• Data import wizard library for .Net?

  Does anyone know of a 3rd party data import wizard that can be embedded into applications? It should import from Excel, Access, SQLServer, csv, tab-separated flat file, XML, Oracle etc. We have a fixed data structure within our application and the user should be able to configure the wizard to match his/her import fields to our own data structure. The wizard should be a library of sorts – preferably a .Net type library. We may want to have it both web-based and desktop based (hence we may need an ASP.Net controls version and a Winforms version). We may also want integration with WPF and Silverlight. If there’s no UI wizard available, does anyone know of a non-UI library that supports easily configurable import from many, many different datasources?

• How do I get developers to treat test code as "real" code?

  In the last two companies I've been at, there is an overriding mentality among developers that it's okay to write unit tests in a throw-away style. Code that they would never write in the actual product suddenly becomes OK in the unit tests. I'm talking Rampant copying and pasting between tests Code styling rules not followed Hard-coded magic strings across tests No object-oriented thought or design for integration tests, mocks or helper objects (250 line single-function tests!) .. and so on. I'm highly dissatisfied with the quality of the test code. Generally we do not do code reviews on our test assemblies, and we also do not enforce style or code analysis of them on our build server. Is that the only way to overcome this inertia about test quality? I'm looking for ideas to take to our developers, without having to go to higher management saying that we need to use resources for enforcement of test quality (although I will if I have to). Any thoughts or similar experiences?

• SOLRNET/SOLR Logging: Need to log specific information on whether a document is added or updated.

  Hi guys, I am having a big problem trying to find a logging option for our SOLR integration. Recently I have started using SOLRNET to add documents from the database in batches as previously we were just renewing the entire index every morning. So far this solution is working very well and is exactly what we wanted. However, I am in need of a solution that will log every document being added and can also differentiate between an "add" or an "update". It seems posting to solr handles it in a way where "if the document exists, overwrite it; If not then add" but in the catalina logfile this operations looks identical no matter what the scenario. My question is; Are there any logging solutions out there that can accomplish this, the current default logging options in solr that log to catalina are insufficient. Many thanks for any help.

• How to JBoss/Blazeds clustering and channel failover

  Hi, I'm stuck with jboss and blazeds clusterization. What I have now is : 2 Jboss Instances, running in all mode One load balancer with apache and mod_jk, as suggested by Jboss docs A spring/flex integration app A flex application that I do not want to throw errors when one of my JBoss instances falls I find Adobe documentation really lacking, and being new at clustering, jgroups and balancing I cannot find how to deploy my app in clustered environment. From what I understood if configured correctly blazeds should tell flex client about failover servers upon connection. Then if flex client can't connect to the main server it goes to another. But the hard part for me is getting there. Can someone point me to the right direction? Thanks in advance

• StyleCop 4.4 works inside VS.NET 2010 but not MSBuild command line

  We are seeing extremely strange results where StyleCop will correctly report violations when run from within Visual Studio 2010. However, when we run msbuild on the command line (e.g., "MSBuild.exe mySolution.sln") it reports "No violations encountered" when clearly there are the same violations as when we ran it within Visual Studio. Is this a bug in the latest release of StyleCop? Or in the 2010 integration? Is there anything you can tell me about possible differences with StyleCop executing from within VS.NET versus MSBuild command line? Thanks.

• MEF part unable to import Autofac autogenerated factory

  This is a (to me) pretty weird problem, because it was already running perfectly but went completely south after some unrelated changes. I've got a Repository which imports in its constructor a list of IExtensions via Autofacs MEF integration. One of these extensions contains a backreference to the Repository as Lazy(Of IRepository) (lazy because of the circular reference that would occur). But as soon as I try to use the repository, Autofac throws a ComponentNotRegisteredException with the message "The requested service 'ContractName=Assembly.IRepository()' has not been registered." That is, however, not really correct, because when I break right after the container-build and explore the list of services, it's there - Exported() and with the correct ContractName. I'd appreciate any help on this... Michael

• Copying data across tabs

  Hello, I got two different forms in two different tabs. One has data from our system and the other one is an interface of another, external, system in wich we need to copy data into (XML or API integration not an option here) The this is that, having open both forms - in two different tabs - i need a greasemonkey script or something similar that allows my to copy data from one form to the other (using the getValue method in Javascript). The problem right now is that I cannot figure out how to reference with a greasemonkey script one particular tab or window (to rad data from or write data to). Do you think it would be possible to do what I'm thinking to do? THANKS

• Is wordpress a good platform for webapp development?

  I am planning a webapp to control bank paying orders. In a quick review, the user goes online and creates a payment order. This order goes to other people that pays it and register the payment on the system. The system keeps track of all the payments, keeping the account balance up-to-date. The system needs a login system, bank integration, and to support at some point thousands of clients. We can find articles on the web about the benefits of using wordpress platform to build webapps. However, I could not find discussion with counterarguments to user wordpress. As the platform the most important choice in webapp project, I would to know more about the pitfalls and harms for choosing wordpress. The question is: What are the benefits and harms for choosing wordpress as a development platform for a webapp that need to be integrated with other system (backend systems) and to handle thousands of users (does it scale up?)?

