• Page zoom slows down page rendering

  I'm building a map viewer much like Google maps and i've run into an interesting performance problem when a page is zoomed (i.e ctrl + OR ctrl -). It seems to affect all major browsers but Firefox has the worst problems as far as I can tell. The problem is that when the page is zoomed panning by dragging the mouse seems really sluggish. This can even be seen on Google maps. Pan the map left and right and note how smooth it is. Now press ctrl+ (3 or 4 times). Now pan the map left and right in the same way. Notice the difference? Does anyone know how I can minimize this problem?

  A very simple situation. I'm working on an application in Delphi 2007 which is often compiled as 'Release' but still runs under a debugger. And occasionally it will run under SilkTest too, for regression testing. While this is quite fun I want to do something special... I want to detect if my application is running within a debugger/regression-tester and if that's the case, I want the application to know which tool is used! (Thus, when the application crashes, I could report this information in it's error report.) Any suggestions, solutions?

• Best ASP.NET reporting engine with custom reports creation ability

  We need to choose the reporting engine for our ASP.NET application. The main functional requirement is an ability for end users (not programmers, just normal users) to create custom reports. We will be using SQL Server as a database so I am aware of some options: SQL Server Reporting services, Crystal Reports, Active Reports, even WindwardReports. But frankly speaking I've never used any of those except Reporting services and it's quite difficult to choose which one suits the best to customer needs of custom reports creation. Is it possible to get some pros and cons for these options or at least your advice on what would be better to use in this case. Thanks a lot.

• How do you handle very old browsers on your site?

  Hi. We have a non-profit web site that got about 5 million hits in May. Of those, about 5,700 were from IE 5.x or lower; about 4,000 were from folks with Netscape 4.x or lower. We know that the current site's layout works for newer browsers and we're testing it on IE6 as well (along with Chrome, Opera, Safari, and Firefox). How do you handle the folks with the older browsers? Because of jQuery libraries and such, the pages might not function correctly on those old browsers. Is there an easy way to show a text-only version on browsers that can't handle the CSS and jQuery goodies? How do large sites handle this sort of thing? I've used the @embed to hide the stylesheet from Netscape 4.x, but not sure beyond that.

  I have mirrored the ubuntu archive repository (I must say it's rather huge). Then, I can apt-get install with no problem, but it prompts with following warning: WARNING: The following packages cannot be authenticated! xxxx, xxxx, ... Install these packages without verification [y/N]? Well, you can always install it. But, I can't install from the ubuntu software GUI. Which require trusted source. So, 1. How to force the GUI to install untrusted package? 2. Should I configure GPG to receive some public keys? (I've already installed ubuntu-keyring, debian-keyring, but it still untrusted) 3. Should I configure GPG to receive unknown keys from some specific keyservers, automatically?

• Best Practice - Validating Input In Simple GUI Application?

  I'm writing a GUI app with wxwidgets in C++ for one of my programming classes. We have to validate input and throw custom exceptions if it doesn't meet certain conditions. My question is, what is best practice when it comes to this? Should I write a seperate function that checks for errors, and have my event handler's call that function? • Development team collaboration via Google Wave

  I hope I am not repeating any previously asked question. Anyway, so Google Wave is nice and shiny and sounds like a lot of folks(at least at Google I/O :) used it in a useful for work(!) way. I've been beta-testing Google Wave for sometime now, but can't quite grasp how to improve our workflow using it. We have a medium size team of developers that are spread out around US and Europe and naturally most of communication is happening via IM and Skype and email of course. So what are specific things that could be offloaded to Google Wave to improve collaboration by leaps and bounds(meaning not just replacing IM with nicer IM)?

• Is there a way to force HTTPS protocol in a Kohana 2.3 site?

  I've got a site built on top of Kohana 2.3 which I now have to make all links https. I set this in application/config/config.php. $config['site_protocol'] = 'https'; This makes all links on the site use the https protocol. Except, when I first enter the site via http, it will not automatically forward to https. Is there a way to make Kohana do this, or do I just need to do some custom coding?   I want to setup a click event trigger in jQuery for certain anchor tags. I want to open certain links in a new tab while ignoring ones with a certain class (before you ask I cannot put classes on the links I am trying to catch as they come from a CMS). I want to exclude links with class "button" OR "generic_link" I have tried $(".content_box a[class!=button]").click(function (e) { e.preventDefault(); window.open($(this).attr('href')); }); But that doesn't seem to work, also how do I do an OR statement to include "generic_link" in the exclusion? • Das keyboard boot camp

  So I recently started using a Das keyboard ultimate with my mac and after installing the key re-mapping, it basically works ok. I have a couple of issues with the set up involving boot camp. When I start up the computer, which key maps to option in order to let me pick which operating system to boot into? I think the bios is detecting the keys along the bottom as alt or something like that and I am not sure what to do here. In windows 7, the " and @ keys are switched. How do I get windows to remap this back to the US english settings? Thanks for any help you can provide.

  I have some data files that should be distributed with my program. Using dist_pkgdata_DATA in Makefile.am, I get these files installed to /usr/local/data/share/package-name. The problem is that data is read-only, and my program needs to modify it. Playing with dist_sharedstate_DATA, dist_localstate_DATA, dist-data_DATA varibles, I got different installation directories, like /usr/local/com, usr/local/var, but data is always read-only. How can I distribute modifiable data files with my package? I need some common directory for all users, or maybe local data in a user directory.

Tml.Runtime.Seq as s -> s.ToExpression() | _ -> failwith "bad expression" If I omit the type coercions on the return values F# will infer the return type of the function to ConstantExpression. My first thought was to explicitly mark the return type as being : #Expression, but that didn't work. Is there a more elegant way of doing this that doesn't involve manually casting return types to the most generic type? Thanks.

• Contact form contents spilling out of container div on window resize.

  I'm trying to get my contact form to not spill its contents out of the parent div when I resize the viewport. How can I go about doing this? I have used float clearing to prevent this as I understood it was supposed to be used, but it isn't working. What should I do to fix this? here is the page in question. also I have a similar problem with the header.. the menu drops below the header text if I make the browser window smaller.   i want to to pass class method as and a default argument to another class method, so that i can re-use the method as a @classmethod @classmethod class foo: def func1(self,x): do somthing; def func2(self, aFunc = self.func1): # make some a call to afunc afunc(4) this why when the method func2 is called within the class aFunc defaults to self.func1, but i can call this same function from outside of the class and pass it a different function at the input. i get NameError: name 'self' is not defined

  Let's say I am writing installation script for the program which contains executable file and shared library. By default, this script places executable to /usr/local/bin, and shared library to /usr/local/lib. In this case my program may be executed by any user by typing its name in the command line. Suppose that user selects custom installation directory, like ~/myprogram/. Is it user's responsibility to ensure that my program may be executed, or my installation script must do this?
