• Best Practices for Working with Multiple Monitors in Visual Studio 2010

  Now that Visual Studio 2010 has support for multiple monitors, I am curious how other people have their environments arranged. I have yet to come up with an arrangement that I am really satisfied with. The current best I have come up with for my 2 monitor system is to have all code windows detached. Then, on my primary monitor, I am able to have two code windows side by side (using the Windows 7 keyboard shortcuts WinKey+LeftArrow and WinKey+RightArrow.) On my secondary monitor I put the rest of the IDE with all of the tool windows that are normally on the bottom (errors list, find window, call stack, etc...) docked where the code windows normally go. I've also tried having all those things detached and having almost nothing in the IDE proper. The problems with this layout are: Newly opened code windows always open in the IDE, not on top of one of the detached windows. Detached code windows do not remember their exact placement from session to session (they are slightly off, having me to use the winkey + arrow key shortcut again and again for each window. There seems to be no way to have the code panes aware that they are on top of one another (IE -- multiple tabs.) The CTRL+TAB shortcut always displays on top of the IDE proper. The Code Panes are always "on top" of (children of) the IDE. So clicking on any code pane brings the IDE to the foreground, even when I care only about that code pane, and not the IDE. Other more minor issues... What would go a long way to making this better is having the code panes detach such that they are tab strips that can have other code panes docked within them. The new multi-monitor support in VS2010 is good, but it still seems really lacking. Can these issues be solved with an add-in? If so, is anyone aware of one? Is there a better way to work with the IDE on multiple monitors than what I am doing? NOTE: While this question is subjective (there is certainly no "this is the best way and that's final" answer) I'd really like to know possibly better methods of working with the IDE than what I have come up with. The intent is not to start a "mine's best" flame war.

Can you point me to good information (tutorials, etc) on it. Should I use MFC Application or a Win32 project? Is there any step by step guide ? I'm using VS 2010. The majority of info I'd found on MFC is really old. It seems like the vast majority of development is going .net.

• Connect android to database

  I am doing a school project where we need to create an android application which needs to connect to a database. the application needs to gain and store information for people's profiles on the database. But unfortunatly we are a little bit stuck at this point because there are numerous ways to link the application such as http request through apache or through the SOAP/REST protocol. But it's really hard to find good instructions or tutorials on the problem since I can't really find them. Maybe that's cause i'm probably using the wrong words on google. Unfortunately I have little relevant information. So if anyone can help me with finding relevant links to good online tutorials or howto's than those are very welcome.

• HTML5 Canvas compositing question (source-in)

  I am trying to recreate a page flipping type animation in HTML5 using canvas. The animation is based on ideas from here: hxxp://oreilly.com/javascript/archive/flashhacks.html but thats not really important. The problem I am having is that using the 'source-in' composite operation is not giving me the results I expect and would like clarification as to why. Here is the example: (i think it can only be viewed in chrome, not working in FF 3.6) http://acpound.fylez.com/test/example.html The black rectangle is supposed to act as a 'mask' for the page being turned over. All I want to see is the turning page in the areas where it overlaps the mask. The problem is the entire black rectangle is drawn, not just the area where they overlap. The source is all on the page. I know HTML5 isn't really being used yet, I'm just experimenting for my personal site and curiosity. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

• Why There is a difference between assembly languages like Windows, Linux ?

  I am relatively new to all this low level stuff,assembly language.. and want to learn more detail. Why there is a difference between Linux, Windows Assembly languages? As I understand when I compile a C code Operating system does not really produce pure machine or assembly code, it produces OS dependent binary code.But why ? For example when I use a x86 system, CPU only understands x86 ASM am I right?.So Why we dont write pure x86 assembly code and why there are different assembly variations based on Operating system? If we would write pure ASM or OS produce pure ASM there wouldn't be binary compatilibty issues between Operating systems or Not ? I am really wondering all reasons behind them. Any detailed answer, article, book would be great. Thanks.

