  • Searching through large data set

    how would i search through a list with ~5 mil 128bit (or 256, depending on how you look at it) strings quickly and find the duplicates (in python)? i can turn the strings into numbers, but i don't think that's going to help much. since i haven't learned much information theory, is there anything about this in information theory? and since these are hashes already, there's no point in hashing them again

  • Why is Perl commonly used as CGI scripts?

    I plan to add a better search feature to my site, so I thought that I would write it in C and use the CGI as a means to access it. But it seems that Perl is the most popular language when it comes to CGI-based stuff. Why is that? Wouldn't it be faster programmed in C or machine code? What advantages, if any, are there to writing it in a scripting language? Thanks.

    For some unknown reason I'm running into a problem when passing a variable to a full text search stored procedure performs many times slower than executing the same statement with a constant value. Any idea why and how can that be avoided? This executes very fast: SELECT * FROM table WHERE CONTAINS (comments, '123') This executes very slowly and times out: DECLARE @SearchTerm nvarchar(30) SET @SearchTerm = '123' SET @SearchTerm = '"' + @SearchTerm + '"' SELECT * FROM table WHERE CONTAINS (comments, @SearchTerm) Does this make any sense???

  • Ideas for designing an automated content tagging system needed

    I am currently designing a website that amongst other is required to display and organise small amounts of text content (mainly quotes, article stubs, etc.). I currently have a database with 250,000+ items and need to come up with a method of tagging each item with relevant tags which will eventually allow for easy searching/browsing of the content for users. A very simplistic idea I have (and one that I believe is employed by some sites that I have been looking to for inspiration (http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/topics.html)), is to simply search the database for certain words or phrases and use these words as tags for the content. This can easily be extended so that if for example a user wanted to show all items with a theme of love then I would just return a list of items with words and phrases relating to this theme. This would not be hard to implement but does not provide very good results. For example if I were to search for the month 'May' in the database with the aim of then classifying the items returned as realting to the topic of Spring then I would get back all occurrences of the word May, regardless of the semantic meaning. Another shortcoming of this method is that I believe it would be quite hard to automate the process to any large scale. What I really require is a library that can take an item, break it down and analyse the semantic meaning and also return a list of tags that would correctly classify the item. I know this is a lot to ask and I have a feeling I will end up reverting to the aforementioned method but I just thought I should ask if anyone knew of any pre-existing solution. I think that as the items in the database are short then it is probably quite a hard task to analyse any meaning from them however I may be mistaken. Another path to possibly go down would be to use something like amazon turk to outsource the task which may produce good results but would be expensive. Eventually I would like users to be able to (and want to!) tag content and to vote for the most relevant tags, possibly using a gameification mechanic as motivation however this is some way down the line. A temporary fix may be the best thing if this were the route I decided to go down as I could use the rough results I got as the starting point for a more in depth solution.     Hello, I have a statement: I have a string such as content = "* test *" I want to search and replace it with so when I am done the string contains this: content = "(*) test (*)" My code is: content = Regex.Replace(content, "*", "(*)"); But this causes an error in C# because it thinks that the * is part of the Regular Expressions Syntax. How can I modify this code so it changes all asterisks in my string to (*) instead without causing a runtime error? Thanks.

    When searching for number of occurrences of a string in a file, I generally use: grep pattern file | wc -l However, this only finds one occurrence per line, because of the way grep works. How can I search for the number of times a string appears in a file, regardless of whether they are on the same or different lines? Also, what if I'm searching for a regex pattern, not a simple string? How can I count those, or, even better, print each match on a new line?

    I have a sample Solr schema as follows isPublic = boolean source = facebook| twitter | wordpress I want to write a query which returns all documents from the index which matches either the isPublic = true or isPublic is false and source= facebook. Something like this solrUrl/?q=blah&fq=(isPublic:true OR (isPublic:false AND source:facebook)) Is such a thing possible or should I search the index two times with each of these conditions and then combine + de-duplicate the results?

I think you can do this in 2008 with the SET STOPLIST=OFF, but I can't seem to find similar functionality in SQL Server 2005.

    I have a dynamic php website which index only has around 800 errors according to the w3 validator online. I have tried checking major websites like ebay, stackoverflow and others also, all with around 400 errors. So my first thought is, what good is that validator when it always displays errors? Secondly, will the errors affect my SERP ranking? ie, will me fixing these errors as good as I can increase my Google search position? Thanks
