  Let's say I have two tables with several fields and in every table there is a primary key which is a technical id generated by a database sequence: table1 table2 ------------- ------------- field11 <pk> field21 <pk> field12 field22 field11 and field21 are generated by sequences. Also there is a n:m-relationship between table1 und table2, designed in table3: table3 ------------- field11 <fk> field21 <fk> The ids in table1 und table2 are generated during the insert statement: INSERT INTO table1 VALUES (table1_seq1.NEXTVAL, ... INSERT INTO table2 VALUES (table2_seq1.NEXTVAL, ... Therefore I don't know the primary key of the added row in the data-access-layer of my program, because the generation of the pk happens completely in the database. What's the best practice to update table3 now? How can I gain access to the primary key of the rows I just inserted?

The same insert statement works from within a query analyzer. Do I need to perform a commit? Is there a Commit method?   I need to find a way to do an INSERT INTO table A but one of the values is something that comes from a lookup on table B, allow me to illustrate. I have the 2 following tables: Table A: A1: String A2: Integer value coming from table B A3: More Data Table B: B1: String B2: Integer Value Example row of A: {"Value", 101, MoreData} Example row of B: {"English", 101} Now, I know I need to INSERT the following into A {"Value2", "English", MoreData} but obviously that won't work because it is expecting an Integer in the second column not the word "English", so I need to do a lookup in Table B first. Something like this: INSERT INTO tableA (A1, A2, A3) VALUES ("Value2", SELECT B2 FROM tableB where B1="English", MoreData); Obviously this doesn't work as-is ... Any suggestions?

For some of those classes, however, the insert() method must have additional parameters, so that they instead of overriding it I overload the method of the base class with the parameters required, for example: public class SampleClass extends BaseClass { public void insert(Object object, Long param){ // Do Something } } Now, if i instantiate the SampleClass class, i have two insert() methods: SampleClass sampleClass = new SampleClass(); sampleClass.insert(Object object); sampleClass.insert(Object object, Long param); what i'd like to do is to hide the insert() method defined in the base class, so that just the overload would be visible: SampleClass sampleClass = new SampleClass(); sampleClass.insert(Object object, Long param); Could this be done in OOP?

  What are the implications of using a INSERT INTO foo ... SELECT FROM bar JOIN baz ... style insert statement versus using the same SELECT statement to dump (bar, baz) to a file, and then insert into foo by loading the file? In my messing around, I haven't seen a huge difference. I would assume the former would use more memory, but the machine that this runs on has 8GB of RAM, and I never even see it go past half used. Are there any huge (or long term) performance implications that I'm not seeing? Advantages/disadvantages of either?

  Hi! I want to upload a large file of size 10M max to my mysql database. Using .htaccess i changed the PHP's own file upload limit to "10485760" = 10M, i am able to upload files upto 10M size without any problem. But i can not insert the file in database if it is more that 1M in size. i am using file_get_contents to read all file data and pass it to the insert query as a string to be inserted into a LONGBLOB field. But files with more than 1M size is not being added to database, though i can use print_r($_FILES) to examine that the file uploaded correctly. Any help will be appreciated and i will need it within next 6 hours. • Unable to stretch TableLayout to screen width

  I've tried unsuccessfully for quite a few hours now to simply get a TableLayout to scale to the full screen. I've tried stretchColumns, shrinkColumns, (specifying the column index or using *) you name it. It's almost as if the parent element (TableLayout) is completely ignoring 'android:layout_width="fill_parent"'. I've read through similar questions here, though they haven't solved it for me. The XML below has 3 rows, and the table always shrink wraps to the size of the content. Apparently I'm too new to post pictures(?) • ListActivity problem when using with RelativeLayout

When I add it and change the activity to extend a ListActivity instead of just an Activity, I'm getting a Force Close. Using 1.5. Does a ListView not work embedded in a RelativeLayout?   Hi there, I have an emote selector that opens up when a user clicks an entry in a diary. The way I've worked it is that the emote selector panel lives hidden at the top of the page. When a user clicks on the 'emote control' associated with an entry, I use JavaScript to grab the HTML of the emote selector panel from the top of the page and insert it next to the entry. Using Firebug, here's what the finished product would look like in the page (snippet from element inspect). • Optimize MySQL query (ngrams, COUNT(), GROUP BY, ORDER BY)

  I have a database with thousands of companies and their locations. I have implemented n-grams to optimize search. I am making one query to retrieve all the companies that match with the search query and another one to get a list with their locations and the number of companies in each location. The query I am trying to optimize is the latter. Maybe the problem is this: Every company ('anunciante') has a field ('estado') to make logical deletes. So, if 'estado' equals 1, the company should be retrieved. When I run the EXPLAIN command, it shows that it goes through almost 40k rows, when the actual result (the reality matching companies) are 80. How can I optimize this? • codeigniter not being able to get the full param from url?

  Im having a weird issue that i cant seem to fix. It's dealing with viewing a company and adding a location to that company. when viewing a company, my url would look like this: domain.com/company/view/415 So clearly 415 is the ID of company, the company shows up correctly on my company view page. Now comes the weird part. when clicking on an "Add Location" link, which would take me to : domain.com/location/add/415 so once again this should be saying Location / Add / 415 (company ID 415) on this page, if i do it will echo 4 (instead of 415...the company id) if the company id is 754, the php echo $data['id'] would echo 7 (instead of 754). So its stripping the last 2 numbers off the Company ID. • Responsive Design for your ADF Faces Web Applications

  Responsive web applications are a common pattern for designing web pages that adjust their UI based on the device that access them. With the increase in the number of ADF applications that are being accessed from mobile phones and tablet we are getting more and more questions around this topic. Steven Davelaar wrote a comprehensive article covering key concepts in this area that you can find here. The article focuses on what I would refer to as server adaptive application, where the server adapts the UI it generates based on the device that is accessing the server. However there is one more technique that is not covered in that article and can be used with Oracle ADF - it is CSS manipulation on the client that can achieve responsive design. I'll cover this technique in this blog entry. The main advantage of this technique is that the UI manipulation does not require the server to send over a new UI when a change is needed. This for example allows your page to change immediately when you change the orientation of your device. (By the way this example was developed for one of the seminars in the upcoming Oracle ADF OTN Virtual Developer Day). In the demo that you'll see below you'll see a single page that changes the way it is displayed based on the orientation of the device. Here is the page with the tablet in landscape and portrait: To achieve this I'm using a CSS media query in my page template that changes the display property of a couple of style classes that are used in my page.