• Is it feasible to write a Firefox plugin to make use of ActiveX control on Windows?

  I use an ActiveX control called TAPIEx enabling TAPI phone system integration using MS Access 2000 (+Visual Basic). I want to turn this Access database into a web app with the clients running Firefox (all on internal network). Since Firefox doesnt support ActiveX is it feasible for me to write a Firefox plugin that in turn utilizes the ActiveX control? With regard to how plugins work - Would I be able to call 'functions' of the plugin from page script (eg dial call specifying phone number, check if calls in process)? Would adding these functions to the Firefox right click menu 'globally' inside Firefox be easier? Hope you guys can help. Note I'm not a fulltime programmer; I just need to know how steep the learning curve will be or even if my idea is possible! • Automating Portlet Deployment to WebSphere Portal Server 6.1

  I've recently started on a project to develop some portlets which will run on IBM WebSphere Portal Server 6.1. Does anyone know of any scripts, Ant tasks, Maven plugins, etc. for publishing a portlet to Portal Server? In the WebSphere Portlet Factory plugin for eclipse it is possible to "publish" a portlet project to Portal Server instance, however I'd like to know what's going on underneath the hood here (or at least how to replicate the behaviour) so that I can do it in other places (i.e. from continuous integration server). UPDATE: From what I've read it sounds like the Portlet Factory publishes using a WebSphere JMX client. Does anyone know where I can find more details on this?

Is there good book around that I can take with me on a roadtrip while it is taking me on a trip through all (most) of the above, delivering an 10,000 foot view on modern software archiceture and desing principles and approaches.

• Deploying only changed part of a website with git to ftp (svn2web for git)

  I'm having a website with many big images file. The source (as well as the images) is maintained with git. I wish to deploy that via ftp to a bluehost-like cheap server. I do not wish to deploy all the website each time (so that I won't have to upload too many unchanged files over and over), but to do roughly the following: In a git repository, mark the last deployed revision with a tag "deployed". When I say "deploy revision X", find out which files has changed between revision X and revision tagged as deploy, and upload just them. It is similar in spirit to svn2web. But I want that for DVCS. Mercurial alternative will be considered. It's a pretty simple script to write, but I'd rather not to reinvent the wheel if there's some similar script on the web. Capistrano and fab seems to know only how to push the whole revision, in their SCM integration. So I don't think I can currently use them.

  Hi all, I have a J2EE application that needs some extensive integration testing. I am using Jmeter to generate HTTP POST requests. So far I manage to send them to the server correctly but the xml is static. I am looking for a way to insert dynamic/random values into the XML and then send it to the server. Something like a PreProcessor but I am not sure how it is done. Can anyone provide: 1. JMeter tutorials? 2. How to generate dynamic/random xml content to HTTP request 3. • Best Design for a Facebook clone on GAE Java

  My current App is written in Python on GAE which can do Contacts management, Genealogy, Social Networking, Photo sharing, Telecom Integration (SMS, iVRS, URL Billing), CRON and performs business logic operations for our Mobile Apps. Current Architecture indlues python, django, jquery, memcache and few telecom APIs. Now, It feels that an SOA Architecture on GAE using Java would be really ideal and scalable for this kind of App where we want to build new features like widgets that users can turn on or off and third party developers can also develop and deploy features. Please correct me or improve the following design decision: UI (Current plan is GWT) Sessions, Security and ACL (Spring MVC 2.x) Reusable Business Logic components (?) Implementation of Web Services (?) Your advice would really help.

• Experimenting with data to determine value - migration/methods?

  Hey guys, I have a LOT of data available to me, and want to experiment with data that isn't currently being used in production. The obvious solution seems to be to make a copy of production data and integrate it with what I want to play around with, but I was wondering if there was a better (less expensive?) way to do this. Both isolation and integration are important. I'd like to be able to keep lightweight/experimental data assets apart from high volume production data, but also be able to integrate (RELATIVELY) painlessly if experimental assets are deemed useful.   I want to use some third party themes (like synthetica http://www.javasoft.de/synthetica/themes/) in my swing appliaction. i am using eclipse ide, got the jar file of theme and did the following modification(according to the readme file from the theme) in my code try { UIManager.setLookAndFeel(new SyntheticaBlackMoonLookAndFeel()); } catch (Exception e) { e.printStackTrace(); } but after this modification its showing the following error The type de.javasoft.plaf.synthetica.SyntheticaLookAndFeel cannot be resolved. • Hudson CI project doesn't run NetBeans JUnit tests of dependent projects

