• How to stop Excel Treating US dates as UK dates?

  I'm in the UK, I've got a problem where I've got a list of dates supplied in US format. Excel seems to treat the ones that are valid in both formats as UK dates, (e.g. 03/01/2012 becomes 3rd of January rather that 1st March), and treat the ones that aren't valid UK dates (e.g. 03/13/2012) as basic text. I assume this choice is something to do with my regional settings. What I want is the system to recognise that this column of text is supplied in US date format, and convert it into the underlying date representation for calculations. How do I do this?

• How can I combine 30,000 images into a timelapse movie?

  I have taken 30,000 still images that I want to combine into a timelapse movie. I have tried QuickTime Pro, TimeLapse 3, and Windows Movie Maker, but with such a huge amount of images, each of the programs fail (I tried SUPER ©, but couldn't get it to work either...?). It seems that all of these programs crash after a few thousand pictures. The images I have are all in .JPG format, at a resolution of 1280x800, and I'm looking for a program that can put these images into a timelapse movie in some kind of lossless format (raw/uncompressed AVI would be fine) for further editing. Does anyone have any ideas, or has anyone tried anything like this with a similar number of pictures?

• Can a processor upgrade cause BSOD?

  I Had the following hardware setup: Phenom II X4 945 Asus M4A97 4GB DDR2 OCZ Radeon HD5850 OCZ Agility 2 120 GB Windows 7 x64 Pro Fully updated (latest drivers and windows update patches) Then I bought an used Phenom II X6 1090T and installed it without formatting. Since that my computer started BSODing almost every time I'm playing any game and with different error messages, like: page fault in non-paged area bad pool header the video memory manager found a problem error in dxgmm1.sys(or something like that) And when it doesn't BSOD the game simply crashes. I have tried: Updating BIOS Reseting BIOS to defaults Reinstalling Video Drivers Installing the latest DirectX All that's left is to do a full format and I don't want to do that since it's going to be a lot of work to fine tune windows to my preferences again. So is my "new" processor defective or do I really need to format the computer? Update: I use a (properly installed) custom cooler from Coolermaster and both the BIOS and the Open Hardware Monitor(Application) attest the CPU is not overheating, so I guess the CPU its defective and since I bought it from a guy over the Internet I'm probably screwed

• centos 6 nfs: logs not showing anywhere

  Can someone please tell me where NFS logs in centos 6? Or perhaps where I can tell NFS to send logs? At the present time, there appears to be no such setting. Trying to get the thing to work without logs is quite frustrating. • can I make Excel always open a delimited text file with "text" translation?

  Hi there, Opening a tab-delimited data file in Excel to view & manipulate the data is a very common operation around here. However, by default Excel (2003/4 or 2007/8) will read the columns in a "General" format, which occasionally does terrible things like turning "1/2" into "2-Jan". Is there a way to tell Excel never to do this, but always process the values as Text, without going through the format wizard, selecting all of the columns, and doing it manually? Extra points if this works in both Mac and Windows versions of Excel.

• Excel Document Size is at 0KB, can't be opened

  After I saved an Excel document, I remembered that I needed to change something in it, so I go back to open it and it said Excel cannot open the file, because the file format or the file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file. I know when I saved before, around 2hours ago, it worked just fine. The document size is at 0KB now. How do I recover this document? Its crucial for my business!

• Should you archive documents before backing up to the cloud?

  I'm planning to add a cloud storage to my personal backup strategy. But now I wonder if it really is worth the trouble of compressing my documents and photos. The Open XML-format already have zip-compression and JPEG is a lossy image format. So there really isn't much benefit in compressing. 20Mb of documents become about 17Mb at the ULTRA preset of 7-zip. One benefit I can imagine is that you can shorten upload time by archiving the folders since it minimizes the number of requests that is needed to be sent to the server at upload and download. So what are your thoughts and experience in this issue? Should you archive your documents before backing them up to the cloud?

  I need to enable SSL on my Tomcat and Apache so I need to generate the (self-signed) certificate using Openssl tool end, about Tomcat, I need to import the certificate using keytool. I know that is necessary to convert (openssl) certificate to Tomcat compatible format. So I need to Use OpenSSL to convert the certificate into an PKCS12 keystore an I need to Import this keystore using keytool and export as Tomcat compatible keystore. But I not understood how can I convert a my certificate (generated with Openssl) into a requested Tomcat format? is possible to explain me all the steps to reach my goal? thanks

