• Will a Wubi install of Ubuntu effect my Windows installation in anyway? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: What are the benefits of a disk install vs. Wubi? And can I migrate my settings easily? Having never tried a Linux OS before, I want to dabble and take a look at one. Ubuntu seems like a good distro to go with (due to how popular it is) and I want to use Wubi to try it out. I just wanted to know if anything I do while trying out Ubuntu will effect my Windows Installation or the files pertaining to it in anyway? If so, is it potentially Windows breaking?

• Can I import an existing member data used in old ASP to a new ASP.NET membership database? [closed]

  I have an old website that I designed and still maintain using old ASP that has a membership database (MS-SQL) that I built from scratch. It is a very simple database that has all the user information in one table (including login info and personal info) and then details and other odds and ends in other tables. It is WAY past time to upgrade this to .NET, especially since I need to add a Paypal payment system into it as soon as I can. I've designed several other sites with membership in .NET, but they have all been from scratch. Is there an easy way to transition from the old ASP site to a new .NET membership database without losing the data? There are hundreds of users with thousands of records relating to those users that I'd rather not lose, if possible. Any ideas on a relatively painless way to do this?

As an Ask Ubuntu user I can see that most of the users (including myself) are asking questions about entertainment related problems. Is that all? No commercial use with it? Do people make fun of Ubuntu or just pretending to be Ubuntu users and use Windows secretly? Please don't hate me or make fun of me, I know lots of people trying to make Ubuntu even better, and I know it's better than Windows (if Adobe software just work on Ubuntu, I won't see Windows logo on my monitor anymore). • Are there any useless language features in the C or C++ language? [closed]

  As a beginner I often found myself saying "This is so useless. How can this ever help me?" only to find out later on that it is essential and I was a fool. The moral, however, tends to be that the C or the C++ language are perfect and they contain nothing of no-use to programmers. I'm asking this question for 2 reasons: out of pure curiosity and so that I may know what not to learn. In a nutshell - are there any useless language features in the C or the C++ language, which good programmers almost never use? It would also be of great help if you would mention weather they are a bad practice when used or just purely useless.

  Are there studies on what effects have programming languages on the brain or for that matter any other artificial languages in general, like mathematics ? Speaking from my personal experience I feel very different every time I speak Italian, I feel like a virtuoso on a quest but at the other end when I coded in machine code in debug.exe I felt like the main charcter inp(Movie). Why do I bring this up because I am suspecting that languages affect your mind and popular legends back this up too often: are full of mathematicians that crossed the Rubicon.

• How to handle interruptions in developer work without losing concentration? [closed]

  I work as a developer for some years now. Mainly the issue why it's antisocial work is because you need to spend much time programming. I've been always the kind of developer who likes to cut off from any sources of distraction and spend several hours on project because in this way i (as i hope) do it faster. There are also other kinds of developers, more social that can chat, read, watch movies while development and they are ok with this and don't hesitate to be interrupted in their work in any time and come back to the project without any problem. For me any distraction is source of frustration because i need to spend substantial time to load my mind with all info about the project and to concentrate back on the tasks. I always thought it's better to do this that way because project is completed faster. But it makes some things difficult: it's hard to chat with someone who needs to have some important info: because you are a bit frustrated when you know you loose your Zen. And sometimes its more important to chat with someone than to loose Zen. Well.. mostly in any other kind of work the ability to be "multitask" is very important. But as a developer and as a person it's also very important to stay social. And i see now that the problem of concentration makes it difficult to make the right chose: the cost of maintaining concentration is just sometimes so damn high! So is it only me that i have so little concentration skills so any interruption is for me a big deal? Maybe it's just i have so bad memory so that i dont remember all issues of a project so long? Or maybe i develop the project in a fashion that requires me to store so much info on my mind only to be able to start working with code? Or should i just accept that being more social will make me finish project slower and in the fashion that i personally consider non 100% productive? And it's just normal thing and i should just accept it and start to live like any other person who has many works and don't assume that programming is in any case other than any other work and i just do fuzz about the whole concentration thing? This is question for mid-pro developers. I think you was having the same dillema in your life. I would be glad if you could help me take the right road here because it's just driving me and i suppose people i work with crazy for years.

• Some websites are not opening. What should I do? [closed]

  Some websites are not opening in my system. I am using Ubuntu 11.04. Earlier, when I was using Ubuntu 10.01, there was no such issue. I have tried Firefox as well as Chromium and I am sure the issue is not with the browser. same websites are opening perfectly with Windows. Google, Twitter and Ubuntu related websites are running perfect. Other websites like www.downrightnow.com, easy-mantra.com are not opening. Installed Wubi on windows7 (32 bit). Ubuntu 12.10 is 64 bit. I am interested in some practical suggestions/wishes for the language. • What technology should I concentrate on for mobile development? [closed]

