• GWT Acegi alternative

  I'm starting new project. The client interface is based on GWT (and GXT) I have no say it's predetermined. However I can pick and choose as far as server side so I can have some fun and hopefully learn something new in the process. Some requirements are : Exchange with server will be through use of JSON, most if not all of UI will be generated by GWT (JS) on the client, so the client/serve exchange will be limited to data exchange as much as possible No Hibernate (it's not really supported on the proprietary db I will be connecting to). In the past projects people would use JDBC or iBATIS Some sort of IoC (I'm thinking Guice just to stick with Google) Some sort of Security framework based on LDAP. In the past we would use Spring security (Acegi) but it wasn't ideal and we had to customize it a lot So basically should I stick with tried-and-true Spring/Acegi or try something based on Guice? And what that "something" would be and how mature is it?

• Why does a newly created EF-entity throw an ID is null exception when trying to save?

  I´m trying out entity framework included in VS2010 but ´ve hit a problem with my database/model generated from the graphical interface. When I do: user = dataset.UserSet.CreateObject(); user.Id = Guid.NewGuid(); dataset.UserSet.AddObject(user); dataset.SaveChanges(); {"Cannot insert the value NULL into column 'Id', table 'BarSoc2.dbo.UserSet'; column does not allow nulls. INSERT fails.\r\nThe statement has been terminated."} The table i´m inserting into looks like so: -- Creating table 'UserSet' CREATE TABLE [dbo].[UserSet] ( [Id] uniqueidentifier NOT NULL, [Name] nvarchar(max) NOT NULL, [Username] nvarchar(max) NOT NULL, [Password] nvarchar(max) NOT NULL ); GO -- Creating primary key on [Id] in table 'UserSet' ALTER TABLE [dbo].[UserSet] ADD CONSTRAINT [PK_UserSet] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED ([Id] ASC); GO Am I creating the object in the wrong way or doing something else basic wrong?

We have a set of tables and views that merely store some config data for embedded devices. this schema is change-prone and do not really required lots of logic, beyond some validation rules. so we considered using a RAD tool for maintaining these CRUDS. In first stage: Dynamic Data But the community size, books absence and the last modification dates of the MSDN articles (~July 2008) makes me want to hear your experiences. (actually DynamicData comes as a part of the ASP.Net MVC2 project) What has been your experience with Dynamic Data? And... What is your favorite ASP.Net RAD alternative? Why? • Zend DB MYSQL Wrapper

  All, I have a PHP application written in Zend Framework with MVC style. I plan to use Zend_DB to connect to the MySQL database and process queries. I am looking for a wrapper class which makes it easy to use Zend_DB class. This wrapper class will have a constructor that connects to the Mysql db using Zend_DB. It will also have a method to return a singleton instance for each and every db connection made. Something like: $pptDB = PPTDB::getInstance(); $pptDB->setFetchMode(PPTDB::FETCH_OBJ); $result = $pptDB->fetchRow('SELECT * FROM bugs WHERE bug_id = 2'); echo $result->bug_description; Where class PPTDB extends Zend_DB Is this something feasible to have? • Properties in partial class not appearing in Data Sources window!

  Entity Framework has created the required partial classes. I can add these partial classes to the Data Sources window and the properties display as expected. However, if I extend any of the classes in a separate source file these properties do not appear in the Data Sources window even after a build and refresh. All properties in partial classes across source files work as expected in the Data Sources window except when the partial class has been created with EF. EDIT: After removing the offending table for edm designer, adding back in it all works are expected. Hardly a long term solution. Anyone else come across a similar problem?

• Problem with constants in application.ini after PHP upgrade

  Hi, I've upgraded PHP on my local dev system to version 5.3.0, and there is some problem when I use constants in application.ini - following manual http://framework.zend.com/manual/en/learning.quickstart.create-project.html I have: bootstrap.path = APPLICATION_PATH "/Bootstrap.php" which leads to: Warning: require_once(APPLICATION_PATH/Bootstrap.php) [function.require-once]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in Zend\Application.php on line 320 any ideas? SOLVED: Actually name of my constant was _DIR_APPLICATION (code above was copied from ZF manual) - problem lies in this underscore at the begining - it seems that parse_ini_file() in PHP 5.3.0 doesn't replace constants named like this. Short test - you need two files: test.ini bootstrap.path = _DIR_APPLICATION "/Bootstrap.php" bootstrap.class = "Bootstrap" and test.php <?php define('_DIR_APPLICATION', 'test'); $data = parse_ini_file('test.ini'); print_r($data); try to run, then change constant name to 'DIR_APPLICATION' (in both files) and compare result ;)