• Excel Single column into rows, VBA script insight

  Okay, so much similiar to the below link but mine is a bit different. Paginate Rows into Columns in Excel I have a lot of data in column A, I want to take every 14 to 15 rows and make them a new row with multiple columns. I'm trying to get it into a format where SQL can intake the data. I figured the best way was to get them into rows then make a CSV with the data. So it would like like below: (wow, the format totally didn't stick when posting) column A column B C D etc 1 1 2 3 x 2 16 17 a b 3 x y z 15 16 17 a b c I can clarify if needed, but I'm stumped on how to get the data out of the single column with so many rows in the column. • Converting massive images to PDF, without crashing applications

  I'm trying to work with a large-format scanner, and we are scanning very long documents. Example, one of our documents we cut into two pieces, and one of those pieces is 3633x82486 in resolution. My application, Scanning Master 21+, which comes with the device (Graphtec CSX300-09) can output PDF, however when I try to save to PDF it complains about file being too large. I can successfully output to BMP however. GIMP can even open this BMP, after taking a while to load it. The resulting files range from 200MB - 1.2GB in size. Acrobat refuses to open the BMP format, saying it isn't supported or is damaged (which I know is not true). As I mentioned, the PDF plugin for GIMP crashes when I try to export to PDF. I'm really not sure what is the best tool for this job. So what is the best tool to produce PDF documents of very large images?

• RedirectPermanent vs RewriteRule [R]

  I currently have a perm_redirects.conf file that gets included into my apache config stack where I have lines in the format RedirectPermanent /old/url/path /new/url/path It looks like I'm required to use an absolute URL for the new path, e.g.: http://example.com/new/url/path. In the logs I'm getting "incomplete redirect target /new/url/path was corrected to http://example.com/new/url/path." (paraphrased). In the 2.2 docs for RewriteRule, at the bottom they show the following as being a valid redirect, with only the url-paths instead of an abs URL for the right hand side of the redirect: RewriteRule ^/old/url/path(.*) /new/url/path$1 [R] But I can't seem to get that format to work to replicate the functionality of the RedirectPermanent version. Is this possible?

• How to convert a power point pdf to a pdf that is easy to read on kindle?

  I have several power point presentations as pdfs. I would like to read them on the original kindle in landscape format. When I read the original on the kindle then a single slide won't fit on the kindles display. I thought the easiest way to convert the pdf was to repring it with a pdf printer. However I don't know the paper size to use. I already tried using Calibre as suggested by this question. However the output is not usable because of formatting issues. So what paper size should I use for the pdf printer to reprint them in landscape format or are there any other tools I could use for that task?

• Comparing two specific properties of a CSV using Compare-Object isn't giving the expected results

  I have a list of users from two separate domains. These lists are in CSV format and I only care about the SAMAccountName, which is a field in these CSVs. The code that I'm working with is currently: $domain1 = Import-CSV C:\Scripts\Temp\domain1.xxx.org.csv | Select-Object SAMAccountName $domain2 = Import-CSV C:\Scripts\Temp\domain2.xxx.org.csv | Select-Object SAMAccountName Compare-Object ($domain1) ($domain2) This is returning only a handful of results (which aren't accurate) in this format: @{samaccountname=SomeUser} => Obviously, Compare-Object isn't evaluating the objects as strings. How do I make this work?

• How to prevent Excel rounding numbers or adding redundant 0's?

  I have a column of numbers that appear like this: but the actual value of the shown cell is 20130.153334 Other values have a different number of decimal places. I don't want to add redundant 0's, so I can't just specify a particular number of decimal places to display. I really just want to treat the values as text. I have already changed the format of the cell to Text, as the description for Text is: "Text format cells are treated as text even when a number is in the cell. The cell is displayed exactly as entered.". However, it clearly isn't being displayed exactly as entered! Strangely, if I hit F2 on the cell to go into edit mode, then hit enter, it is then displayed correctly. I can't do this manually for 2000+ records though! How can I prevent the numbers being rounded?

• Why Virtualbox VDI doubles the space of the VM hard disk?

  I have one Xubuntu 12.10 64 bit Virtualbox VM on a Windows 7 64 bit host. It has one dynamic allocated hard disk with VDI format with maximum capacity of 20GB. If I use a command df -h in the VM I get that 5.3GB are in use in th main partition. I have only 2 partitions, one for the ext4 hard disk and another with 512MB of swap. I have no snapshots. The VDI file of this VM has 10.7GB. It is normal this difference of space? It is caused because the VDI format?

• Deleting Windows 8 install

  I have a windows 7 pc, and I had installed windows 8 on an SSD, so it was the only partition on that SSD. I've now realised that I never use it, so I went to uninstall it and followed these steps. The PC now boots into 7, as expected, however I can't delete or format the drive that has windows 8 on it. The format dropdown selection is greyed out, and I tried to just simply delete all of the files and use the disk as is, but as windows 8 isn't there, I no longer have rights to delete all of the files, apparently. The drive in question has 3 partitions, one that I made for the win8 system, and 2 smaller system-created partitions (one 300MB recovery and 1 100MB EFI) How do I go about formatting the drive?

