• .NET app - Should we use SQL Server and duplicate some reference data from an external Oracle DB? Or use Oracle and have a DB link?

  We're looking to migrate some existing Excel/Access processes into a new system which will provide the users with a Silverlight frontend to run and view the reports instead of using MS Access. The initial idea was to have SQL Server 2008 as RDBMS. The problem is that we've got some static data such as country codes, counterparties, etc which live in an existing Oracle DB. Since we do not want to duplicate that data (if possible), we were thinking of having a DB link between SQL Server and Oracle, but our firm does not allow that. So the options are either duplicate the data or use Oracle as RDBMS - surprise, the firm does allow DB links between Oracle databases. The initial idea was also to use WCF RIA Services, Entity Framework, etc which we're not sure they play well with Oracle, that's why it was decided to go with SQL Server in the first place. Would you advise to go for Oracle so that we can just link the static data? Or use SQL Server 2008 and replicate it because it's "safer" to stay within the Microsoft land? To use or not to use Entity Framework and WCF RIA Services at all? Regards. UPDATE: Thanks everyone for your answers. Nothing is set in stone yet. We'll try to import the data instead of linking, as if the other DB goes down, our system can still carry on. We're likely to use SQL Server just because most developers are more experienced with it. Even if we used RIA Services, we can swap out the Data Access Layer and use other frameworks such those mentioned below.

• 2-Bay External HDD Enclosure in JBOD mode fails to detect both drives (Linux & Windows)

  I recently purchased a couple of USB 3.0 External HDD Enclosures to use for storage and backup; the idea was to have one act as backup to the other, with 4 x 3TB drives in total. However, the second drive in each is not accessible in either Linux nor Windows, and I could not determine the reason. 1. Situation The two enclosures are slightly different (couldn't find them in stock at the same time) yet from many little details appear to be the same Chinese base design with a tweaked outer shell. The models are: Sharkoon 2-Bay RAID Box Fantec MR-35DU3 The drives are Seagate 3TB Barracuda ST33000651AS, firmware CC44, all identical. From reading manuals and online sources, I determined that JBOD would be the optimal setup for my needs -- addressing the two drives separately in each enclosure would be important, making it easy to swap drives and mix&match them if needed; all the other modes implied the controller doing a combination of the drives. The software used was Debian GNU/Linux - testing/wheezy - kernel 2.6.39-2 and Windows 7 Ultimate. 2. Description of the problem Now, here comes the problem: every time I connect either of the enclosures to a PC using the supplied cable (tried a different one as well), only the HDD in the top bay is readable, the one below is detected yet errors out in various ways. According to the manuals, it should not happen: in JBOD, the system should be able to "see" two separate drives upon connection. This happens with both enclosures and any combination of HDDs (i.e. if I swap them, the same thing happens), so the HDDs are good and I think so are the enclosures (two different companies making similar products that failed in an identical fashion would be very unlikely). The top HDD can be used fine every time, I actually tried a speed test from Linux and got about 150MiB/s reads, so all is working as it should; the one below refuses to work every time. So the failure is consistent. To make sure this was not some obscure Linux bug, I tried the same under Windows 7, and the system also only created one drive letter for a drive of 3TB size (so it was only seeing one instead of both). Placing an older, known good, 2TB drive in the top bay made that the one recognised, so we have the same issue under Windows as well. Log entries under Linux (tested here with a 3TB and a 2TB drive so I could differentiate them; either one works in the top enclosure, in the test setup the 3TB one is on top). • Getting Started with Puppet on Oracle Solaris 11

