• determining server config

  I have recently set up a Linux server for my college which also hosts the college website and other downloadables. This server is linked to outside world using a leased line connection of 1mbps capacity. My problem is that the users complain that the downloads from the server are very slow, how can I imporve this? What things should I be looking at. My current server config: Dell vostro260s with 4Gb of ram and i3 processor.

• How bad is it to use display: none in CSS?

  I've heard many times that it's bad to use display: none for SEO reasons, as it could be an attempt to push in irrelevant popular keywords. A few questions: Is that still received wisdom? Does it make a difference if you're only hiding a single word, or perhaps a single character? If you should avoid any use of it, what are the preferred techniques for hiding (in situations where you need it to become visible again on certain conditions)? Some references I've found so far: Matt Cutts from 2005 in a comment If you're straight-out using CSS to hide text, don't be surprised if that is called spam. I'm not saying that mouseovers or DHTML text or have-a-logo-but-also-have-text is spam; I answered that last one at a conference when I said "imagine how it would look to a visitor, a competitor, or someone checking out a spam report. If you show your company's name and it's Expo Markers instead of an Expo Markers logo, you should be fine. If the text you decide to show is 'Expo Markers cheap online discount buy online Expo Markers sale ...' then I would be more cautious, because that can look bad." And in another comment on the same article We can flag text that appears to be hidden using CSS at Google. To date we have not algorithmically removed sites for doing that. We try hard to avoid throwing babies out with bathwater. (My emphasis) Eric Enge said in 2008 The legitimate use of this technique is so prevalent that I would rarely expect search engines to penalize a site for using the display: none attribute. It’s just very difficult to implement an algorithm that could truly ferret out whether the particular use of display: none is meant to deceive the search engines or not. Thanks in advance, Andy

• Ubuntu 12.04 installation never finishes

  I am trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 on an old Dell Latitude C400 laptop previously running windows XP using an Ubuntu install CD. The OS runs fine off the CD if a bit slow, and the installation starts off fine. However once the progress bar is filled I get put back to the desktop and nothing happens, first I assumed that the installation was completed but when I restarted the computer and booted from the hard drive nothing happened. I tried to install a few more times but the same thing happens. Am I doing something wrong? I do not get a error message or a installation complete notification. Is there any way I could get some kind of debug screen or log to see if something went wrong or at least follow the installation progress in more detail. Thanks for the help.

• Review of Samsung Focus Windows Phone 7

  I recently acquired a Samsung Focus Windows Phone 7 device from AT&T and wanted to share what I thought of it as an end-user. Before I get started, here are several of my write-ups for the Windows Phone 7. You may want to check out the second article titled: Hands-on WP7 Review of Prototype Hardware. Samsung Focus i917 Phone Size: Perfect! I have been carrying around a Dell Streak (Android) and it is about half the size. It is really nice to have a phone that fits in your pocket without a lot of extra bulk. I bought a case for the Focus and it is still a perfect size.  The phone just feels right. Screen: It has a beautiful Super AMOLED 480x800 screen. I only wish it supported a higher resolution. The colors are beautiful especially in an Xbox Live Game.   3G: I use AT&T and I've had spotty reception. This really can't be blamed on the phone as much as the actual carrier. Battery: I've had excellent battery life compared to my iPhone and Android devices. I usually use my phone throughout the day on and off and still have a charge at the end of the day.  Camera/Video: I'm still looking for the option to send the video to YouTube or the Image to Twitter. The images look good, but the phone needs a forward facing camera. I like the iPhone/Android (Dell Streak) camera better. Built-in Speaker: Sounds great. It’s not a wimpy speaker that you cannot hear.  CPU: Very smooth transitioning from one screen to another. The prototype Windows Phone 7 that I had, was no where near as smooth. (It was also running a slower processor though). OS: I actually like the OS but a few things could be better. CONS: Copy and Paste (Supposed to come in the next update) We need more apps (Pandora missing was a big one for me and Slacker’s advertisement sucks!). As time passes, and more developers get on board then this will be fixed. The browser needs some major work. I have tried to make cross-platform (WP7, Android, iPhone and iPad) web apps and the browser that ships with WP7 just can’t handle it.  Apps need to be organized better. Instead of throw them all on one screen, it would help to allow the user to create categories. PROS: Hands down the best gaming experience on a phone. I have all three major phones (iphone, android and wp7). Nothing compares to the gaming experience on the WP7. The phone just works. I’ve had a LOT of glitches with my Android device. I’ve had maybe 2 with my WP7 device. Exchange and Office support are great. Nice integration with Twitter/Facebook and social media. Easy to navigate and find the information you need on one screen. Let’s look at a few pictures and we will wrap up with my final thoughts on the phone. WP7 Home Screen. Back of the phone is as stylish. It is hard to see due to the shadow but it is a very thin phone. What’s included? Manuals Ear buds Data Cable plus Power Adapter Phone Click a picture to enlarge So, what are my final thoughts on the Phone/OS? I love the Samsung Focus and would recommend it to anyone looking for a WP7 device. Like any first generation product, you need to give it a little while to mature. Right now the phone is missing several features that we are all used to using. That doesn’t mean a year from now it will be in the same situation. (I sure hope we won’t). If you are looking to get into mobile development, I believe WP7 is the easiest platform to develop from. • Problem with ATI Radeon HD 7670M on Ubuntu 12.10

