  • Computer randomly shuts itself off

    I have not been able to determine a pattern for why this happens, despite my best efforts. I've attempted to run it on full power with Prime95 and this doesn't trigger a restart. Generally the restarts occur while I'm playing games, watching videos, or even just having multiple tabs open in a browser. However, I often play processor intense games for hours without any restarts occurring, and sometimes they'll happen 3-4 times in an hour during less intense activity, so I don't think that is the problem. I imagine it has something to do with overheating or power consumption so I've been monitoring CPU temperature and cleaning with compressed air, but the problem keeps happening. I don't know how to track power consumption, and assume that this is the problem. Whenever this occurs, the sound gets stuck in a short loop of whatever was playing at the time, though restarts also occur when nothing is playing. I built the computer myself with a friend's guidance but it's very possible I did something wrong. Right now I'm looking into ensuring that I have the latest drivers for all components.   • Standing and sitting while using a computer at work

    I would like to be able to comfortably switch between sitting and standing while at work (I'm a software developer, so I spend most of my day in front of a computer). For the past couple of months I have been using a large elevated stand that sits on my desk (designed expressly for this purpose) containing my keyboard and mouse, and my monitors have been raised as high as possible and aimed upwards. So I can stand all day and I'm pretty comfortable (my right wrist may be at too much of an angle when it's on my mouse, but that's a separate issue). The only problem is that sometimes I want to be able to sit. I can easily place my keyboard and mouse back down under the elevated stand, but I have to look up pretty steeply and that is uncomfortable and makes it difficult to see the screens since they are tilted upwards. My monitor mounts are difficult to adjust quickly/easily, so I can't just re-aim them. I would of course love one of those hydraulic standing/sitting desks (cost isn't the problem). But I'm in a row of "trader-style" desks where it's basically a very long surface with people sitting at 6-foot intervals. What type of equipment do you recommend? I suppose the best thing would be some sort of monitor stand (it must be able to hold 2-3 LCDs) that can easily be lowered and raised. But any other suggestions are also welcome.

  • Finding bluetooth link key in Win7, to double pair a device on dualboot computer

    How can I dig up the bluetooth link key for a paired device in Win7? Is this something that is dependent on the bluetooth stack I'm using (Toshiba), or is there a generic place to store these in Win7? Note: I'm not talking about the six-digit code usually typed by the user during pairing - that is worthless since it's discarded after pairing process. What I mean is the 128-bit link key that the devices exchange during pairing, and use thereafter to encrypt all their bluetooth traffic. Background: I dualboot Win7 / Ubuntu on my laptop, and I would like to have my phone paired to both OS's. Since the dualbooting computer has only one bluetooth adapter and thus only one bluetooth address, I cannot do two pairings to the phone, since on the second pairing (windows) the phone just replaces the previous pairing (linux) to the same bluetooth address. A thread on Ubuntu forums pointed me to what I have to do - pair first on linux, then on windows, and then replace the link key on linux side with the one windows negotiated. I can find the linux side pairing key from /var/lib/bluetooth/[BD_ADDR]/linkkeys - no problems there. However, on windows side I can't find the key. According to the forum post, on windows side the key should be in SYSTEM\ControlSet002\services\BTHPORT\Parameters\Keys\[BD_ADDR] but while that registry key does exist, it has no subkeys. (And a similar registry path in ControlSet001 didn't have any subkeys either.) One thing I've been instructed to do is to capture all events during pairing with Sysinternals Process Monitor. I did this, but I haven't been able to find any useful information from the captured events, not even by exporting the data to a huge XML and grepping that with the BD_ADDRs (with or without colons).   • Running computer from separate room

    I want my computer to be in the basement, but to use it on the first floor. Which cables should I run through the floor? Can some be wireless or other methods? Here are some of the options I've thought of: Basic: Run DVI, usb (mouse), usb (keyboard), and audio cable (4 cables) USB Hub option: Run DVI, and 1 usb, then using a usb hub split it into mouse, keyboard, maybe even audio (2-3 cables) HDMI Option: If I get a new video card and monitor that supports HDMI, would I be able to run both audio and video through it? Would the monitor have to have an audio out? Also there is a lot of extra bandwidth in the HDMI cables, could I send two monitors on 1 cable or would I have to use 2 cables? How about sending mouse/keyboard through the HDMI cable? I see a lot of monitors with USB hubs built in, but I assume I'd still have to wire HDMI + 1 USB cable to use the USB hubs? X Terminal Machine/Thin Client: I don't really know much about this option. Not sure if it would allow me to run graphics acceleration and watch movies, does anyone know more details about what this would allow me to do? Other options: Any other ways to do this? Can any of this be wireless?

    We've a 64bit Windows Server 2008 running Remote Desktop. The application lsm.exe (the local session manager) appears to be leaking memory. Although the memory usage is quite low when the server is rebooted, this continues to climb until people can no longer log in. The server has no audio card and does not have any AV software installed. The server is fully service packed. (Service pack 2) What could be causing this, and how would I fix it?

    Hello, We have English keyboards. I never saw any other keyboard in my life. I've been wondering for a long time. How do people in Korea, China, Russia, Muslim countries and some European countries where English is less known. Do they have keyboards in their native language? I mean are the keyboard directly manufactured in their native language. Or do they use some kind of keyboard mapping softwares to acheive the task. I've been searching in Google images to have a glance at their computers but didn't find any real key pads for computers/smartphones. If they have some non-English keyboard. Then how would they type web URLs? URLs possible in other languages also? If they have to type English URLs then it also means that they need to know English. I've seen in some movies that they have all their softwares, windows have text in their native language. How do they have some different language? I feel lost & confused. If you have any screenshots / pics of such non-english computer please post. I want to see one.

