproj” is not support by MSBuild and cannot be build. Hope it helps. • Get Started with JavaFX 2 and Scene Builder

  Up on otn/java is a very useful article by Oracle Java/Middleware/Core Tech Engineer Mark Heckler, titled, “How to Get Started (FAST!) with JavaFX 2 and Scene Builder.”  Heckler, who has development experience in numerous environments, shows developers how to develop a JavaFX application using Scene Builder “in less time than it takes to drink a cup of coffee, while learning your way around in the process”. He begins with a warning and a reassurance: “JavaFX is a new paradigm and can seem a bit imposing when you first take a look at it. But remember, JavaFX is easy and fun. Let's give it a try.” Next, after showing readers how to download and install JDK/JavaFX and Scene Builder, he informs the reader that they will “create a simple JavaFX application, create and modify a window using Scene Builder, and successfully test it in under 15 minutes.” Then readers download some NetBeans files:“EasyJavaFX.java contains the main application class. We won't do anything with this class for our example, as its primary purpose in life is to load the window definition code contained in the FXML file and then show the main stage/scene. You'll keep the JavaFX terms straight with ease if you relate them to the theater: a platform holds a stage, which contains scenes. SampleController.java is our controller class that provides the ‘brains’ behind the graphical interface. If you open the SampleController, you'll see that it includes a property and a method tagged with @FXML. This tag enables the integration of the visual controls and elements you define using Scene Builder, which are stored in an FXML (FX Markup Language) file. Sample.fxml is the definition file for our sample window. • Confusion about git; how to undo?

  I wanted to install some source code that was on git. Don't really know what that means, I've never used git before, but I figured it was time to learn so, I first installed git. Next I tried to clone the git directory of the software I want to install. I got a message saying "the authenticity of can't be established". I went ahead and ended up with another message saying warning such and such will be added to known hosts. I went ahead and it said something about hanging up on the connection. After searching the internet for a while I realized I didn't need git to install the software but now I have it installed and have added some host to some file or another. I'm concerned I've created some security issues I need to fix. Can anyone help me undo what I've done, or better understand what I've done. Did adding a git project open up my system? Beyond that can anyone tell me how git works. Everything I've found assumes I know stuff that I don't yet. Thanks

No source control system can automatically merge two edits to the same line of code. Conflict Alert solves this by warning you that you are heading down a path that will cause a manual merge later down the line. You choose whether you want to carry on, or talk to your teammate and find out what they are doing. Have you ever warned your teammates that you are doing a big refactor, and that they should ‘keep out of class X’? Conflict Alert tells them for you automatically by highlighting the sections of code that you have edited.   It doesn’t need to connect to your source control system, so it works no matter which you use. • Webcam doesn't work in Ubuntu 12.10

  I have Gembird cam68ut. On my Ubuntu 12.10 it shows black screen in cheese and guvcview. I tested it in win7, it works fine. Here what I found: It is a uvc compliant camera, I checked on the site: 18ec:3299 USB 2.0 PC Camera (model number QC3231) ArkMicro This webcam is report by lsusb: Bus 001 Device 004: ID 18ec:3299 Arkmicro Technologies Inc. Here is the output of dmesg | tail: uvcvideo: Found UVC 1.00 device USB2.0 PC CAMERA (18ec:3299) uvcvideo: UVC non compliance - GET_DEF(PROBE) not supported. Enabling workaround. input: USB2.0 PC CAMERA as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1a.0/usb1/1-1/1-1.5/1-1.5:1.0/input/input17 usbcore: registered new interface driver uvcvideo USB Video Class driver (1.1.1) When I run cheese (or guvcview), here what I get in terminal: libv4l2: error turning on stream: No space left on device (cheese:11797): cheese-WARNING **: Internal data flow error. I tried it on different usb slots with the same results The Webcam's microphone works, I can record audio with it Guys, any thoughts on what can be done to make it work?

• Using PreApplicationStartMethod for ASP.NET 4.0 Application to Initialize assemblies

  Sometimes your ASP.NET application needs to hook up some code before even the Application is started. Assemblies supports a custom attribute called PreApplicationStartMethod which can be applied to any assembly that should be loaded to your ASP.NET application, and the ASP.NET engine will call the method you specify within it before actually running any of code defined in the application. Lets discuss how to use it using Steps : 1. Add an assembly to an application and add this custom attribute to the AssemblyInfo.cs. Remember, the method you speicify for initialize should be public static void method without any argument. Lets define a method Initialize. You need to write : [assembly:PreApplicationStartMethod(typeof(MyInitializer.InitializeType), "InitializeApp")] 2. After you define this to an assembly you need to add some code inside InitializeType.InitializeApp method within the assembly. public static class InitializeType {     public static void InitializeApp()     {           // Initialize application     } } 3. You must reference this class library so that when the application starts and ASP.NET starts loading the dependent assemblies, it will call the method InitializeApp automatically. Warning Even though you can use this attribute easily, you should be aware that you can define these kind of method in all of your assemblies that you reference, but there is no guarantee in what order each of the method to be called. Hence it is recommended to define this method to be isolated and without side effect of other dependent assemblies. The method InitializeApp will be called way before the Application_start event or even before the App_code is compiled. This attribute is mainly used to write code for registering assemblies or build providers. Read Documentation I hope this post would come helpful.

