  • Quit my job (for a new job). Old job wants me to be available for contracting. Steps to take?

    The company I am leaving has asked that I make myself available to answer questions and/or debug programs occasionally should the need arise. I'm not opposed to this. After searching google for some king of standard contract for this sort of thing, I didn't see any. Is there a standard contract for this sort of thing that you use? Are there any other steps I should take to ensure this kind of arrangement works smoothly?

  • Skype chat opens full screen and I can't get off it

    Skype was working perfect and then all of a sudden the chat box was full screen sized. Once you click on the Skype icon from the side bar it takes you straight to the full sized chat windows (By full sized I mean the side bar, top bar, and the programs close buttons disappear) I have uninstalled Skype and installed again but the issue is still occurring. I looked about but couldn't find an answer, thanks for any help!

  • wierd keyboard problem

    just installed ubuntu on a acer extensa 5620 laptop. The keyboard works fine except when i want to type things that require me to use ctrl+alt+(any key), i can't use ctrl+alt+(any key) in any program, I can open terminal with ctrl+alt+t tho... and ctrl+(any key) and alt+(any key) seems to work. Also I just installed the game Heroes of Newerth and neither alt or ctrl key seems to work in the game. Any answer would be appreciated!

    I was reading Learn C the Hard Way when I stumbled upon and followed the instructions for installing Valgrind, the C debugger. However, when I ran ./configure to setup build configurations, I got checking for the kernel version... unsupported (3.0.0-17-generic) configure: error: Valgrind works on kernels 2.4, 2.6 I am running Ubuntu 11.10, on the kernel Linux 3.0.0-17-generic x86_64. The answer may be obvious but I'm not acquainted with Linux: How do I get Valgrind working on my computer? Thanks.

I am currently programming a web app that has some models that have properties that can only be from a set of values, e.g. (not actual example as the web app data confidential): light-type = sphere / cube / cylinder The light type can only be the above three values but according to TPP I should always code as if they could change and place their values in a config file. As there are several incidents of this throughout the app, my question is: Should I store possibly values like these in: a config file: 'light-types' = array(sphere, cube, cylinder), 'other-type' = value, 'etc = etc-value a single table in a database with one line for each config item a database with a table for each config item (e.g. table: light_types; columns: id, name) some other way?   • Tomcat / Railo stop responding with no error output

    This is going to sound very vague and I'm sure it will be voted down for not giving enough information however I don't really have any to give as you will see. We have an AWS instance running Amazon Linux, Apache, Tomcat and Railo and from time to time the Tomcat/Railo simply stops responding to requests and there are no errors output in the catalina.out file or any of the other log files in the Tomcat logs directory. When I issue the command to restart Tomcat/Railo the restart scripts sits there for a while then says that Tomcat has not responded so it has killed it off and then it starts up again and everything is fine until it happens again, anything from a couple of minutes to a couple of days later. I have done my best to check other logs on the server but have found no messages at all to indicate why Tomcat/Railo has given up and stopped responding. Can anyone suggest any reason why it might be doing this and / or any other log file(s) that we could check to see what is happening. Thanks. Andrew.

    This is something I was never taught. I have seen alot of different types of authoring styles. I code primarily in Java and Python. I was wondering if there was a standard authoring style or if everything is freestyle.     In cleaning up an answer today, I noted the following: LTS desktops get updates for three years LTS servers get updates for five years An Ubuntu desktop is (essentially) a superset of server packages. So in the fourth and fifth year, if LTS Server gets Kernel updates*, are these also provided for LTS Desktop? What about other core-system stuff? I realise the Kernel is a little special because there is a -server variant but are updates pushed for -generic (et al) too?

  • Moving from root to www

    I've read tons of questions but I can't find the answer to this seemingly obvious issue. I'm moving my WordPress site from domain.com to www.domain.com so that I can use CloudFlare. I did the change in WP and everything works fine, with domain.com redirecting correctly. Do I need to add the www site in GWT (and remove domain.com) or will it keep tracking the website correctly thanks to the redirections?

  • Adding 1 subdomain using .htaccess

    Alright, so unlike other solutions I only want one subdomain to appear to be added. Say I wanted example.com/folder/page.php to be displayed as foo.example.com/folder/page.php, how would I go about doing this? The foo will never change, and it only needs to be for one page. Various other sites have been unable to provide an answer, thanks in advance. Edit: Oh, and I also have full DNS records to the domain.

    for those of you who can help me..I recently installed ubuntu 12.04 lts and i got this screen flickering at the log on screen...i googled this problem and i found out that laptops with nvidia graphics have it...but i have intel hd graphics in mine...i tried "nomodeset" and it was solved but my screen resolution changed to 1024x768 and i couldn't change it to 1366x768...so im using ubuntu 11.10 for now...what should i do?? For those who can help me..i'm a newbie at ubuntu and i know nothing..so please detail your answer.... Anyone??