  • Access Windows from Mac via Remote Dekstop Connection using hostname

    I'm using Snow Leopard with Remote Desktop Connection attempting to access a Windows XP machine on a home network. If I specify the Windows PC's hostname it won't connect. Only by specifying the IP address does it connect. It's the same issue when trying to ping the Windows machine - IP address works, hostname doesn't. Both machines are on the same subnet connecting with a wireless router. Is there way to get OSX to resolve the Windows PC by its hostname?

  • Setting up a virtual ftp directory that points to another computer

    I have II5 sitting on an old Windows 2000 Professional box. It has an FTP site there that allows me to access files. It works great, no problem at all. However, now I need to setup a virtual directory that points to a share on another computer on the network (running Windows XP Tablet Edition). The share requires a user name and password. The network is a simple workgroup (i don't have any domains or any of that). What is the correct procedure for that? I've tried setting a share via UNC and typing in the UserID/Password when asked. But when I finished, the virtual machine showed up as an error in the IIS Manager and couldn't access it. I mapped the share onto a drive and then tried to setup a virtual directory with this drive. Same result. Is there something simple I am missing? Would upgrading any part of the picture help at all?

It's a pretty simple algorithm to scale the image so that one of the dimensions (usually height) fits on the screen.     I was just going through some all-in-one desktop PCs (Dell Studio One, HP Touch Smart, Lenovo IdeaCenter, etc.) and their specs really look good (4 GB RAM, 2.x GHz Core 2 Duo, etc.) Are there any disadvantages of such PCs as a developer machine? I mostly do Java (Eclipse + MySQL + Tomcat / JBoss) or .NET (Visual Studio + MsSQL) development. Edit: One common question I could see is harddrive size and that's around 320 GB 7200 RPM.

    Ok I have searched google for two days trying to get this to work. Here are the steps I have taken so far: Clean install of Ubuntu 10.10 Install mysql 5.1 as well as admin Comment out the bind address in the config file Create a new database Create a new user that is username@% to allow remote connections Grant all access to this user to the new database EXCEPT the grant option Login on the server is ok using this new user and database on the localhost Login on the server is ok using this new user and database on the server internal network ip Login from a remote computer is ok using this new user and database using the internal network ip Login is not working when logging in with this username and database using the external ip address from the server or the remote computer. I have port forwarding enabled for this port and it is viewable from outside as confirmed by canyouseeme.org I have nmap'd using the following command on the internal ip and get the below result: nmap -PN -p 3306 192.168.1.73 Starting Nmap 5.21 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2011-02-19 13:41 PST Nmap scan report for computername-System-Name (192.168.1.73) Host is up (0.00064s latency). I have tried everything under the moon and still can not connect from a remote external ip address.   • Computer randomly reboots during "intensive activity".

    My friend has been playing games on his new build for some time now. However, lately, his computer will randomly reboot out of nowhere, so far only happening in game, and presumably only to happen in game as it happens nowhere else. This can happen in game during play or even in the options. Note, it isn't a crash or blue screen. It's just a normal reboot. This started today, I believe, and has only occured in two games: Dead Space and Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl. He has played a handful of games before these, for about a week or so, without this problem. We theorized on two possibilities: Maybe something is overheating? Maybe the power supply is inadequate? These two were quickly dismissed, as all his components were operating at normal temperatures when he got back to his desktop from the reboot, and we all know these parts don't exactly cool down quickly, especially if they get hot enough to trigger a reboot. Besides, I know at-least my motherboard reports processor overheating at start-up, and requests I press f1 to continue into boot. The PSU one was dismissed too. He has an 850w power supply on a rig that was estimated to take only 720 some watts, that's with some overcompensating to be safe. He opened up his case to make sure nothing was seated wrong or in the way. All was fine, but he did notice a sticker on his video card. It had a giant barcode on it and some numbers. Now, I'm used to seeing these stickers, they're the warranty stickers, right, and removal voids the warranty? Yeah, well, we find it odd because this sticker is slapped right over the circuits of the video card, not on a block or anything. Is this normal? Should he remove it? Right now, I am concerned with the memory. Could that be at fault? Here are his specs: Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-Bit Intel i7 950 EVGA GeForce 570 GTX 4 GB DDR3 PC10666 dual-channel Corsair RAM Corsair 850w PSU Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R Western Digital 1 TB WD1001FALS

  • Corrupted Laptop - Transfer Data Without My Computer (explorer.exe) Using Command Line

    I have a laptop (Toshiba Satellite) that is pretty messed up. The person this belongs too already replaced it with a new machine. My job is to transfer all her data from this machine to disk so that I can transfer it to her. She doesn't want to lose any data (understandably so). Any operation I attempted (i.e., double clicking on any folder icon, like My Documents, My Computer, etc) resulted din a complete crash. The only good news is that I can actually start and navigate around using the command line. Also, I can access the internet. I have a network, so if I can map the drives I can get this thing figured out (hopefully). Also, I tried a USB drive but I couldn't figure out how to access it from the command line. Two questions (I need to use the command line for these): How would I go about accessing the USB drive and how can I map the shared drives on my network so that I may cd to that directory for use of the copy command?