• nvidia-settings error: nvidia driver not in use

  I have an Asus with GEFORCE GT520M CUDA (Optimus) and I am running Kubuntu 12.04, 64bit. I am trying to connect an external monitor through DVI and the monitor is not detected. Nvidia settings dont show properly and each time I fire them up there is a warning message: "You do not appear to be using the NVidia X driver. Please, edit...." (you probably know it and heard of this before). I have googled a lot and I have tried some things out but no luck so far. Is there a solution which has worked for someone out there? If so, please be very specific about what I need to do since I am really not good at using the terminal and generally new to ubuntu. I can use the terminal only to copy-paste things. :) Thanks in advance to everyone! ps. Seems like some people dealt with this by fixing the Nvidia settings problem but the instructions have never been clear enough for me to be able to understand.

• Directory error when trying to create a new user

  I added a second user 'shirley' in Settings - User Accounts, and set a password. The account type is Standard. In 11.04, this worked and I logged in and had a functioning desktop for this user. How is this done in 11.10? When I try to log in as this user I have this error: Nautilus could not create the required folder "/home/shirley/.config/nautilus". Before running Nautilus, please create the following folder, or set permissions such that Nautilus can create it. The only option then is to click OK, this dumps me out to full-screen Nautilus, like this: There is no launcher or visible way to start any programs. Print screen doesn't take a screengrab. The desktop is similar to this question but I get no terminal when I press CTRL+ALT+T. I have to press CTRL+ALT+F2 and restart from the terminal to get out of this. This answer is to install gnome-system-tools. Shouldn't I be able to add a second user with the default install? EDIT: I tried the deluser+adduser suggestion, there was no change after trying it. Here is what I got: tom@desktop:~$ sudo deluser shirley [sudo] password for tom: Removing user `shirley' ... Warning: group `shirley' has no more members. Done tom@desktop:~$ sudo adduser shirley Adding user `shirley' ... Adding new group `shirley' (1001) Adding new user shirley' (1001) with groupshirley' The home directory '/home/shirley' already exists. Not copying from `/etc/skel'. Enter new UNIX password: Retype new UNIX password: passwd: password updated successfully Changing user information for shirley Enter the new value, or press ENTER for the default Full Name []: Room Number []: Work Phone []: Home Phone []: Other []: Is the information correct? [Y/n] y What has gone so wrong with simply adding a second user? Am I the only one having this problem? I'd reinstall if that fixed things, but this is a fresh install only a few days old.

• Why is there no facility to overload static properties in PHP?

  Intro PHP allows you to overload method calls and property accesses by declaring magic methods in classes. This enables code such as: class Foo { public function __get($name) { return 42; } } $foo = new Foo; echo $foo->missingProperty; // prints "42" Apart from overloading instance properties and methods, since PHP 5.3.0 we can also overload static methods calls by overriding the magic method __callStatic. Something missing What is conspicuously missing from the available functionality is the ability to overload static properties, for example: echo Foo::$missingProperty; // fatal error: access to undeclared static property This limitation is clearly documented: Property overloading only works in object context. These magic methods will not be triggered in static context. Therefore these methods should not be declared static. As of PHP 5.3.0, a warning is issued if one of the magic overloading methods is declared static. But why? My questions are: Is there a technical reason that this functionality is not currently supported? Or perhaps a (shudder) political reason? Have there been any aborted attempts to add this functionality in the past? Most importantly, the question is not "how can I have dynamic static properties in userland PHP?". That said, if you know of an especially cute implementation based on __callStatic that you want to share then by all means do so.

• Terminal closing itself after 14.04 upgrade

  All was fine in 12.04, in this case I'm using virtualbox in Windows. Last days the warning message about my Ubuntu version no longer being supported was coming up pretty often, so, yesterday I finally decided to upgrade. The upgrading process ran ok, no errors, no warnings. After rebooting the errors started to happen. Just after booting up there were some errors about video, gnome, and video textures (sorry I didn't care in that moment so I don't remember well). Luckly that went away after installing VirtualBox additions. But the big problem here is that I can't use the terminal. It opens Ok when pressing control+alt+t, but most of the commands cause instant closing. For example, df, ls, mv, cd... usually work, although it has closed few times. But 'find' causes instant close. 'apt-get' update kills it too, just after it gets the package list from the sources, when it starts processing them. I've tried xterm, everything works and I have none of that problems. I have tried reinstalling konsole, bash-static, bash-completion, but nothing worked. I have no idea what to do as there is no error message to search for the cause. It seems something related to bash, but that's all I know.

Below are the steps... 1)Go to Start ----> Run  2)Type services.msc  3)In services.msc search for "Windows Firewall" and Right Click on "Windows Firewall"---->Select Stop. 4)Access the Weblogic URL  If the issue is resolved after disabling firewall, Request your  OS System Admin to open the port 7001 at the firewall end to access the application

• Software Center empty "No usefulness from server" "no username in config file"

  I upgraded to 12.04 LTS and ran Software Center while a few things were running, and crashed. (2 GB RAM on a Netbook.) On reboot, Ubuntu One interface would not find any programs, neither installed (to run) nor available for download. So I launched Software Center, which opens, but does nothing. I click "Close" button and get a "Force Quit?" box. So I quit. Did research, learned to run Software Center from Terminal: 2012-04-29 23:14:36,978 - softwarecenter.backend.reviews - WARNING - Could not get usefulness from server, no username in config file Then tried the below without success: Reinstallation of software center: sudo apt-get install --reinstall software-center Didn't work. Found this in a post: remove the config file for software-center then log out and back in sudo rm -rf ~/.config/software-center Didn't work. Reinstalled Software Center with Synaptic Package Manager. Still no dice! And I am a Linux newbie, so I don't know where the Dickens that config file is. Help appreciated.
