    When storing personal data on a USB stick, data needs to be encrypted to ensure privacy. Regrettably, this is far from easy to do without introducing a lot of overhead; ideally, the whole encryption process should done automatically. Does anyone know of a convenient way to encrypt the data on a USB drive? Update: I am using Windows Vista, although I would prefer a cross-platform solution.

  • Any Linux distro which is supported on EFI enabled XServe

    I am looking into installing Linux on a test XServe machine and see how it goes overall. We have our entire infrastructure on OSX and would like to move to Linux servers. Is there any distribution which has good support for XServe? Google search yielded nothing conclusive. I don't mind hacking around for personal use (compiling kernel, tweaking packages and configurations) but when running in production it's good to be cautious. Paying for commercial support is definitely an option.

  • What does N years of experience with a language really mean?

    I've been looking at jobs descriptions since I'm graduating soon and looking for a job and what's always coming back - I'm not teaching you anything - is the "N years of experience in this language". It has been discussed in this question that if you work professionally with let's say Ruby for 2 years, but during these two years you also did some C# and PHP and were actually coding in Ruby 50% of the time. Do you say you have 1 year of experience in Ruby? 2 years? Another issue that hasn't been reviewed in the other post is for "non-professional experience". I'll give you a personal example: I've been working with Ruby on Rails since 2004 while at school. I did a lot of personal projects and school projects using this technology. I also used Rails in 2 6-month internships. Do I have 5 years of Rails experience (2004-now)? Do I have 1 year(2 internships)? Do I have nothing? I feel like I don't deserve the credit for 5 years, because the first years I wasn't working a lot with rails, but since last year I launched some websites and invested myself a lot in this technology and just saying 1 year doesn't really reflect how much I know the technology... Another example: I Learned C++ at school and did 1 big project with it (2-3 month of work and a semester of classes). I never used it in a company but I'd be able to be productive fairly quickly if I had to work on a C++ project and I have a good grasp of the concepts. Do I have no experience? 3 months? 6 months? ... something else? What I'm really trying to do is to find a way to present my skill set in a way that is compliant to what recruiters expect. I also don't want to end up at an interview that would go something like this... Recruiter (finding out the horrible truth): Oh but you said that you had 2 years of experience with this when you have none! / slaps me in the face / Me (in pain): Oh! The irony! Recruiter (yelling): Get out of my office / calls security, punches me in the throat /

  • Free hosting service for private and public git repositories

    Hi, does anyone know a free service for hosting private and public git repositories? There are a lot of services like for example the well known github. Most of them only allow hosting of public repositories. I want to host one or more of my private programming projects using git, but not all of them should be public (at least not for now). I also found the free service GitFarm which is build using the Google App Engine technology, but i couldn't find any information how it works (don't know what "built on Google App Engine technology" means) or if there are any other limitations. Also it seams like there is no web front-end available. An integrated web front-end, bug tracker and stuff like this would also be a big plus!

An found that Mozilla is using some kind of detect MAC address technology in their Geo-Location web service. Is it violate some privacy issue? I believe most of Geo-location service providers only offer country to city level. But the Mac address detection enable to locate the web visitors' location more correctly than using IP address detection.   • What are some of the practical cons to using ASMX webservices?

    Hello, at my workplace we are about to start a big project. My boss (a programmer, this is a startup) wishes to use ASMX webservices for this purpose. I do not want to start off a new program using deprecated technology and would like to show him this. I dislike WCF at this moment because it has such an extreme learning curve, but I'd rather learn it than use an unsupported technology. The problem I'm having is that I can not find any practical list of cons and downfalls when compared to WCF so that I can convince my boss to not use them. And saying "it's not as powerful" is not an adequate explanation. What exactly can it not do that we may need it to do for a webservice that is not meant to be shared externally? (as in, we don't support third-parties using our webservices unless they are using one of our clients. )

  • How do I uninstall mysql on snow leopard osx?