• Cheap Wifi enabled Android or other programmable device

  Does anyone know of a cheap Android or programmable device that has wifi? I need it for a project for a company that needs a wifi handheld device for the shop floor. Im not too fussed about the language the device uses though Im not really interested in the iTouch as theres no intention to release the app in the app store and I don`t really want to jail break everybodys iTouch. Ideally it would be small , iTouch size for example and relatively cheap $100 or less. Nothing fancy just ability to write a simple UI and have wifi. Voice is not needed. Not too fussed about touch or qwerty keyboard either.

• Why is there no Microsoft Certified Master program targetted at developers?

  In the lower level certifications, developer technology is all over the place. At the highest level (Microsoft Certified Architect), the Solutions track appears to be a good fit for high level application designers and architects. MCA requires an MCM as a prerequisite. However, none of the MCM tracks are targeted towards development. Obviously to be a good architect you need to have knowledge of other technologies, servers, sql, messaging etc. But those seem like things that should be part of the course load, and not the sole focus. Are the lower tiers really as high as you can go for application focused professionals? For most developers, the SQL MCM seems to be the best fit. Are the MCM and MCA really targeted ad more administrators and not developers?

• crossdomain cookie using iframe, how?

  I searched a lot on this topic, but didn't really found a solid answer to this. I need to set a cookie from any domain (out of my control), lets say "Domain B" to my main domain, lets say "Domain A", and be able to read the cookie also, without exiting Domain B. kinda like Facebook connect for websites, or Snap.com, and others of the sort. how it that done? If I look at lets say http://ajaxian.com/ I see Firecookie shows cookies from many domains being used on that website, and I really wanna know how it's achieved.

• Storing expression template functors

  Hello guys, at the moment I'm really interested in expression templates and want to code a library for writing and differentiating mathematical functions with a lambda-style syntax. At the moment, I'm able to write (_x * _x)(2); and get the correct result 4. But I would really like to do something like MathFunction f = _x * _x; f(2);, but I don't have any ideas on how to cope with the recursive expression templates on the right side. Is it possible to achieve this without using the 'auto'-Keyword instead of MathFunction or having to make the operator() virtual? Thanks for your help!

• Casting as Interface? Awesome.

  I was just experimenting around with one of my programs, trying to make it looks prettier and I found something interesting. I have an interface that 4 classes inherit from. I found that if I pass the Class as an object to a method like so: ClassTest classtest = new ClassTest(); DoOperation(classtest); private void DoOperation(object o) { ((InterfaceClass)o).DoThis(); } So I can pass any type of class that inherits from InterfaceClass, and it will preform the proper interface operation? This is the coolest thing I've ever found from OOP (something I've never really studied) I really thought interfaces were created for the sole purpose of organization for developers. Are there more uses for interfaces than this?

• Fastest way to store/retrieve a dictionary - SQL, text file...?

  Hi all, This is a really really super dumb question, so I apologise, but I'd be grateful for some advice. I've got a text file of words and word frequencies. It's very large - theoretically we're talking millions of rows. I just want to retrieve values from the file, and do it as quickly and efficiently as possible (for a web app, in Django). My question is: what is the best way to store and retrieve the values? Should import them into SQL? Or keep the file and use grep? Or put them into a JSON dictionary...? Or some other way? Sorry for the dumb question, would be very grateful for advice!

• Why use constants in programming?

  I've just been going back over a bit of C studying using Ivor Horton's Beginning C book. I got to the bit about declaring constants which seems to get mixed up with variables in the same sentence. Just to clarify, what is the difference in specifying constants and variables in C, and really, when do you need to use a constant instead of a variable? I know folks say to use a constant when the information doesn't change during program execution but I can't really think of a time when a variable couldn't be used instead. Thanks

• Netbeans has Realy Bad FTP support , Forces me to download all Files even before I can continue

  Hello Friends , have started using Netbeans recently after using Aptana, phpdesigner and Notepad++ . I love Netbeans for it's speed and it has almost everything I want except for the fact that the FTP support is really Bad. To start working on a FTP server , I have to download all the files to my localhost first which is such a waste of bandwidth & if those files are many ie. 1000+ files then it's really annoying . I have tried mounting remote FTP as local filesystem in Windows and then using Netbeans to access it but that does'nt work out too .. If anybody using netbeans a lot for PHP development can guide me on this , then I would be highly obliged.. this trivial problem is keeping me from using this awesome IDE . Thanks & Regards .