• Persisting details in Master Detail relation EF4 POCO

  Scenario: Entity Framework 4 , POCO templates and Master Detail relation. Lets say I have a master type like this: //partial implementation of master entity partial class Master { public void AddDetail(x,y,z) { var detail = new Detail() { X = x, Y = y, Z = z, }; //add the detail to the master this.Details.Add(detail); } } If I then add a master instance to my context and commit, the details will not be saved: var masterObject = new Master(); masterObject.AddDetail(1,2,3); myContext.MasterSet.AddObject(masterObject); Is there any way to make the details to be persisted by reachabillity when using POCO templates? Or any other way? the Details collection in the Master entity is a FixUpCollection, so it ought to track the changes IMO. So, any ideas how to make this work W/O killing the POCO'ness too much?

The requirement is to find the no. of visits the user has done on the site. Instead of checking each time during posts or gets to the server. Is there something in php to find out if the session is a new one. Zen framework is also used for the app.

• Can't access stored procedure from entities

  Hello I'm using entity framework that came with 3.5sp1. And in visual studio I have imported function so it shows under "Function Imports" in the "Model Browser". I have assigned all rights to the user that connects to the database. But it doesnt show in the intellisense when I type "_entities.", only my other entities shows there. I opened the designer file and couldnt find it there either..... The stored procedure should return a scalar datetime value, and not an "entity" What might be wrong here? /M

• ORM For .Net ON Oracle

  I'm gonna start a new project soon, using .Net 3.5 and Winform on an Oracle database. We were planning on using an ORM, NHibernate was suggested by our architect. Since I'm personnaly more familiar with Entity Framework, i thought it would be easier to use than NHibernate. But since there aren't any official provider from Oracle, we are resistant on using it. So my Question, I Looked at different provider available and found some: DevArt DataDirct EFOracleProvider So I'd like to have some feed back on each of them, pros and con, missing feature, stuff like that, from those using them, and know if we're better of with NHibernate? • Zipping Rx IObservable with infinite number set

  I have a IObservable [named rows in the sample below] from Reactive extensions framework and I want to add index numbers to each object it observes. I've tried to implement this using Zip function: rows.Zip(Enumerable.Range(1, int.MaxValue), (row, index) => new { Row = row, Index = index }) .Subscribe(a => ProcessRow(a.Row, a.Index), () => Completed()); .. but unfortunately this throws ArgumentOutOfRangeException: Specified argument was out of the range of valid values. Parameter name: disposables Am I understanding the Zip function wrong or is there a problem with my code? The Range part of the code doesn't seem to be the problem and the IObservable isn't yet receiving any events.

  The manual on Zend_Application_Module_Autoloader states the following: When using module bootstraps with Zend_Application, an instance of Zend_Application_Module_Autoloader will be created by default for each discrete module, allowing you to autoload module resources. Source: http://framework.zend.com/manual/zh/zend.loader.autoloader-resource.html#zend.loader.autoloader-resource.module This requires me to create an empty bootstrap class for each of my modules or else resource autoloading per module won't work with the build-in autoloader. Now I have two questions What is a discrete module? Is there a way to have this resource autoloader registered by default for each module without the need to create a bootstrap file for each module? I want it available in each module and creating so many empty bootstrap classes is something i'd rather prevent.

  Recently I've began experimenting with ASP.NET MVC and the Entity Framework. Since my hostingprovider only provides me with MySQL I've been trying to set that up. Locally everything works fine, but after I publish it I get the following error: [ProviderIncompatibleException: The store provider factory type 'MySql.Data.MySqlClient.MySqlClientFactory' does not implement the IServiceProvider interface. Use a store provider that implements this interface.] Since I'm rather inexperienced with the configuring this and google is lacking a good answer I thought I'd try here. My best guess is something missing in the web.config file, but can't really make out what it is. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  I'm using the zend currency module to manage currencies in a web app. I can't figure out how to create a custom format for my currencies, since there are no examples on the documentation pages: http://framework.zend.com/manual/en/zend.currency.options.html From what I read there, I could use the format parameter to set a format, but I can't find a way how. Does anyone have a good code example for this problem? currently I do the following: $currency->setFormat(array (display' => Zend_Currency::USE_SYMBOL)); That works to display only the symbol, but I'm also interested in putting an extra space after or before the symbol and to display currencies like this: "$ 1,234.56 USD" "€ 1.234,56 EUR"