  I have a set of NetBeans java projects with dependencies between them. I added the project at the top of the dependency tree to Hudson for continuous integration. Everything works fine, except that the unit tests of dependent projects don't get run by Hudson. This is because the ant scripts that NetBeans creates has dependent projects setup to run the "jar" target and not a target that also runs the unit tests. I could add ant build steps for each dependent project in Hudson to run the unit tests, but I was hoping there's a simpler solution.

  hi, I am facing critical problem for integration of WAS Server-Apache Server.I am using the WAS server for the connection pooling for the database calling...and my webpage is hosted in the apache server and the webpage serarch box is calling the WAS Server and i am using struts frame work for autocomplete action... but it is working in IE of all versions.. but it is not working any browser... the JS file HTTPsuggestions are going to the structs frame work... but the response is is giving as null even i am giving the xmlHttpGetSuggestions.status =200 || xmlHttpGetSuggestions.status =0 but i am not getting the autocomplete feature. can you please help to slove this problem..... • TypeInitilazationException When Getting an NHibernate Session

  I’ve run into what appears to be an NHibernate config problem. Basically, I ran up a simple proof of concept persistence integration test using NUnit, the test simply querys an Oracle database and successfully returns the last record received by the underlying table. However, when the assemblies are taken out of the NUnit test environment and deployed as they would be for an actual application build, my call for an NHibernate session results in a ‘TypeInitializationException’ whilst executing the code line: sessionFactory = New Configuration().Configure().BuildSessionFactory() The application is a vb.net console app running against an Oracle 9.2 database, using a ‘coding framework’ published on the web by Bill McCafferty entitled 'NHibernate Best Practices with ASP.NET' (pre S#harp Architecture). • Why is SVN better than VSS? [closed]

  I've heard soooo many people complain about VSS, and noooo people complaining about SVN. We use SVN on my work project. It's slow, regularly freezes up my IDE, and has wonky behavior like looking for a database server every time I right-click the Solution node in my Solution Explorer. When I used VSS, everything worked beautifully, except for access restrictions which I of course blame on the people who control access. VSS is built by Microsoft and thus has great integration with Visual Studio. SVN is written by pretty much anybody with some free time (right?) and thus kinda works most of the time... And I honestly get the impression they had a dozen different directions in the design instead of one. So why do I keep hearing that SVN is better than VSS?

• DWR and Jquery into spring MVC 2.5

  Hi, From my shallow reading, Spring MVC does not support jquery directly. It does enable integration with DWR framework. From my understanding of DWR, it is an ajax framework that allows you to call javas methods from javascript. Can I use both in my application? With Jquery handling most of the javascript code and client side interaction and DWR making the ajax calls? I am leaning towards learning jquery but there is no out of the box support for it in spring 2.5.

• How to fake Azure Table Storage in .NET for Unit Testing?

  I am working on a system that uses Azure Table Storage. In other systems (e.g., SQL, File based, etc), I can write a fake that allows me to test my data persistence logic. However, I can't see an easy way to create a fake for the Azure Table Service. I could create a new IIS project that behaves the same way, but that isn't a good way to write a unit test, it is more of an integration test. Any thoughts on how to unit test data access code that uses the Azure Table Storage client? Thanks, Erick

• How do you share your git repository with other developers?

  I have a central git repository that everyone pushes to for testing and integration, but it only is pushed to when features are 'ready'. While in the middle of a big task, developers frequently have many commits that stay on their harddrives. Sometimes in the middle of these projects I'd like to either see what another developer is doing, or show him how I've done something. I'd like to be able to tell another developer to just "pull my working copy" The only way I can think of is having everyone run ssh on their development machines and adding accounts or ssh keys for everyone, but this is a huge privacy and permissions nightmare, and seems like a lot of work to maintain. Should we just be pushing to that central repository in these cases? Should we be pushing after every local commit?

  Hi, First post here in SO. I have a question within the area of CMS (RedDot) and possible integration of some Lotus Notes functionality. I'm very fresh in both areas. From my short research (did not find very much material regarding RedDot) I got the following: Contents in RedDot CMS can be accessed (and modified?) via the RQL API. (basicly xml messages) There exists a API developed for Java (jRQL). Lotus Notes has a developer kit called Lotus Expeditor Toolkit. My vague question is something like this: Is it possible to integrate a some kind of "content approver/manager" or any other useful CMS functionality from Lotus Notes into the RedDot CMS system? In that case I was thinking of using the jRQL and Lotus Expediton Toolkit so that the back end is fully using Java. Or is there any better solution? Regards Fredrik

• Machine learning in OCaml or Haskell?

  I'm hoping to use either Haskell or OCaml on a new project because R is too slow. I need to be able to use support vectory machines, ideally separating out each execution to run in parallel. I want to use a functional language and I have the feeling that these two are the best so far as performance and elegance are concerned (I like Clojure, but it wasn't as fast in a short test). I am leaning towards OCaml because there appears to be more support for integration with other languages so it could be a better fit in the long run (e.g. OCaml-R). Does anyone know of a good tutorial for this kind of analysis, or a code example, in either Haskell or OCaml?
