• Admin user runs slower than the guest account

  My user is the Admin, it runs fine, not bugs or anything, I used Ubuntu Tweak for a few things like logging options and the sidebar and Unity Tweak for hotcornes and minimize window and that's about it. My second user (for my mother) is faster. I don't know how or why. Let me know what I need to enter on the terminal to give you more info, if you think it's normal also let me know. I have a Compaq Presario CQ56, Ubuntu 14.04 64bit dual boot with Windows 7 Premium, 3GB of ram DDR3, Celeron(R) Dual-Core CPU T3500 @ 2.10GHz × 2.

  Can I use WUBI as an offline installer? I already had the .iso file of ubuntu 12.10 - i386, and inside the iso is wubi.exe. For example: I will do a partition of, E:30gb then i will target E: in wubi so that it will be Ubuntu then use the .iso file to install it on E: My Computer: Acer Aspire 5750-6683 i5-2450m processor Is it fine to do a dual boot? Can I run Windows 7 Home Premium OS, with the custom theme and boot screen, can that effect dual booting? I just don't want to damage any of files or either any of OS And if I can't boot any of the operating systems what should I do? Can I avoid doing a clean install if that ever happens?

  I have an AMD A6-3400m. When installing ubuntu 12.10 the CPU gets too hot. When I go to see the cpu usage not see anything unusual. I think she is working at or above the specifications of the cpu. I can not finish the installation because the notebook warms both the system disarms and the cooler is maximum. Do not know if it's just me but I never had a good experience using Linux on AMD. When I used Intel these problems did not happen. What is happening can? Ps: The laptop works perfectly in Windows 7 Home Premium 64. No crashes, no overheat, simply works.

• Super slow and laggy?

  I'm a native Windows user, running 7 Home Premium atm. In the past I installed Ubuntu 10 on my netbook I believe, but was a bit 'scared' by it. Anyways, I made a partition on my desktop pc, 100gb and installed Ubuntu 12.10 on it. It was pretty slow first thought it had to install updates or something, so I rebooted it. Now after the login it looks like everything freezes, I can move my mouse only ,but that's it! I can see my desktop and launcher, but the task bar doesn't display time and misc system info, only a black bar, I downloaded the android SDK pack and installed vlc media player before I rebooted. My computer info: - 1tb HDD - 8gb ddr3 ram - ATI Radeon 4890 videocard (1gb) - AMD Phenom 2 x4 black 3,2ghz CPU(64 bits) Thanks in advantage!

  I want to use Ubuntu. I have Win 7 Home Premium 32-bit right now... I used to have 64 on this laptop (Toshiba Satellite c650) but my disc got a ring of death. Intel Penium CPU B940 2.00GHz, 4GB RAM Also, I'm guessing I need an image mounter such as PowerISO to install Ubuntu, if I don't have a DVD lying around that I can mount to? I'm a noob. Thanks for your help, in advance. EDIT: My question wasn't clear... can my processor and RAM handle 64-bit Ubuntu? Hell of a lot nicer than Win7

• Wrong/corrupted icon in dash

  I am facing a problem with the dash not showing proper/actual icons for certain applications such as Google Chrome and Mozilla Daily Mail. Instead of getting the standard icons for these applications, I get to see a default icon for all the applications. I have added a snapshot to show the problem. The icons that are shown in the launcher once launched or in the /usr/share/applications directory are proper. I have tried rebuilding the icon cache, but that did not help. I have also tried switching to other icons themes. This issue does not appear with Gnome Shell or KDE. I have also tried deleting ~/.local/share/applications/menu-xdg, there was none in the first place. I am using Ubuntu 12.10. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

• Ubuntu 12.04 installer does not recognize Windows 7

  I recently purchased an ASUS N56VZ-ES71 laptop which came with Windows 7 Home Premium installed on it. I wish to dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 on it. I shrank the hard drive partitions to leave about 150 GB unallocated for Ubuntu 12.04. When I boot the Live CD of Ubuntu and attempt to install, the installer does not recognize any other operating systems. Through reading a few questions, I have found that this is due to a GPT partitioning table that Windows uses. I ran boot-repair as per other threads' suggestions. This was my output: http://paste.ubuntu.com/1176988/ I suppose my question is: how do I proceed in order to get the installer to recognize Windows, so that I don't have to erase the current partition table and can get a safe install?   Is a cycle of hiring permanent staff and then making them redundant after 1-2 years due to 're-alignment of business goals' / 'changes in priorities' normal in the technology industry? This behaviour hardly seems justifiable, and here in the UK it is questionable whether it is even legal. I begin to wonder whether some of this behaviour I have seen in this economy is due to the companies involved not wanting to pay premium rates for contractors (who I must admit in my opinion often offer no more value), and using 'redundancy' e.g. "sorry joe, you're not needed any more", as a convenient way of recreating the contracting scenario. It seems in this situation if you're a valued developer your job probably is never at risk, but I can understand it being a worry for people and I don't think it is fair on those who are mislead into thinking that they have a longer term career with the companies which do this.

