• How to access a site in IIS with no DNS mapping

  In my IIS 7.5 hosted in a Windows Server 2008 R2 I have several websites with no DNS address assigned. Let's take for instance the site (as named in IIS) with site name mySite. I have for this site the standard binding with no host name. Suppose that my server IP address is, for instance, 101.22.23.01. Therefore it seems logic to me that in order to access the website, I should place in the address bar of my browser: [IP_address]/[sitename] in this case: 101.22.23.01/mySite but it does not work. Shall I specify something else in the bindings?

• Trojan infection help please

  Hey, I was browsing some websites and somehow obtained a trojan through some sort of silent download. Google Chrome started acting funny and wouldn't load web pages and neither would internet explorer. Only Firefox worked. I rebooted my computer and as usual logged into my email account as well as my bank account online completely forgetting about the infection. Could my information have been sent to the person or people or wrote the trojan? I downloaded Zone Alarm and took care of the issue, I'm just worried about when I absentmindedly logged into my email account and bank account online while I was infected.

• First request too slow even if I have a load balancer in the back

  I have an Apache 2 on Centos + bind with a wordpress website on it (e.g example.com). I have also set up, on another server in a different contry a load balancer (varnish:80 + nginx 127.0.0.1:8080) for it - which task is to server all static content under /wp-content/. Using Simple DNS editor I added an A entry to cdn.example.com pointing to the server's IP. So no extra work from a 2nd dns server. Then using htaccess I redirect all requests to jpg|gif|css|js files to cdn.example.com. That works and all files are saved on the "cdn" server and served right away. My problem is that for the first time I enter on example.com (e.g after restarting the computer or closing the browser) the load time is 1 up to 3 seconds, while any subsequent page loads take only 300 to 600 miliseconds. I know it might be a DNS issue, but I have done a cache check on several websites and cdn.example.com indicates the right IP. Do you have any ideas where I should dig to solve this first-time slowness?

  I have this IIS7.5 with ARR installed and configured to reverse proxy to another server which is running IIS7. On that IIS7.5 I have applications and simple websites installed. Since configuring a farm, the local application doesn't run with this error message: 502 - Web server received an invalid response while acting as a gateway or proxy server. There is a problem with the page you are looking for, and it cannot be displayed. When the Web server (while acting as a gateway or proxy) contacted the upstream content server, it received an invalid response from the content server. Is it even possible to run both application and routing (reverse proxy) at the same time?

• Windows 7 Home Premium - Unable to View Chinese Characters Properly

  Is there a proper and permanent fix that will restore the display of Chinese Characters on a Windows 7 Home Premium Laptop computer? This problem has been occurring frequently now and a simple reboot no longer does the trick. The square boxes viewed on many applications and websites has been constantly bothering me and I wish to fix it asap. I have done a lot of research on it but have not been successful. Many responses were to install the language packs for Windows 7 Ultimate Users which apparently is not my case or to configure the "Region and Language" settings of the Control Panel, changing the system locale. Does anyone have any suggestions? All would be appreciated!

• Cheapest High Available Web Server [closed]

  I would like to create a high-available setup (e.g. a small cluster) for a webserver, i.e. it will run Apache, PHP and MySQL. There will be between 2-8 small websites running with only very little traffic and workload. High availability is however very important. I don't want to be dependent on 1 datacenter, so there must be a minimum of 2 servers placed in different datacenters, and if one server goes down, the user must experience no or only a minimum of downtime - and no data loss. I have considered Amazon AWS using their Elastic Load Balancing, since it is possible to buy 2 EC2 instances in 2 availability zones and set up load balancing and RDS (Multi-AZ). However this seems rather expensive. Using the AWS price calculator http://calculator.s3.amazonaws.com/calc5.html it totals to 185$/month the first year (including the free tier). Are my calculations incorrect or is there a cheaper way to make this HA setup? Best regards

• startx error no desktop manager

  I have Backtrack 5R2 KDE. I started recovery mode and did a failsafe xorg configuration. After that, I cannot load the KDE manager when I enter the startx command after logging in. Whenever I do a startx command (as root), the result resembles the following: This is not the actual output (I just drew this with MS paint because I cannot do a printscreen). The screen is just black with the icon in the upper left corner. The other pop-up menu appears when left-clicking the mouse. I tried the cp xorg.conf.failsafe xorg.conf advice from other websites with no luck. I have also tried the 'reconfigure option(s)' form the recovery mode with no success.

