  • Security considerations when giving access to SQL Server db for a web application

    I need to expose our SQL Server 2008 database for an access from a asp.net web application. This is a new task for me, so I would like to know what basic security requirements are there for configuring software and hardware components of web server and DB Server. Is it OK to have both Web Server (Windows Server 2008) with IIS holding ASP.NET application and SQL Server 2008 on the same machine? Should I have to install additional firewall, like Forefront TMG? Should it be on separate computer? In case a web application is hosted on an external web hosting privider server and SQL Server DB on a our internal server what are "pro's" and "con's" of such configuration?

    I've used article tags on websites. My understanding and practice is to use the article tag for publication content. I always use HTML/HTML5 tags as their intended purposes and not at will. Recently, I've seen an HTML template that uses the article tag for the non-publication page content such as the content of an About Us page or any other generic page. I asked the why it was used this way and the (vague) explanation was that it had to do with the way the iPad read the tag. Is this true?

    What's the better way to manage the image files of my app? i've been thinking about the way that i do right now (save the image as a BLOB IN db), and i ask myself if would be better to manage the image as text in my DB, i mean, convert the image to hex(length of 500), then save in the db as text, and when calling it convert it from hex to image, or something like that, but what do you consider as an Experienced Progammer that is the better way?     I Am using an external mysql-server to work with akonadi. (using KDE4). Now I could solve all problems with it, but I still have to apply some settings to the "mysql-global.conf"-file of the server. That's what is suggested for example: # wait 365d before dropping the DB connection (default:8h) wait_timeout=31536000 So I tried to change this setting via the mysql console. But it's not reflected anywhere in the /etc/mysql/my.cnf file. (etc/akondai/mysql-global.conf seems to have no effect on the mysql-server either!) My question: Where to put these (or similar) settings to apply them in a way that akonadi won't drop the connection with an external server (globally I guess?)?

    My company's corporate network requires me to set a network proxy to access the net, but when I am anywhere else, I don't need it. The proxy settings in Ubuntu (System - Preferences - Proxy server) allowed me to create "locations" that I can manually select. Then I have a "default" location (with no proxy) and a "work" location (with my company's proxy in it). Is there a way to make Ubuntu automatically select the "work" location based on the connection I'm using? I thought I could use the IP subnet (very specific) to detect where I am, but I have no idea how to set it up... Edit: I really need to have the proxy settings set at the system level. All my network connections (IMAP, SMTP, chat, etc) need to go through the proxy. Not only the web browser.

    I wanted to upgrade from 11.10 to 12.04 with the built-in upgrade-feature. but during the upgrade my pc stopped working. When I restarted my PC Ubuntu starts OK, but with many errors (many apps don't work and some graphic-errors). I try to upgrade again to 12.04, but I can't, because my Ubuntu identifies itself as 12.04. I tried to upgrade with the cd-setup but this also doesn't work. What should I do, if I don't want to reinstall the whole system?

    I'm new to ubuntu. I downloaded the newest version on a usb stick then I booted my PC with the usb. upon trying out ubuntu I tried installing additional packages/applications, which worked fine. BUT when I then after tried using my ubuntu usb, the new installed apps were not there! if I get that right, ubuntu would only install new packages to the actual PC I'm using it on. not within ubuntu itself!? is there a way that I can install new applications to my ubuntu usb and it should stay within ubuntu so I can use it for other pc's which don't have an internet connection necessary to update/install packages ? thanks so much

    I upgraded my laptop from ubuntu 13.04 to 13.10. Its working like a charm. But I doubt if software-center, file manager, vlc, etc upgraded. Still I am not getting the new versions of softwares in software-center. I am not able to see any new features in file managers as was noted on many blogs. VLC still showing the old version 2.0.8. Its being said that its upgraded to VLC 2.1 or just a dist-upgrade would do the job. But it didn't. Also I need to know the default applications (with version) provided by ubuntu 13.10 Kindly help.

  • "Access denied" to C:\Documents and Settings after removing malware?

    My Windows 7 PC became infected with the so-called "Malware Protection designed to protect" trojan while I was at work the other day. I managed to kill the process so that the malware is no longer running. The removal instructions specify to delete the following file: c:\documents and settings\all users\application data\defender.exe However, when I click to c:\documents and settings, it says "Access denied". Prior to this malware infection, I've never had any trouble accessing "Documents and Settings" or "Application Data." I read that in Windows 7, c:\documents and settings is a psudonym for c:\users, but I still cannot find the file defender.exe. Suggestions?
