• Zotero error in libreoffice

  I installed Zotero standalone in 12.10 64bit. Some problems which I managed to fix. The one that remains is an error saying "openoffice.org could not communicate with Zotero. make sure zotero standalone or Firefox are open and set to an online state and try again". That's when I click any button in the Zotero toolbar in libreoffice. Firefox doesn't open with a the plugin installed and a working internet connection. The Zotero troubleshooting which mentions this error was of no help to me. I find reports about this bug going back as far as 2009 but I haven't found anything of help.

• Over-scan Issues when using HDTV through VGA

  Right now all we can do is set the TV to 1280x768 instead of its native resolution of 1360x768. Setting it to its native resolution gives you a screen with a large portion of the left side of the screen cut off. We've tried everything with the TV so now we're turning to the innards of Ubuntu in hopes of fixing this. The computer is using an NVIDIA GeForce GT240. • When do you change your major/minor/patch version number?

  Do you change your major/minor/patch version numbers right before you release or right after? Example: You just released 1.0.0 to the world (huzzah!). But wait, don't celebrate too much. 1.1.0 is coming out in six weeks! So you fix a bug and do a new build. What's that build called? 1.1.0.0 or 1.0.0.xxxy (where xxxy is the build number of 1.0.0 incremented)? Keep in mind you may have 100 features and bugs to go into 1.1.0. So it might be good to call it 1.0.0.xxxy, because you're nowhere close to 1.1.0. But on the other hand, another dev may be working on 2.0.0, in which case your build might be better named 1.1.0.0 and his 2.0.0.0 instead of 1.0.0.xxxy and 1.0.0.xxxz, respectively.

• Multi Column Block Too Narrow in Chrome

  My Web site displays song lyrics in a multi-column format, using CSS3. Both Firefox & MSIE 10+ display the multi-column text perfectly, but Chrome does not. This sample page shows the problem: http://www.hymntime.com/tch/test/html5/html5-multicolumn-test.htm The page uses a media selector, so your Chrome window must be at least 1280 pixels wide to see the effect. In fact, if you make the Chrome window less than 1280 pixels, you'll see the lyrics block change to a single column, of the same overall width. In other words, when Chrome shifts to 1-column to 2-column mode (due to the wider browser window), the lyrics block remains the same width, causing text to be squeezed together. Has anyone else seen this behavior, or know a solution? Is this a Chrome bug, or I am I doing something wrong? I posted this question on a Chrome forum a while back, but got no reply.

• Phone complains that identical GLSL struct definition differs in vert/frag programs

  When I provide the following struct definition in linked frag and vert shaders, my phone (Samsung Vibrant / Android 2.2) complains that the definition differs. struct Light { mediump vec3 _position; lowp vec4 _ambient; lowp vec4 _diffuse; lowp vec4 _specular; bool _isDirectional; mediump vec3 _attenuation; // constant, linear, and quadratic components }; uniform Light u_light; I know the struct is identical because its included from another file. These shaders work on a linux implementation and on my Android 3.0 tablet. Both shaders declare "precision mediump float;" The exact error is: Uniform variable u_light type/precision does not match in vertex and fragment shader Am I doing anything wrong here, or is my phone's implementation broken? Any advice (other than file a bug report?)

• URL parameter names being changed by user agents

  In reviewing one of our site's web logs I'm seeing instances where we are returning a 404 to requests because we're expecting an id parameter to be sent, but instead we're seeing a di parameter. The resource in question is an image but which image file actually gets served is dependent on the id parameter. The expected url is something like http://images.mysite.com/photo.gif?id=123&width=200&height=300 What I'm seeing in the logs is requests for http://images.mysite.com/photo.gif?di=123&width=200&height=300 The only case where we are seeing this on the id parameter. It seems unlikely that this is due to a server side or JavaScript bug since it seems to be only effecting a small percentage of our traffic. We are seeing this across a wide variety of user agents (both mobile and desktop) and IPs. Has anyone else seen this? Is there a browser plugin or other software you're aware of that could be causing this, and if so is there a good way to work around the issue?