    Hello I had installed mysql from the command line when I setup a local web server with custom modules on my snow leopard box. I recently discovered MAMP and its just easier to work with it than with the personal web server Apple has and via command like utils. I uninstall ports completely but still see 'mysqld' in my Activity Monitor. I would like to uninstall this cleanly. Any tips? Thank you.

    We are thinking about combining .NET technology with Java technology (WCF, JBoss/ESB, MOM, WPF, WF) and I need to have a high-level idea of what are the apples and oranges in the .NET 3.5 and Java worlds. Does anyone know of a good, clear article or better yet a simple chart which answers questions such as: WCF in the Java world is __ the equivalent of WPF in the Java world is _ the closes thing to JBoss in the .NET world is _ the JVM and CLR are essentially the same except for these differences: .... in the Java world you don't have the concept of WF/WCF/WPF, instead you have .... there is no "LINQ" in the Java world yet, but you can use ___ the closest you get to ADO.NET Data Services in the Java world is ....   • How can I embed firefox in a GUI application?

    Has anyone ever embedded the firefox web browser technology in their own [unmanaged] C/C++ GUI application in the same way that IE can be embedded as a COM object? (I would like to do this on Linux, not Windows). Are there "better" alternatives to firefox? I'm open to anything as long as I can use it with non-GPL code. My needs are fairly basic; I only need fundamental HTML parsing and display of static local files, but I'd take advantage of more sophisticated technology, if I can get it. I'd like to be able to use JavaScript, but I can get by without it.

I'd like to ensure that we deliver it using technology that is easy for end developers to implement and not tied to any particular platform, rather than using technology that is unpopular/incompatible with developers. The kind of requests we expect are mainly to retrieve search results (not many parameters), but down the like we'd like to be able to provide catalogue lookups and the like, which may be more complex.     I am using search logic to filter results on company listing page. The user is able to specify any number of parameters using a variety of named URLs. For example: /location/mexico /sector/technology /sector/financial/location/argentina Results in the following respectively: params[:location] == 'mexico' params[:sector] == 'technology' params[:sector] == 'financial' and params[:location] == 'argentina' I am now trying to cleanup or 'DRY' my model code. Currently I have: def self.search(params) ... if params[:location] results = results.location_permalink_equals params[:location] if results results = Company.location_permalink_equals params[:location] unless results end if params[:sector] results = results.location_permalink_equals params[:sector] if results results = Company.location_permalink_equals params[:sector] unless results end ... end I don't like repeating the searchs.     It comes to my mind that when I use any proxy server, the information will be submit to the proxy server including the username/password of any website I login. This way I risk my identity. I've heard that there are some secure proxy server but can I found any with reasonable price, probably free? ( By the way, VPN is also considered but they are expensive for personal usage ). Even if I can find such service, how can I know that they won't exploit my information?

    Do web proxies really provide anonymity? I mean, without someone asking for logs in a web proxy server for who/when connected, is it impossible to know who was behind that IP address? I'm asking this because I heard somewhere that some technologies (like "flash") bypass personal IP information for requests or something like that. (I'm a noob in server configuration and concepts like DNS and proxies. Thanks!)

I've tried the following : Create a custom list, add a field named "TestField" Create a personal view named "TestView", filter : Show when column "TestField" is equal to "" (leave the box empty) Create an alert, immediate email when items appearing in "TestView" are modified Create an item with both fields filled Create an item with only title filled Now you should receive two alert emails, but in the view "TestView" there is only one item.     How can I best implement a system for send keystrokes/commands via an iPhone and/or Droid to a desktop or laptop computer via WiFi or bluetooth? There are apps for VLC, Keynote and other applications that do this, so I know it's possible but don't know what technology base to use. The implementation is probably different on Windows and OS X, but if they could be similar that'd be a big win. If VNC-type technology is used, that'd be fine but I only need to send key commands and mouse clicks—I don't need to be able to navigate the screen space.
