• "Computer Locked" dialog does not appear

  When I lock my computer, instead of seeing the "Computer Locked" dialog, I only see the "Unlock Computer" dialog with my user name populated and my password box has focus. I am not prompted to Ctrl+Alt+Del to first get to the "Unlock Computer" dialog. This concerns, as nearly all of my other Windows XP machines do display the "Computer Locked" dialog and force a Ctrl+Alt+Del sequence to get to the "Unlock Computer" dialog. I cannot find a setting, registry or otherwise, that addresses this. I am running Windows XP Pro (version 2002) SP3

• Time tracking similar to Paymo Plus on Debian

  PaymoPlus is free (closed source but no fees) PaymoPlus sits in my System Tray all day, and records every window/tab I open I would like to know if a similar app exists for Debian. Paymo for Windows/Mac has the additional sweet feature of being able to drag and drop working windows/tabs and the time spent into the tasks, but one can live without this. I would at least need to know which tasks got how much time in a 'sum total' calculation so I can enter that time into my Paymo reporting. Any ideas? Paymo does have a desktop widget for Linux but it is a dumb (non-sentient) manual time entry tool, not like Paymo Plus automatically recording everything being done.

• Best Practices in Preventing Locks in File sharing in Windows?

  We have a web development server, that has our source control on it. That we use via mapped drives to open/edit/save/create files on to it. But I have noticed a lot of weird glitches with either the file lock/sharing/etc For example, if i have a file open on my local pc, and try to check out that file via my source control on dev, it error's out. The source control I use is QCVS by Qumasoft. Or If I use cuteftp to download something to dev, via my local pc, it won't download unless I close that file. So my brain sniff's and figures this is either an issue with folder/network/sharing, or an issue of permissions. Has anyone else had similar issues, and what did they do to fix it permanently? • Outlook 2007 Script that sends new form email when a message is dragged and dropped into a folder

  Is it possible to write a script that will allow Outlook to automatically send out a new email to a distribution list when you drag and drop and previously opened email into a specified folder? The rules only let you apply them to received and sent messages. They do not allow you to apply it to anything that is dragged and dropped after being opened. It baffles me that Novell Groupwise had this functionality but Outlook 2007 does not. If someone can assist me in writing a script/macro to provided this functionality, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

• Ubuntu Volume overriding settings set in Alsamixer

  Problem: How do I "lock in" the volume I set through alsamixer? I'm running Ubuntu 9.10. I adjusted the bass/treble columns in alsamixer but changing the system volume resets them all back to 100% I did save the settings by running alsactl store but everything is reset once I touch Ubuntu's volume icon in the top menu bar. This is rather painful because the computer is hooked up to a 650watt system with a massive subwoofer. As much as I enjoy my music, there's no need to have the walls vibrate :) What can I do to prevent Ubuntu from overriding the settings?

• How does one go about fixing a pixelation issue?

  I've been having a lot of trouble with pixelation and also in-game display driver crashes. At first I thought the problem may have been my graphics card (Sapphire 5750) but I have RMA'd it three times and I'm still having trouble. So what I think it might be is my PSU, its 650Watt but its made by Azza so it was cheap and not made by a necessarily good company. Or maybe it could be the CPU (AMD Phenom Black Edition 3.4Ghz) It runs hot (60C) but it passes Everest's test. Someone told me it could be the memory (8GB DDR3) but I don't really see how RAM has anything to do with my problem. So what are some of you suggestions? • Is there any way to see the contents of a device via windows media player/sync?

  I've got a sansa clip mp3 player and an htc touch pro 2 phone that I put music/audio books etc. on. Putting stuff on there is easy peasy I open media player 11, go to the sync tab at the right and drag media to it. The problem is seeing what's already on there and removing anything I no-longer want on there - I have no way to see that aside from browsing via explorer. Both devices move media around to specifc folders so it's a bit annoying. Is there any way to do what I need in media player or is there any other good and free alternatives that will?