• Ubuntu 12.10 and Gnome-Shell : can't see nor launch apps except with Alt + F2

  I've installed Ubuntu 12.10 and Gnome-Shell 3.6. Everything worked fine till the moment I've began to customize the main menu (apps wich appears in Dash and so on). I don't know wether I've done something wrong or if there is a bug : suddenly, the Dash became empty. My favourite docks too, except the "Show apps" button. When I activate it, there is only an empty dash, no apps showed. The only way I can access an app is using the "Alt+F2" shortcut. I've tried to restart gnome-shell (Alt-F2 / r) but nothing has changed... A logout and a reboot have not changed ... Do you know how to repair the gnome-shell ? Thanks for your help...

  Has anybody ever come across this: System.out.println("value of: " + Float.valueOf("3.0f")); // ok, prints 3.0 System.out.println(new BigDecimal("3.0f").floatValue()); // NumberFormatException I would argue that the lack of consistency here is a bug, where BigDecimal(String) doesn't follow the same spec as Float.valueOf() (I checked the JDK doc). I'm using a library that forces me to go through BigDecimal, but it can happen that I have to send "3.0f" there. Is there a known workaround (BigDecimal is inaccessible in a library).

• Webmatrix The Site has Stopped Fix

  I just got started with AzureWebSites by creating a website by choosing the Wordpress template. Next I tried to install WebMatrix so that I could run the website locally. Every time I tried to run my website from WebMatrix I hit the message “The following site has stopped ‘xxx’” Step 00 – Analysis It took a bit of time to figure out that WebMatrix makes use of IISExpress. But it was easy to figure out that IISExpress was not showing up in the system tray when I started WebMatrix. This was a good indication that IISExpress is having some trouble starting up. So, I opened CMD prompt and tried to run IISExpress.exe this resulted in the below error message So, I ran IISExpress.exe /trace:Error this gave more detailed reason for failure Step 1 – Fixing “The following site has stopped ‘xxx’” Further analysis revealed that the IIS Express config file had been corrupted. So, I navigated to C:\Users\<UserName>\Documents\IISExpress\config and deleted the files applicationhost.config, aspnet.config and redirection.config (please take a backup of these files before deleting them). Come back to CMD and run IISExpress /trace:Error IIS Express successfully started and parked itself in the system tray icon. I opened up WebMatrix and clicked Run, this time the default site successfully loaded up in the browser without any failures. Step 2 – Download WordPress Azure WebSite using WebMatrix Because the config files ‘applicationhost.config’, ‘aspnet.config’ and ‘redirection.config’ were deleted I lost the settings of my Azure based WordPress site that I had downloaded to run from WebMatrix. This was simple to sort out… Open up WebMatrix and go to the Remote tab, click on Download Export the PublishSettings file from Azure Management Portal and upload it on the pop up you get when you had clicked Download in the previous step Now you should have your Azure WordPress website all set up & running from WebMatrix. • Why does my mic boost automatically go to 100 on every boot?

  When my computer turns on, it automatically sets the "mic boost" sound setting to 100. This causes a loud static sound in my speakers. I can manually go to alsamixer and turn the mic boost down manually, but I would prefer it if I didn't have to do this every time I turn the computer on. I've tried running sudo alsactl store after fixing the settings, and this does save them, but I have to run sudo alsactl restore to restore the settings. This means that I have to manually fix the sound every time I start the computer anyway, so it isn't really a fix. I tried putting sudo alsactl restore in my startup programs, but that didn't seem to fix anything. I'm running Ubuntu 12.04, but I started having this problem before upgrading from 11.10. I'm using a Sony Vaio laptop. I'm not really sure what made it start; it seemed like I just started having the problem randomly one day. Any help would be appreciated! • How do I install on an Acer Aspire M3970?