• In Visual Studio 2008, how can I make control+click do a "Go To Definition"?

  I know this is not strictly about programming, but it's pretty close. Anyway, in Delphi, you can hold control and click on a method to jump to its definition. In VS2008, you have to right-click and select "Go To Definition". I use this function quite often, so I'd really like to get VS to behave like delphi in this regard - its so much quicker to ctrl+click. I don't think there's a way to get this working in base VS2008 - am I wrong? Or maybe there's a plugin I could use? Edit: Click then F12 does work - but isn't really a good solution for me.. It's still way slower than ctrl+click. I might try AutoHotkey, since I'm already running it for something else. Edit: AutoHotkey worked for me. • Asking browsers to cache as aggressively as possible

  This is about a web app that serves images. Since the same request will always return the same image, I want the accessing browsers to cache the images as aggressively as possible. I pretty much want to tell the browser Here's your image. Go ahead and keep it; it's really not going to change for the next couple of days. No need to come back. Really. I promise. I do, so far, set Cache-Control: public, max-age=86400 Last-Modified: (some time ago) Expires: (two days from now) and of course return a 304 not modified if the request has the appropriate If-Modified-Since header. Is there anything else I can do (or anything I should do differently) to get my message across to the browsers? The app is hosted on the Google App Engine, in case that matters.

  Okay, I am really stuck here. I have a table of tr's that have id's: #tr_xx where xx is a number. item is a number. The if(... part makes sure that what follows is only executed once at the end of all the animations. $('#tr_' + item + '>td').fadeOut('slow', function() { if($('#tr_' + item + '>td:animated').length === 0) { $(this).parent().remove(); // This function recolors the rows // -not really related to this Recolor(); } }); The problem is that the tr does not get deleted. • Package names - impl v internal

  In my time of digging around Java APIs I have come across both impl and internal packages. Up until now I never really thought about the difference - as with all enterprisey Java apps, I figured they just meant that "actual implementation in here; you (API user) should be really using the interface. Go away." A little bit of digging around Stack Overflow seems to suggest that the internal package at least can have some security placed around it. So, what is the difference? I don't think it is a matter of taste because I have seen APIs with both.

• DrawRect on the iPhone vs. the Mac

  I am an experienced iPhone dev beginning to work on my first Mac app. One thing that is really throwing me off is the differences between UIView and NSView. It seems that I cannot set the background color of a NSView via interface builder as I can with a UIView. It also seems that I cannot do it by simply sending a setBackgroundColor: message to it. All the examples I have seen are overriding drawRect: in a subclass of NSView. Is that really the only way to do it? What is the conceptual difference here, and why is it this way? NOTE: I am only trying to set the background color to the default grey.

• How do I do import hooks in IronPython/Silverlight?

  I'm extending TryPython to (along with various other things) allow users to save a file and subsequently import that file. TryPython overloads the built in file operations, so I need to know what parts of import need to hooked into in order for import to use the overloaded file operations. Really, a basic overview of IronPython's import when used in Silverlight would be extremely helpful. I don't need a complete working solution (although I won't stop you from writing one! :). • Advice for building a browser-based audio mixer up to 32 tracks

  As a personal hobby I am looking to build an online audio mixer where I can upload individual instrument tracks, control individual volumes of each track, and export the mixed down version. I've been trying (and have come pretty close) with javascript. I really would like to stay away from flash if possible, but I'm really looking for suggestions for technologies to try. • How not to lose focus on a login page

  I have a simple login form with 2 input fields: "username" and "password". "username" field is focused by default. The problem is that when user clicks outside "username" or "password" fields, the focus is gone (it is neither on "username" nor on "password" fields"). How can I force the focus to be on these 2 fields only ? • How do I debug my emacs crash on Windows?

  I use emacs on windows (at work) and on linux (at home). On the windows machine, I'm using emacs 23.1 (from here: ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/emacs/windows/emacs-23.1-bin-i386.zip). It just crashed right now. Recently, I've taken a healthy interest in debugging on windows (using WinDbg), so I really want to try my hand at this ready-made crash :) Can someone tell me where (or if at all) I can get the symbol files (.pdb) for emacs for windows?