• Kill xserver from command line (init 3/5 does not work)

  I'm running Linux Mint 10, although I've had this same issue with other variants of Linux. I've been told/found while researching that if the X server hangs or otherwise errors, one can drop to a root prompt, usually at another tty, and execute init 3 (to drop to single user mode) and then init 5 to return to the default, graphical session. Needless to say, I've tried this before in multiple configurations on multiple machines to no avail. The only feedback I receive form executing those two commands is a listing of VMWare services (from a kernel module) that are stopped and then restarted. Note: If I run startx (either before or after init 3), then I am told that the xserver is still running and that I should remove /tmp/.X0-lock. Having tried that, it removes that error message, but claims that the xserver cannot be attached as another instance is running. How do I kill the xserver completely? Can I killall some process name?

• When I type certain characters, they come out as backquotes

  Very strange behavior. Some background: I bought a new lenovo G550 laptop, running Windows 7. I live in Israel. When I type certain keys, in any application, they are prefaced with the backquote (`). These characters are: Insert, Delete, Left Ctrl (the right-hand one is fine), - (the regular dash: the one on the keypad is fine), =, 5 (the regular one), 4 (the one on the numeric keypad, whether or not Num Lock is on), and PgDn (the regular one). When I press the Fn key with these I don't get the behavior. Does anyone know why this is happening, or how I can fix it?

• Permission issue when deleting folders

  I can't delete some folders and some actions are being denied because I do not have administrator access. But in my user account it says i am an administrator. I also just upgraded from Windows Vista 64-bit to Windows 7 64-bit, but I had this problem before upgrading, but now I am being denied more things. I also can't reorder the way files are sorted in folders. I can sort them through the default means, but I literally can't drag and drop them if I want to reorder them. I don't know if this is another problem or if it is related. Let me know if you need more information. Thanks!

• VMware player suspends on screensaver

  I have this problem with my VMWare player. When my host operating system either goes into screen saver or I lock the work station with Windows Key + L. VMWare player pauses or halts everything. So when i come back to the computer and there is a background task working inside the virtual machine it does not progress until i've actualy loged back on. Is there any way to stop this behaviour with VMWare player and keep it running in the background even when the screen saver or the work station is locked? Version of VMWare is: 3.0.0 build-203739

• How do I stop cropping in iMovie?

  I'm not certain if 'crop' is the right term. I'm new to iMovie so I may have some of the terminology wrong. When I import a movie, I allow it to resize to the recommended settings instead of full size. Then I drag it from the lower event pane into the project pane. In the 'preview' pane where the movie can be played, the top and bottom of the movie are cut off a little. It's like its converting it to widescreen by cutting off the top and bottom. After I publish the movie in mobile format (it won't allow any larger) it still has the top and bottom removed. How can I stop this? I even tried importing full (original) size and it still didn't help.

• How to resolve problematic vnc/xming clipboard interaction?

  I often have both a VNC client window and several X windows open (via Xming) at the same time on my Windows XP desktop. When this happens, the X windows, especially emacs and firefox, often lock up or behave erratically. I am pretty sure I have narrowed this down to contention over the clipboard. I wasn't really able to find any options controlling this behavior in either Xming or VNC. Is there a solution to this problem? Right now, I have to close VNC when I am actively using emacs...

• Why can't I defragment my SQL 2008 .mdf file?

  I am defragmenting a badly (95%) fragmented drive upon which large (35 gig) SQL Server 2008 .mdf files live. After defragmenting and viewing the exception report, I see that the production .mdf file that I'm most interested in could not be defragmented. I initially figured it was because MSSQL had an exclusive lock on the file, so I detached it and tried again. No luck - this particular .mdf file could not be defragmented. What am I missing? Most online references suggest that I should be able to file defrag an .mdf A note: yes, I'm talking about file defragmentation, not index defrag, which is already being done routinely, and which I'll re-run after this.   On a virtualized server running Ubuntu 10.04, df reports the following: # df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda1 7.4G 7.0G 0 100% / none 498M 160K 498M 1% /dev none 500M 0 500M 0% /dev/shm none 500M 92K 500M 1% /var/run none 500M 0 500M 0% /var/lock none 500M 0 500M 0% /lib/init/rw /dev/sda3 917G 305G 566G 36% /home This is puzzling me for two reasons: 1.) df says that /dev/sda1, mounted at /, has a 7.4 gigabyte capacity, of which only 7.0 gigabytes are in use, yet it reports / being 100 percent full; and 2.) I can create files on / so it clearly does have space left. Possibly relevant is that the directory /www is a symbolic link to /home/www, which is on a different partition (/dev/sda3, mounted at /home). Can anyone offer suggestions on what might be going on here? The server appears to be working without issue, but I want to make sure there's not a problem with the partition table, file systems or something else which might result in implosion (or explosion) later.