  One of the exciting enhancements with Oracle Solaris 11.2 has been the introduction of Puppet. While upstream Puppet did have some rudimentary support for Oracle Solaris 11, Drew Fisher and Ginnie Wray worked tirelessly to add enhance the Oracle Solaris Puppet offering. We've talked to customers over the past few years and asked them what their problems were and what technologies they were using, particularly for configuration management. Puppet came up time and time again, and it made a huge amount of sense bringing it as a 1st class citizen in the Oracle Solaris platform. So what is Puppet, and why is it useful? To quote from PuppetLabs, the guys who are responsible for creating Puppet: Puppet is a declarative, model-based approach to IT automation, helping you manage infrastructure throughout its lifecycle, from provisioning and configuration to orchestration and reporting. Using Puppet, you can easily automate repetitive tasks, quickly deploy critical applications, and proactively manage change, scaling from 10s of servers to 1000s, on-premise or in the cloud. What's more, with Puppet support for Oracle Solaris, administrators can now manage a completely heterogeneous data center from a single or series of Puppet masters. Better still, it's an excellent tool when combined with our new compliance framework to ensure you're meeting your compliance regulations. We're not stopping there of course, and we'll enhance our offerings over time, and work with PuppetLabs to get some of this support upstream (or into the Puppet Forge). Oracle SOA Suite for healthcare integration dashboards display information about the current health of the endpoints in a healthcare integration application. You can create and configure multiple dashboards as needed to monitor the status and volume metrics for the endpoints you have defined. The Dashboards reflects changes that occur in the runtime repository, such as purging runtime instance data, new messages processed, and new error messages. You can display data for various time periods, and you can manually refresh the data in real time or set the dashboard to automatically refresh at set intervals. • Oracle Virtualbox does not open since upgrade

  After upgrading to Ubuntu 12.10, I have been unable to restart my Oracle virtualbox. jan@jan-System-Product-Name:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup sudo: /etc/init.d/vboxdrv: command not found Where do I go from here? Can anyone help, please? I tried to install virtualbox via these commands: echo "deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian $(lsb_release -sc) contrib" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/virtualbox.list wget -q http://download.virtualbox.org/virtu...racle_vbox.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add - sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install virtualbox-4.2 Attempts to install via package manager vbox would not start. These error reports are received: Because the USB 2.0 controller state is part of the saved VM state, the VM cannot be started.To fix this problem, either install the 'Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack' or disable USB 2.0 support in the VM settings (VERR_NOT_FOUND). Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005) Component: Console Interface: IConsole {db7ab4ca-2a3f-4183-9243-c1208da92392} I installed the extension pack, no change in result. I have added myself as user, but the error report says user must be added, when I redo add user, it says user is already added. The following outputs were also received:   Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Nuwe skelm. Implementation of the USB 2.0 controller not found! I cannot access the USB 2.0 setting to disable it. Where do I go from here, please?

• Java stored procedures in Oracle, a good idea?

  I'm considering using a Java stored procedure as a very small shim to allow UDP communication from a PL/SQL package. Oracle does not provide a UTL_UDP to match its UTL_TCP. There is a 3rd party XUTL_UDP that uses Java, but it's closed source (meaning I can't see how it's implemented, not that I don't want to use closed source). An important distinction between PL/SQL and Java stored procedures with regards to networking: PL/SQL sockets are closed when dbms_session.reset_package is called, but Java sockets are not. So if you want to keep a socket open to avoid the tear-down/reconnect costs, you can't do it in sessions that are using reset_package (like mod_plsql or mod_owa HTTP requests). I haven't used Java stored procedures in a production capacity in Oracle before. This is a very large, heavily-used database, and this particular shim would be heavily used as well (it serves as a UDP bridge between a PL/SQL RFC 5424 syslog client and the local rsyslog daemon). Am I opening myself up for woe and horror, or are Java stored procedures stable and robust enough for usage in 10g? I'm wondering about issues with the embedded JVM, the jit, garbage collection, or other things that might impact a heavily used database.

• Upgrade issues due to broken "dependency problems prevent configuration of linux-image-generic" error

  okay, I've recently upgrade from 11.10 to 12.04 and I've been having some issues. I don't know if its a bug or not, but I thought I would submit it here. Okay here's a little background; I ran the distro update from the update manager and got a couple errors that I didn't catch. the computer restarted, and when I logged the Launcher and my top bar of the Ubuntu desktop didn't load. While it was trying to load a couple error messages came up, I think they were called "apport", saying they couldn't send the bug information for some reason. I believe it said somethings wrong with my internet connection, but nothing's wrong with it.