  I updated from Ubuntu 12.04 to 12.10 a couple of days back. My machine is a Dell Inspiron 15R with a Radeon HD 7670M Graphic Driver. When I was using 12.04, I was able to install the propriety driver using the notification you usually get. But after the upgrade, the graphic driver is not getting installed. I am not getting the notification to install the driver And I also tried to follow the steps given - What is the correct way to install ATI Catalyst Video Drivers (fglrx)? I tried the legacy as well as the usual installation procedure Both ways I failed and my graphics went to the fallback, disabling Unity Note: My laptop is getting heated to 80 degrees and can shut down at any point. Please help.

• Internet connection lost for browser but still there for transmission

  I brought Dell Inspiron N5050 few months back. from day 1 i am getting problem with wired connection, i am able to use web browser for few minutes then all of the sudden i lost internet connection but i don't know why transmission is still able to download torrent from internet. today i installed steadyflow download manager and i see it is also downloading fine but beside these everything fails to connect to internet. one more thing internet connection is recovered automatically after few minutes. But this problem occurred repeatedly I have reinstalled ubuntu 12.04 three times, but problem is still there

• How can I get a Belkin N600 DB (F9L1101v1) to work on Ubuntu 12,04 64-Bit

  I could use some assistance to trying to get a Belkin N600 DB Wireless Dual-Band USB Adapter to work on a Dell Inspiron 1525 with 64-Bit Ubuntu 12.04. The device won't work out of the box. Tried to go the NDISWrapper route, but using the GUI, received the following message: Module could not be loaded. Error was: FATAL: Module ndiswrapper not found. Is the ndiswrapper module installed? Despite the fact that it showed up listed in the GUI, the device still did not function properly. How should I proceed from here?

• Pagination, Duplicate Content, and SEO

  Please consider a list of items (forum comments, articles, shoes, doesn't matter) which are spread over multiple pages. Different sort orders are supported (by date, by popularity, by price, etc). So, an URL might look like this (I use the query style here to simplify things): /items?id=1234&page=42&sort=popularity /items?id=1234&page=5&sort=date Now, in terms of SEO, I think I should be worried about duplicate content. After all, each item appears at least as many times as there are sort orders. I've seen Matt Cutts talking about the rel=canonical link tag, but he also said that the canonical page should have very similar content. But this is not the case here because page #1 in a non-canonical sort order might have completely different items than page #1 in the canonical sort order. For a given non-canonical page, there is no clear canonical page listing all the same items, so I think rel=canonical won't help here. Then I thought about using the noindex meta tag on all pages with non-canonical sort order, and not using it on all pages with canonical sort order. However, if I use that method, what will happen with backlinks that are going to non-canonical pages -- will they still spread their page rank juice, even though the first page googlebot (or any other crawler) is going to encounter is marked as "noindex"? Can you please comment on my problem and what you think is the best solution? If you think you have a better solution, please consider that 1) I do not want to use Javascript for this, 2) I do not want all the items to be on one page. Thank you.

  When saving a doc file (MS office 2003) as a doc file, libreoffice crashes and the file without any updates goes into recovery mode ... I installed mint14 from scratch and did not modify anything the odd thing with mint13 and libreoffice, there is no problem (save as works fine) with an upgraded mint14, there is no problem (save as works fine) this happed on acer one d522 machine and a no-name PC (amd based) both are running a 64 bit version of mint (virgin install) the other machines : - acer X1370 upgraded mint14 and - a dell 1520 (mint13 out of the box) do not show this proble please help... something I forgot or a bug? • MediaTemple tcpsndbuf QoS Alerts

  I'm hosting with MediaTemple on a (dv) Dedicated-Virtual 3.5 server. My site consists of a Wordpress blog, some custom PHP pages (nothing too intense), and I server 500-700 unique visitors per day. Despite my pretty modest numbers, I suffer from regular Apache crashes on account of QoS Alerts, mostly flagged as "tcpsndbuf". MediaTemple support -- usually tops -- has been pretty useless on this matter. I'm looking for answers as to how/why this is happening, advice on how to stop it. My website is a good portion of my livelihood, and downtime equates to lost income. Any and all help much appreciated. -Matt

• Theme changes after resuming from suspend in 10.10

  I'm using a Dell Inspiron 1520 and Ubuntu 10.10. I've read a lot of questions about graphics problems after resuming from suspend, but most of them are much more serious than mine. I can boot, login and use Ubuntu fine. The problem is that my theme for my top bar and bottom bar changes to gray and blocky (not rounded). Oddly enough, the theme for the title bars of my windows stay the same dark theme. Any ideas how I can fix this? It works fine if I logout and log back in.