  I have an OpenVZ container on 1 host and I would like to clone it over to my server. both run SolusVM. I only have root access to my server and would like to host the container on my server now. Can I use rsync to clone the drive while the OS is running on both? Using a command like this: rsync -uazPx --exclude='/boot' --exclude='/proc' --exclude='/dev' --exclude='/lib' --exclude='/tmp' --exclude='/var/lock' / [email protected]:/ Is there any other areas I should probably not copy over?

  Hello, With the availability of compact USB memory sticks with much, MUCH higher storage capacities is there still any use-case for taking periodic, incremental backups on DVD/RWs? The DVD/RW has an additional annoyance that you cannot drag and drop files to it as easily as you can on a USB memory stick. So, if I have a 4.7GB DVD/RW, I must re-burn the whole image every time I backup new stuff... with possibly rearranged file/folder structure. Secondly, why in this day and age you cannot install a file-system (like ext3 or FAT32) on a DVD/RW... and likewise on CD/RW's as you can on a USB memory stick? Many thanks, /HS

• Windows XP freezes completely

  Lately my Win XP SP3 started to make problems. From time to time it freezes completely. Which means that the system does not react to mouse and keyboard. Keyboard led indicators also do not react to CAPS-, SCROLL-, NUM- LOCK keys. The problem is that I don't understand what causes this behavior and it seems to happen randomly. System event log also does not contain any clues. I'm thinking this could be some driver/hardware problem, but I don't know which. Are there any tools that would help me figure out the cause of this problem? Does anybody have any clue how can I fix this?

My idea is to have a branch for each server. /etc is not the only one directory to be tracked (I won't git init in '/etc' ) As far as I could see, it is possible to init a git for a distant directory. This is in relation to a previous question I had on locking portions of a Word Document located here: http://superuser.com/questions/143860/can-i-lock-or-make-uneditable-portions-of-a-word-document Using this solution, any editable area is highlighted. You can uncheck the Highlight editable area box within the Protect Document bar but if you save and reopen the area is highlighted again. The document is on a network drive. If another user were to open the document it would also be highlighted. Is there anyway to permanently turn this highlighting off so that when a user accesses the document from the network they do not see this highlighting? Using Word 2007.

• Forgot to unmount/eject external hard drive, lost moved files. Mac OS X

  So I was using my Mac with my external hard drive connected via USB. I moved about 10 GB of data to it (via drag and drop while holding down the Command key to move the files rather than to copy them). They moved to the drive all right, but as I was having some issues and the Finder crashed after the transfer, I was unable to eject the volume and later everything froze so I had to do a hard restart (hold the power button). When I remounted the volume (plugged the external hard drive back in) it no longer had any of the files which I moved onto it. As it was a lot of data, how can I recover these files?

• unexpected behaviour of Ctrl-a x and Ctrl-a X in screen?! regions, locking

  According to the screen manual (version 4.0.2.) C-a x C-a C-x (lockscreen) Lock this terminal. C-a X (remove) Kill the current region. But what actually happens when I use it (Screen version 4.00.03 (FAU) 23-Oct-06): C-a X locks the terminal and asks me for the password. When I enter the correct passwword, I am back in screen but the region is killed (wtf) C-a x does nothing apparently Please note the differences between x (lowercase) and X (uppercase). Why is there a mixup between the functionalities of C-a X and C-a x? How can I fix this? I am on CentOS release 5 (Final).