  I cannot install Ubuntu 11.04 or 11.10 32 or 64 bit from CD or USB Drive on my machine. I tried to unplug all devices connected to USB, no changes the same thing: [ 15.383691] sd 7:0:0:3: [sdg] Attached SCSI removeable disk. And then the installation or Live image booting does nothing more... Its quite annoying that Ubuntu run on every of my Machines but not on my new PC :( What can I do to get that running? Edit: Fascinating thing I found out, is that the 10.04 LTS seems to work in every way. Why does 11.04 or 11.10 does not... Maybe theres a Bug in the installer ?

• Dash search does not show applications

  Since the upgrade (actually a fresh install) to 13.10, many times, when I open Dash and search for an application I only get results for files and folders. Sometimes I get some applications but not others. I haven't found a pattern to replicate the issue 100%. If I open the application lens and search again, it works as it should. So many times, to launch an application, I have to use the super + a key combination to open the application scope instead of the simply the super key. It is annoying. Did anyone have the same issue? I searched for bugs on launchpad but didn't find any. I didn't open a bug report yet because it is not clear how to reproduce the problem faithfully. Even more importantly, does anyone have a solution to this issue?

• No desktop after installation of nvidia drivers

  I have a problem very similar to this guy: Desktop does not show when I installed nvidia drivers!. I have the same problem with the desktop not being present when I install choose the nvidia drivers from the software sources dialog. I've trie the answer mark as the solution, but this doesn't help me. Still get the same result / bug. I've also tried just to reconfigure it, like this guy says: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=12303179&postcount=4, but that didn't help me either. Then someone suggested that I should try Bumblebee. I followed the installation (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bumblebee#Installation) and after the reboot the resolution was still crappy, but this time the desktop did show up, but with bad graphics and I couldn't use optirun and it turned out that bumblebee couldn't start. I hope someone might know whats wrong or what I'm doing wrong. I have a Lenovo W520 with a nvidia Quadro FX 880M and I'm running ubuntu 12.10

It worked fine under 11.10 and did so for two weeks on 12.04. But since yesterday, I am unable to connect to my wireless network at home. First I have to connect via Cisco VPN using my university account. This is quite annoying and I'm unable to download apps via the software center when using the Cisco VPN client. I really don't know what happened, because it worked fine for two weeks and I did not change a thing.

• Double launchers and mouse captured between screens in Twinview configuration

  Just upgraded to 12.04 and noticed an extremely annoying issue. While using twinview, there now appears to be a launcher on each screen. Moving the mouse between monitors and over the launcher "captures" the mouse for half a second or so, creating the perception of lag. According to some bug reports I've read it appears that a launcher on every screen is a new "feature". Is there any way I can get rid of the 2nd launcher? It's driving my crazy.

  Sytmptom:   You have a list or document library page (allitems.aspx) and you are trying to add a Web part.  You get an error message: Unable to add selected Web part(s).  (name of Web part): The file is not checked out.  You must first check out this document before making changes. Publishing features are not turned on and it is not a page that lives in a library accessible by the GUI. Solution:  Open the site in SharePoint Designer and check out the page. Then, check in the page after modifications are done.  It seems like this is just a bug.

• CS4326/7 sound chipset on Thinkpad 600E

  OK, I know this has been a problem for a while, and I know by now this really old Pentium II laptop is really really really obsolete. However, I have installed Lubuntu 10.10 on this laptop and things seem to work fine except the sound. Now I've read and gone through a bunch of tutorials and guides to working around this, none of which have worked. I have gone through this Ubuntu bug report and that doesn't work either. The problem I think is that the latest workaround is (understandably) about two Ubuntu versions behind. Now I'm not sure what has changed since then to make that workaround not work, but I would appreciate any help. Thanks

Also I've fixed switchable graphics bug, using this guide (STEP 2). I've tried to add 'LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME=xvba LIBVA_DRIVERS_PATH=/usr/lib/va/drivers' to /etc/environment and rebooted system, but the result was the same. PLEASE HELP! :) Thanks! :]

• Forked a project, where do my version numbers start?