• There is no Key attribute in EF CTP 5

  According to the blog post here Data Annotations in the Entity Framework there should be an attribute for a column called "Key" which allows you to mark the primary key of an entity. However I cannot locate this in .Net 3.5 or .Net 4.0. What have I missed? I've included the reference to EntityFramework.dll and I've checked all the attributes under System.ComponentModel.DataAnnotations but I cannot locate it. I have set my project to .Net 4.0 full (not client profile). Any ideas?

• VS 2010 Server Explorer Database Showing No Tables

  I'm working on a .Net application that needs to read from an Oracle 10g database behind Siebel. In VS 2010 Server Explorer, I've created a connection using the OracleClient type connector with a reference to the Oracle TNS service name as the "server name." The "Test Connection" button shows that the connection is successful. However, in the Server Explorer, when I go to expand the Tables, no tables are shown. I know for a fact that there are 3000+ tables in the database (thanks Siebel). Anyone know what's happening here? I'd like to create an Entity Framework 4.0 Entity Data Model... Thanks for the help! • What's the best way to paginate a dataset with Zend_Framework and Doctrine?

What's the best / your favorite way to paginate a dataset with an application built upon Zend_Framework and Doctrine as your ORM? I'm new to Doctrine. I'm calling the model directly from a View Helper, bypassing the Controller, although I'm still interested if your solution uses controllers. I did see one article on this topic: http://ciaranmcnulty.com/blog/2009/06/Simplify-pagination-logic-using-a-custom-zend-paginator-adapter Devzone has an article using Doctrine, Zend Framework OR Pear, but none of those options mention a #ZF app that uses Doctrine.

  Hey Guys I have a website and am planning to develop a mobile version of it for the iphone, blackberry and android. My website is a social network built on PHP Zend framework. Now all these mobile apps are going to be having the same functionality like the website. I am little ignorant about this - but from a high level I understand that all these mobile apps should not have to write any backend logic. For every functionality - they will simply make a web service API call to interact with the backend. So does that mean, for every functionality I need to create a web service method. Can the existing code be re used - I'm a little lost - Can someone shed some light on this matter or point me in the right direction (like some articles) Thanks

  I'm starting to read in-depth on the .NET framework, and its Common Language Runtime. I'm reading a .NET overview by Microsoft and I'm not sure what is meant by this statement. Code that targets the runtime is known as managed code, while code that does not target the runtime is known as unmanaged code. How do you target the Common Language Runtime? I know its defaulted when developing in Visual Studio, but how would you specifically target the CLR? What code when developing a .NET application wouldn't target the CLR, and thereby be called unmanaged code?

  I am using ASP.NET MVC 2 and C# with Entity Framework 4.0 to code against a normalised SQL Server database. A part of my database structure contains a table of entries with foreign keys relating to sub-tables containing drivers, cars, engines, chassis etc. I am following the Nerd Dinner tutorial which sets up a repository for dinners which is fair enough. Do I do one for drivers, one for engines, one for cars and so on or do I do one big one for entries? Which is the best practise for this type of work? I am still new to this method of coding.

• Why does my server hang when I call a page over files_get_content?

  I am trying to get content from a wordpress installation on a subdomain of my server. I tried that with file_get_content and also with Zend_Http_Client. $client = new Zend_Http_Client(Zend_Registry::get('CONFIG')->static->$name->$lang); $content = $client->request()->getBody(); As long as I run in on my localhost, it works fine. As soon as it runs on the same server as the subdomain, it hangs forever (timeout). • Passing an instantiated class to concrete class derived by Castle Windsor

  I have a system that I'm using to test some new architecture. I have the following setup (In MVC2 .Net - C Sharp): View < Controller < Service < Repository < DB I'm using Castle Windsor as my DI (IoC) controller, and this is working just fine in both the Service and Repo layers. However, I'm now at a point where I would like to pass an Entity Framework (DatabaseNameEntity) to the constructor to the Service, and then to the Repo, so that I have something similar to a Unit of Work pattern per request (This feels like what I'm trying to achieve anyway) - and I'm having trouble working out how this can be done using Castle Windsor. Am I going off on a silly tangent? Any pointers appreciated.