• Comments syntax for Idoc Script

  Maybe this is widely known and I'm late to the party, but I just ran across the syntax for making comments in Idoc Script. It's been something I've been hoping to see for a long time. And it looks like it quietly snuck into the 10gR3 release. So for comments in Idoc Script, you simply [[% surround your comments in these symbols. %]] They can be on the same line or span multiple lines. If you look in the documentation, it still mentions making comments using the syntax. Well, that's certainly not an ideal approach. You're stuffing your comment into an actual variable, it's taking up memory, and you have to watch double-quotes in your comment. A perhaps better way in the old method is to start with my comments . Still not great, but now you're not assigning something to a variable and worrying about quotes. Unfortunately, this syntax only works in places that use the Idoc format. It can't be used in Idoc files that get indexed (.hcsp & .hcsf) and use the <!--$...--> format. For those, you'll need to continue using the older methods. While on the topic, I thought I would highlight a great plug-in to Notepad++ that Arnoud Koot here at Oracle wrote for Idoc Script. It does script highlighting as well as type-ahead/auto-completion for common variables, functions, and services. For some reason, I can never seem to remember if it's DOC_INFO_LATESTRELEASE or DOC_INFO_LATEST_RELEASE, so this certainly comes in handy. I've updated his plug-in to use this new comments syntax. • 500 Metro Style WP7 Icons

  I was inspired by The Noun Project, a project that offers up “Metro-style” icons in SVG format. The project is licensed under a public domain license and while it’s a great project, all of the content is in SVG format. Jon Galloway has a great post (from 2007) talking about the differences between SVG and XAML so I highly recommend that for some background. I thought it would be helpful to the WPF/Windows Phone 7/Silverlight community to provide the content in alternative formats for use in your applications. The Goods I’ve put together a package of the 500 icons (502 actually) in PNG, XAML and the original SVG format along with a couple of sample projects so you can see them in action. There’s a WPF desktop app: And a Windows Phone 7 app: Building It To get all the content first I wrote up a quick program to suck the original SVG files. Luckily they’re all in a common path just named 1.SVG, 2.SVG, and so on. Easy sleazy to grab the contents. Once I had 500 SVG files I used the latest copy of XamlTune, an open source CodePlex project that has a command line conversion tool to convert the directory of SVG files into XAML (the tool also created a PNG file of each SVG so that’s just icing on the cake). Conversions The conversion from SVG to XAML isn’t 100%. While you can just drop the content into a WPF app, it doesn’t work that way for WP7. There are just some small adjustments I made to each format so you’ll have to do the same. Follow the information below or refer to the sample applications. Note that while it does show up in the app (on the emulator or device) it wouldn’t show up in Visual Studio for me. Maybe some XAML guru out there can tell me why. You can just as easily use the PNG files in WP7 but if you want the crispness of vector graphics, go for the XAML version. Of course with XamlTune being open source you could always modify the output of that program to cater it to your app. If you do make a change that’s worthy please consider submitting a patch to the project so everyone can benefit. • Twitter gem - undefined method `stringify_keys’

  Have you been getting the following errors when running the Twitter gem lately ? /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/httparty-0.4.3/lib/httparty/response.rb:15:in `send': undefined method `stringify_keys' for # (NoMethodError) from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/httparty-0.4.3/lib/httparty/response.rb:15:in `method_missing’ from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/mash-0.0.3/lib/mash.rb:131:in `deep_update’ from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/mash-0.0.3/lib/mash.rb:50:in `initialize’ from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/twitter-0.6.13/lib/twitter/search.rb:101:in `new’ from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/twitter-0.6.13/lib/twitter/search.rb:101:in `fetch’ from test.rb:26 It’s because Twitter has been sending back plain text errors that are treated as a string instead of json and can’t be properly ‘Mashed’ by the Twitter gem. Also check http://github.com/jnunemaker/twitter/issues#issue/6. Without diving into the bowels of the Twitter gem or HTTParty, you could ‘begin…rescue’ this error and try again in 5 minutes. I fixed it by overriding the offending code to return nil and checking for a nil response as follows: module Twitter class Search def fetch(force=false) if @fetch.nil? || force query = @query.dup query[:q] = query[:q].join(' ') query[:format] = 'json' #This line is the hack and whole reason we're monkey-patching at all. response = self.class.get('http://search.twitter.com/search', :query => query, :format => :json) #Our patch: response should be a Hash.