• Why have column borders gone missing in Rhythmbox gui?

  My theme doesn't use shading, only borders/outlines. Since a few weeks ago Rhythmbox has stopped drawing all borders so that I can't see columns or sections very well. Even my scrollbars are not being drawn correctly. This makes the gui really hard to use. When I change themes it seems that Rhythmbox has changed its gui to use only shading to delineate sections, tabs, columns, etc.. Rhythmbox seems to be the only program that has this problem so I'm guessing this is a Rhythmbox thing, but not sure. My theme is not updated for gtk 3.6 Maybe that is the issue? Anyone know what's going on?

• Ubuntu will not install on my Dell Inspiron 580

  I'm trying to install ubuntu on my Inspiron 580 (Intel Core i3 4Gb Ram Intel HD Graphics) but am having no success installing from CD or Windows installer all result in a purple rapidly flashing screen with the Ubuntu with 5 dots below it splash which doesn't change. I have tried releases 12.04.1 LTS (CD and windows installer), 11.10 (CD after reading it was certified for the 580) and today 12.10 (CD) all produce the same install failure. My Dell 1704PT monitor is connected to the intel HD board using an HDMI to DVI adaptor though I have tried a VGA cable and still got the same flashing screen. Any help gratefully received as i want to get away from Windows 7 Home Premium.

  On my first job interview, I was asked why did I build my own CMS? Why not to use one of existing CMS, Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal...? At first, I was stunned. I couldn't immediately recall all of my reasons for building my own CMS, but this was definitely one of the main reasons: It's my code and if I want to change something in that CMS (which I often have to do, because each website I build needs CMS with different functions) it's not a big problem. For some time I've been using Wordpress and one of the main things that distracted me from using it was discovering bugs in code that wasn't written by me and this bugs were often, especially if I made some changes to CMS or added a plugin... Here, I can find these 8 reasons why NOT to build own CMS: It won’t meet users’ needs It’s too much work It won’t be a standard solution It won’t be extendible fast enough It won’t be tested well enough It won’t be easily changeable It won’t add any value Create content, not functionality Quote from the same page: So the main question to ask yourself is: ‘Why am I really trying to re-solve a problem that has already been solved before?’ Well, I definitely agree that it's hard to invent CMS that hasn't been already invented, but on other hand, I think every CMS is (or should be) individual... it maybe won't have a million of functions, it will have 3 functions but their usage will be clear (to a user) and do all that one site needs to have. I think also that it is not good to give to a client a CMS with a lot of functions that are never used and it looks probably more professional when website and CMS together look like one product. I would also like to comment some quote parts: "It’s too much work" - I agree, but when using existing CMS and customizing it to website needs and can sometimes be very hard job or mission impossible. • Gravatar XML-RPC request problem in Objective-C

  Hi all, I'm trying to incorporate some Gravatar functionality using its XML-RPC API in an iPhone app I'm writing. I grabbed the Cocoa XML-RPC Framework by Eric Czarny (http://github.com/eczarny/xmlrpc) and it works well when I tested it with some of the Wordpress methods. However, when I try to use the Gravatar API, I always receive a response of "Error code: -9 Authentication error". I think I'm constructing the request correctly, but I've been wracking my brain and can't seem to figure it out. Maybe someone has some experience with this API or can see what I'm doing wrong.   I've been coding websites for a couple of years now, mostly in php and xhtml. I come from the design world, but I'm proud of doing standart compliant websites and great interfaces. Also used Wordpress and loved it. Most of the time there were really simple commercial websites, with no database included, where everything is done from scratch. Every page is parsed through an index?page=xxx and But I have a few prospects that are larger websites (let's call them 'medium sized websites') where I feel I'm lacking the following: How to dispach or render the pages (MVC controller instead of index?page=???) Proper page hierarchy and easy breadcrumbs implementation Auto generation of navigation menu, or an easy way to maintain them? Clean URLs Form validation Easy database support I really don't know if I should be looking into php scripts, and refine my skills or get into a CMS (like drupal) or a PHP framework. I found Wordpress very assuring and didn't feel trapped into crazy conventions, but I feel is not the right tool for this. I hate the CMS Page with the big textbox as I am used to code every page by hand my pages are not a title and a textbox. Got the feeling? My php skills are sort of medium/low still, but I would like to hear some thoughts of what I should learn to take the next step!