  I have forked a project and have changed lots of it. This fork isn't just a small feature change here and a buried bug fix there, its a pretty substantial change. Only most of the core code is shared. I forked this project at v2.5.0. For a while I've started versioning my fork at v3.0 . However I'm not sure if this is the right way, mainly because when that project hits v3.0, things get confusing. But I don't want to start over at v1.0 or v0.1 because that implies infancy, instability, and non-refindness of a project. This isn't true, as most of the core code is very refined and stable. I'm really lost on what to do, so I ask here: Whats the standard way to deal with this kind of situation? Do most forks start over again, bump up version numbers, or do something else that I'm not aware of.

  It was a long time coming and I hope worth the wait.  If you have SQL Server 2008 R2 installed on the same box as ClearTrace and you download the latest ClearTrace build (36) you’ll be able to read SQL Server 2008 R2 traces.  I also fixed a bug handling very, very large SQL statements.  I encountered an INSERT statement that was 12MB in size.  It was storing XML in a database.  ClearTrace uses regular expressions to clean up the SQL it finds.  Running two dozen regular expressions over this 12MB string caused the application to crash.  In this build I’m just skipping any statement over 1MB.  I’ll do something a little nicer in the next build. • What is proper way to get specific version of package

  I am using Ubuntu 14.04 LTS I need to use curl package. But it comes in version 7.35.0 with known SSL bug (already fixed in next version) I either need lower version <= 7.33.0 or higher >= 7.36.0 to make it works, but how can I do it? Do I need to manually install curl? I checked synaptics, "Force Version" feature is greyed out. I also checked apt-cache showpkg curl, there is no other version available. I also tried to add "proposed" repositories, no new curl version either. What should I do? I am thinking about getting .deb package from previous ubuntu release...

• What is "egoless programming"?

  I first heard this term about fifteen years ago. My understanding is similar to that described in the Wikipedia article and a TechRepublic article: you work with your colleagues in a "friendly, collegiate way in which personal feelings are put aside". It includes things like doing peer reviews with mutual respect and a desire to learn, and not feeling like you "own" code, so if somebody has a suggestion or says there's a bug or needs to change it, you don't get defensive about it. I've also thought it was largely about having an attitude that makes for good relations with other programmers with the goal of improving the code. So I haven't seen it as being incompatible with taking pride in the quality of your work or feeling regret if something you did caused your customer a problem. However, an answer to a recent question makes me think some other programmers have different understandings about "egoless programming". So what is the correct definition? And what are its implications?

• Oh Unity Launcher scrambled with color dots after log on or restart

  The left hand side Unity launch bar is color scrambled after reboot, or log on. When touching it with the mouse arrow, it comes back to normal. I installed gnome shell color before this started happening. I will uninstall gnome shell color & see if this problem goes away. Any one ever see this happen. I run a Nvidia 550ti ge-force graphic card. I have the latest 295.33 driver from Nvidia installed and it does show activated in my restricted driver window. Oh yeah, before you inform me, I can tell you that yes, I do see the instructions to report bugs to the correct source. But I really don't know if this is a bug or not. Could be something else.

• Theme sometimes fails to load on some UI elements

  I have no idea if this error as been seen before or not, I have looked around and found people saying they have errors that sound the same but none of the fixes work, my issue is that sometimes the theme does not load some parts of the UI, (the buttons and icons in this case) but the rest is just fine (window bars e.t.c) so I have no idea what the issue is, it works just fine for the most part but sometimes has this bug, if you restart the system it tends to fix it for some time so its hard to see how it could be a graphic card error, however I am very new to linux systems so I may be missing someting very fundamental here.