  Firstly, I have many years experience with C# & .NET and some with Java. But, rather than committing to Java and developing native applications for Andriod I have been researching cross-platform deployment technologies. Currently, the most powerful cross-platform technology seems to be Flash, using Adobe AIR to package software as native applications. But given Adobe's announcement that it will discontinue support for the Flash Player on mobile devices it seems foolish (at this late stage) to invest in Flash and ActionScript as a developer. There has been speculation that Microsoft are also planning their exit strategy for Silverlight in favour of HTML5. So, my questions are; What is the most appropriate technology to invest in and learn in order to build cross-platform mobile applications / games while future proofing my skills as a developer? Is HTML5 mature enough to fill the 'Flash void' and be used to start building cross-platform, rich, interactive, networked mobile applications / games now? N.B.   I've been doing PHP freelance development for the last 4-5 years and I'm starting to max out my hourly rate. So in 2010 I decided to transition to a new language. I played with Python and Ruby, but ended up settling on iOS, for three reasons: I'm enjoying the challenge of working on a completely different type of development, instead of another flavor of web development The demand seems higher right now than for Ruby or Python I see iOS developers charging $150 - 250 / hr Whether these reasons are right or wrong, I've been learning iOS for the last year and I'm starting to get more work in that field. I feel confident that in six months (barring any major shifts in the ecosystem), I can be billing iOS work at $150 / hr or more. However, I'm feeling that I should have done this earlier, that I've missed the boat, and that iOS development is going to dry up or get much more commoditized. Whether this is true or not isn't really my question (though feel free to comment). What I want to know is: what should I start learning right now so that I can be ahead of the curve in a couple years when the demand is far outstripping supply? What technologies or skillsets are going to be so heavily in demand in 2-3 years that you'll be able to charge $250 / hr or more and stay busy? These don't have to be new technologies either...the answer could be iOS or COBOL or whatever.

• Is it normal to think about a design problem for days with no code written? [closed]

Then I scratch it out and start again, then when I think I have the correct solution for the problem I begin writing the code. Is it normal to think for days without writing any code? Is this a sign that I am approaching the problem entirely wrong? It makes me nervous to not getting any tangible code written in my IDE.

  Possible Duplicate: Is it better to specialize in a single field I like, or expand into other fields to broaden my horizons? My buddy and I who have been programming for 13 years or so were talking this morning and a question that came up was is it better to know a little of a lot (i.e. web, desktop, VB.Net, C#, jQuery, PHP, Java etc.) or is it better to know a lot of a little (meaning expert in something). The context of this question is what makes someone a senior programmer? Is it someone that has been around the block a few times and has been in many different situations or one that is locked in to a specific technology that is super knowledgeable in that one technology? I see pro's and con's of both scenarios.. Just wondering what others thought.

• Menu bars are a basic light gray after installing graphics card driver. [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Desktop forgets theme? Hi, I've just installed Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit. It came up saying I could install 2 proprietary drivers, one for my WiFi adapter (which works perfectly) and one for my graphics card - a Sapphire AIT Radeon HD 5770 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card. The driver is called ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver. Before installing this driver I was unable to have Extra Visual Effects in Appearances. However after installing (and restarting) the menu bars are now in a basic light gray mode, rather than the sleek Ubuntu black. - Although Extra Visual Effects does now work. I've tried rebooting, and I've had a look around in ATI "Catalyst Control Center" but nothing has worked so far. Does anybody know what this windows mode is, how to change it back to normal and why it's doing it in the first place? Below is a screenshot of my computer: (This is also the first time I've installed Ubuntu on my computer, and am keen for it to work.)

• Which programming language should i choose? (much more info inside) [closed]

  I am not completely sure if this is the right place to put this question, but since it's the programming thread I guessed that there's many experienced programmers here. :) Ok, hello! My name is Andreas and I am a 16 years old guy from Norway. For some time now I've wanted to learn a programming language. Six months ago I started learning C++, but quit withing a week due to lack of motivation. The same thing happend only 2 months ago when I tried to learn Lua. I wanted to program mods to the game Garry's mod, and was really motivated. Then I stopped playing the game, and the programming stopped with it. Today though I am ready again. The only difference is that I am not completely sure what I want to do with the language. I only want to create something, and I miss the progress of failing and enduring hard work until I finally solve the problem I've worked on for hours. What I am trying to say is; Is there any program out there that allows me, a complete noob (I didn't learn that much in a week, so I like to call myself a beginner), to create apps, mods or something similar but at the same time being qualified as a first time language? I was thinking of Java, because Android, Minecraft and many other applications and games use it. But I've heard that it is going to be replaced by a program called HTML 5 (whatever that is), is this true? I certainly don't want to spend many hours of my life on something that is useless in a year or two. Hopefully I didn't make this too complicated. I know that it is hard to recommend something when I don't have a goal, but I really don't know what to say. • What to learn to make a photo gallery site like this? [closed]

  I started a Wordpress site for my blog but now I want to start another domain for sharing my photos. I used to use Flickr but it requires you to sign up for Flickr Pro if you want to upload over a certain amount of photos. Since I don't want to pay for that, I'm looking to create a photo gallery site like this: http://10mmgalore.com/ or http://www.shuttermaki.com/ But how do you go about with that? Would I be able to install Wordpress and find a theme like that? And/Or are there any Wordpress plugins that I can install to make it like look like that? Or do I need different tools and platforms asides from Wordpress? So can someone list the features, tools and information that I need to make a photo gallery site? The main functions that I want for my site is to have a picture in the middle and when the user clicks on the photo, it goes to the next photo; or there are left and right arrows that users can click to the next photo. I just want to create an album website for my 365 days project (a photo a day). It doesn't have to be as fancy as the sites mentioned above. Thank you!