• 504 Gateway Timeout on server clusters

  Hi All, Here's our scenario: We're running three websites on three web servers hosted on virtual machines running the following: IIS6 Win 2003 Standard Edition Oracle 10g Sitefinity 3.7 We do not have constant control over these servers and something's gone wrong in the interim in that we're getting constant 504 Gateway Timeouts. The other thing that's happening is that if you hit one of the sites, that site is trying to pull themes from one of the sites App_Themes folder in Sitefinity, which of course should not be happening at all. If someone has any ideas on why this should suddenly have started happening I would appreciate it. Many thanks

• Setting up scripts in Amazon EC2 Cloud

  Hello, I am currently running a few perl and python scripts on a windows pc and would like to port over to the Amazon EC2 servers running 64-bit LINUX. The scripts are basic web scrapers that go to a variety of websites, get data and then save daily as csv files. I would like to install these in the cloud and get them running in an automated way so that they will run without my intervention. Also given that I don't want to lose all the data if the instance crashes, I should also upload the csv files to Amazon S3. Any idea how I can do this? • Can I prevent Internet Explorer 8 from running scripts until the page is loaded?

  When trying to veiw a number of different websites in IE8, I get the following error message: HTML Parsing Error: Unable to modify the parent container element before the child element is closed (KB927917) On investigating the error message, it appears the script is trying to modify parts of the page before it is fully loaded. Is there a setting in IE8 I can change to prevent scripts from running until the page is fully loaded? EDIT: The sites in question used to work just fine, until I had to re-install IE8 for a seperate issue. Then they stopped working.

  I need to be able to track Web Sites visited on a computer and send them to an email address on a daily basis. Keylogger software seems like too much, I want something lightweight that simply monitors websites visited and forwards them on. I was hoping for freeware, but if it's cheap/simple and easy to use I'm willing to pay. • In Varnish, is it normal for the number of freed bytes to be 60% of those allocated?

  I have an installation of Varnish 3.02 on an Amazon EC2 Medium Linux instance in front of two relatively low-traffic websites. After an uptime of 2 hours, there are 3400 objects in the cache. Using varnishstat, I checked the variables SMA.s0.c_bytes and SMA.s0.c_freed, which I assume correspond to the total number of bytes allocated since startup and the number freed, respectively. No objects should have had time to expire during these two hours, but still about 60% of the memory allocated since startup (330MB out of 560MB) has already been freed. Do you know if this is normal? If not, do you know what kind of configuration could be wrong?

• Need to know who is hogging my bandwidth?

  I have an ethernet connection to my iMac and with Internet sharing I am broadcasting the wireless network from my mac rather than using a wireless router. I use it to connect other devices wirelessly to the internet. But this makes all the traffic flow through my iMac. I wanted a way to analyze the traffic so that I know what connected devices are hogging the bandwidth at a given time and from which websites? I installed wireshark for mac and played around a little but it seems like an overkill when you first look at it. Can someone please help with few instructions to get what I need or any other way other than using wireshark? Thanks Dev.

• Can I make Firefox ignore/interpret font sizes specified in pixels?

  Hi all, I have an 11.1" notebook display with 1366x768 resolution, which gives it a DPI of 141. I'm running GNOME and have configured the DPI. Everything works OK except web browsing - far too many websites specify their font sizes in pixels, which ends up with very small text on a high DPI display. My ideal solution would be for Firefox to interpret an absolute pixel size in terms of normal DPI and display it appropriately for my DPI (eg scale it by 141/96). Obviously this would cause problems on the occasion where graphics had been pixel-aligned with fonts in some way, but I imagine that would cause me far less of a headache than either reading minute text, or scaling the text manually each time. Our application is written in php and should be able to do the following: send mails to our own users "from: [email protected]" send mails from our clients to their clients "from: [email protected]" We don't need to take care of incoming mails, just send out mails with the correct from and reply-to addresses. We cannot make this work using Google Apps (limited to our own domain in the from-field) and we cannot make google apps or google apps domains for all our clients, so we are looking for another simple to manage and set up solution. • Troubleshooting a slow database server with no load