  I have read this post My computer boots to a black screen, what options do I have to fix it? UBUNTU 12.04 works well with livecd but fails to start after complete installation, black screen with a blinking cursor. I tried holding shift key and edit grub options but holding shift did not do anything. I give up, any suggestion. I have built in intel graphics card and an nvidia card in PCI. I have tried by removing nvidia card as well. All I see is a black screen with a blinking cursor. My system is Dell optiplex GX260 with 1GB ram and 2.4 GHz P4 processor

• Can it be harmful to grant jackd realtime priority?

  I am apt-get installing Ardour, a sound mixing program, just to try it out. Installing Ardour also installs JACK, a dependency. As part of the JACK installation script, I get the following dialog: If you want to run jackd with realtime priorities, the user starting jackd needs realtime permissions. Accept this option to create the file /etc/security/limits.d/audio.conf, granting realtime priority and memlock privileges to the audio group. Running jackd with realtime priority minimizes latency, but may lead to complete system lock-ups by requesting all the available physical system memory, which is unacceptable in multi-user environments. Enable realtime process priority? I'm installing on my laptop, which never has multiple simultaneous users. I still have concerns: is JACK something that'll be used by the system itself to play any sound (i.e. will it replace ALSA)? If so, does that mean that if I enable realtime priority for JACK, I'll run a slight risk of freezing the machine whenever any sound is played? Or is JACK only going to be used by Ardour for now (until I install some other JACK-dependent program)? Thanks, -- Matt

• Universal navigation menu across domains

  I'd like to start by saying that I've searched for hours and could not find a definitive answer to my question. Across different sites on different second-level domains exists a universal navigation bar with a collection of roughly 30 links. This universal bar is exactly the same for every page on each domain. The bar's HTML, CSS and JavaScript are all stored in a subfolder for each domain and the HTML is embedded upon serving the page and is not being injected on the client side. None of the links use any rel directives and are as vanilla as can be. My question is about Google's duplicate content rule. Would something like this be considered duplicate content? Matt Cutt's blog post about duplicate content mentions boilerplate repetition, but then he mentions lengthy legalese. Since the text in this universal bar is brief and uses common terms, I wonder if this same rule applies. If this is considered duplicate content, what would be a good way to correct the problem? • Corrupt plymouth boot screen when using properietary Nvidia drivers

  I recently got the final version of Ubuntu Natty Narwhal x64 and everything is working just fine. The only thing I am having trouble with is the boot screen. After I installed the proprietary nVidia drivers, the boot screen becomes corrupt and only shows text (as it has been doing since Ubuntu 10.04). When I followed the instructions to fix the boot screen in 10.04 and 10.10, the boot screen still remains the same and the problem isn't resolved. Please give a full guide on how to fix this problem. Machine Details Computer : HP Pavilion p6240in Processor : Core 2 duo Memory : 4096 megabytes Graphics : nVidia G210 3d graphics Monitor : Dell 17 inch lcd Another question I would like to ask is whether it is possible to use this script (http://www.webupd8.org/2010/10/script-to-fix-ubuntu-plymouth-for.html) with 11.04. I am asking this question because it says that the script works only with 10.04 and 10.10.

• Anyone know how to get an LTSP image working with VIA VX855 chipset?

  I'm running an LTSP server on Ubuntu 11.10 and can load the i386 image via PXE boot on a VirtualBox VM just fine. However, when I PXE boot a Dell FX130 thin client on the LTSP network the login screen ends up being a white screen with a bunch of wavy black lines going up and down it. The 11.10 splash screen displays just fine as the image is booted, then I get a "INVALID CARD NUMBER" message, then a black screen, then finally the white screen with wavy lines. I'm not sure if the "INVALID CARD NUMBER" message has anything to do with the issue, but in the end the white screen with wavy lines makes me think it's a video driver problem. On the LTSP server, I chrooted into /opt/ltsp/i386 and made sure xserver-xorg-video-openchrome was installed. I did notice that no xorg.conf exits in /etc/X11 though.

• Why are two indicator-network versions being worked on?

  Some months ago, on the road to Ubuntu Maverick, a new system indicator, network (with connman as a backend), started to be developed. The plan was to get it into UNE and release it with no notifcation area. Unfortunately it didn't make it into the final version. However, continued efforts are still being made to improve it, and I'm getting regular updates. From a blueprint from the last UDS, I read that the plan was to ship no notification area and only indicators. For that, it was defined that nm-applet (backend: NetworkManager) should be ported to the appindicator library. Today I discovered that those efforts are going on and a initial version is available for testing, available from Matt Trudel PPA (Natty only). So, my questions is, to whoever has the necessary info: wouldn't it be easier to join efforts and concentrate the work in just one version (probably NetworkManager backend, as that's the official plan), instead of breaking those efforts apart and hampering both testing and developing? Both indicators are being developed by Canonical engineers, and that really doesn't make much sense. So, any Canonical engineer willing to clarify this?