  I'm getting ready to soft launch my website and I've run into some problems with what I think is being caused by my MySQL database running on Fedora. All websites run fine, just as I'd expect, but any pages that establish a database connection hang until the connection is established, and then bang, the site loads as it should. Ex. My landing page (http://www.thrusong.com) doesn't make a database connection and loads quickly. User profile pages (http://www.thrusong.com/john) make a database connection and load slowly, even though most of the data comes from memcached and the database currently has no load on it. This problem just came up yesterday when my router died and I began using my Pace 2Wire modem with built-in router. Before, my old router was set to handle everything. My ISP says the settings in the modem are correct. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

• Which SATA controller is better to use with Windows Server 2008 R2 64 bit?

  We're preforming some hardware upgrade on our server machines. As a part of this process, we have to install some additional disk drives. Unfortunately, total number of drives will become 7 or 8, while all of our motherboards have only 6 SATA ports. Obviously, we need additional disk controllers. For now, we've tested Silicon Image (actually, no-name) and Adaptec controllers, both on SiI3132 chip, and got some problems with drivers for them: Silicon Image drivers are not installing at all, and Adaptec ones are installing, but the system says they're not signed and becomes unbootable. We're tryed both drivers from controllers' CD's and latest versions from manufacturers' websites, and no luck. So, can you recommend some SATA controllers that will really work without tambourine dances on mentioned OS (we need just 2 SATA ports and PCI-E, while RAID and any other features are no-matter)? From other websites, I've found out how to set and remove them, using both xxx-WebConfiguration and xxx-WebConfigurationProperty. • Bash script getting automatically deleted from Ubuntu 12.04 Server?

  I'm running a bash script on an ubuntu 12.04 through cron. The script works fine for a few weeks (runs daily backups of websites, mysql databases, and copies to Amazon S3). However, twice now I've noticed that backups stopped happening. Both times the backup script (backupscript.sh) located in my home folder was no longer there. No one else has access to this server, so nothing was manually changed on the server and no one deleted the file by mistake. The cron job (nano /etc/crontab) still references this script, but the script itself disappears. What could cause this to happen? Does Ubuntu delete the script if it runs into some sort of error?

  How do I get the websites that I visit to stop localizing the language probably according to my IP location? This is an website specific issue because, for example economist.com and superuser.com do not do it, but Google Checkout and craigslist.org are doing it. Is there a way to setup Ubuntu and Firefox so that English will always be used for all web pages displayed? Edit: Of course many webpages have a link to an English version, but sometimes they don't. For example I believe such links usually appear on the root resource but sometimes I see non-English languages on child resources where such links do not appear. Example: most Blogger.com blogs appear in English but when I go to the blogger's profile ("view my complete profile"), it appears in another language that matches my geographic location.

  I have a 48 port HP Procurve Switch 2610 (J9088A) that can handle 13.0 million PPS (packets per second) and features wire speed switching capacity at 17.6Gbps. First off, what does that REALLY mean? Where do I start when trying to figure out if my office (with 70 employees) will be well setup with this switch? How to calculate through-put based on a user average load of X MB per day? 90% of the folks will only be sending email, access random websites, etc... the other 10% will be conducting heavier tasks like moving image files (10 MB) across network shares, constant external FTP streams through the switch to a server etc... Is this switch good enough?

I have point these to the external IP address. bind is ok, dig is onerror, Apache2 reload ok 1.) If I set the following, I can only see the first one alphabetically.   Hello, I've tried to install vmware server 2 on a small business server 2008 host and IIS 7 stopped working. Everytime I tried to access any website on the server including OWA I get HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable. I've tried to restart the IIS services and websites with no luck. Removed vmware server and the problem persists. There are no errors in the application logs concerning IIS or anything related. I'm stumped. Does anyone have an idea what's happenning here and how to fix it?

  I'm trying to find out what are the standard service/tech-support response times that are expected of a software vendor. We're being asked by a customer to enter into an agreement regarding technical support for a software application that we're selling. Basically, I'm interested in the typical turn-around time (i.e. time to respond, time to resolution) based on the severity of the issue. And also, I'm interested in the financial structure of such agreements: i.e. charge/incident, bundle with unlimited incidents/customer etc. Any information or suggestions of where to find such information (even examples of other software vendors websites) would be greatly appreciated!
